Re: [Audyssey] Apple Chess was Screen reader for MAC

2008-01-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Cara,
Yeah, I have to agree Winboard isn't a very good chess board. I'm
interested to hear Apple Chess in action, and maybe someday someone will
demo it on Blind Cool Tech. For us Windows users, AKA losers, Elite
Chess is the best it gets.

2008-01-01 Thread Cara Quinn
Hey Tom, (35 hours awake, and counting!) lol! and no, no alters
here, or at least not right now! lol!

Anyway, yeah, I tried to clear that up. I made a lil typo where Elite
got inserted before my note. -annoying to be sure, and very sorry, as
it would be annoying to try to read / understand as well!...

what I'd meant to say is that I love Mac Chess and have never
played Elite chess, however I HAVE played a version of chess in
windows which I believe was called WinBoard with JFW which I didn't
like as much as Chess on the Mac.

And no, this mess didn't happen because of partying too hard,
(just a good ole' typographical quandary!) but I sure did
have fun!!!woohoo!

So anyway, I hope this clears that all up and I'll be heading off
to the great beyond soon and dreaming of fun and wonderful things!

Have a lovely evening and I hope your new year's celebrations were
joyous to say the least!...

Smiles,

Cara :)

Hi,
Yeah. If I remember correctly Zoom is multiplatform. I've heard about it
on a Linux list, and everyone has said basically the same thing that
zoom is better than WinFrotz by a mile.

Re: [Audyssey] Apple Chess was Screen reader for MAC

2008-01-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil,
Actually, Mac OS Leopard is Apple's current operating system, but as far
as I am aware Apple Chess is the only built in game for Mac currently.
Accessible gaming on Mac's is still very much in its infancy yet.
I know that Apple Chess, several web based games using the Safari web
browser, and some text adventures are what makes up the Mac OS accesible
gaming options right now.Oh, and I can't forget Sound RTS and 7128's games.
I think though as accessible developers begin to migrate to Mac or
perhaps get a Mac system as a secondary computer that number will grow
eventually. Mac has a huge potential to take off now that VoiceOver is a
core part of the operating system, built in from the get-go, and is
every bit as functional as Jaws or Window Eyes.
I'm one of the developers who is actually thinking of getting a MacBook
at some point in the future. I already have a laptop running Vista and a
MacBook as well would expand my options quite a bit. If I get one I will
certainly begin porting my games to Mac asap.

Some new Macs come bundled with board game software from another
company, not Apple, which are not accessible. The accessible game
pickings for Mac are scarce at present, but I will say that the
interactive fiction interpreter called Zoom for Mac, which runs
Infocom, ZMachine, Tads, and a few other formats is the best and most
accessible interpreter I've ever used.

Re: [Audyssey] Apple Chess was Screen reader for MAC

Apple Chess is very very good. I haven't played Elite Chess, so can't
make a direct comparison, but it is entirely accessible across the
board, so to speak, and I've spent many happy hours playing it. You
can examine the board as you would expect with arrows, and you can set
the game up to automatically announce the moves it makes as it does.
There are a few Chess variations also available with it. If you want
to sit down and play a good game of chess, it doesn't get much better.
