Re: [Audyssey] Does anyone know about free postage?

2011-06-25 Thread dark

Hi.

Well that seems reasonable, though to be honest for me, and probably for
others, if this is the headband design you were talking about on
audiogames.net, the biggest worry would be getting a web ccam to track it,
sinse no other game or application I have would require one, I'd thus need
to think carefully about whether to get one or not.

Of course, for people who have machines with built in webcams anyway as most
modern laptops come with them this isn't an issue, however this will come up
whatever is charged for the headband or the game.

all the best,

Dark.

A flat rate is a pretty good idea, and it does help things seem more fair
to everyone. I'll have a better idea of a final price once I settle on a
final design for the map and head band.

As far as the game goes, I wanted to mention that it will be free. Time
and time again I have struggled with the decision to sell games, since I
could use money (who couldn't?!) but I also don't want anyone to be unable
to play my games because of financial reasons. These items I'm looking to
ship, are optional accessories to the game, but they are not required to
play it. As I'd mentioned in another post, the game will have keyboard
controls to handle all of the features the headband can perform, and the
tactile map would be quite helpful, but the game still offers its own
navigation methods.

You are correct Dark, future projects can use this head band as well. The
way I figure it, spreading hundreds of these out into the community can
only be a good thing! Not only can I personally utilize it in the future,
but other developers may choose to add head tracking to their own games
since a standard design would already be owned by players. I'm not sure
if that idea would ever catch on, but it's at least neat knowing it's a
possibility.

I don't know a lot about scripting, but I should think you could alter the

modding it, or at least learning from it lol. Of course, I only recommend
doing this if you learn the way I do--that is, by looking at code and
changing it bit by bit.

Re: [Audyssey] super egg hunt +

2011-06-25 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Folks,
I didn't see any message about Super Egg Hunt Plus,so I went to Liam's site
and found:

Super Egg Hunt Plus is coming!
Posted on 13 Jun 2011 by Liam
A few years ago, I released super Egg Hunt. I am absolutely amazed at how
such a simple concept still is enjoyed to this day. so I wanted to do
something special. In comes Super Egg Hunt Plus. what is Super Egg Hunt
plus? It's the same great game, but with some extra features.

first, there's game modes. Running around a grid picking up eggs is fine,
but how can we change it up? Well how about a survival mode where once the
chicken pecks you, it's game over. Or how about a run through a chicken
coop. dodging more chickens and picking up eggs? How about a mode where
Clocks work against you. Picking them up makes you lose time instead of gain
it? and for those who want to go retro, there's the classic egg hunt. Just
Eggs. Along with score boards and a extra special surprise, There is plenty
of fun to be had.

This isn't free is it? Super Egg Hunt plus does not have a fixed price yet.
More information will be made availible when the release date is closer.

so what if I just want to play the free game? there will be a free game,
right? Of course. The free version is not going anywhere. Upgrading is
totally optional. You will never be nagged or bothered about upgrading to
plus. You'll be able to play the normal mode and post your scores like you
always have.

Is there a release date? Nope. Not yet. I have a target of around the second
or third quarter of 2011, but things can change in a hurry and it could be
done before or after that time.

Read more about Super Egg Hunt plus's game modes
Posted on 23 Jun 2011 by Liam
here's a list of the modes you can expect in the release of Super Egg Hunt.
these modes are subject to change.

normal: Standard game. Collect eggs. avoid chickens. clocks freeze the
chicken and add time.

Survival: Like normal. But once you are pecked, game is over. chicken gets
faster over time. Score is number of seconds, plus eggs collected.

chicken coop: two minutes, smaller grid with coop sounds. three chickens.

Minute Rush: collect as many eggs as you can in a minute. NO chickens, no
clocks. just eggs.

Clocked in: Normal game. except clocks subtract time and speed up the
chicken.

Hyper Hunt: normal, but entire Game including clock is sped up.

Classic mode: The classic egg hunt game. complete with old sounds.

Mix up Mode: Every 15 seconds, eggs and clocks are rerandomized on the grid.

