Re: [Audyssey] BGT
Good morning, Some quick clarifications. 1. BGT is written in C++. C++ is a general purpose programming language used to write most professional software as it gives a great amount of control over what is happening. But with this control comes a lot of extra responsibility, and it is very easy to break things when using C++. 2. AngelScript, which is the scripting engine that BGT uses, is also written in C++. AngelScript provides no functions from within itself, it is an empty scripting shell that the developer then fills up with functions and objects which is what I have done with BGT. This is the primary purpose of AngelScript, to be embedded in third party applications that need a scripting environment. The advantage of working in a scripted environment is that the sorts of mistakes that can occur when using a language such as C++, are prevented. For example, you do not have to do any memory management in BGT which you definitely need to do in C++. I hope this clears things up a little. Re: [Audyssey] king of fighters anniversary joystick for the playstation
well if you know how it all goes you can open the other stick and break the pieces and just put metal or other things. but they sound real crappy. At 04:27 a.m. 28/08/2010, you wrote: Just a heads up on this product. The King of Fighters anniversary joystick was made to make your fighting game experience that much more enjoyable- so they said. I payed 65 bucks each for the pair I bought, and right off the bat, I noticed that these joysticks were extremely tough to use. The sticks grind horribly when rolled, and to get a half circle from right to left to work was nearly impossible. To make a long story short, I went back to using the DS controlers after trying the joysticks out for the first day, but last weekend, me and my girlfriend were playing the first Marvel VS Capcom game on the PS1 system, and we decided to bust out the joysticks. We barely went 3 rounds before one of the joysticks all of a sudden stopped responding all together. Yesterday, me and a buddy opened up the joystick to take a look inside, and here is the problem: At the base of the stick on the inside of the machine, there is a thin cross piece made of plastic. This piece is what they put in there to allow contact between the stick and the actual directional controls. When you hold the stick in the down position for example, the bottom of the cross piece inside will angle down and touch the right part of the feedback board- giving your character the crouch. Problem here is that the plastic they used is very thin- like the material you see on a CD case- those break alot too. My girfriend actually snapped off two of four sides of that crosspiece without knowing or meaning to just playing MVC. As my buddy demonstrated, you can snap off the remaining legs of the crosspiece just by pressing on them with your finger tip. So now we're left with one completely useless joystick, and one that we're afraid to use. So, if you're shopping for joysticks, and you come across this model, give it a wide burst, and those of you who have bought it already, good luck and be gentle. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] games playable under the linux
Hi Petr, No problem. Glad I could be of some help. As it happens the topic of Linux gaming is a subject I am very personally interested in myself since I primarily use Linux for day to day computer work/play. I don't venture into Windows except when I really have to to write some Windows specific piece of software or to play an accessible game that I like. As a result I've made it my personal quest to find and create accessible games for Linux. As it so happens there are definitely games out there we can play. Unfortunately, many VI gamers would see it as taking a big step backwards because text adventures and muds make up the large majority of accessible games on Linux right now. There are also the odd console game like Hangman that are accessible to if you have the BSD games package installed. However, with APIs like SFML 1.6, which has bindings to OpenGL and OpenAL, it is certainly possible to create games equal to Tank Commander, Shades of Doom, Sarah, and all the other great accessible games for Windows. That's why when I get an opertunity to I have plans to use SFML for my Open G3D engine for Linux. I think Linux has gotten to the point where the game APIs are certainly equal to Windows and a developer could quite easily begin producing high-quality accessible games for Linux using C, C++, or Python. Cheers! Off course only if you are not too busy. My address is hammet...@seznam.cz, there you can send me some contact information if you decide to do that. Bye for now and once again, thanks very much for your help. On 28.8.2010 06:26, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Petr, Yes, there are some accessible games for Linux. If you are in to text adventures there is a free frotz interpretor called, frotz, that will allow you to play a number of ZCode games like the old Infocom games under Linux. There is also an accessible Adrift Runner called Scare that will allow you to play a number of Adrift text adventures as well. If you are into muds there is an accessible mud client, gnome-mud, that will allow you to play all the usual muds everyone talks about on the list. If you are looking for something more serious try FreeCiv. I've found it mostly accessible and works fairly well with Orca so far. FreeCiv is basically an accessible free clone of the old game Civilization. SoundRTS can be played on Linux too, but configuring it is a pain because it requires a number of older Python and PyGame packages that conflicts with the native Python packages that ship with Ubuntu, Vinux, and Debian, etc these days. So SoundRTS is problematic. In addition I am also working on Linux ports of STFC, MOTA, etc but those are far behind the Windows releases as these ports are primarily created for myself, but sooner or later once the Linux ports catch up with the Windows releases I'll be adding them to my products page as well. I've also got a number of text games I wrote a few years ago such as Blackjack, Yatzi, Uno, etc that were created for Linux and I eventually want to upgrade them and put them up for download as well. So Linux gaming is not only possible I have plans to add to what is out there fore Linux personally. As for using Wine to play Windows games forget it. It doesn't have all the dependencies you need and you pretty much have to install and register several dlls to get something like one of GMA's games to play. Even then the games are not stable, will crash, or run sluggishly. I did it one time with Shades of Doom, and setting Wine up to do it was a frickin' nightmare, and the end result sucked. So I don't consider Wine an option for a Linux gamer. Cheers! Hi Petr, Yes, you certainly can play Audioquake on Linux. You basically have to get and install the share ware Linux version of Quake for Linux and then install the Audioquake stuff. Re: [Audyssey] Nontendo and DS games
