Hi Tom.

On the issue of firefox, well fair enough, however bare in mind
that for someone like myself who lives alone and is also ethical,
sighted assistance means physically paying someone as I do my
research assistant, which is why I describe it not as a viable
option, particularly as lots of organizations like the Rnib hear in
the Uk do little to nothing about access "because your carer can do it"

As regards google, their old audio captures system worked fine on a
set of good speakers or headphones I found, and indeed in
discussing capture access to several devs I recommended it as an
accessible alternative.

However, that is no longer the case, and given that google do! tout
this as an accessible alternative something really does need to be
done. It is pretty obvious to me that when changing their audio
captures, they never actually had anyone test them without
reference to the images, since I've never actually managed to get
them right, however given how hard google are to get hold of I
don't even know how to bring this to their attention since the very
captures that are the problem exist on their mail contact form.

This is also a stark contrast to the way google used to be. i
remember in around 2005 needing to setup a google groups account,
and they had no alternative captures at all. I however simply
phoned their technical support line (their mail form also had a
capture), and someone created me an account with a password I later
changed. I was quite impressed at that level of access, sadly that
doesn't seem the case anymore.

Re: [Audyssey] Solving Captchas was Anymore RPG Games?

2013-04-08 Thread dark

Hi charlese.

I pay someone since it is not reasonable to ask people, especially with how
often capchas or however the hell it's supposed to be spelt show up, to go
downstairs and bug my neighbor would just be unfair.

I actually did this when I got my friend (who works as my research
assistant), to read me dvds so that I could lable them with my penfriend.
She offered to do it for free but I insisted upon paying since then I could
ask her again without feeling a major sense of guilt, and indeed I have.

While I totally agree sighted assistance is necessary for various things,
that doesn't make it a right either, especially when the government pays
disability living allowance just for this purpose.

[Audyssey] finally solved the bug with swamp and my mouse

2013-04-08 Thread shaun everiss

Hi.
Just tried my logitec mx518 gaming mouse on another computer.
I tried on the campaign release of 2.9 rel27.
If I swing my mouse left and right with axe killing zombies, the
thing will drop out of focus.

more often than not the game will loose track of my mouse and drop me out.
I have killed the driver software as I feared it was covering things
up which it seems it was doing.
in 2.9, I can move my mouse right and go south east and south west
but not left and all the buttons seem to make the game loose focus or
what I thought it was doing.
The mx518 is a powerfull mouse ofcause but still that worked in 2.8,
so its a tracking issue the game seems to be loosing track of my
mouse movements for some reason.

I know this is outside the dev time though.
interestingly enough the same behaviour then effects all my mice on
this box but its got other issues to so who knows.

Hi James,

Basically, Swamp is an FPS game about a zombie apocalypse. You and a few
survivors have a safe house you use as a home base for fighting the zombie
hoards as well as gather up equipment, weapons, and other gear. It has a
built in chat system, networked game play, etc.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Solving Captchas was Anymore RPG Games?

2013-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Well, I never said that sighted assistance is always available, not
even for me, but I wanted to make the point that sometimes its the
only solution to a problem like solving a captcha where Webvisum fails
to work and the audio captcha is inaudible.

As far as Firefox goes we will just have to agree to disagree on that
subject. As I said before I don't know why it crashes and runs so
poorly on your machine, but it is not been my experience. I have
Firefox 19 running on three different computers, one of them Linux,
and the other two running Windows 7 and it rarely crashes if ever. So
the stability issues sounds to me to be something local to your
computer or OS. In either case your experience isn't the norm for most
people otherwise Firefox wouldn't be consistently rated the number one
web browser world wide.

Regarding Google I don't know if they test their audio captchas or
not. However, its obvious they haven't tried to many of them because
it is nearly impossible to hear what it is saying even for people with
perfect hearing.
I unfortunately have some minor hearing loss and it sounds really
garbled to me, and despite trying to complain Google does nothing
about it. So I do agree they need to be taken to task over their
captcha accessibility. Especially, since many websites and games are
now using Google as the standard for captcha technology.

Hi tom.

Well I don't disagree that for programmers more complex editers
are a
distinct advantage, for the reasons you describe and for changing
behaviour,
however for everyone who is not! a programmer, (which comprises a
large

group of people), the situation is different.

Also, just because you have an engine that doesn't have
scripting, that

doesn't mean you can't create different things.

Imagine for a second that shades of doom had a level editer. You
could with
this editer create entirely new maps, placing enemies where you
want them
along with weapons or deciding to have the game set them at
random.
That already would offer a huge amount of customization, since in
a game
like shades maps make a lot of difference and the behaviour of
different
enemies is tactically distinct enough for players to create some
quite
unique situations, especially when you add in doors and keycards
to create

maze puzzles.

Lets say however, the editer would let you do a little more. You
could mod
the game's sounds and add in your own for each pack, and you
could change
some of the properties of enemies, namely their affective range,
what damage

they do, and what health they had.

