[Audyssey] Some thoughts about sound RTS

2007-07-25 Thread Quinten Pendle
Hello all

I eventually got round to taking time to discover this game, and, it's
great.
I noticed in the tutorial by Che that other sounds were used, and I no
discussions in this regard took place on list a few days ago, although
at the time I didn't take notice, because I simply didn't regard it as
important.
However, could someone please tell me where to get hold of the newer
sound pack for RTS?
Thanks for any help, and, great tutorial Che, this certainly got me
hooked!
Regards

Hi all.

Does anyone know if there's any audio review of judgement day or a
walkthrough of the game.

Another question do you need to beat the computer at level 1 to unlock
the bonuses and trophies.

Thanks from john.

Re: [Audyssey] PB Games, Coincidence or not?

2007-06-10 Thread Quinten Pendle
Hi again all

The interview with Philip Bennefall will be broadcast tomorrow, from
17:00 to 19:00 Eastern Standard Time, or 21:00 to 23:00 GMT.
To listen, log on to www.kool360.com, and select either broadband, or
dialup, depending on your connection speed.
The interview will be repeated on Friday, 15 June, from 13:00 to 15:00
Eastern Standard Time, or from 17:00 to 19:00 GMT.
I honestly don't know what time it will be in the Pacific time zone.
I have not yet considered the option of archiving the interview, but I
might do it after Friday's show, for a limited period, in which case a
download link for the interview will be posted here.

true.
That game is good but its probably better played with sighted help, I

control the train manually once going. One thing I want lifted on the

Re: [Audyssey] train sym

2007-04-19 Thread Quinten Pendle
Hi again all

On the score of Train sims, there is a freeware train simulator available,
called BVE (Boso View Express).
It is not fully accessible of course, you can pick routes, and then trains
to drive on the routes; you can drive and control most of the trains and
such, but there's not really an indication of when you are at a station or
at a red signal, or when passengers need to be picked up etc. etc.
Having said that, I've never tried to use this game with JFW and the Jaws
curser. Maybe that might also work, although I doubt it.

You can download the simulator from the following website:

http://mackoy.cool.ne.jp/index4.html

Just a few notes:
When you downloaded the program, you need to download and install all the
routes and trains, and in some instances, consists as well.
A few useful sites to obtain these from, are:

www.railsimroutes.co.uk
www.trainsimcentral.co.uk
www.train-sim.com
www.uktrainsim.com

I have also produced 1 or 2 add ons for this train sim.

Re: [Audyssey] BVE train simulator

2007-04-19 Thread Quinten Pendle
Hi there

As I've said earlier, the program is partially accessible with you being
allowed to control the trains, etc.
I agree it could be pointless to just drive around the tracks, unless of
course if you happen to pick a challenging route that has lots of curves,
ups and downs, a steam loco with a heavy load.
The challenge lies therein that you have to prevent the loco from coming to
a complete halt on an uphill part and not sliding back down again.
Or on a downhill part, it could be a challenge to keep your train under
control and not allow it to run away beyond control.
To achieve that you have to manipulate the engine's pressure, steam, and
other controls so that it has enough power built up to get over.
A perfect balance between enough steam on the one hand, and pressure on the
other, needs to be maintained.

As for the English, I haven't updated my version of BE for almost 2 years
now.
The site is Japanese, but if you download the available version, I am sure
there will b be some English to help you get along.
There's always the other sites I mentioned in my previous posting, with lots
and lots of resources, tips, hints, etc.

Hi Quintin,

I'm just wondering, if you don't know how to or you can't stop at the
stations on train rutes, how can we play this? I mean, all we do is
drive around the track, not stopping to pick people up? in my oppinion
that's just rood but ... yeah anyway think it makes you stop at stations
anyway, so how do we as blind people do it?

Also, how do I get the english version of this game?

Thanks.

none of the other controls work? No, not accessible at all--unless you just

load up the game to hear the sound of a train taking off
--in which case, just load a wave file.

Hi,

Audio Game Maker will come with a limited library of sound files, that
you
can use to build your first games with. However, the goal is for people
to
create their own games, and that includes their own sounds. Which is not
a
problem, in my opinion.

 hi
You get a wide variety of games. Each game needs its own sounds. And
 this
 is
where the problem lies: if audio game maker is for free, you need to
spend
 a
lot of money because you need sounds for the games you create so you
need
 to
 buy sound libraries.
 Sound libraries do cost money!
Or does the developers of audio game maker supply people with sound

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Audio Game Maker - Sneak Peek

 Hi David,

I'll try to answer that question the best I can:

Every game that is created with Audio Game Maker consists of multiple
 files:
a standard Audio Game Player.exe, some standard library files, an XML
file
that contains all the data of the game, and four folders that contain
all
the sound files that are used in the game. To distribute a game, you
 simply
share these files with someone else (simply .zip them up and send 'm).

