Re: [Audyssey] Atlantic city blackjack

2011-12-09 Thread dark
Hay Phil, speaking of your windows games list, it's actually getting so huge
now that the page takes ages to load and even going from top to bottom is
problematic.

Have you considdered splitting it into parts? That would make loading and
navigating it far easier.

I know your priorities system would need to change if this happened, but a
lot of the older sites haven't altered for a while anyway.

I hope you'll think about this one.

Michael, we do! not! host! games! on audiogames.net

we merely point people where to get them.

That's why the download links sometimes don't work, sinse they point to a
developers' own download file so if the dev takes the game down it stops
working on the site.

That's why we need a webpage ourselves, and for someone to host the windows
games.

Hey, Phil.
Thanks for doing that for me.
I would also like to see it get hosted on audiogames.net aswell as your
site.
The more sites that the app is hosted on the more chances are that people
will be able to learn about it.

I know that I go to your site for different sources aswell as audiogames.
So once again thank you Phil for doing that.

Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.

2011-12-09 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

That seems a very weerd approach, being as 50 percent of blind people are
over retirement age, and as you pointed out the vast majority even of the
ones under that are unemployed anyway. While Dolphin did fill educational
contracts in this country, sinse those were largely based on personal choice
or the choice of the L e a (local educational authority), they were largely
filling contracts for individuals.

That has also served them well, sinse obviously once a license is bought,
people can maintain their software for a standard upgrade price, and don't
need to buy another license, which is manageable even on incapacity bennifit
and disability living allowence.

Ironically enough with me, it was almost the opposite way around, sinse
after I finished my degree, I assumed the disabled students allowence
wouldn't cover more equipment so bought the upgrades for Hal myself, but
then was told actually, as long as there was some factor in the new upgrade
which would let me work on my course more effectively, i could have the Dsa
pay for it, and sinse the majority of Hal upgrades included things like
greater access to pdfs, ms office or the internet most have been covered by
my dsa, - though by no means all.

Then again I've always tried to be careful and only spend student allowence
on things actually needed for work. That was why when i bought my rowland
r09, I found the price of a mono voice recorder (I tink an olympus model),
had the dsa pay that much, then paid the extra myself for the r09 sinse I
obviously wanted it to do other things than just record my research
assistant reading articals for me, she is also paid out of my dsa as
well, and to preempt a question, no scanning wouldn't work.

Firstly I never found a particularly efficient scanning program at the time
(try combining articals on metaphysics with scan errors, it's not fun).

Also, post graduate research in a humanities subject involves basically
pulling hundreds of jernal articals off a shelf, or scanning a book very
quickly and seeing if there is anything vaguely relevant. I cannot skim
read, neither can a scanner, but by having an intelligent person who knows
my work, can search on the library computer system and can in fact skim read
for me and give me a general overview of an artical, I can sort of
approximate the needed skill, which is why I pay for someone out of my dsa
in this case, more to the point, someone who already has a masters herself.

Hi Dark,

Sure. I definitely do not disagree with you. Dolphin's payment plan
certainly is more fair. So is GW Micro's. However, as Freedom
Scientific is largely funded here in the USA through government run
state agencies they really do not have any incentive to change their
payment plan or be more competitive because they have government
funding.

Someone like GW Micro who doesn't necessarily get a large percentage
of sales through government agencies had to find ways to make their
product more affordable so they started their lease to own payment
plan as well as a traditional SMA payment plan for upgrades. As a
result someone on SSI or SSDI is actually better off investing in a GW
Micro product because its affordable and the company doesn't expect
you to drop $900 at a drop of a hat. Its just not realistic given the
fact over 80% of all blind Americans are unemployed and are living in
section 508 government housing.

