[Audyssey] Mud Sounds

2015-05-06 Thread Jeremy Brown
Dark,

I played with Telnet on Jaws, and I can assure you, it probably wasn't
any better than Supernova:) It was a pain, I often missed things, and
it was tricky. Using a client helped some by providing better alias
control and some triggers, but essentially, I had something of the
same experience, except there are more Jaws users on A.A. or were at
the time, than anything else.

The problem is the same problem but with screen readers: everyone
assumes that people use whatever the most popular or what they think
is the best screen reader is:) Also too, again, not everyone uses
either their own or multiple screen readers well. I have no idea how
to help someone on a different screen reader, and beyond a certain
point I have to look up things in a Jaws manual or ask someone more
knowledgeable to perform advanced functions with Jaws.

As to the introductory text argument. I learned to play Alter, and
learned to play it well because I read help pages while I regenned and
made extensive use of the help -random feature. However, you and I
are in the minority in reading text beyond a certain point. The
reason web sites break text into such small chunks is that (pardon me
while I display a bias against the handicapped) sighted people are
growing unable to read large blocks of text. Blind people are
beginning to display this trend more as well. I help out on the
newbie channel on Alter Aeon and help out catching questions on other
high traffic channels. At least 50% and probably a much higher
percentage of questions that get asked could be answered by the askers
if they only read carefully.

I'm not saying all this to say a disclaimer wouldn't be in order, but
I doubt if it would really be effective at combatting the trend at
all. When I started playing Alter, I did so because I had played
interactive fiction for years, and found Alter on the Audyssey list.
I wanted something text based. The kids now playing Alter have grown
up in a market where sound is the primary distributor of information,
not text, and they want sound. Dennis in choosing to make mush-z the
primary way to getting blind players into the game has recognized not
only the popularity of the client and its sound pack, but by choosing
a main method of connecting blind players that he has helped work on,
he has a better control over helping out new players. Not all the
admin staff on Alter, nor the player base that help out with
questions, know mush well, but if an admin, avatar, or newbie helper
knows a person is using mush, there's a channel for questions about
mush where we can direct them, and there's usually people online who
use it, that we can tap for information.

I regret the dying of the text game too, but I don't think it can be
reversed by a disclaimer.

Take care,

Jeremy

Re: [Audyssey] Mud Sounds

2015-05-06 Thread dark
As far as text games go, actually it's quite surprising just how popular
text games are, look at the choiceofgames and hosted games. I tend to find
the issue with muds is a more specific mud thing, because muds perport to be
real time online rpgs, and thus alteraeon gives people the impression of
something which is (as one blind member put it), sort of like accessible
world of warcraft.

That is what I mean about a message to the fact that alteraeon is not a
mud, it's got nothing to do with text games generally, just the fact that
alteraeon isn't representative of how muds work.

As to people wanting sound, well the thing I find quite funny about this
discussion is it mirrors one I had with a friend of mine a few weeks ago,
discussing the differences between audio, reading books and watching tv, and
the pacitivity pacivity and lack of extra imagination due to the
presentation of complete reality on screen as oposed to the imagination
required in either audio or text.

I tend to find those people who have a strong audio rather than text
preference tend to be those people who don't particularly read anyway, or
are more interested in pure action and mechanics than atmosphere. For
example, I know audio defense was rather more popular on Ios than anything
of somethinelse other titles simply because it had guns and shooting and
lots of arcade style action (with admittedly some awsome mechanics), so
appealed to people who just wanted an action fest, as well as people like
me who enjoyed the mechanics but also appreciated the game's humour and
atmosphere.

Now I have no problem with people liking action in games, I do so myself,
however perhaps such people should not be playing muds, or should understand
that muds are text games primarily.

Beware the grue!

Hi,

Would someone recommend a MUD client for my Linux installation so that
I may play Alter Aeon? I know I can always use telnet, but I would
rather have something that I could customize and maybe even import a
sound pack.

