I don't want to add things like road courses and cross country type racing since it is not going to be that kind of game. You will be racing on tracks in a seasonal circuit like Nascar. Cheers. Obviously, it wouldn't be Nascar-like without 2 mile, half mile, and 1 mile oval tracks. However, I'm thinking the game could be more interesting if there were some unusual shaped tracks like s shapes, figure 8 tracks, and so on. What do you racers think? Also Nascar tracks tend to always move counter clockwise. Yet some games like Poll Position had clockwise movement as well. Any preference here? [Audyssey] Fw: [Blindad] New Accessible games
- Original Message - From: Amy Ruell [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2007 3:13 PM Subject: [Blindad] New Accessible games Hello all, Just wanted you to know about this company, with which I am familiar. Here is an article about them. If you want to learn about their accessible games, go to: www.7128.com. They're really nice people and have worked to ensure that as many of their games are accessible as possible. They consulted with the computer group over which I preside to make their games accessible. Partners in life, business 'Intentional family' forms video game company By Steven Rosenberg, Globe Staff | February 15, 2007 Shortly after 7 each morning, Eleanor Robinson puts on a pot of coffee in her kitchen and sits down and reads the newspaper with her husband, Earle. Within minutes, they're usually joined by John Bannick or David Brown or Cynthia Geller or Marcia Morrison. There is no one single surname on the doorbell of the 30-room Victorian house that overlooks the North River in Salem. No matter, say the six people who have lived together for much of the last 20 years. What we are is an intentional family, explained Geller, a Detroit -born actress and political fund-raiser. More than 20 years ago, before the Internet and the widespread use of personal computers and video games, the six met while playing the tabletop, fantasy role-playing game, Dungeons Dragons. By 1989, they were in the middle of what would become a 12-year Dungeons Dragons game, and the core players of the group decided that it made sense to buy a house together. Since then, they have moved from their original house in Somerville to Salem, endured the death of a founding member of their group, grown gray together, and, last month, launched 7-128 Software, at 7128.com. The company's name refers to seven people living together inside of Route 128 and counts John Bannick's wife, Barbara, a librarian and house member who died six years ago. The company sells puzzles and downloadable video games that contain no sexual or violent content and can also be played by those who are deaf and blind. The games, aimed at baby boomers and the senior gaming market, range from $5 to $10. They don't want violence or sex, Eleanor Robinson said of the gamers 7128.com hopes to attract. They want family-friendly games that they are perfectly content to play with their kids. To date, the group has produced about 60 games and is issuing a new release every Thursday. Most of the games are set among mansions in Newport, R.I., in the 1890s. When players need help in solving the games' mysteries, they click on an image of Inspector Cyndi (Geller), a Viennese police detective. Like Geller, all of the housemates have a role in creating the games. Bannick and Eleanor Robinson helped create the computer programs; Earle Robinson, a former Army officer, did the photography; Brown, a retired social worker, did the writing and research; and Morrison, a former rock 'n' roll singer, helped with the audio. After five years of planning and about 18 months of programming, filming, and storyboarding -- many of the stories were conceived over dinner or a couple of glasses of wine -- the business launched on Jan. 1. The group has relied on word-of-mouth advertising, sending e-mails about the website to their large coterie of fellow gamers, and so far, the six are satisfied with the response. We're already making money, said Eleanor Robinson, 72, a former teacher and Marine officer who lives on the second floor of the Salem house with her husband. The Robinson s, like the rest of their partners and housemates, say their business goal dovetails with the co-op's