Re: [Audyssey] bpc text adventures

2010-11-14 Thread dark

Hi Haiden.

I was only going on the basis that LLewie already seems to have done this
with the great escape, making a playable windows version, so possibly
it could be done with the others.

Hi Dark,
Probably. Though someone would have to want to port the code to a language
that will compile an executable. Interestingly enough, the .bas extension
files are used for standard code modules in VB, though methinks it
probably

wouldn't be compilable in that format.

Best Regards,
Hayden

That would be welcome indeed.

No no, GWBASIC was the program they were written in most likely. An
example
of an interpreter would be something like basica.

heard of a program called GWBasic a while back, but not sure if it still

After Michael asked about these it got me curious and I downloaded and
tried
them.

I assumed that sinse they said they ran with doss, there would be a file
I

could run under the console in windows to play the game, such as an exe,
com
or bat file, but there are none of those around in the folders, just a
bas

file which does nothing when I try to open it.

Are these completely un runnable under windows? and if so, any chance of
making them runnable?

I just rather fancy the idea of single player adventure games, -
maybe

lewie could fix these the way he did with the great escape, which is
deffinately fun.

Hi Dark,

Sure its possible. There are plenty of languages we could convert this
to such as Python, Perl, or Ruby which would be a lot more current
and be way more cross-platform to boot.

In fact, I have a number of games written in Apple basic such as
Oregon Trail that I'd love to convert to a more modern programming
language. Python sounds like a good bet since it is simple to code in,
is cross-platform, but then requires that the Python runtime be
installed.

Although, for text adventures I've been thinking of using a scripting
language called Perl. It is C-like, but like Python is an interpreted
language. In a way Perl is like writing in C without all the over head
and complexity attached.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I've created a very small test room to try out. You can download it from
this url:

www.inthecompanyofgrues.com/interactivefiction/test.z5

I've switched the command prompt from the greater than symbol to the
phrase Your command?. I thought it sounded better than Your turn?
which just makes me want to type the answer, yes.

Also removed are the two status lines. This means that with every turn you
don't get a garbled message stating the location description and the
number of moves you've made.

There's not much to do in the game. You can examine yourself, move between
the bedroom and the ensuite, and that's pretty much it. But it should give
you an idea as to the changes and what will be spoken each turn.

If you type look, or any variation of that command, you will get a
special message. I was playing around with the idea of perception as
opposed to sight. That is, being able to hear things, smell things or
sense that things are there. But it requires setting up a whole bunch of
rules and actions and tests, and I'm still not that knowledgable about
coding with Inform 7. Over time, I'm going to work towards setting up a
system like that. But, for now, I just wanted to hear your thoughts on the
changes I've made.

I've tested it out in WinFrotz TTS and, wow, the difference was fantastic.
Well, at least, to my poorly untrained ears. Smiles.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Cheers,

Neophyte.

His first message did not mention anything about research he had done. He
has asked on several occasions about where to get a game, what a game is
about, or whether it can be played by blind gamers. Maybe I was wrong in
assuming, but his first post about these games appeared to be more of the
same. Questions he could have found out for himself with very little
effort. That's why he gets the responses that he does. This list is not
to

get others to do your research for you. It is for getting help after you
have sought for it on your own, to help if you get stuck in playing a game
rather than for asking for spoilers for a game you haven't even tried, nor
is it meant to take the place of user's guides provided with games. It is
also for discussing aspects of gaming.

Hi Dark,

Well, personally I hate the interactive fiction languages such as
zcode. No doubt my personal bias stems from the fact I am a skilled
programmer and I'm able to see right away how limited those languages
really are. I also know there are better ways of doing the same thing,
but for symplicities sake, symplicity being the word, zcode is popular
with interactive fiction authors, because it doesn' require any actual
programming skill. You are in a big way limited to whatever the zcode
language supports. So for me I wouldn't use zcode for a game like
Oregon Trail personally.

Cheers!