Plus ever since I began working with Henter-Joice/Freedom Scientific
products they always struck me strictly as a stuffy white collar type
of company. It was clear from the beginning Jaws, Job Access With
Speech, was intended to be for business professionals and large
corperations. There aim or goal was not to target the average home
user but schools, government agencies, large businesses, or blind
computer users who were gainfully employed in some capacity. It
wasn't intended to be for the average home user, but obviously that's
what ended up happening because BSVI, BVR, DBS, and other state
agencies purchased Jaws, trained their clients, and then could not
successfully find them gainful employment Thus resulting in several VI
users who have state funded computers with Jaws, Openbook, etc but no
decent paying jobs to keep the software up to date.

Cheers!

Out of interest tom is there any bennifit to the new Ui change?

I'm using ie 8 currently because I've stil got windows xp, but frankly I
really dislike multiple tabs, and prefer just to open a window that I can
alt tab too sinse it's far more logical to me to do that.

I've noticed a trend to have lots of crap on the screen, eg, toolbars,
multiple tabs, different ree view etc, and I pretty much turn them all off,
so for me using ie 8 is pretty much like using ie 6.

I've even stil got office 2007, on one machine and 2003 on another, sinse
frankly I saw no bennifit in the newer version.

is this like the silly ribbon controls? Something we just have to get used
to, but which is ultimately just a flashy ui change that is more of an
annoyence than an upgrade?

While I always try to keep up to date software where there is a manifest
bennifit in new versions, such as Hal, winamp and 7zip, not to mention
games, other stuff (especially from microsoft), I tend to be more suspect
of.

I never used to use a mouse, but that was mainly because nothing was
written for it.

In fact it was always thought that the blind needed keyboards and or joysticks.
I payed loads of cash to use a stick before that was popular and had
to get rid of it, still unused.

At any rate I have no space.
Now the mouse is something I am getting used to, though its well
sluggish and less responsive than the keyboard.

I am however about to upgrade it to a gaming mouse.
Its really cool once you get the hang of it.
There is however a keyboard.ini file in swamp to change everything,
though now I am getting used to the mouse I can't wait to program the

Hi Thomas,

Yes, I'm sure that you are correct in that my Celeron 2.4 GHZ 512 meg ram
and my Pentium 2.0 GHZ 512 meg ram computers would not do well at all
running Windows 7. Heck might not even like Jaws 13 for that matter. But
they run plenty fast enough for me with what they are running. You know
like VB6 and all of the games etc that I create with it.

I have down loaded NVDA, but have not installed it. A lady called the other
day and was running it. Maybe it was just over the phone, but the voices
reminded me of old style hardware synthesizers.

Oh yeah, my Pentium computer is running a Triple Talk hardware synthesizer,
not Eloquence.

[Audyssey] PCS games list slow

2011-12-09 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Dark,
You're the first person to say the PCS games list loads slow.
For me it loads in about 6 seconds.
http://www.pcsgames.net/game-co.htm
It could be that your brouser or virus checker are looking at each of the
about 200 links to

determine if it is a virus or if it exists.
That is a feature of some virus checkers.
Sometimes I will get a report that a certain web site is gone and I will
remove it from my list.
I will try to go through each link to see if it still exists.

Have you considdered splitting it into parts? That would make loading and

[Audyssey] Friday's events at Out of Sight

2011-12-09 Thread Charles Rivard
Good morning gang!

Reminder!
Join us tomorrow evening for our special night of auction songs! We will be in
the On Stage room at 8:00 PM eastern. Don't miss all of the fun!

Here are the events scheduled for Friday, December 9th:

Out-of-Sight Trivial Pursuit
8:00 PM eastern
Hosted by Julie, Rick, and Suzy
Location: Game Zone
Join Rick, Julie and Suzy in the game zone, on the 2nd Friday night of each
month, at 8:00 PM eastern for a new game that we are going to call Out-of-Sight
Trivia. There will be 2 teams, a roll of the dice and 5 categories.
If you roll a one the question will be in the donut shop category, which earns
you one point as you should never eat more than one donut at a time. It is also
a great room to drop in and have a chat with your fellow members sometime. If
you roll a 2, the category is Mutt and Jeff, If you or your team answer the
question correctly, you earn 2 points. If you roll a 3, the category is the MP3
room, where you might listen to or answer a question about entertainment. If
you roll a 4, the category is Four of a kind, the correct answer earns you 4
points. and last but not least, if you roll a 5 the category is the Yahtzee
room, which for a correct answer you will earn 5 points. The key here is to
roll a 6 and then you get to choose which category you would like the question
to be from.
If you like trivia, music, and entertainment then this is the game for you.