collective goals: We want to make enough money to pay our mortgage, said Eleanor Robinson. While they have separate apartments inside the house, the residents nearly always leave their doors open, attend group meals frequently, and pool their expenses, with some paying more according to net worth. While group members often travel together -- including a sojourn to London for a month -- they say one of the biggest benefits of living together is knowing that they won't die alone. As they age, caring for one another has become paramount for all of the house members. We don't want to be alone, basically, said Earle Robinson, who has been married to Eleanor for 49 years and has three children and eight grandchildren. It's a big, cold world out there if you're alone. It's easier to do things for other people than have things done for you. Several years ago, the group came together to support Bannick's wife when she was diagnosed with brain cancer. They'd feed her, dress her, and just be there and sit with her, Bannick said. Before she died, Barbara said, 'I feel like my family is taking care of me.' After Bannick's wife died, his 89-year-old mother, Marjorie,

is there a way to ask the people who copy writed the material to let you use it? - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2007 8:02 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Copyright issues was star wars sounds Hi Michael, For the record I do agree with you and Liam that great care and thought should be taken before using copyrighted material. However, we in the blind comunity are at a sad crossroads when we talk about accessible games. When I was sighted I played Star Wars Empire Strikes Back, Dark Forces and Dark Forces II, Rebel Assault I and II, Jedi Knight, and so on. Suddenly, I am blind and there are absolutely nowaccessible Star Wars games. What is the solution here? I can't simply go to Wal-mart and pick up the latest Star Wars titles even though I might want to with all my heart and desire. Sure there are other games out there, but I'd really like to play Star Wars. Well, I have the skills to write a game, but there is this thing called copyright issues like can't use the sounds, characters, or logos. Oops, friends all of us in the blind comunity are screwed again by the sighted comunity. I would love to be fair, and not use copyrighted material if I can avoid it. I doubt I will do much with copyrighted material, but the fact remains what do I do when I can not legally use Star Wars games and can not legally create one. Short answer is nothing, and frankly that downright sucks lemons. With games like Montezuma's Revenge Packman you are probably right no one really cares. There are hundreds of clones out there, and the copyright holders aren't saying much. Why do developers break copyright laws. I think short answer is they can't get an accessible game any other way but to use copyrighted sounds and logos. If you put any old laser sound in a Star Wars game it will sound terrible. The Star Wars effects are very unique and no matter how much a dev tries to emulate it it won't be the same without the authentic sounds. I'll get down from the soap box. michael feir wrote: I've never understood why some developers are so keen to needlessly break copyright laws and risk prosecution. When you're dealing with classic arcade games which have been cloned a million times over, I can certainly understand. It would surprise me tremendously if Pacman Talks or Dynaman incurred anybody's letigious wrath. I think there's a good argument to be made that making an accessible version of a classic game is certainly not robbing anybody of potential derived profits. When you're dealing with such specific licenses like Star Wars and such, it's a whole different story. People have been sued by Paramount for making Star Trek based games. I have no doubt that Lucas Arts is equally defensive of the Star Wars franchise. Also, taking sounds that are not only directly tied to a game as well as a major entertainment franchise substantially increases the risks of being taken to court. Certainly, there's the can't squeeze blood from a stone argument. Nobody producing accessible games has exactly struck gold. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Raceway, news, plans, and updates.