 That
person does not need to have Audio Game Maker, as all games are
 stand-alone.
However, when someone receives a game from somebody else and puts the
 files
in the Audio Game Maker folder, that person is able to open the .XML
game
file using Audio Game Maker. This means that when you create a game
with
Audio Game Maker and distribute it (either for free, money, goats,
Linden
dollars or MySpace kudos) others can access your game file later on,
edit
it, change the soundfiles, and distribute it themselves for even more
 goats
 or red paperclips.

Therefore I hope you see that once you sell one game and it's out on
the Net, others can easily modify it. I personally don't have anything

against you selling a game you made with Audio Game Maker (you have
every right to ask for compensation for your hard work), but with how
Audio Game Maker works, you probably won't make that much money.
Although, I might add, I hereby dare the community to come up with
your own economic system if you want ;) Like a donation system, or a
ransom marketing system (you create a game but not yet release it,
advertise it, and when you receives enough money in donations, you
release the game for free), etc. etc.. I dare you all, folks ...
 (smile) ...

The goals of the Audio Game Maker project are:

 1) to increase the amount of audio games
 2) give visually impaired wanna-be game designers a chance to develop
 their
own audio games with a (simple) what you hear is what you get- kind
of
tool (at least something simpler than C++)

I am personally very interested in point 1, since more games means
more examples added to the discourse means more knowledge on audio
game design and more examples of accessible game design for the
 general game industry.

For us there is no financial gain in this whole project. We decided
for a non-protected format for the games for several reasons. One
was that it is quite hard (given the short amount of time in which
 Audio Game Maker is
conceived) to create a tool with which one can create games that are
copy-protected/piracy safe. The other was that we would like to create

a community of people all developing audio games, sharing their ideas
and games with each other, teaming up to build larger games together.
We were thinking along the lines of this: let's say that there are a
few people out there who want to build a Pong-type of game. With Audio

Game Maker, once someone has finished a Pong game, others can use that

game to create their own version, convert it into an Arkenoid type of
 game, etc.

Many of you are currently into modding existing audio games. Think of
this as not only being able to change each others sound files, but
also take a game and make it your own. This is something that has been

 going

Hi Robin,
In the future posts like this should probably go over to the
agdev-newbies list where we discuss such issues like this more in depth.
However, since I am writing this email anyway. I will answer as many
questions as I can, and I have a few questions of my own.

/Snip
I'd like to learn how to write programs and games in VB.
End Snip

Is there any special reason you decided to go for Visual Basic rather
than say C#, called C-Sharp.
I highly recommend going with C-Sharp over VB for the primary reason
many things are better documented and supported. One of these important
areas in particular to you will be DirectX. While you can use MS
DirectX in VB games Microsoft does not officially support it, and do not

provide code samples, instructions, etc on writing games in VB .NET
2005.

Snip
  1. Is it possible to write good games in VB?
End Snip

Yes, but you will find that good and reliable documentation for newbies
is extremely lacking. Visual Basic became famous among amature and rapid

application developers during the 90's but it's popularity is on the
decline. Most of the VB croud have switched to C-Sharp.
Just some historical background when DirectX 7 and 8 came out Microsoft
unvailed it with VB 6.0 examples etc and offered newbies a simple basic
language with a good set of multimedia libraries for developing games
and other amature home wrote applications.
In 2001 Microsoft converted all there Visual Studio languages to the
.NET Framework furthering increasing the power of the languages as well
as a universal development platform, and unvailed a new rapid
development language C#, called C-Sharp, which had many improvements
over VB, used C++ style coding conventions, reused allot of concepts
from Java, and became a very new and innovative language. Now, it is
rising in popularity, and in some areas has passed up VB in popularity
among amature programmers.
In 2003 when Microsoft DirectX 9.0 was unvailed to the world the
documentation was for C++ and C-Sharp users, and VB devs were left in
the cold documentation and support wise.
Since I know both C-Sharp and VB as well as DirectX I know I could get
DirectX up and running in no time in VB, but for a newby I don't see
that happening without good samples and training.

Snip
  2. Where can I find the toolbox?
End Snip

Press control+w then press the letter x. Your screen reader should land
you on the toolbox area of the screen. Keep in mind there is two columns

in the toolbox window. There is one side which sets the type of tools
you wish to view, and the other side is the actual tools themselves. For

your first experience with this I would say arrow up to have it show all

tools, and then you can tab in to the tools and view the entire list.
Obviously, later on you may want to customise your view as there are
only certain types of tools you need for certain projects.

