Hi dark, Yeah, I've found laptops to be pretty rugged in design. My first laptop I purchased in 1998 and I used it clear up until 2004 or so when it was just too out of date to be practical any more. Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
well since we are talking about laptops I have had several. my t1850 with the keynot gold synth which lasted from 1993 till 2001 It got dropped, once had hard drives floppy drives keyboards 2 power modules and a mains plug. I used it as a main system for some time but it became a games box which unfortunately ended when it decided its drives would all die at once. my next was in 1996 it was a satelite 310cds. this lasted to about 2001 as a main box. running win95 and later 98se with its bios upgraded to version 8.0. this was the only system that ever had a bios upgrade at all or that needed upgrading. 2002-2004. I decide to go with a funding agency and on their recomendation got a raw deal with a nec versa. yes the 310 was still going strong but it was rather useless and slow. the worst system I ever had, had a mangled fan though unproven and required reformatting every week or so to keep it working. I used to spend half the time using it, a quarter of the time fixing it and the rest bashint it literally in frustration. it would break down in the most opertune circumstances like just before an exam. G. I finally did a bios update to fix it and the update didn't go so well. the main board died and I was happily able to replace the box. after that I got a toshiba again, a satelite a9. It was thankfully good and has lasted me till 2007 when its dvd drive burned out. as a resolt I can't recover the box. the screen is loose and floppy too. after that I got an old toshiba 4400 which was for linux on tech, which I used for what it was worth it was usefull. I had it for a year then got rid of it. The current system my tecra a9 has to its credit although trying to get me to reformat has not had me needing to although I have almost given up on it at times. its format process requires sight though and I am happy its gone ok for this long even with the abuse its got which is not to much though its keyboard was just replaced last month. Its probably gona last me till it burns its cpu. Ofcause not all the laptops are dead. my 4400 is now an email system for my mums friend or one of them. it does what it needs to do. my 310 was traded for a couple disks of mp3s and is happily making someone happy. my a10 satelite if I ever manage to replace the fan, cd drive and screen hinges will ride again though with its single core cpu there is probably not much point. my 1850 will work if I ever got the components, though I dropped it again while trying to fix it resulting in smoking batteries and broken casings so I think thats unlikely. My nec is in hell and I hope it stays there. disturbingly though it was the cheapest system on one of the us sites I think cnet or something. Hi. I'm stil reconsiddering buying esp pinball classic and just haven't made up my mind, I was waiting for more pinball party packs with more redesigned tables, but sadly that doesn't seem to be happening (in fact goodness knows what is! happening at Draconis). Part of the problem is that as I've already got the pinball party pack, the wild west table in the demo isn't so surprising, and for obvious reasons the sound scape and gameplay of the packman table isn't really a great advert for the game. I was wondering if someone might considder making game play recordings of some of the other tables, sinse the brief clip on the draconis esp pinball classic trailer really doesn't show too much. Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
Actually tom, I can beat that. My old uni laptop, a toshiba was bought in 2000, and I used it up until 2006, and until i got my desktop in 2005, it was pretty much used for several hours every day. In fact the only thing that went on it was the fan (my dad actually started using it recently just to do basic word processing, though he's sinse bought a newer model and my old machine has been consigned to the dustbin of history). the most extreme though is my brother's Toshiba. He had his original machine stolen during a burglary in 1997, containing all the work for his A-levels. Dolphin physically built him one within 10 days (this was in the days when you couldn't install a program like supernova without assistance, so it was better done in the shop), and sent it out. he stopped using it as a main work machine in 2005, and sinse bought a smaller netbook as a basic note taker. however, my mum is stil! using that machine, complete with it's install of windows 95 as a word processer now, and it stil! works! Admittedly, sinse my brother used consoles for his gaming, i don't believe it saw quite as much use as mine as it was basically used for word processing and net brousing, --- but stil it must be a record. As you might gather, we all like toshiba as a make. I did once use an acer, but found it ridiculously buggy and prone to overheat, even though it was scarcely six months old. [Audyssey] Majesty: Heroes of Ardania