Thank you.

Hi.

This was posted to audiogames.net today, and I definitely think this is an
occasion where people can help, sinse all that is required for an entire
hundred thousand K rant are 250 votes! and then we get a full time
developer!

For those who don't know, graille to the thief was an audio adventure game
(not a first person one, one of the choice style ones), developed by
foralltoplay.

The game had a very nice interface and some funny acting, although it did
rather suffer from a lack of actors and complexity, though both of those are
things Foralltoplay could fix with a 100 K grant methinks!

Anyway, instead of wittering on here is the message:

Hello everyone! Chase & LinkedIn are offering 20 small companies $100,000
grants through a contest and we've entered our studio (For All To Play) into
the contest. We are currently forced to work on games in our spare time, but
if we receive this grant we will be able to develop accessible audio games
full-time! We need at least 250 votes to be considered for the grant and
would appreciate your vote.

You can vote for us on the following page:
https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/b/4861

For those not familiar with our studio, we are the developers behind Grail
to the Thief, an accessible audio game that was launched last year. If we
receive this grant, we will use player feedback from Grail to the Thief and
will work with you, the community, to develop bigger, better experiences.

Hi nicol.

Unfortunately due to an error that dropdown box isn't working. If you go to
the games list however you will find links to all the pages, alternatively
you could go to the search games link on the main page and display all games
by foralltoplay, or all audio adventure games.

The pages are still there, it's just that box which is broken, though
hopefully Sander will fix it soon.

Hi Sarah.

I had the same trouble, but according to the developer facebook is the only
method of voting, which is very silly, though the devs did suggest anyone
who hasn't got facebook could help spreading the word to those who have and
might wish to vote, friends and family etc.

I will say though, I did wonder given that facebook isn't exactly %100
screen reader friendly how many votes this will cost? tis a shame.

I still get the home page after clicking submit.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem entirely true there Dark. I just tried
looking up Grail both in the game list and by searching and it didn't
work. I eventually had to search the forum for the topic announcing its
release. I also couldn't access the DB page on the game, which was of
course linked to in said topic.

Hi nicol.

Unfortunately due to an error that dropdown box isn't working. If you go
to

the games list however you will find links to all the pages, alternatively
you could go to the search games link on the main page and display all
games

by foralltoplay, or all audio adventure games.

The pages are still there, it's just that box which is broken, though
hopefully Sander will fix it soon.

HI all
I would like to read up on grail to the thief.
I prefer the combo box on audiogames.net to read up on a game.
So I choose grail to the thief in the combo box and I click submit.
But I'm not taken to the page reviewing grail to the thief.
I still get the home page after clicking submit.
I've tried about 10 times.
I have internet explorer 11 and firefox 34.0.5
I have tried both.
Has anybody experienced this?
If so, what address should I use to report the problem.
Many thanks for any help
Bfn
Nicol

This was posted to audiogames.net today, and I definitely think this is an
occasion where people can help, sinse all that is required for an entire

For those who don't know, graille to the thief was an audio adventure game (not
a first person one, one of the choice style ones), developed by foralltoplay.

The game had a very nice interface and some funny acting, although it did
rather suffer from a lack of actors and complexity, though both of those are
things Foralltoplay could fix with a 100 K grant methinks!

Anyway, instead of wittering on here is the message:

Hello everyone! Chase & LinkedIn are offering 20 small companies $100,000
grants through a contest and we've entered our studio (For All To Play) into the
contest. We are currently forced to work on games in our spare time, but if we
receive this grant we will be able to develop accessible audio games full-time! We
need at least 250 votes to be considered for the grant and would appreciate your
vote.

You can vote for us on the following page:

For those not familiar with our studio, we are the developers behind Grail to
the Thief, an accessible audio game that was launched last year. If we receive
this grant, we will use player feedback from Grail to the Thief and will work
with you, the community, to develop bigger, better experiences.
