I have recently gone back to playing another role playing game with a big world and lots of quests that does a few things to make navigation easier. The next tool that we have access to is a reference to how to get to any important realm, town, or large city. This has a further benefit of assisting me to understand how the world is laid out as well as the obvious one of knowing where locations are on a day to day basis. The final thing that has been done is to make all dungeons on a grid using only the four cardinal directions. This is really useful because it allows people to make maps using Excel spreadsheets. As far as I know, maps can be made in MushZ however, there is no way to actua lly explore these maps like you can in Excel. I think having a list of quests and where to access them, a list of fame mobs and where you access them, and directions to places in the Alter Aeon world would be incredibly useful! Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon and finding things
Hi Jeremy, See comments in-line. Grace, As to players not giving out info, that's possible, though it doesn't seem to be nearly as common as it once was. However, I'll freely admit, I like to encourage people to explore myself. However, that said, there's a number of ways to handle your navigation issues 1. One friend of mine writes down notes about where he is whenever he accepts a quest and what the text of the quest is so he knows where to go back. Having to make and then scroll through heaps of notes can be very time consuming. If more comprehensive information were provided this would not be necisary. 2. Alter does have a coordinate system. While i'ts not super useful for every situation, it can give general ideas of where areas are. If a quest gives a location you think you recognize, looking in the area list for that area name and is coordinates can at least give a general direction. Not all areas are findable via this method. Also coordinates will give you a very very general idea and you may just end up wandering around in circles chasing your tail. 3. Asking people where a specific mob or town is usually gets results or at least a general direction. I'd say you get useful results about half the time. Otherwise you get people telling you that you should explore which is very disheartening if that is what you have been doing for the past half hour. Telling someone to explore is not providing helpful information. The less condescending thing to do is to not say anything at all. 4. You can map A.A. on excel, but you just have to take into account that room sizes vary a lot. A far better way that I found was to use a series of directions (something like the speed walk instructions on aardwolf) but include landmarks. So something like this go all west from Ralnoth until you encounter a biomantically enhanced tree, go around the tree to the north or south and get back on an east west line til you see a lamp post. Then go south and trend west til you're on a fading road. Go all west then north then one east and you're 1 room south of the green dragon. The directions above would be exactly the type of instructions required in a tool giving directions between areas on Alter. These directions would not work in an explorable dungion which is where being able to create maps would be useful. Landmarks, the nearby command, the various map commands map -old, map -explored, map -blind, all help as does the coordinate system. No one of them is perfect, but combined they can make a powerful set of ways to find places again. Having a few simplified tools for navigating would provide a much more streamlined less frustrating user experience. Lastly, you can if you have people who are interested in it form direction maps to areas. My clan actually did this, then the mud map changed significantly. We started again, and while it's an ongoing and frustrating process (the map keeps changing)) it does help. This is the issue with the clan system. Information is kept within a small group of people and not shared with the wider community. I hope that helps, Jeremy --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Alteraeon and a suggestion, legacy characters
Hi, That is actually a really great idea! I really like the structured way that quests work in sloe but am having issues figuring out where exactly to progress once getting to the mainland. It's too bad that there is less structure on the main land as I would guess that I am not the only one overwhelmed by figuring out where to go and what to do next. Regards, Grace On 29/06/2015 7:29 PM, dark wrote: Hi. I haven't played Alteraeon in a while, and it's not because I have anything against the game, it's because with the clerric reshuffle and massive changes I'm not sure where to start or what to do with Thelok, my clerric warrior. I did consider starting a new character, particularly to perhaps try a different job like primary necro or druid, however I don't want to lose the good few hours work I have put into getting Thelok through all his levels and quests and I don't want to abandon Thelok and all of that. I was having a think about this problem and an idea occurred to me regarding secondary characters. Namely, using the Alteraeon account system for legacy characters. Suppose when you reach level 30 and get to Ralnoth city, you have the option of creating a son or daughter for your current character. When you create a child character, that character starts off on Slo at level one and you can play her or him and progress as normal choosing whatever classes you like. When that character reaches level 30 and also gets to Ralnoth you can go to see your characters father and mother and then have a choice. Either you can continue with that character, whereupon the child and the parent are both now two characters the player can play in the game, or, you can have the child "recount their adventures and settle down" This means your child character tells their parent all about the adventures they've had, but then decides the adventuring life isn't for them and goes off to do a more standard job. If you choose this option, you effectively perminantly kill the child character, however because the child has told their parent all about their adventures, they impart a certain proportion of their accumulated xp to their parent, perhaps half. This system has several advantages. It would mean that players who'd already progressed in the game could try out other class combinations and yet not abandon their old faithful characters completely, it would also mean that both new and old players could bennifit from changes to Slo, Kordon and Arcase. Also thematically, it would use the account system for a rather fun purpose, (you could stick in details of your original characters' npc spouses and/or home in ralnoth for kicks). If people (especially dentin), don't like this idea, fare enough, however it is something that has always occurred to me in long running online games, that sometimes it'd be nice to go back but I don't necessarily want to let my old characters go. All the best, Dark. There is always more to know, more to see, more to learn. The world is vast and wondrous strange and there are more things benieth the stars than even the archmaesters of the citadel can dream. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Sryth old cathedral
Hi, S P O I L E R This map is a 7 by seven map. All you need to do is go around the perimeter of the first level. When you find any passage that branches off from the perimeter, simply follow the passage, and fight the enemy at the end. There are four such passages, so you just find them, as you go around. When you've found the fourth enemy which is the skeletal arch priest, a hatch will be opened at location 6-7. Go down stairs, follow the passage, and you'll get to the last room. Re: [Audyssey] sryth jaws short keys
I do a couple of things to make my game playing quicker. If you use the letter B for buttons you can move between buttons quickly. In some adventures, I will place a bookmark on a certain part of the page, for instance I placed one at move to the center of the clearing for the statues quest. You can do this by pressing control shift K and adding one in the place you desire. To get back to it press K. Finally hitting F3 and using the find command is great for long lists of things.
