Re: [Audyssey] sanheisar ear buds RE: Reviewing space in audio
Probably, but while I don't know the brand of those I've got, I actually bought them in the electronic audio department of a large local hardware store - mica. To find something like this here, your best bet is to enquire at somewhere like indelible corruption/incredible connection, or hifi corporation, or makro since they generally have good quality, and a largeish range if a large enough branch. There are also some other, rather audio/visual shops out there, but not everywhere, etc. Stay well Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: NIcol nicoljaco...@telkomsa.net To: 'Gamers Discussion list' gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 5:56 AM Subject: [Audyssey] sanheisar ear buds RE: Reviewing space in audio Hi Dark, Jacob, willem and all Does any of you know if sanheisar ear buds is sold in south Africa? I will say though, despite having an extremely good set of logitech speakers which my very hifi orientated friend and I picked out as the best choice available, and which are wonderful for music and films, stil, if I play a game like tank commander, shades or even pinball xtreme I prefer headphones. My logitech speakers are extremely good, they cost me about 230 pounds or roughly 320 dollars in 2006. However, for immediacy of placing sounds I just much prefer to have the spacial quality of a pair of headphones. Admittedly, my headphones are a fantastic set of sanheisars which cost me 130 pounds, or roughly 200 dollars (though they're well worth it), so even compared to my logietch speakers the sound quality isn't a come down. My point however, is that even if a game required 3D sound and the use of 5 speakers, I would stil by choice use headphones. As in fact I have said in game reviews, for some reason I just cannot get the same accuracy of sound positioning when playing on speakers as I can with headphones. this is actually why i'd prefer things not to require 3D sound even though I have the facility for it. That and of course when I'm on my laptop using my sanheisar ear buds (which are not quite as good as my headphones, but far more portable), I have no facility for speakers at all, yet audio games are a great thing to have on my laptop (I've just today got a new laptop and am at the moment updating all my games to run on it, luckily it stil uses xp sinse it was bought six months ago by my brother but not used). Yeah, TADS is the same way. HTML TADS lets you have multi-layered sounds, just like in World of Darkness. I didn't mean to give you that impression. What I was trying to point out is that I'm not planning on creating an RPG game as advanced as Entombed with sounds and music for every single thing just because that would cost an out ragious amount of money for a game I'm planning to produce as open source,. So sounds and things like that are negotiable depending on cost of course. However, I don't see having a few ambient sounds like the sound of a space station while you are in the watch tower or a background cityscape as you are patroling one of the cities a big deal. I have loads of common effects like that. Plus some effects like punches, kicks, guns, lasers, whatever are more or less easy to come by too if I wanted to have some background effects included. However, as far as things like voice acting I think it would cost too much to come up with anything like that for a free open source game. What I want to do, if I do it at all, is produce something on a shoe-string budget we can build together and have fun with it. Although, I'm not sure exactly why you don't like text games any more. Personally, although I like audio games I find text-based games have a lot better plots, story lines, and everything can be described in detail. Audio tends to really lack this story element and there are certain things visually that can not be, nore will ever be, conveyed through audio alone. Cheers! [Audyssey] WII Game for the Blind
Hi Folks, I found this item in today's Fred's Head. I looked for a price and found none. I think the game is still under development as some of the pages state an April release. WII Game for the Blind March 21 2011 At the end of 2008 the collaboration partners - MAD multimedia, Principal Blue, TNO and Royal Dutch Visio - had decided to give the concept of Serious Gaming a new dimension. Within two years and with a subsidy from Innovative Action Programme in Groningen (Dutch: IAG2) the first official Nintendo Wii game was developed for children with or without visual impairment. The process used for this development is called co-creation, a technique in which the end user is involved in the development of new products and services. Visually impaired, blind and full sighted children contributed to the content and form of this game, while physical therapists, exercise specialists and teachers monitored the motoric aspects. In The Explorer and the Mystery of the Diamond Scarab, you play the role of Ben the Archaeologist who is searching for the Temple of the Diamond Scarab. Once he is in the temple he meets Tiri, an enchanting Egyptian princess. Going through a maze of underground passages they look for ancient Egyptian treasures and confront various challenges. The Guardian leads them step by step to the exit. The game is played on a Balance Board, a standard Wii accessory. With this you can move through the maze, find treasures and enter challenging situations. This is the first game in the world developed jointly for visually impaired, blind and fully sighted children. The game can be played in Dutch and in English. I check out the subject line and if it sounds like I would be interested I would get involved in the discussion. But that kind of game didnt sound like something I would like. most of the time I don't read all the chit chat about games that might be. I might read some messages about a game that is out to figure if I might want to try it or not. I don't have that much time for games so most of the time it might be months before I actually get around to trying a new game out then all the discussion is over. Re: [Audyssey] Mantozuma's return request