Hey all, Just wondering if anyone's played this before? Kinda reminds me of KoL, but it's cool because you can hire followers, go on multi-part quests that involve clues as well as battling, etc. THough I don't know what you can do after you've done all the quests currently in the game. Despite the site saying it was last updated in 2008, there was just an April 2010 event so it's still actively being looked over. Also the classes are pretty cool with sets of items for specific classes and races, specific quests for races and things, quests unlock stuff, there are some quests that are generic so you can earn some side cash... I don't think there is any PVP anywhere in this game. I have heard nothing of it. Other people said this game was boring. Maybe, I just started playing and it doesn't seem bad, but someone suggested Time Hunter, at http://www.timehunter.com. I've heard of that game and I never got into it, so don't know. Just a quick note, I'm afraid the address you provided for heroes of ardania lead to a this domain is for sale page. A quick google found the game at http://www.heroesofardania.net/ I'll check it out tomorrow, sinse if it really does have quests as you say it might very much be my thing. KoL I never managed to get into, though I gave it a try on several occasions. The 40 advs a day really got on my whick, as did the fact whatever I did I just got beaten up, pluss some of the quests and riddles seemed down right obscure. I think if I'd have been able to play the game for longer each day it might not have been too bad, accept it was rather difficult to motivate myself to make so litle dayly progress in a world which essentially existed only to tell jokes, funny thougb many of the jokes undoubtedly are. Either way, I'll give this game a try. Beware the grue! Hi Shaun, Sheesh, man! You are pretty rough on your laptops. Lol! I've never had that much problem with any computer laptop or desktop that I can recall. If it is a desktop that has a hardware failior I tend to replace the parts manually if it is something I can fix. Laptops I just tend to take care of as best I can so they don't get destroyed. Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
Hi, Yeah, I'm a fan of Toshiba myself. Although, I haven't actually owned one I know plenty of people who do, have worked on them in the field, and they are ranked amung my favorite laptops. I think whenever my Compaq goes my next will likely be a Toshiba. On 5/4/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Actually tom, I can beat that. The only issue with toshibas I've noticed is to be careful with the batteries, and remember to keep running them down, even when unnecessary. i bought two new batteries for my toshiba last year, and I try to run them down to nothing even when I've got a power point handy. Hi, Lol! That's for sure. I have never known anyone who likes to format as much as Shaun does. It is his personal obsession I think. Sometimes I'll do one once a year or so to make sure everything is in maximum working condition but that is backing up from images so generally that is a quick and easy process. Once I install the image I'll run any and all upgrades, make a new image, and go on. However, I think Shaun does it whenever and if ever he can just to do it. Poor computer. Hi Michael, Uh, think about that a moment. Generally games like this are web based gamebook style adventures. In other words text only. hmmm I don't think so the nec was a joke I think the fan was broken loads or something. the 1850, well it dropped then died after a good life. the rest, inexperience mostly, the satelite, got hard labour for its entire life and although it had its failiers it was not to bad. the other 2 the 310 and 4400 had their uses and forfilled them. this current one seems to like mostly unless I do something stupid which I have done only about 4 times and in all cases I have managed to salvage it. Desktop wise I seem to be having a good run with the latest 2 units we have though one is quite old. what did you do just out a intrest with the cofee how did it happen, i imagine you dropping an entire cup and all whilst distracted at least thats probably what I'd have happen. I don't carry drinks round the unit or eat. I am always amased how sighted people can use the mouse with one hand, eat, put down the bowl drink, put down the cup, then type without either spilling or forgetting where the heck they were. I don't know if I'd spill probably would at some point but I know I'd forget what I was doing. Re: [Audyssey] games on netbook
well my main reason for the toshiba obsession if you will is 2 fold 1. the fact they don't break, unless they are mangled in some way. ok I admit the first one was dropped. the 3rd one had dead fans a dead headphone jack, a dead lid a dead modem at one stage and a dead dvd drive but thats about it. and it did not happen all at once. most of the issues came at its end life the other came at the beginning. This tecra has had its close calls but bar the keyboard and some stupid things to do with some recording software for a piece of semi broken hardware which I will not use anymore anyway its been ok. Every time it really breaks I almos go as far as calling someone to reformat but I usually fix it and then although bits don't work its like well its ok and I can do without most of this anyway. I like the fact the bios is accessable from the os though. even in the 1850 I could access it in dos as long as I had no 386 managers active. there was a brief period where in win9x time the manuals were not that accessible and before where I had no manual at all. But lately its all pdf which can be converted to text and its all ok. Support is mostly helpfull to and I havn't had any complaints. Now I wish toshiba made a desktop. I'd switch everyone over to that. Another thing I like about toshiba is its bios update, it will load the update disk say, then compair it with the bios currently loaded. In older units say the 1850 you had to boot to dos and run a program. with the newer units say the 