Family Feud
9:15 PM eastern
Hosted by Kate
Location: Game Zone
Tonight, Kate will host Family Feud. Kate will ask questions from a survey of
100 people and you try to come up with the 5 most popular answers.
It is loads of fun, so come on in and join us!

Have a great day, and thank goodness it's Friday!

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp Chainsaw Bug

2011-12-09 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
I have written this down to check. Thanks for letting me know.

Hi all. When unloading the chainsaw,
 I didn't get fuel for it. I
wonder if this is because you're converting a percentage
 into a number
 divisible by twenty.
The fuel is registered as something of twenty, but in the
 tank it's
something of a hundred. I understand that each use of the
 saw removes
five percent of the fuel, thus meaning that twenty fuel
 becoems a
hundred percent, a full tank, but there might be an error
 of some kind
 in the conversion.

For me, the experience of using a mouse with swamp verses going without is
like comparing prime ribs to a regular steak- you have to try it, get used

I'm so empressed by the game and mouse feature in fact, that I'm ordering a
gun mouse just for this game- so I can feel like I'm using a real pistol!

[Audyssey] Swamp: spawning and loot questions.

2011-12-09 Thread Christopher Bartlett
I've noticed that there seem to be some places on the map that almost always
have loot and have begun wondering how loot generation works. I've also
come across areas with as many as twelve corpses with loot within a very
small distance of one another, which is actually a peril, since the
overwhelming buzzing of the flies can mask the sound of sneaky zombies.
(not suggesting this change, it nicely simulates a loss of situational
awareness.

So, are the locations for loot randomly generated, or are they tied to where
zombies die? if the latter, is there some sort of delay between giving them
sweet surcease and having the good stuff appear on the ground?

There are also predictable concentration points for zombies. The large
packs seem to be on or near roads, with stragglers out in the fields/swamps.
I'm wondering if this is an artifact of their spawning locations or of their
movement plan.

From a story perspective, it almost might make sense to restrict spawning to
a few points around the edge, to mimic an invasion. You could have players
who try to stem the invasion and protect the town getting overwhelmed by
sheer numbers and either having to beat a hasty retreat or becoming zombies.
Speaking of which, might it be possible for player death to result in
zombies of a separate type that aren't counted in the 150 limit? One of the
worst things about a plague of the undead is their tendency to recruit from
the casualties.

Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.

2011-12-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Well, the processor speed of your computers is fast enough to run Win
7, but you don't have enough memory on either one. Windows 7 requires
a bare minimum of 1GB of ram for the operating system and at least 2
GB or more if you want to run Microsoft Office, Jaws, Internet
Explorer, etc.

Anyway, NVDA comes with a free synth called ESpeak. Like you said it
sounds robotic, reminds me of one of the older hardware synths, but
there are other options. I myself use Sapi 5 voices like ATT Crystal,
ATT Mike, or the Cepstral voices since they are much more human
sounding than ESpeak.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp: spawning and loot questions.

2011-12-09 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Loot and zombie placement is totally random around the map, with the exception
of the Safe zone and Sewer. Nothing spawns in either of those, though zombies
do sometimes wander down into the Sewer of their own accord.

The accumulation of loot and zombies in different places is totally a result of
people's normal hunting grounds. There are some pretty heavily used paths that
people tend to take as they move around the map, and these will clear out loot
almost as soon as it is spawned there. Since it's random, sooner or later loot
will spawn in a less traveled area and it will sit there for a while. Quite a
few can pile up before someone ventures there to find them.