Snip
  3. Is it a good idea to create a webbrowser at first?
End Snip

No. Any seasoned developer will tell you that you need to start out
extremely basic. For example my very very first program I wrote as a
student was a text program which did nothing more than display my name
on the screen. Some use hello world, your name, or whatever but the idea

is to get you use to structures of programming, understanding functions,

variables, data types, etc. Unless you know the basic termonology and
use for things in a program you can not begin to write one.
So first advice keep it simple stupid. Your first batch of programs are
going to be lame, boring, throw away, projects, but worth the practice.

Snip
  3. Where can I find a good VB tutorial that explains all or at least
most of all the features and how to use them?
End Snip

Well, I am very fond of recommending
http://safari.oreilly.com
which has books on just about any programming topic you can research for

$20.00 US monthly.
if you are going to do VB I suggest reading something like VB .NET In a

Nutshell by O'reilly and Associates.

Snip
  4. Is there someone here who can program in VB and who could give me
 some lessons? Thanks for
End Snip

I know enough of VB .NET to get you started in designing games, but
unfortunately I have a rather tight schedule aready and can't take on a
student at this point in my life other than ocational pointers such as
this email from time to time.

Re: [Audyssey] the unfortune regarding accessible games and mainstreamgames

2006-09-29 Thread Quinten Pendle
Hi Nicol

You have to remember though, that there's a difference between main
stream games for the pc and play station, and other platforms such as
the one you mentioned.
If you look at a popular main stream game such as Flight Simulator, you
will notice that it is actually much more expensive than the normal
accessible games.
Last I heard, (and I may be corrected), Flight Simulator e.g., costs in
access of R700-1200, roughly $100-$150, if my maths isn't buggered up
this early in the morning.
Trainz, a game from Auran, which is also a popular main stream game,
retails at roughly $69, which is about R520.
That's about double the price of a normal accessible game.

So to try and compare accessible games with the Nintendo platform, (mind
my spelling), is in my view, a bit unfair.

Just log on to www.kalahari.net and search under the games section.
You'll be shocked to see what main stream games (for the pc and play
station) actually sell for.
Then I'm sure you will realise that accessible games isn't that
expensive.

HI all

I would like to give my 2 sense regarding something I noticed with main
stream games. I'm not sure if this is the same as Nintendo. For you guys
who first had sight, have you also played these tv games? It's a
cartridge with 60 games on it which you connect to your standard tv;
it's a whole procedure to configure it, because you need an extra
channel for it. Anyway when I was a child, my mom bought me a cartridge
with 60 games on it. I played these games with the help of my sighted
friends. My mom paid r100 for the whole cartridge. ON there is games
like pack man, Mario brothers, etc. It's a pitty that accessible games
costs more than mainstream games on a cartridge. . Oh sorry, I forgot
to say, r100 south African money is equal to 12 dollars. So for 12
dollars you get 60 main stream games, some of them are small games and
some are multi level games. The obvious reason why accessible games is
not that cheap is because it needs more sounds. The difference between
accessible and mainstream games is that accessible games uses sounds
instead of graphics, so that is why accessible games costs more. I
know of many sighted kids who exchange cartridges with games between
them for free. It's a pitty accessible games is not that popular. I
mean a kid would go to his friend's house and give him a cartridge with
newer games for free. If only accessible games were that cheep so that
60 accessible games could fit onto a cartridge and plugged into the
computer and we only had to pay 12 dollars for it but the sounds it uses
is much larger than sighted games.

I'm just trying to discuss my point of view regarding main stream
games.

Hey Ari and all
I've also recently discovered the Battrick thingie.
At present I hired 5 batting, 5 bowling, 1 fitness, 1 fielding, (can't
remember the rest), coaches.
I don't think it's too effective, but what the heck.
My team is Western Transvaal, also from South Africa, if anyone's

Hi everyone,
I've made a very bad mistake with coaching in Battrick. You don't have 5
of each type of coach, I did some experimenting and see that you have 10
training sessions. Of those sessions, you hire coaches from batting,
bowling, fielding, keeping, and fitness to fill these. Example, 3
batting, 3 bowling, 1 fitness, 1 keeping, and two fielding would make
your 10 sessions. Your sessions would then be 3 bowling, 3 batting, etc.
If you hire more than ten, those coaches just waste money (I wasted so
much
resource!) So, again, if I were to hire 10 fitness coaches and no
others, all my 10 sessions would be just fitness, or 9 fitness and 1
bowling, the same. The new Battrick season starts on September 10, and
it's going to now also have three day matches! Simon, I've found your
team and have challenged you, so I think you have to go to your pavilion
page to accept so we'll have a friendly. Kevin, I haven't found your
team yet, is it more than one word and is it called It's not cricket?
I'll look, but in case I don't find it by search, in what region of
England are you? If you want to have a friendly against me, my team is
called Uninspiring Batting, and it's in the Gauteng region of South
Africa. Ari