Clear The Grid: clear an ever-expanding grid of eggs. Each cleared grid adds
time to the clock. The level number determines the number of eggs on the
grid.

Nervous Breakdown: Imagine hyper mode, chicken coop and clocked in all
rolled in to one. Except the clocks can be both good and bad. getting pecked
by a chicken subtracts 45 seconds from your time.

Re: [Audyssey] alter server down?

2011-06-25 Thread dark

Hi Oriol.

I'm using the latest version 12.3 of Hal (though sinse the release of
version 12 it has been called the supernova screen reader not Hal though is
the same program just with a snazzier name).

Actually hal already reads most elements of the mush window very well using
the virtual focus mode and I've often used this to read output or spell
specific words.

The only thing it won't do is automatically speak incoming text, so if you
could send this via the api the way jaws etc works it'd be fine.

however, I will say i have no complaints using sapi either sinse it's what
I've been doing for the last few years whenever I need direct program
output, eg, when playing muds or a game like lone wolf.

the only issue with sapi currently is this silly interupt problem on my
laptop.

That being said, i am lucky enough to have a decent sapi voice (actually
realspeak daniel), so maybe some Hal users without that would appreciate
streight up Hal support too.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] gaming with Wine under the linux

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Petr,

Storm Dragon and I are working on a faq/howto on this subject, but
playing games under wine is problematic at best. Certain games such as
Shades of Doom have technical problems playing under wine. For
instance in Shades of Doom if you press enter to open a door the game
will crash. I've experienced similar difficulties with Sarah under
wine as well. Other games like Jim Kitchens games work alright
provided you get all the necessary packages installed. Here is a basic
list of things you need if you want to run games under wine.

* Install wine 1.3 or newer. The newer the version of wine you have

cause issues with Orca.
* Install Jim Kitchen's winkit which will help add missing

That's basically the procedure in a nutshell. However, I will say

On a somewhat related topic, I long ago built up a big piece of code
that generates star systems and planets, but never did anything with
it. I've always had this idea that it would be really cool to
integrate that code into a game and let people explore with it, but
it never seemed an appropriate thing to add to a fantasy mud. I
should take another look at that code one of these days.

Actually hal already reads most elements of the mush window very well using

The only thing it won't do is automatically speak incoming text, so if you
could send this via the api the way jaws etc works it'd be fine.

however, I will say i have no complaints using sapi either sinse it's what
I've been doing for the last few years whenever I need direct program output,

the only issue with sapi currently is this silly interupt problem on my

That being said, i am lucky enough to have a decent sapi voice (actually

 streight up Hal support too.

[Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi all,

As I am now in the process of finalizing things in Mysteries of the
Ancients for 1.0 release candidate 1 I would like to get your input on
a few issues I have set aside until now. One of these issues is the
matter of speech output for the game.

As you all know back around beta 18 I rerecorded all the speech clips
using Scansoft Tom's voice. Some have pointed out that the speech rate
is way too fast for them, and they want me to rerecord the speech
clips at a slower rate. I would certainly do so if I could figure out
what is a comfortable speech rate for the majority of players out
there. Its a bit hard for me to personally judge that is I tend to
listen to speech at a faster rate anyway. However, I'd be willing to
give it a try if people are still interested in me slowing the speech
rate down.

Others are just unhappy of the fact that I switched voices let alone
speech rate. I gather quite a lot of you liked Acapella Heather, and
many of you would rather see her return to the final release rather
than Scansoft Tom. Again this is certainly doable if this is what the
majority of you want. Either way I'm going to have to rerecord and
update some voice clips.

Finally, there is a third group asking for Sapi 5 support in the game.
While I'm not completely against the idea I'd like to point out that
doing so would require quite a bit of time rewriting all of the speech
code to use Sapi 5 rather than prerecorded speech as the game wasn't
developed with Sapi output in mind. Though, it is possible.

