hi tom,

i totally agree with you. i really don't see any point in massive c drives i
really don't. i've got 5 external hard drives connected to my pc. so as you can
imagine booting up actually does take a while but it's not because of the
amount stored on my c drive lol.

i'm not someone that goes around fixing pc's etc, but i would still consider it
common sense to not put stuff on the c drive if only because if ever you have
to format the system, at least you won't lose all your material as well. yes
you can move stuff off usually before formatting but there are instances where
something may stop you from doing so. drive corruption for 1 and lets be honest
the more you access a drive the more chance there is of it being corrupted. so
it stands to reason that c drive stands a pretty good chance of going first.

[Audyssey] swamp: mission thoughts

2012-10-21 Thread john
I'm finally getting back into swamp a bit, and more and more I'm
wishing we had longer missions. Not that we'd have to find more
crates, but that there was some kind of mission that would take
over half an hour to do instead of five to ten minutes. I'm not
sure how this would work; 150 crates isn't quite what I had in
mind, but overall I'd like to see something longer, perhaps with
more of a story.

Any thoughts?

Re: [Audyssey] Slightly off topic: smugglers 5.

2012-10-21 Thread Ibrahim Gucukoglu

Hi Thomas.

I regularly maintain and optimise computers for customers and I can assure
you that simply isn't the case. Its more down to the ignorance of users in
basic computer maintenance teqniques, added to the fact that manufacturers
don't seem to want to put basic maintenance software or even set up a
maintenance schedule using the tools in Windows on their computers. There
are a number of things you can do, including regularly defragmenting and
cleaning out the hard drive and registry, optimising the list of services
and start-up programs that load with Windows, cleaning out browser cache
files and cookies; These are all relatively straight forward and can be
performed with little or no effort. I recommend programs that can do most
if not all of this for the customers as part of their consultation as well
as train said customers in the use of these tools where appropriate.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi,

Yes. I might add if a computer user uses the c: drive exclusively for
the operating system, programs, etc while putting documents, mp3s, and
basically everything else on an external drive it will massively
improve performance.I can't tell you as a computer tech who does
computer repairs how many people ask me why their computer is running
slow and I only have to look at their personal documents folders to
see they have a billion pictures, mp3s, etc which is causing the PC to
slow down because the OS is taking longer and longer to find stuff on
the drive. Its one of those things that most computer techs know, but
never seems to be learned by the majority of average PC users. They
seem to think they can run out and by a new PC with a huge 2 TB drive,
fill it up with pictures and music and not expect the PC to slow down
or take forever booting. Let alone have a plan in place for backing up
all that stuff in case their computer dies. I suppose that kind of
misunderstanding is encouraged by PC manufacturers by adding larger
and larger drives to the PC when a drive that big is better as a
storage drive not as a primary startup drive.

Well Darren, I've heard of those, but there weren't any available when i
decided I needed another drive besides the C drive, plus I do like the
convenience of having everything internally and using an external drive to

Fortunately I do also use avg pc tuneup to do all the tasks like fixing
registry errors, replacing shortcuts, deleting various temporary files and
defragging the disk, so both of my drives are fairly clean.

indeed, pc tuneup actually sped up my pc's performance by no end!

Re: [Audyssey] swamp: mission thoughts

2012-10-21 Thread Richard Sherman
Hi,

It sounds like you are asking for different missions, but that take longer
and with more of a story line then correct?

Because currently the missions can go either quite quickly or relatively
long. it just depends on how many you have join, and how good those people
are. I have heard of last man standing missions lasting well over a half
hour. also missions into warehouse 4 can take well over an hour.

I do agree more missions with different styles than just collecting crates
would be great. But I don't have any suggestions. But if you do, throw
Aprone a message with the suggestion and as much detail as you can.

Also, there is a swamp folder being shared thru drop box. It has in it 4
maps you can play in off line mode. Sorry none of them have been
incorporated into multiplayer. But it does give you something else to try.

Or you can always create your own map and send it to aprone with your ideas
and suggestions.

Plus keep in mind a new version should be on the way soon. So it may just
contain some of your ideas in it. give it a look when it comes out and go
from there.

HTH.

Hi Darren,

True enough. Windows is especially bad about drive corruption and that is
why Microsoft has to have tools like Disk Defrag to maintain the partition
table. If they didn't the partition table where Windows resides would
defragment and eventually become corrupted beyond recovery. That is
precisely why I don't leave a lot of personal data on my C: drive unless I'm
copying it to my laptop for portibility.
Even then the data itself is backed up 12 ways to Sunday. :D

Re: [Audyssey] swamp: mission thoughts

2012-10-21 Thread john
I was under the impression that development had somewhat
stagnated. Is there something on the audiogames forum that I
missed? I don't often check there.

- Original Message -
From: "Richard Sherman" It sounds like you are asking for different missions, but that
take longer

and with more of a story line then correct?

Because currently the missions can go either quite quickly or
relatively
long. it just depends on how many you have join, and how good
those people
are. I have heard of last man standing missions lasting well over
a half

hour. also missions into warehouse 4 can take well over an hour.

I do agree more missions with different styles than just
collecting crates
would be great. But I don't have any suggestions. But if you do,
throw
Aprone a message with the suggestion and as much detail as you
can.

Also, there is a swamp folder being shared thru drop box. It has
in it 4

maps you can play in off line mode. Sorry none of them have been
incorporated into multiplayer. But it does give you something
else to try.