There aren't any designed specifically for the VI comunity... getting your hands on the sdk for that would cost an arm and a leg if no more. Also, the cartridges for the DS would be a problem as well. If you want mainstream games to play with family that aren't figting or action games, go for sports games or things like rock band and guitar hero, depending on what system you have at your disposal. - Original Message - From: Lori Duncan lori_dunca...@hotmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, August 28, 2010 12:16 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Nontendo and DS games Hi I just wondered if there are any accessible audio games for the VI community for the DS, xbox or anything which is portible? Hi Thomas, Thanks for your growl since my Sarah game update isn't completed yet. I take it as a compliment. I was planning to send the game to the beta testers a month ago but at the last moment decided to add a new level to the game.I have included the Castle grounds. Some hints, I have included a train, a buss, an angry tree, and a large half horse, half bird creature . In the dark forest you could run into giants, enormous spiders and creatures that are half man half horse. And in a maze you may encounter a talking creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. I have made a dozen or more major changes but I will wait until the game is done to list them. Hi, In answer to your question the core of BGT was written in C/C++. However, Angelscript was added on so you, the end user of BGT, could write games using that scripting language and include the core BGT C/C++ engine and libraries in your games. Re: [Audyssey] BGT
Hi Bryan, That's very simple. Those of us who use non-Windows machines install Windows to have the power and functionality of both operating systems. I, for example, can use Linux all I want, but when I want to play Tank Commander, Sarah, Shades of Doom, whatever simply reboot the system and select Windows from the boot loader and I'm set. I don't have to do without Windows software products just because I intend to use Linux 90% of the time. Admitedly that is a disadvantage to me, as the end user, as I still have to fork out the cash for Windows, maybe a Windows screen reader, to maintain compatibility with Windows products, but I'm not bound to use it all the time. I still have a choice not to use it because the alternative operating system is also sitting right there. Basically, what I'm getting at is I do it for the simple pleasure that I can get the best of both worlds by installing multiple operating systems on the same computer. Unless you have taken advantage of those alternative operating systems and programs it is easy to say, Well, Windows is fine for me, because you don't know what you are missing. Cheers! Hi Philip, I have a thought on this. Have you ever signed up to say the Mac Visionaries mailing list or one of the VI Linux related mailing lists? The reason I ask is you could talk to the list moderators to get a number of list members for each of those lists and compile a general idea of how many blind Linux and blind Mac users are out there. That could determine if porting BGT to Mac or Linux is financially worthwhile for you. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] BGT
Hi Philip, Exactly. That's actually why I am strongly looking at using Python 2.6 for my Open G3D engine for Linux. With C++ there is so much overhead that it is easy for a new programmer to get confused and frustrated with programming. In a script language like Python a string variable is simply a string of text and it doesn't really matter if it is a unicode wchar string or an anci char string. With C++, especially on Windows, you have to constantly worry about casting an anci C-style string to a unicode string to access com functions such as Sapi. That kind of string casting is way more than your average new game programmer is willing to put up with. Thus why an engine that uses Python, Angelscript, TCL, or something else is more reasonable and down to earth for the average person. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] BGT
Hi Philip, Exactly. That's actually why I am strongly looking at using Python 2.6 for my Open G3D engine for Linux. Re: [Audyssey] question about the sarah castle game from Phil
Hi Phil, Holy cow! I'd say you have been busy with Sarah. I'm sure glad I have a license for the full game. I'll be having fun upgrading to the new version. Of course, I'd like to have fun with Sarah Good too, but my wife won't let me have any fun with other women. Grrr... Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] BGT
Hi Thomas, This is a good idea, but I think that the figures I would get from these lists would be a bit too general unless therea re specific lists for Mac and Linux audio games. Instead, what I think I might do is to post a survey on the Blastbay website and of course on this list and a bunch of other distribution channels, asking straight out whether people would purchase either BGT or say Q9 if it were available for Mac or Linux. Now, considering that I would have to purchase a Mac myself in order to even begin a port, I would have to get a strong interest; at least 250 or 300 potential customers for each platform if I am to take on such an endeavour. Cheers! When the time comes, however, I would indeed be most greatful for any help with the Mac port.