Re:Q9 version 1.2.

I certainly understand where you're coming from, but if the game's too
difficult, it gets to a point where your fastest reflexes won't help you out

for long. Since Q9 is Philip's most recent game, let's use it as an
example. You set game to insane and start walking around. at some point
during the game a rhino, and about 5 other animals come galloping at you at
full speed. what do we do in that situation? we can't kill them all without
taking massive damage in the process, and since there's no way of dodging we

can't attack them on mass, and hope to survive anyhow. so they all attack at

once and we die within 10 seconds. In this situation you could say well jump

away from them. We could do that, but what if there's a pit behind us? Also
remember Q9 enemies follow you indefinitely once they see you so are we just

gonna run all the way back to the beginning of the level, at which point
we'll be trapped regardless? . if we jump forward and over them somehow,
only thing that'll happen is we'll have another pile of enemies from that
side added to our current predicament all ganging up on us. I don't find a
difficulty like that fun or challenging, I find it extremely frustrating.
Console games have a balance between the easiest and hardest difficulties
that stays constant, and also within the realm of possibility to complete.
even games that are extremely difficult and almost impossible to beat have a

multiplayer option, or a way to get health items, or some such feature
that'll spread, or lessen the burden of completing the game and that won't
lead to frustration for the player for the next 3 years. I think if
developers are going to put an extremely hard difficulty, they need to test
it out or at least have a team that's good enough at the particular title to

test it for them, and complete the game first to make 100% certain it's
doable. Don't just put it out there without the slightest clue whether
someone will ever be able to complete it. If I had the programming skills, I

could make a game that has a difficulty setting with 350 creatures moving at

55mph and all attacking simultaneously in 3d space, but I know no one will
ever complete such a game. and if no one can beat it and brag about it, then

what would be the point? the clue's in the name guys. It's called game
difficulty setting, not game impossibility setting. or unbeatable game
setting.

 Hi,
That's a two-sided coin. On one hand I can see how you can be a bit
exasperated with that (like I said, I do think Tarzan Junior is just a bit
too hard). But on the other hand, it becomes a matter of challenge, of
saying, Ok,I made it to the Cave World Level 3, how far will I make it
today? See where I'm going? But as I said, I do agree with you as well.

actually yohandi, I don't personally see that as a bad thing.

there have been plenty of games who's harder challenge has only been
possible for the most dedicated players, and it means you've always got
something new to aime for.

I've finished tj on normal and easy, and got to the honey hunt level on
insane, though that was some time ago and was quite a struggle I admit.

so, it is possible though difficult.

For a bit of training, try the vine speed round.

Funnily enough haiden, I personally always thought of this as one of the
 games' strengths.

I got through easy on the day I bought it (yes, I bought it before it
went freeware), and was a trifle disappointed, but normal took me a
degree more practice to beat and I've never done it on insane.

for my money, this is actually how difficulties should be, so once you
raise the difficulty, you need to raise your game to match.

I also noticed philip seems to carry this on in his other games as well,
in fact generally I'd say formulating difficulty levels seems to be one
 of philip's major strengths.

You should actually give it a try especially as it's free, you can get
 it
 from Tom's free games section.

it was also produced by philip bennifall back when he was running pb
 games,
and has various cool features like cut scenes and multiple weapons,
 pluss
some rather fun bosses and obstacles.

in fact I think my only major problem with the game is that while the
 side
scrolling levels are rather fun, there are also none side scrolling
 levels
 which can vary in quality.

one in particular is especially awsome (I'm thinking of the torgon
 battle
here), but a couple of the others are rather less interesting.

Stil, the game has far more good levels than bad ones imho.

 Beware the grue!

I personally wouldn't like to choose.

superliam is a great game with cutscenes etc, and is stil fun to play,

 in

fact the same could be said for Tarzan junior, however Mota is a far
 more

inervative game sinse it's practically speaking the first true 2D side
scroller with significant use of vertical movement, also it's an
adventure game not an arcade game.