Or you can always create your own map and send it to aprone with
your ideas

and suggestions.

Plus keep in mind a new version should be on the way soon. So it
may just
contain some of your ideas in it. give it a look when it comes
out and go

from there.

HTH.

From: "john" I'm finally getting back into swamp a bit, and more and more I'm
wishing we
had longer missions. Not that we'd have to find more crates, but
that there
was some kind of mission that would take over half an hour to do
instead of
five to ten minutes. I'm not sure how this would work; 150 crates
isn't
quite what I had in mind, but overall I'd like to see something
longer,

perhaps with more of a story.

Any thoughts?

Re: [Audyssey] swamp: mission thoughts

2012-10-21 Thread Richard Sherman
HI,

Hadn't checked the fourm lately? you may have missed some things. Check it
out. The thread URL is

http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=6341&p=220

This is the last page of the discussion.

Aprone has mentioned a bit, mostly in the game, that a new version was on
the way. As far as I know it deals mostly with security and connection
issues. but rumors abound that it may include new weapons and missions. the
hard core player mode has been slated for a release in the future for now.

as always, Aprone for the most part has been tight lipped about what and
when. Personally, I don't care when, it will get here when it does.

and if you missed it on the audio games forum, he has been putting out
little missions mostly with dires attacking certain portions of maps. We all
come running and put them dires 6 feet under. The nice thing about these
attacks is that some times it may be possible to get extra items not
normally found. These may include running shoes, shorts, and bunny slippers.

BTW, for anyone reading this who does not read the audio games forum topic
regarding swamp. today is swamp's 1st birthday. Woo Hoo.

Re: [Audyssey] Slightly off topic: smugglers 5.

I aggree with you tom.
I know a person, a local admin that doesn't use antivirus, spyware
firewalls or even updates anything because it would be damaged by the
updates or software.
His view is that its all coman sence, and you just turn everything
off when not using it.
Though in a perfect world I'd aggree with him I couldn't be bothered
doing that.

Though seriously he is probably correct.

At 07:40 p.m. 21/10/2012 -0400, you wrote:

Hi Dark,

Well, in terms of Windows 7 verses XP the local directory structure
has been redesigned and makes more sence. Rather than music, videos,
pictures, all going into your My Documents folder all of them are
separate in your Home directory.

For example, on Windows 7 my home directory is c:\Users\Thomas. Under
c:\Users\Thomas is Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, and
so on. Therefore if I click on the Thomas icon in the Start Menu all
of my documents, music, and videos are organized logically anyway. I
see no need to put my music in c:\Music when I can bring up the Start
Menu, cclic on the Music icon, and go directly to
c:\Users\Thomas\Music instantly or click on Thomas and then on Music.

As far as the issue of choice you can still choose to put your files
anywhere you want them if you disable security features like User
Account Control, but it isn't the safest thing to do. The entire point
of Microsoft restricting your c: drive from general use is to protect
it from unauthorized users and from malware. What you see as an issue
of choice Microsoft sees as an issue of security. Sometimes choice and
ssecurity aren't compatible, and this is a case in point.

I might add that putting all of your faith in antivirus software etc
is a bad idea. That isn't the only kind of security threat you have to
worry about. Several years ago, back in the Win 98 days, I remember
hearing about a rash of attacks where people were prowling chat sites,
and once they found someone, they would get the other persons IP,
login to their PC, and steel their personal data or destroy their data
for kicks. The internet is a nasty place and if you think you put
software x, y, z on there and are safe think again. There are all
kinds of ways for people to hack into your internet connection and
whipe your drive before you even know what hit you. The more layers of
security you can put in place the less likely you will be a victom of
cybercrime. That's the reason for UAC and the other things Microsoft
is doing.

tasks. However, I will stick to my point the more stuff you put on the
drive the slower it will get.

To give you an example there was a Win 7 computer here that I did
basic maintenance on which improved system performance but it still
booted slow and took forever to load applications. It turned out my
wife had 250 GB of pictures and videos on the drive. We got an
external drive, moved everything to the external, and deleted
everything from the c: drive. The moment we deleted all 250 GB of

Hi Tom.

Fair enough, at least not having them in a folder who's name refers to
documents helps, though given that uac seems to cause problems for
installing older software I'll have to turn it off anyway so that's not
really as much an issue for me.

Of course, the ultimate in security is frequent backups, which is why i do
that on a very regular basis, and really there's no better way to keep stuff
safe.

when my first machine broke in 2008, I'd have been in a right mess without
all my backups, indeed I've got stuff on there which I've head for years,
such as the 2nd edition d&d rules in ms word format, as well as lots! of
games and audio.

Hi Tom.

I have never heard of passport drives which is why I backup on a powered 2
tb external. I do however frequently use thumb drives to transfer small
amounts of stuff from my desktop to my laptop and visa versa when I've been
using one or the other, or when I want to give something to a friend,
however sinse a full backup of my machine would be about 600 gb worth they
aren't big enough for a perminant solution, usefull though they still are.

[Audyssey] Swamp's birthday

2012-10-21 Thread Richard Sherman
Hi,

In celbration of swamp's birthday, a new topic was created at audio games. The
link for this is

http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=9047

The very first post was done by BCS993. He did a 3 part mp3 presentation worth
listening to. The link for it is in that post. In this, he interviews Aprone
who talks about among other things upcoming ideas he has for swamp. A well
worth it listen to.

I tip my hat off to Aprone for a great game. Keep up the awesome work.