About the only thing he had wrong was that it isn't Lucas Arts but Parker Brothers who holds the copyrights to Montezuma's Revenge. The Lucas Arts thing was in reference to the Star Wars game Thomas was considering. Parker Brothers or one of their affiliates were the ones who contacted Thomas about Monte. Either that or he contacted them himself, asked for and was denied permission to use the title. And then if I'm not mistaken a smaller, independent developer also contacted him. The way I understand it is he had to change it from Revenge to Return due to Parker Brothers' holding the rights to that title. And that was when another, smaller developer contacted him to say that he couldn't use the title Return either. That ultimately was what led to MOTA. Nichol was right in that Thomas did ask those of us who had Betas of that game to avoid distributing it since it could land him in legal trouble with that other developer even if not also with Parker Brothers themselves. All I can say is I can only imagine how frustrating and emotionally draining this whole business has been for him. Re: [Audyssey] Montozuma's Return Request
Hi, I'm sorry, but unfortunately I can not. In early 2008 I was contacted bya lawyer for Utopia Software, and I was sent a legal cease and desist order to remove all copies of the software from my website, destroy the source code, and promptly stop selling the game. If I didn't comply with the cease and desist order they were going to take me to court and sue for copyright damages. As I did not want to go to court over it I simply complied with the cease and desist order, and created a new game, Mysteries of the Ancients, instead. As it is a better game anyway that's the replacement I now offer. That said, I've got something in the works, on my todo list, like Montezuma's Revenge. It is a simple side-scroller in the style of Montezuma's Revenge, but without the name, characters, etc of that particular game. Instead its kind of a retro remake with its own unique character and style similar to the original game. Make sense? Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Montozuma's Return Request
Hi Nicol and all, A couple of corrections. The company that originally produced Montezuma's Revenge was Parker Brothers for the Atari 2600 and Atari 55200 platforms. In the 1990's they sold the copyrights for it to a company named Utopia which produced a sequel called Montezuma's Return. Although, Utopia is out of business they apparently still retain the copyrights and are quite willing to enforce their copyrights, and have forbidden me to redistribute, sell, or otherwise make copies of Montezuma's Revenge or Montezuma's Return. For that reason I have completely removed all copies from my website, have disposed of the original source code, and strongly request that nobody redistributes the game. Breaching my agreement with Utopia's legal officials could get me into legal hot water even though I am no longer personally involved with redistributing the game. Those who upload it etc could equally come under fire so I advise that nobody take that risk. HTH On 3/22/11, NIcol nicoljaco...@telkomsa.net wrote: Hi Burak I am not tom, but I will try to answer. Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts on Community Projects
Hi Hayden, Yeah, I know. When I first played the Infocom games I had hours and hours of fun playing through them. There were lots of puzzles, lots more character interaction, and of course lots of descriptions you simply can't get through an an audio only medium. Sure I don't have anything against updating the text adventure style game a bit by adding ambient sounds, a little music, and/or attack sounds , etc but that isn't what draws me personally to those games. I'm drawn to the story more than anything else. The chance to get so involved in the world, the story, that I actually think, feel, and act like the character I'm playing. Every character is different, and offers different ways to handle the same situation. For example, let's assume you are playing a Justice League game and you are being attacked by some of Dark Seid's power demons. Batman will fight them using stealth, unarmed combat, and weapons like his batarang to pick enemies off from a distance. Black Canary is a black belt, master of martial arts, so she too will be able to do a lot of damage through unarmed combat. However, she also has a super power, the Canary Cry, which can render multiple aponents unconscious at the same time or kill them if she really goes supersonic sound. Obviously Black Canary's Canary Cry is handy to have if you are out numbered or facing some enemy like Doomsday, Dark Seid, or Amazo who would ordinarily over power Black Canary in unarmed combat situation. Zatanna, definitely one of the coollest super heroines, would probably whipup some nasty elemental magic to clean the floor with the lot of them. She might hit the power demons with a huge elemental fireball or blast them apart with a lightning bolt, or she might turn them all to ice freezing them in place. Zatanna is probably the most virsital character as she has a lot of magic powers at her command including the ability to heal herself in the middle of a combat situation. Its interesting how many different ways you can actually play a roll playing game just by selecting different characters. I often find that this degree of fflexability and an unlimited world of exploration well makes up for the lack of sounds and music. If there are several different characters to choose from and a degree of randomness through dice throws that you've got a game that has incredible replay value. Its random and you aren't going to play the same character twice in a row if you decide to switch from character to character from game to game. I havent' found many audio games besides Entombed that comes close to this degree of nearly endless replay value. As far as low tech goes I think we often forget that board games, card games, etc are still incredibly low tech too. Even if you add sounds like shuffling a deck and stuff they are still are considerably low tech compared to Shades of Doom or something like that. If you play the actual board or card games themselves they don't get any more low tech than that. Chess has been around for close to a thousand years, and although computer versions are available the manual board game is just as popular as it ever was. So I think sometimes people make too much of low tech verses high tech games. There is plenty of room for both. Cheers! On 3/21/11, Hayden Presley hdpres...