Q9 is simply a case of the concept of a side scrolling arcade game ala
 superliam done exceptionally well.

Re: [Audyssey] Changing the greater than symbol in interactive fiction

2010-11-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Sorry, to report, but that URL is broken. Also I don't think you
should use a question mark in
Your command?
as that is just not gramatically correct. I'd prefer that interactive
fiction developers try to stick to proper punctuation and gramar rules
as best as they can.

On 11/14/10, neoph...@inthecompanyofgrues.com
neoph...@inthecompanyofgrues.com wrote:

 Cheers,

 Neophyte.

Seeing as how they're for FS notetakers.. meaning the braille lites and

That's hardly fair. We ask people to do research first before they ask on
list, so they do research and can't find what they want. Now they're told
that they should try the program first instead of asking on list? I'm hard
pressed to figure out what this list is for, then.

Michael, likely both games are just text. That's the best answer I can

you. If you don't receive better, try Charles' suggestion and let us know.

2010-11-14 Thread Jacob Kruger
Ok, could now try it out, but in winfrotz 1.16, while it will tell me to use
the perceive command, instead of look, it then tells me it doesn't recognise
the command, and the only thing/object it will in fact let me examine is
self...?

The Your command? prompt does seem to work nicely though.

There is a problem with the link to Test.z5,
the T in test should be capitalized which makes a difference in download

interactivefiction

Hi there,

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I've created a very small test room to try out. You can download it from
this url:

www.inthecompanyofgrues.com/interactivefiction/test.z5

I've switched the command prompt from the greater than symbol to the
phrase Your command?. I thought it sounded better than Your turn?
which just makes me want to type the answer, yes.

Also removed are the two status lines. This means that with every turn
you

don't get a garbled message stating the location description and the
number of moves you've made.

There's not much to do in the game. You can examine yourself, move
between
the bedroom and the ensuite, and that's pretty much it. But it should
give

you an idea as to the changes and what will be spoken each turn.

But, for now, I just wanted to hear your thoughts on
the

changes I've made.

I've tested it out in WinFrotz TTS and, wow, the difference was
fantastic.

Well, at least, to my poorly untrained ears. Smiles.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Cheers,

Neophyte.

Hmmm...I'm not sure zcode could quite handle some of the necessaryevents.
Shooting, for example, runs off of a timer. The faster you type in the

the better chance you have of hitting your target. You might need a blorb

I have come across perl before, it's a very popular language often used by
indi developers of graphical games, so there is certainly plenty of
pressident for it to be used in games generally.

I've never actually played this orrigan traile which people mention, so
I'd

be interested to give it a go if it was convertable, though equally I
do wonder if someone made a version for one of the more standard if
languages such as zcode.

That would be welcome indeed.

Hi Muhammed,
In some ways the Braille Lite was and is quite the Notetaker. I have a
BrailleNote, and the calculatoron it is pathetic. With the Braille Lite, we

Seeing as how they're for FS notetakers.. meaning the braille lites and
such, probably not. At best you'd get minimal sounds... but I'm pretty
 sure it's just text.

Heck, it seems almost a tradition that any good game gets delayed a litle.

Sarah, Judgement day, Bgt, books from www.arborell.com and probably a hole
bunch of others (not to mention mota).

I think if a developer realeased a promised game on the given date with no
delays I'd worry there was something wrong with it ;d.

Hi,

I can tell you that VB .NET definitely can not compile it. We are
talking about basic not Visual Basic. The languages are completely
different.

since it will do that sort of automatically with VB6 apps, but not sure

2010-11-14 Thread Orin
Agreed. I loved playing and testing this game. One thing's for sure, people
seriously shouldn't be complaining about the price of this game, as more voice
acting, coding and overall work has gone into this title than any other audio
game in existence. We haven't even scene gameplay or story like this before in
audio games, so I have no idea what you haters are trying to hate on. The fact
that it's not $30 or $20, the price of your standard accessible game? Well,
I've got news for you. Whether you believe it or not, TDV is not a standard
accessible game commonly scene. And unlike most audio games, and this is the
best one, this game is not a walk in the park.