My concerns with Sapi are this. First, that not everyone owns a high
quality Sapi TTS voice, and therefore some users wouldn't have the
same quality of experience as some of us with better voices like the
ATT, Scansoft, or Cepstral voices to use.Second, I'm working with
Blind Games Brazil and others to make Mysteries of the Ancients
available to foreign non-English speaking markets. Its just easier to
do that when someone can record the necessary speech clips, and drop
them in the speech folder. Finally, last but not least, after we are
done with the Windows release I'm going to pport the game to Mac OS
and Linux and it will be easier if the game isn't tied to anything
platform specific like Sapi 5.

So as I currently see it I can either rerecord Scansoft Tom, restore
the original Acapela Heather clips, or I can record new ones using an
Ivona voice like Jenifer, Bryan, or Ashley, etc. Any thoughts or
opinions?

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] gaming with Wine under the linux

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Petr,

Honestly, I don't know. That's an issue I'm still trying to figure
out. I can get Jim's games to work with the Microsoft voices Mike,
Mary, and Sam, but can't get any of my commercial voices to work with
them via wine.

By the way, when you mentioned opensapi, i tried it with acapela voices,

 voices anna, sam and mike.
I tried to install sapi 4 and sapi 5 voices, but i still can't see them
in voice selection, what i might do to run it?

The newer the version of wine you have
the less problems you will encounter.
 * Using winetricks install vb6run, vcruntime2005, vcruntime 2008,
dinput, directmusic, directplay, directsound, xaudio, xact, and
xinput. This should setup up most of the basic dependencies you will
 need.
 * Download and install Open Sapi for wine from sourceforge. Do not let
it update or change your speech-dispatcher configuration or it will
 cause issues with Orca.
 * Install Jim Kitchen's winkit which will help add missing
dependencies as well as give you the basic menu system for his games.
 * Install games you want to play or test under wine.

That's basically the procedure in a nutshell. However, I will say
though if you are running pulse audio you might have to make some
configuration changes in order to make wine run better with pulse
audio. The other option is to install the alsa-oss package and do
 something like
 aoss wine gtc.exe
to launch something like tank commander with wine and using alsa-oss
 as the default sound driver.

Personally, I think the voice is fine as is. I think you'll run across the
problem that if you slow the voice down to much, people will start to say
that the voice is dragging. If enough people say the voice is to fast and
you decide to slow it down, I think the simplest way to determine the best
speed would be to record a few samples at different rates, and see which
people like most, or another possibility would be to estimate the rate a
person would say the same rate and set it for that.
Personally, I say leave it as is.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Karl,

True, but one of the issues is a lot of those who are making the
requests are foreign speaking customers where English is not their
native tongue. Therefore they want the voice slowed down so they can
understand the game better. That's understandable, but how slow is too
slow and how fast is too fast for them.

I do understand where they are coming from. I had some French and
German in high school and college, and although I know the basics of
the languages I don't speak them every day, and if I were to actually
talk to someone going 90 miles a minute in French or German half of it
would get passed me as I can't process it that fast. That said, as
most of the users do know English I think they could probably get by
with it set to the current rate. It actually sounds a bit slow to me,
but I'm comfortable with the current rate personally.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Mich,

When you mean you sometimes use NVDA are you talking about ESpeak
which is the default synth that comes with NVDA?

The reason I ask is I now use NVDA full time, and have been using it
regularly since about April on my Windows computer. I no longer use
Window-Eyes or Jaws, and telling me speech settings in NVDA would work
for me. It would be easier than locating my comercial screen reader
cds and installing them just to test speech settings.

[Audyssey] MOTA Feedback

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi all,

I released MOTA beta20 at 4:00 PM, and I still haven't gotten any
feedback on it. I was just wondering if anyone downloaded it, had a
chance to play, and if so what were your thoughts?

The reason I ask is I think I've just about got everything stable for
the Windows platform, and I'd like to confirm that everything is
working well. In a case like that positive feedback as in, everything
runs smoothly etc, is just as helpful to a developer as bugs and
error reports. Knowing everything is working smoothly will allow me to
turn my attention to other things like adding levels, user
registration, etc rather than fixing bugs and so on.