Even if you couldn't change the weapons, this would already let
you create
something quite different. You could for instance replace the
mutant humans
and other sounds with human ones and create a game where you
infiltrated the

hq of a criminal gang.

You could replace the sounds with robotic ones and give everyone
ranged

attacks and make an sf game etc.

Even without changing the basic weaponry or capabilities of your
character,
much less anything more fundamental in the engine, you could,
through
changing just the environment, redesigning the layout and
altering some
enemy properties, create an entirely different game from the
original

shades.

This is actually how the turrican editer works on a graphical
level. Same
gameplay, different enemies ad properties, very! different
layout.

Of course, altering properties on a flip down menue or modding
sounds isn't
necessary either for a full editer. Even if a shades editer was
made where
you could only move game objects around, players could still
create some
vastly different mazes and configurations of enemy position,
locked doors
etc, and thus change shades of doom from a game with 9 levels
who's layout
you can learn quite successfully, to a game with many more who's
layout you
have to relearn with each new level pack, a challenge for
everyone.

than these darned captchas! Most of the audio clips are darned near
impossible to hear because of faint and or garbled recordings, and I've
heard that a lot of them are written on a monitor in such a way as to be
hard to read for sighted people, too. To me, they are an unnecessary

I do not find it necessary to make them difficult or impossible for human

Hi Anouk,

Well, granted Firefox isn't accessible on every platform, and that is
a bit problematic. As far as I know access to Firefox is currently
supported on Windows, Linux, Android, and a few other Unix clones
running the Gnome desktop and Orca screen reader. I've only tried
Webvisum on Windows and Linux with Firefox, and it does pretty well in
those environments, but if you are running Mac OS or iOS then you will
have to locate an alternative for solving captchas. I know there is
suppose to be a couple of websites you can use to solve captchas, but
don't really know anything about them since Webvisum is the only tool
I generally need.

In this case I just tried Webvisum with Puppet Nightmares and it
seemed to work fine. That's good news for Windows and Linux users who
want to play the game, but bad news for those Apple device users. So
in the end getting some sighted assistance may be your best bet.

Cheers!

The readme file has some. The changelog file has more details, and once
you've read at least part of those take a look at the keyconfig.ini file for
exact commands. Documentation is slightly scant at the moment; if you're
stuck just log into the server and ask there, somebody should be willing to

2013-04-08 Thread john
Speaking of new weapons, I'd anticipate having an updated weapons
guide within a week or so; with double the existing count it's
going to take me a while to get enough info to write anything
major for them. Also, and this is primarily targetted to Aprone,
if I could get some help pointing out on which maps the new
weapons show up I'd really appreciate it; I've written down where
you can find all the weapons as of 2.8, but I've never found any
of the new ones, so updating that specific portion might be
rather difficult.

Re: [Audyssey] Solving Captchas was Anymore RPG Games?

2013-04-08 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

Sighted assistance isn't always available, indeed I'd have to pay someone
for that sort of thing myself.

Firefox as I said I just don't wrate at all since it just seems unstable and
badly designed to me given how much it crashes.

I've tried the solona website which was supposed to have people solve
captures by sending a screen shot, but whenever I sent one the person on the
other end of the site sent a message back saying there was no capture on the
screen and even threatened to ban my account, so that seemed no good.

Really I hold google to blaime very much for captures, since up until
recently their sound captures were quite a good accessible alternative, and
one which lots of devs used or which a dev who had an inaccessible capture
could be pointed to, but it's pretty clear from the way their desitned that
nobody actually ever tried! to solve the captures just with the audio,
making them basically a tocan gesture, which in a way is worse than no
access at all since now lots of devs employ them thinking they've got an
accessible alternative, when they haven't.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

2013-04-08 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

as I've said before, I have tried firefox and it constrantly crashes, to
the point o being unusuable. Plus, by all accounts webvisiion is a long way
from being a uniaval solution even when it does! work properly, especially
for games that need lots of captures.

Frankly google just piss me off, particularly since when I tried to contact
them over this bloody capture, guess what, there was a capture on their
contact form, I even tried phoning their uk office but that was
impossible due to needing an extention to even speak to anyone.

I persoally hate captures with a passion reserved for the black death, and
indeed if the gm of puppet nightmares or any other game wouldn't considder
an alternative method, such as creating accounts on requires for vi members
who E mail, I'll be removing them from the db.

all the best,

Dark.

Hi James,

Basically, Swamp is an FPS game about a zombie apocalypse. You and a
few survivors have a safe house you use as a home base for fighting
the zombie hoards as well as gather up equipment, weapons, and other
gear. It has a built in chat system, networked game play, etc.

Cheers!

Speaking of minor bugs, two things I noticed:
Firstly, the m79 doesn't seem to want to remember range settings when you
switch weapons. Also, the I key in the keyconfig file is originally set to
do both ping player tracker and open inventory.