P.S. I know most of the haters probably aren't on this list, mostly on the
audiogames.net forum. However, I just wanted to clarify here that they have no
idea what they're hating. And for the record, you can continue to play the
story and no matter how many times you'll play through it, it's still a
challenge.

So enjoy next week.

Uh... to be fair, I don't think it's a good idea to be going around

frankly don't think we should go around saying that when things like

who's to say what really is the best.

And noone on this list has complained... we've just voiced curiocity
as to why the release is being delayed. I don't personally care
either way, I'm getting it whenever I'm getting it, but I wouldn't
mind some reason as to why I'm waiting an extra week. I have no hard

Agreed. I loved playing and testing this game. One thing's for sure,
people seriously shouldn't be complaining about the price of this game, as

more voice acting, coding and overall work has gone into this title than
any other audio game in existence. We haven't even scene gameplay or story

like this before in audio games, so I have no idea what you haters are
trying to hate on. The fact that it's not $30 or $20, the price of your
standard accessible game? Well, I've got news for you. Whether you believe

it or not, TDV is not a standard accessible game commonly scene. And
unlike most audio games, and this is the best one, this game is not a walk

 in the park.

P.S. I know most of the haters probably aren't on this list, mostly on the

audiogames.net forum. However, I just wanted to clarify here that they
have no idea what they're hating. And for the record, you can continue to
play the story and no matter how many times you'll play through it, it's
 still a challenge.

 So enjoy next week.

[Audyssey] Incorrect link

2010-11-14 Thread neophyte

Sorry about that. As pointed out, the correct link should be:

www.inthecompanyofgrues.com/interactivefiction/Test.z5

Yes, there's almost nothing to do in the game. But it's more about what
you hear each turn. Or, more correctly, what you don't hear!

The perceive mechanic has not yet been implemented. I'm thinking of making
every object have three states: hidden, sensed and understood. Different
levels of perception would mean objects are described differently. An
object you know to be there is sensed. An object you've examined (by
picking it up or touching it) becomes understood.

The question mark was put in the phrase Your command? because, from what
I'm told, the question mark is not picked up by most screen readers as
something to be read, rather as a form of intonation. The colon would be
the most obvious choice, but I'm told it gets read out. What about an
elipses? (That is, three full stops in a row.)

For example, Your command...

I'm trying to find something that will work for both V I and sighted players.

Cheers,

Neophyte.

Re: [Audyssey] interactive fiction test game

2010-11-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Okay, thanks to Phils' link I have just tried the test game. Naturally
I have a few comments about it.

First, good job on cutting down the extra babble. I really appreciated
the fact that the test game cut out all the extra stuff like moves and
such and only told you exactly what you want to hear. That is good.

Second, I have a bit of a complaint. I really didn't like the look
command being changed to perceive. That was, well, quite weird. As I
was not blind from birth I have no problem with things like look
even if it describes the seen as well as adds in some sound and
smells. After all, many blind people say see you later when in fact
they can't see, but it is widely accepted as the proper thing to say.
It wwould be unacceptable to walk up to a woman and say to her feel
you later or to say smell you later even though both are valid from
a blind person's perspective.

In other words, what I'm saying is even though I'm blind I use the
same vocabulary as the average guy out there. It is just that I give
certain words different meaning. Instead of see you later that
translates to meet you later or something like that. Instead of I'm
going to watch the football game that translates to to I'm going to
listen to the football game. Using watch instead of listen is for
convenience sake, and sounds more normal. So I don't think we need to
change some of the commands in the game from look to perceive even
though that might be true. Just make those commands more descriptive
in terms of
sounds, smell, feel, etc.