Cheers!

Hi Tom,
I certainly oppose it being SAPI driven personally. I'm very open on voices,
just as long as it isn't a rubbish one, but I feel a game like MOTA does
well to be recorded speech.
Yes, I believe the rate should be slowed down though. I do find it rather
difficult to understand at the current rate. Again, I don't mind which voice
you use, whether you go for Acapella, Cepstral, Scansoft, ATT, Loquendo or
anything like that. Just as long as they are not the Microsoft voices like

Subject: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

Any thoughts or
opinions?

Cheers!

Hi Tom,
I have my Jaws quite fast, at around 70%. However, with an audio game where
you have to process quite a lot of information, I would need a steady voice
to go by. I couldn't listen to lots of creatures and traps nearby and start
to examine my surroundings with a voice that's speaking about nine or ten
words a second. I associate that kind of speed with skimming a text document
personally.

On 6/25/11, Karl Belanger karl.belan...@comcast.net wrote:

best

speed would be to record a few samples at different rates, and see which
people like most, or another possibility would be to estimate the rate a
person would say the same rate and set it for that.
Personally, I say leave it as is.

Hi Damien,

Like I said in the post I have plenty of reasons of my own not to use
Sapi. I'm not exactly very fond of doing all the work to add it, and
of course none of it would be cross-platform compatible in the first
place. So I was fully intending to use prerecorded speech of some
kind. I just need to figure out what voice, and speed is satisfactory
for most people.

Hi Damien,

Yeah, i get that. The question is, though, what would be comfortable for you?

That's hard for me to judge as you say the current speech rate is too
fast, and I say it is just right. So if I slow it down it might be
easier for you to here, but for me it would be like the voice would be
talking to slow. There has to be a happy medium where we can agree on
a speech rate. Perhaps I need to look at something like the Ivona
voices which aren't too fast or too slow by default.

From someone who uses Scansoft Tom for everything that I do not use JAWS
with Eloquence for, I like the speech of MOTA just as it currently is. One
thing to consider, though, is that speakers of other languages might find it
not to their liking. If you do slow it down, I wouldn't slow it down very
much. Just thinking out loud, but I wonder if you could get a feel for how
fast other gamers would like the speech set by having them send you a
sample of the speech rate they use, either by a number that you would be
familiar with or in an audio sample.

2011-06-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

Maybe. However, not every speech program uses the same settings when
passing a speech rate to something like Scansoft Tom. One might have a
range from 1 to 100 and another might have a range from 1 to 10.
Setting Text Aloud to maybe 3 might be 30% in a screen reader, and
setting it to 4 might be 40% in a screen reader. Problem is I can't
set it to something in between like 35% which would be the happy
medium between those rates.

much. Just thinking out loud, but I wonder if you could get a feel for how
fast other gamers would like the speech set by having them send you a
sample of the speech rate they use, either by a number that you would be
familiar with or in an audio sample.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Charles Rivard
FYI: JAWS with Eloquence, set at 30 percent, is about the same speed as the
current setting of the speech in MOTA's beta 20. The reason that people
might think that the speech of MOTA is a bit faster is that Scansoft Tom, at
that pace, may sound a bit clipped.

Hi Mich,

Um...As I don't use Jaws I don't have any idea what Jaws sounds like

to know what sinth you are using as a comparison.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output

2011-06-25 Thread Damien C. Pendleton

Charles,
That is quite bizarre. Whilst writing this email, my Jaws is set to 30% now
and that sounds way slower than MOTA's speech voice.

I think MOTA's speech voice sounds more like jaws on 60.
Regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Feedback

2011-06-25 Thread shaun everiss

I have it tom but I honestly have not had time to handle this right now.
At 03:11 p.m. 26/06/2011, you wrote:

Cheers!

2011-06-25 Thread Yohandy
I think I'd use NVDA a lot more if I actually knew what the equivalent of
the Jaws cursor was for that screen reader. Is there even a cursor? I didn't
find any reference of it in the documentation. Please write off list if you
guys know as this is getting OT.