Hello Thomas, I don't post often, but I want to thank you for the update. I am an early purchaser, so the good news is very welcome. Gerry - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2006 5:30 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Raceway, news, plans, and updates. Hi gamers, Here is a quick informal update on what USA Games will be doing with USA Raceway. I know it has been a very long time since I have updated everyone on what is going on with this title. so I would like to take this time to fill everyone in. I'd like to caution gamers not to expect an early release date on this title. I'm still very much at the beginning of development on this product, and basicly redoing allot of work James North did simply as I felt I could do a better job on some aspects of the game, and not to mention Raceway will be using the .NET Framework version 2.0 since that is now what I am directly supporting. However, on the bright side of things earlier today I located several free racing effects of a pretty high quality. Not maybe as good as I could find from a professional vender of sound effects, but certainly good enough to jump start the game with some sounds, and will be great for testing, and so on. In addition to the new sounds I have now created a selection menu where you can select a driver, (character,) who you will be playing. None of the characters are actual drivers that I am aware of, but the names I picked are common American names and you might be a woman driver named Shelly Copeland, Amanda Erickson, Kelly Anderson, or you can be a guy driver like Tony Miller, Frank Mitchel, or Bryan Campbell. Like I said the names are common first and last names, and well sound like American Nascar drivers but aren't really. Cool huh? Another feature I added that wasn't in the Alchemy version I personally find cool is the ability to select the sponser who you will be driving for. You might be driving for Anheuser-Busch Beer, McDonald's, Pepsi Kola, Radio Shack, Good Year, Valvoline, and several others. After you select the driver who you will be and the sponsorship you will have Raceway will asign your car a number from 1 to 99. From that point you will be that driver, number, and have to drive for that sponsor for the entire racing season. Which brings me to the next bit of news. In the Alchemy version of Raceway the game was pretty much designed to play one race. The USA Raceway version is much different. You will actually be playing out an entire season on several different tracks in different States. An example of how this works is you go to the game start menu and select start new season. You will be walked through selecting a driver, a sponsor, and then the game will randomly pick a season schedule for you. Once that is done you will be asked to run a preseason race to practice your time, racing, whatever. If you finish the preseason race or skip it you will be sent to your first race on the schedule. Once you finish the race, win or lose, you will be taken back to the Raceway start menu where you can check your season standings, earnings, or continue the season. If you press exit game it will exit saving your place in the season. If you select continue season you will be sent to your next location on your schedule. Obviously, the guy who wins the race gets the prize money, cups, and well your goal is to become the USA Raceway Champion. Where are we now? Well, there is allot to go. I have to basicly write a physics engine that will hopefully emulate realistic driving physics. I'm also hoping to add in FF Racing Wheels, and of course I have to write all the racing tracks. I basicly have one strait road I have been using to test things with. In short a long ways to go, but I am making progress. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] STFC sad news.
I don't write often, but my sympathy goes out to you. Take a vacation. I recently lost a hard drive with everything on it. No backup. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2006 3:52 AM Subject: [Audyssey] STFC sad news. Hello gamers,Hello gamers, It is my deepest regret at this moment to announce some very sad and unhappy news about STFC which will put development of that title back by countless months. Even worse I know I am to blame for that setback do to my foolish complacency, and lack of backing up the code as often as I should have. For that mistake I am paying a huge price. So here is what happened. As you know in July I split STFC in to branches. I have the original source for 1.0 beta which is thankfully backed up to my USB backup drive, and then I was working on a STFC 2.0 with all the features I have announced in previous posts with dynamic menus, better sensors, updated enemy AI, etc... Anyway, I had taken my USB drive off my desktop to backup some stuff from my laptop, and never got around to hooking it up to my desktop computer. Since all the work on STFC 2.0 was being done on the desktop there was only one single copy of the source code. Well, while working on STFC 2.0 I was updating the Main.cs file when I discovered somehow when deleting some code I had deleted most of the file, and at some point had saved the file not knowing most of it's contents was deleted. As a result all of the enemy AI, dynamic menus, etc is gone. The code is simply destroyed, and there is no way to recover it. I can't even guess as to how long it will take to rewrite all that. No less than three months damage. Needless to say I am extremely upset from this crisis and now I can garentee that USB drive will be connected to my desktop almost perminitly from now on to backup every single update daily in hopes of preventing a similar crisis. However, you know as I know that will not solve the immediate issue. I have to decide where to go from here. All I can think of is make some miner patches for the STFC 1.0 beta, and forget about all the dynamic menus and stuff for now. I can not bring myself to rewrite all that stuff right now. It would be to stressful on me emotionally to try and recreate two or three months of code again if not more since it will all be from scratch this time. In fact, at this moment I am so stressed I would rather drop STFC completely for months until I can feel ready to take on that project. To say I feel miserable is the understatement of the century. I'll probably work on something else such as Montezuma's Revenge since that at least won't be as stressful to work on. Howling like a wounded Klingon: Thomas Ward ___ Gamers mailing list ..