310 and up you pushed a couple keys and it updated from a disk. lately you can only get the windows download but that does the same as the old versions. Also they do try to emulate the bios setup as closely to what appears in the os. firstly it was a program in dos then in win95-98 it was all a windows program now its a control panel. so I definately will stay with toshiba. They are also extremely quiet. At 01:07 p.m. 5/05/2010, you wrote: Hi, Yeah, I'm a fan of Toshiba myself. The only issue with toshibas I've noticed is to be careful with the batteries, and remember to keep running them down, even when unnecessary. i bought two new batteries for my toshiba last year, and I try to run them down to nothing even when I've got a power point handy. Their stil taking full chaarge, which is good. Admittedly that's only about 200 minutes per battery, not like the battery life on some more modern machines, but having two of them helps a lot. [Audyssey] Types of RPG Games
Hello gamers, As many of you might remember several months ago I began designing a gamebook style roll playing game called Legends of Etherea. When I originally drafted the plans for the game it was to be a text based gamebook adventure system very much in the spirit of Dungeons and Dragons using similar rules, classes, races, etc. While the game's story and map isn't yet complete it was going to have various towns, cities, forests, and dungeons to explore. However, over the past couple of months I am growing concerned that this style of game isn't something that would do well financially. Especially, since the release of Entombed. Basically, what I am aiming at is over the last few years graphical roll playing games like Final Fantasy and Xenogears have become hugely successful titles all but making the old text based interactive fiction systems that I personally like seam like a joke to most mainstream gamers. Now, I'm beginning to see the same thing happening more or less to the accessible games market as well. It is like why bother playing text based roguelike games like Nethack or ADOM when you can start up Entombed and wander around a dungeon doing basically the same thing complete with Sapi support, sounds, and music. I can't help but feel that Entombed has just raised the expectations of any new and future roll playing games to new heights. Its like who would pay $35 for a text only roll playing game when you can purchase Entombed for $40 which comes complete with sounds, music, Sapi support, etc. It makes the idea of writing and selling text only roll playing games seam laughable. So I can't help but feel like the time for text based games of any kind have just gone the way of the dinosaur. Earlier tonight when I was going through my e-mail there was a post from Michael on the Heroes of Ardania thread. He asked if the game came complete with sounds and music. That really got me thinking about my own project. It seams that justabout everyone now expects sounds, music, and if the player is sighted, killer graphics, to make a game worth their time. Otherwise the game is considered to be inferior to the games with graphics and sounds. So the question is how many of you still actually like text based games like me, and how many would be willing to pay for such a game? understand I'm not necessarily against games like Entombed, I could create something like that, of course, but I also have a good idea how financially and emotionally exhausting such a title would be to me personally. It would take ten times longer and be ten times harder to create just because I'd have to purchase more sound packs, license music, program all the extra code for sound, speech, menus, whatever. So I don't know that I'm up for anything that complicated at the moment, but I could do it if it were more financially successful. So I'd like to hear your thoughts. What do you expect, like, etc in a roll playing game for the computer? Thanks. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Possibly o/t: long gone, but always remembered.
I learned today that the long-time voice of the Detroit Tigers, Ernie Harwell died today at the age of 92. His was the voice of my childhood summers in Michigan as he and I got the Tigers through so many dismal seasons with those weird moments of hope, Like Mark The Bird Fidrich and that magical 1984 when they won everything in sight. His thoughtful delivery and clear insights into the game of baseball, along with his obvious and infectious excitement made me the sports fan I am today. His tireless work for the betterment of others, including work done after he knew he was terminally ill is an inspiration to me. I had the privilege of meeting Ernie Harwell before what was then an annual Beep Baseball game at Tiger Stadium in 1987. He came into the dugout and visited with all us players. Our conversations were not perfunctory; he talked with everybody for several minutes apiece and autographed our caps. It was and is clear to me that he did not find this a chore, and he met us as fellow lovers of the game, not as handicapped (remember the times) people doing something novel. It remains a great memory to me, even though he got to call me striking out over the PA system in those inimitable tones of his. He lived well and fully, and is probably one of the very few people whom just about everybody from the Detroit area loved. His career was baseball, but his life touched so many of us in a larger way. Farewell Ernie, ride that home run ball into the starry Heavens. In their company, you will always shine brightly, even when you're Long Gone.