@hotmail.com wrote: Hi Thomas, Here here! Oftentimes there are more puzzles and possibilities in text--again, no need for high costs as far as sounds and sound design goes. Sometimes, there aint nothing like good ole low-tech! Hi, Right. A lot of the adventure systems have some ability to add sounds and music. Adrift 4.0 allows you to add background ambience for rooms, triggers for certain sounds when you enter a certain action command, and it has graphical maps etc. As I recall Tads also allows you to include sounds, music, and graphics so text games aren't just text any more. Although, there is nothing barring a developer from going straight text only, or combining the two for a more atmospheric game. Cheers! On 3/21/11, Hayden Presley hdpres...@hotmail.com wrote: Hi Charles, You are thinking of text games in slightly the wrong way. There is, I think you might know, a form of Inform story file, known as glulks; the extention is .zblorb. In some ways this is still a text adventurer--you move around in the usually way. However, glulks adds the ability to have graphics and/or sounds in your game. So text in this day and age doesn't always mean only text. Re: [Audyssey] Games we'd like to Play: Psycho Smash
Games we'd like to play. Children madness. In this game, you are a child. You have a gang of eight people. 4 Females and 4 males. You guys beat up this bully which is trying to fight you. However, the teacher gives you a ditention warning, and threatens to tell you to the headmaster. Your gang is really angry. You sneek into a science lab, knock out a teacher with a spin kick, and you grab some highly dangerous chemicals. You go into the koridor, noticing a few boxers. So, you challenge them. Your friends are guarding you, while you beat the boxer to death. You have too watch out though, the boxer can beat you up also. Once you win j the fight, you proceed to the teacher. You chuck all of the chemicals in his face and his face is smashed into pieces. - Original Message - From: Shane Lowe shanel...@insightbb.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 12:42 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Games we'd like to Play: Psycho Smash Sounds like an awesome game! - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Ken the Crazy kenwdow...@neo.rr.com; Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, March 21, 2011 11:45 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Games we'd like to Play: Psycho Smash Hi Ken, Lol! I love it. That would be extremely funny. That does kind of remind me of the original Donkey Kong with some unique twists. On 3/21/11, Ken the Crazy kenwdow...@neo.rr.com wrote: Imagine a donkey-Kong style of game in which an enraged psychopath gets up onto the Sears Tower and starts chucking bowling balls at passers by, and you have to stop him. At first, you're outside the building and so you don't have much warning as the balls come crashing down--all you hear is the thuds, the screaming of terrified people and so on, not to mention the cartoonish boioioioioing if one hits a person. Once you're in the building, climbing the stairs it's a bit easier because the balls come crashing--right to left, fall, left to right, fall, and so on--and they don't always fall in the same places either, because he throws them at different speeds--so they might skip right over that first drop only to fall through the second, or they might make it to the fifth--and don't think of trying the elevators, cuz the psycho disabled them. There would be weapons you can pick up too--hammers to smash the balls, (two hits for the eight pounders, four hits for the 16 pounders,) flame throwers to torch them faster, and also power pills that would allow you to jump over more than two balls at a time, a thing you couldn't ordinarily do. Be careful, cuz if you are hit with a bowling ball, you'll lose health points. Ow! Gosh darn it, that was my toe, or wherever it hit. Being hit in the feet means not jumping as high or running as fast. Being hit in the arms means not being able to use your weapons as well, and being hit in the head means slower reaction time to simulate confusion. Also, the psycho has demolished some of the key stairways up to the top, so you'll need to climb through elevator shafts to get to that next level, which, unfortunately for you, will mean that you have to drop all your current weapons to do it--unless you can figure out a way to turn those elevators back on. You also have to be careful because the psycho has a switch that allows him to do just that, so you might find yourself being flattened by a downrushing elevator. This calls for precise timing--a little patience goes a long way. You can also trick the psycho into thinking you're climbing the shaft by going in, wait for him to start the elevator, run out, wait for it to stop at the bottom, then climb up and ride to the top. Again, very tricky as first, you're probably not on the bottom floor and will have to ride it down a ways before it stops, possibly causing damage to your health points, secondly, jumping off before he smashes it against the roof, and thirdly, keeping stability as he turns it on and off rather quickly, trying to throw you from it. Once you get to the top, the psycho abandons his trunk of balls and grabs two swords. He hands you one and you start dueling. Whoever falls off the building first obviously is the loser and goes for a swim in the lake. Ouch! That was a terribly painful belly flop... The game has no killing, so anyone can play it. The swords don't cause real wounds, so nobody would be offended at it--it would just be a great game for a lot of laughs. I hope to be able to do away with that eventually. I would also like to make the game get harder as you play. Thanks for the comments. Other than that, as I said, I do like the sfx, however maybe yo0u could considder adding some more to the game, for instance some methods of making things harder. thus far I find it a litle too easy, for instance here's my score and bare in mind this was only my second game: 1Misses. 127Hits.