Re: [Audyssey] Corporate VS Independent DeveloperswasModeratorMessage

2013-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

I see your point, but again this is probably where you and I differ
when it comes to advanced user verses standard user comes in. If I am
going to have a level editor I am going to want to script things, to
be able to change the behavior of characters and items, rather than
just place them on a map and let the engine take care of all the rest.
It gives both the developer and the end user far more flex ability in
creating new game content.

Let's use Montezuma's Revenge as a simple example here. When I wrote
that game the skulls would roll left and right across the floor along
the x axis and your character had to jump over them. I could create a
simple level editor such as you describe just placing the skulls in
various rooms, and let the engine take it from there, but it doesn't
allow me to change or alter the behavior of those skulls. If I had a
way to script levels, in particular the behavior of enemy objects, I
could add additional enemies to the game such as the skulls that
bounced up and down along the y axis without altering the engine
itself which would be more of an advantage in the long term.

That said, a simple 2d level editor that doesn't require scripting
should be pretty easy to create all things considered. Basically, all
we would need is a 2d grid of say 100 by 100, and a few pull down
menus to draw content on the map such as doors, walls, fire pits,
ropes, ledges, and other level content.. You would select the item to
draw and it would then place it on your grid. As you move over the
grid Sapi could announce door, rope, fire pit, ledge, or whatever was
drawn in that position. So its not an overly difficult thing to do.

I guess what I want to say is I'm not against the idea of a level
editor so much as I'd like to have more control over the content I'd
add and create. While it seems pretty simple to create a basic level
editor that does not require any scripting I can see it being a bit
limiting as well. Still, even if I did have a simple level editor,
track editor, and other such tools I can see how they would increase
the amount of playable content available in audio games.

Cheers!

Hi,

just a quick note. I also had trouble hearing the captcha, so I tried
webvisum on it, since I'm using Firefox anyway. But webvisum didn't work on
this site for me, so this isn't always a solution.

[Audyssey] Solving Captchas was Anymore RPG Games?

2013-04-08 Thread Thomas Ward

Cheers!

Hi Thomas, the thing is that firefox is not available (as an accessible
product) on all platforms. For e.g. ios and mac os x in general. I know
there is ios for android and linux that is accessible but wonder if the
plugin will work there?

Speaking of minor bugs, two things I noticed:
Firstly, the m79 doesn't seem to want to remember range settings

my mouse or part of my system refuses to play 2.9 properly so I won't

decisions on what I do.
Right now though my life is just to busy to make any critical
desicians right now.

So I do hope you come back when you have sorted things out.

At 06:38 AM 4/8/2013, you wrote:
My apologies to the people of Audyssey, I forgot to post this here

Today is the last day for Swamp before development will stop and it
is to be considered a completed game. So before the day is over I
will be bringing 2.9 in as the new official version. I may
eventually post a version 3.0, but that would just be to fix any
bugs I miss in 2.9. The decision to end Swamp development here is
because mine and my wife's work is changing and I'll be forced to
get another job in 2 months. By ending Swamp development now, it
will give me 2 months to work on my next game project before I'll be
without any free time to work on anything.

Okay now here is some rather big news that people will probably want
in on. Here's a bit of a back story just so this will make more
sense. During the life of Swamp, people have donated money from
time to time. As certain people's donations totaled up to a certain
amount, I secretly sent them official Swamp bunny slippers as a
thank you. These were actual physical bunny slippers, and not just
in-game items. I kept it pretty quiet because I didn't want people
donating money just to get those items, since that would make me
feel like I was cheating. Oh, and before I go any further let me
say that this no longer applies. After reading this, if someone
sends me a big donation, there's no way it will lead to you getting
bunny slippers. Sorry. smile

Well I was supposed to send out another one of these in January
(Oops!), but it is still sitting on my desk in a box, with the
address and everything already filled out. I'm just lazy or
forgetful, or both. Well now that this is Swamp's last day before
being complete, I realized that I have 1 extra pair of official
Swamp bunny slippers! big_smile I'm announcing the official Swamp
bunny slippers give away contest!

For today only, or rather for the next maybe 6 hours, I'm accepting
emails to enter yourself into the drawing. I'll have my wife
randomly select a winner from the participants so that it is
fair. The winner will be sent the last remaining pair of Swamp
Bunny slippers! big_smile Here are the instructions, and anyone
who fails to follow them will not be added to the entry list.

In your email you must include your name, and also your mailing
address. I know people will want to know who wins before they send
me this information, but if I do that I can already predict a bunch
of time wasting issues that will pop up. The guy who wins will
probably take 2 days to reply and tell me their address, then it
will probably be missing some key piece of information, and another
2 days later they'll say their parents don't want them giving out
their address. ROFL! So to avoid that, anyone who doesn't send the
right information just won't be in the drawing. This way I'll
already have everything I need to send the prize to the winner.

You can use the audiogames.net forum emailing option to email me, or
you can use Jeremy at Kaldobsky dot com. Do not put your
information here on the public list, LOL! That would not be a good
idea. Good luck everyone!