Finally, I noticed on the main screen it says something to the effect
the bath room is 7 steps to the east. It is not necessary to describe
things in terms of steps. No blind person counts steps, and simply
stating this or that is east, west, north, or south is enough. You
probably wonder why I am making this an issue, but I have a good
reason.

In short, ever since I lost my sight about 15 years ago I've noticed
lots of sighted people have unrealistic stereotypes about my
abilities. I might visit somebody and they right away start trying to
tell me the couch is 5 steps away to the left or something like that.
While I see they are trying to be helpful they are under the
assumption i have to count steps etc to get around when I'm perfectly
capable of finding the couch without counting steps. After all, that's
what my cane is for. However, I'm constantly meeting people with
unrealistic ideas of what I can or can not do and they try to open my
food for me, tell me this or that is x feet away, or some other
sighted stereotype about my abilities. So when I read you say the bath
room was 7 feet away it right away reminded me of those stereotypes.

HTH

Re: [Audyssey] interactive fiction test game

2010-11-14 Thread dark
I agree with Tom on all counts here, the you command? was perfect on the
prompt.

Look is easier to type.

It might be fun however to have specific other responses to other sensory
commands, eg, look is a general, but feel, listen give you other specific
information, - actually that might be awsome in a horror type game.

Also, bare in mind not everyone classified as blind has no vision. I myself
am registered blind in the uk, read braille and use speech synthesis, but
stil have a small amount of vision which I make use of, so for me look is
logical on this score as well, especially if distinguished from other
sensary commands, especially sinse I personally tend to use a lot of senses
in combination, for instance sets of land marks some of which will be
visual, some tactile, some smell (as I said this might actually be fun in
the game, say look giving a general impression and other senses giving more
specific ones).

Btw, one thing which always amuses me is how people seem to think it is
impossible for me to use a flight of stairs.

Frequently, I get directed to lifts for no reason. yes, falling down stairs
would be bad, but that's what I carry the cane for, my legs are fine,
it's just my eyeballs that are disfunctional ;D.

2010-11-14 Thread neophyte

Hey Thomas,

Great, I'm glad the babble is down.

Thanks for taking the time to explain why messing with the look command
is a bad idea. I know any attempt by a sighted person to understand
blindness is fraught with problems, so thanks for not biting my head off
and explaining it all to me in such a clear way.

The test room really isn't intended to be a game, so any of the
descriptions and the player character were not indicative of one I'm
working on. I do like the idea of creating a way to see the world other
than by sight alone, but I'll experiment with that in other ways.

Once again, thanks for the feedback.

Cheers,

Re: [Audyssey] interactive fiction test game

2010-11-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Glad I could help. The over all point I wanted to make was simply
don't be afraid to use common terminology to describe things in the
game or to use as commands. Most of us wouldn't be offended by terms
like look, see, watch, etc because we often use them to fit in with
mainstream society anyway. When we start down the politically correct
path, by changing a command from look to perceive we are setting
the blind individual up to be a special class of person apart from
anyone else when in fact all we want is to fit in with mainstream
society as best as we can. Most of us want to be treated like anyone
else with the exception our eyes are bad and sometimes we need special
equipment, software, etc to be equal with our mainstream
counterparts. Here is a case in point.

I don't know if you intend to show other interactive fiction
developers your test game or not, but if you were I'd prefer it to be
done right. By done right I mean treat it as any other interactive
fiction title but trim out some of the babble as you have done and the
Your command? line is fine too. the last thing we would want is for
other interactive fiction developers to think they have to say this or
that is so many steps away or that they have to add special commands
like perceive instead of look to keep from offending somebody.
That's not at all necessary. So what I'm getting at is since you are
writing an article on this we need to have a clear idea of what to do
and what not to do in future interactive fiction titles.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] interactive fiction test game

2010-11-14 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I do have one objection to your disliking the description
that the room was 7 feet away.
This is a valid description in many games.
Sighted games do not need to describe the distance to things as you can see
them and as you get closer you can then judge when you will reach them by
how far you have moved each step.
When I hear that a book is 20 feet away, and I hit the arrow key once to get
closer and it is now 18 feet, then I can figure how many arrow hits will
take me to it.