Zombie concentrations on the roads is probably due to people traveling the
roads. Lets say you got the attention of several zombies, well they will chase
you on to the road and will either kill you or give up the chase when you've
gotten too far away. Those zombies can randomly wander back out into the
swamp, but it does mean you'll have some larger numbers of them wandering the
streets.

The extra zombie type from dying players would still need to count in the
current zombie cap. I forgot it was set at 150, lol.

I've finally worked out how I want the mission types to function, so I'm
excited about this upcoming weekend! If I'm able to, I really really want to
get at least the smaller missions coded. I believe they will change the game
in an incredible way.

I've noticed that there seem to be
some places on the map that almost always
have loot and have begun wondering how loot generation
 works.  I've also
come across areas with as many as twelve corpses with loot
 within a very
small distance of one another, which is actually a peril,
 since the
overwhelming buzzing of the flies can mask the sound of
 sneaky zombies.
(not suggesting this change, it nicely simulates a loss of
 situational
 awareness.

So, are the locations for loot randomly generated, or are
 they tied to where
zombies die?  if the latter, is there some sort of
 delay between giving them
sweet surcease and having the good stuff appear on the
 ground?

There are also predictable concentration points for
 zombies.  The large
packs seem to be on or near roads, with stragglers out in
 the fields/swamps.
I'm wondering if this is an artifact of their spawning
 locations or of their
 movement plan.

From a story perspective, it almost might make sense to
 restrict spawning to
a few points around the edge, to mimic an invasion.
 You could have players
who try to stem the invasion and protect the town getting
 overwhelmed by
sheer numbers and either having to beat a hasty retreat or
 becoming zombies.
Speaking of which, might it be possible for player death to
 result in
zombies of a separate type that aren't counted in the 150
 limit?  One of the
worst things about a plague of the undead is their tendency
 to recruit from
 the casualties.

Re: [Audyssey] De Steno releases windows game.

2011-12-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

No. If anything else Internet Explorer 9 is far worse than Internet
Explorer 8 for a number of reasons.

First, as I mentioned in a prior e-mail it no longer uses MSAA on
Windows 7 but uses Microsoft's new accessibility U.I. framework which
not all screen readers support yet. This means accessibility is hit or
miss depending on how up to date your screen reader is etc.

Second, Internet Explorer 9 has a lot of stuff on the screen. Not
just the multitabbed browsing--which I like--but a lot of extra tool
bars and other things that add clutter to the interface. Honestly I
hate using Internet Explorer these days because Microsoft has tried to
keep up with Firefox, Chrome, etc and their user interface is no
longer simple and straight forward.

However, the features in I.E. 9 are very much like the ribbon
controls, and is something we'll have to get use to in order to move
forward. All of the major web browsers Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc
all have multitab web browsing so its not surprising Internet Explorer
would add features like that to compete with their competition.Unless
someone is willing to stick with I.E. 6 or 7 for the rest of their
lives they'll have to get use to the new U.I. sooner or later.

As for myself I don't use I.E. I've switched to Google Chrome because
it is A, very accessible, B, much faster, and C, the U.I. has a lot of
features packed into a simple user interface. Google is turning out to
be a great software developer, and seam willing enough to make their
products fairly accessible as they can. I guess what I like about
Chrome is its not bloated like I.E.

While I always try to keep up to date software where there is a manifest
bennifit in new versions, such as Hal, winamp and 7zip, not to mention
games, other stuff (especially from microsoft), I tend to be more suspect
 of.

 Beware the grue!

Ha ha ha ha or is it ho ho ho ho. Anyway, my thoughts exactly.
However, you are right even though Freedom Scientific doesn't directly
support Microsoft's Free Cell, Hearts, Spades, Solitaire, etc you can
get most of the Windows games elsewhere in an accessible format.
Although, they are gits for not at least providing some support for
the Windows games since I do know the versions for Vista and Windows 7
can be played with a screen reader.