There are even times such as on treasure maps that the map says go 20 steps
north, or go 30 steps towards the lake.

I do find my mail box by counting steps even though I have a cane.
I go 26 steps, then swing the cane and the mail box in front of our house is
usually within the reach of the cane.

What I would object to is the game saying
that the book is over there.
Implying that there is a visual arrow pointing to it.
It would be interesting to have a game describe all the senses with
different hot keys.
Such as, L for visual saying that you are in a kitchen with a table and
chairs and a door to the north.

Shift L for hearing, in that you might hear faint voices in the next room.
control l for smell, which would describe the burnt toast on the table.
and control shift l that would allow you to feel the closest object, such as
the plate feels dirty.

Hi Phil,

I think you missed the point. It didn't say 7 feet away. It said 7
steps away which is a big difference. If it said 7 feet away, as a
general description of distance, etc I would have been okay with that.

In any case this is an interactive fiction type game where distances
don't matter much to begin with. typing 'east takes you to the bath
room weather it is 7 feet, 7 steps, or 700 feet away. So distance is
sort of a mute point in this case.

Cheers!

that the book is over there.

Hi Phil,
While those are valid pints, in IF games you hardly, if ever, hear
descriptions of how many step this or that is away from you.

Best Regards,
Hayden

Hi Thomas,
I do have one objection to your disliking the description
that the room was 7 feet away.

[Audyssey] interactive fiction test game

2010-11-14 Thread neophyte

A few quick questions and answers.

Am I going to show this little test to anyone outside of this list?
Really short answer: heck, no. The game was only written to test out the
prompt and status line features. As I mentioned in my previous comment,
this is not intended to be a game in its own right, or become one. It's
just my little test bed. The only aspects I want to share with other
sighted authors is the benefit of changing the prompt, removing the status
line and considering adding more sensory descriptions. For example,
hearing a clock, rather than just seeing it. I do like the idea of setting
up additional sensory commands, though. Even being sighted, I feel like a
lot of interactive fiction just focuses on what can be seen. Why can't the
command examine, for example, also include holding an object and getting
a feel for its weight, or texture?

What's with all the references to distances and so on?
Yeah, sorry. It's all ignorance on my behalf and unfortunately part of the
learning process. I think sighted people try so hard to do the right
thing, or show that we're wanting to understand, that we end up doing the
wrong thing anyway! It's quite interesting the way you talk about fitting
into mainstream society. For me, it's exactly the same, trying to fit in
here at Audyssey. So, thank you so much, I really do appreciate the
clarification and education. Not to mention the cool ideas you guys come
up with. It really does help.

What's the plan?
Well, to be honest, I'm not sure right now. Yes, I'm committed to creating
a document that looks at practical ways interactive fiction can be made
more accessible. When that's written I'll be letting some key people read
it and respond, so that I don't make any big mistakes or phrase something
poorly.

In addition I'm currently learning to code in Inform 7. What I'd love to
do is write an extension that defines a really easy way to make Choose
Your Own Adventure style games in Inform 7, complete with a few options
that I'm playing around with to reduce the babble.

After that, I'm thinking of starting up a short form multiple choice story
competition (with some reasonable cash prizes) to encourage people to get
their creative juices flowing. It's particularly for those who aren't
coding minded, but there will be an innovation prize.

Well, I hope that clarifies a few things.

Cheers,

Neophyte.

Re: [Audyssey] Incorrect link

2010-11-14 Thread Jacob Kruger
I quite liked the intonation of the ? symbol version, and, not really
relevant, but that's just using it with winfrotz 1.16, with MS Anna, windows
XP implementation, set as the computer's default SAPI voice at this stage.

I'm trying to find something that will work for both V I and sighted
players.

Cheers,

Neophyte.
