[Audyssey] Updated Vista Compatibility Chart.
Vista Game Compatibility Chart 6/29/2007 Introduction Before you read the chart below I feel it necessary to point out a few things. First, to get most of these games to operate properly under Windows Vista you must have a recent copy of the Microsoft dx7vb.dll and dx8vb.dll files. These files can be found on any Windows XP system located in the c:\windows\system32 directory. They do not ship with Windows Vista so must be manually copied from a Windows XP computer to the new Windows Vista computer, and placed in Vista's c:\windows\system32 directory. Some games such as Sarah will install these files for you, but in most cases there is no other way to obtain these necessary files other than to copy them from a Windows XP computer to your Windows Vista computer. Second, some games such as Rail Racer require the very latest DirectX updates from http://www.microsoft.com/directx and the .Net framework to run. So be sure to have the required system requirements installed. Finally, I do mention some games require full administration rights to install. To do this arrow to the games installation file, press the Windows context menu key, arrow to run as administrator, and press enter. This will allow you to install the game as administrator. Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart
Hi Josh and all, Speaking from network admin experience running as administrator is just not plane safe or computer secure. When you run administrator anything you download or run under XP has full system wide access potentially leaving viruses, spyware, and other malware free reign to do what it wants. General computer safe practice is to have one admin account for software installs, system wide changes like changing services, and at least one standard user account for day to day use for internet, email, office, etc. I would strongly urge you in the strongest manner possible to move your data to a non admin account, and use admin for only system upgrades and other changes you can only make as admin. A thing everyone here needs to understand when new admins take any networking course on Windows server or Linux server etc network admin 101 is never run as admin unless absolutely necessary. This fact is something that has not caught on well with the general public, and the reason viruses and worms have been allowed to run rampent. Windows 98 etc were not secure operating environments, and even when the os, Windows XP, etc became more so end users didn't have the know-how or desire to make XP more secure. Now, days I think Microsoft is now realising what Linux developers knew all along is that most general users need to be forced to use a secure operating environment out of the box. Ubuntu Linux, for example, has the admin account disabled by default. If you want to do anything you must run the app via sudo and your super user password. Either that or modify the script files where the root admin account is disabled for full admin rights. Bottom line weather we are talking Windows Vista, Ubuntu Linux 6.10, FreeBSD, etc the authors of such software are really making the entire operating environment secure, some might think draconian, but most users just don't know how to create a more secure operating environment unless it is handed to them out of the box. I've heard more than one user here on this list say I just run XP as admin, and that is the largest problem with internet security today. Not running the operating system as it was intended to be run with most rights disabled unless required as in installs and major changes. Josh wrote: yes, I wanted to know that also. As far as I know on my xp machine and on my wife's machine ours is always running in administrator mode. Josh ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart
Hi Damien, Good question. There isn't a admin account as in the old days. There is some users that are added to an admin group which can perform admin changes, but he/she must launch them from a pull down menu in some cases, or confirm it in a admin dialog that pops up. For example, with Jim Kitchen's games to modify the contents of the program files directory I have to arrow to the extracting zip file, press context key, and run as administrator before launching that file. Otherwise Vista will come back with a permission denied error. This was somethinhg i did not know the first time I tried Jim's Games, but since then I am getting a feel for Vista and how to get passed these annoyences simply by knowing where to access the admin rights. There is a book on Safari on Vista network admin, and one for end users I want to get as soon as it is out of rough cuts. It should give me a good look inside how to do allot more with the os. damien c. sadler - head of x-sight interactive wrote: does it have to be the main administrator, or can it be a user with administrative privileges regards, damien ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart
Hi Josh, That is a given. Any network admin, programmer, etc can tell you there isn't a realistic way to make an operating system 100% safe and secure. However, that doesn't mean we don't try, and not use security because there is no way to fully have a secure operating environment. For example, a 10% chanse of being hacked looks allot better than a 50% of being hacked. At some point without security inplace especially strong security you are playing rush and rulet with a loaded gun. Why do we have antivirus programs? To hopefully secure ourselves from the majority of viruses. Why do we have firewalls? To close ports, and protect ourselves from incoming and outgoing traffic that would be harmful to the os. Why do we use SSL, secure socket layer, when transfering billing info over the internet? To hopefully, keep hackers from cracking the data stream and obtaining credit card numbers, addresses, phone numbers, etc of the customer. Bottom line, each layer of security makes that 50% chanse smaller and smaller. You might start at 50% of being hacked go to 40%, 30%, 20%, 10%, etc... It won't be 100%, secure and safe but you might be very close to it. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart
NOthing is secure josh, if it were, then no access if to secure. However as long as we have systems people will find ways to get into these things. Myself I just use xp as it is. Maybe when I get vista people will have modified their programs, ie readers, and other things that require admin rights to tell the user that they need rights or even better still intercept the errors and bring up dialogs. Just like any system there will be probably a workaround for those of us lazy enough to bother about it. [Audyssey] Updated Vista compatibility chart
Hello all, Here is an update to my game compatibility chart I posted earlier this week. In the prier chart I had reported some games as failed the test. I have since then found work arounds and solutions for them.Which I will state here. This is likely to be a much happier report than last time. BSC Games No updates. GMA Games Trek 2000 Status: Passed Issues: No issues Kitchens Inc Monopoly, NFL, Life, etc... Status: Passed Issues: Must be installed by using the run as administrator option. Solution: Arrow to filename.exe, use the Windows context key, arrow to run as Administrator, and press enter. The self-extraction process will work as normal. USA Games Monty, Raceway, etc... Issues: Incompatible DirectX versions. Solution: upgrade to the Feb 4, 2007 DirectX release. Notes: Monty and Raceway will now be linked against Feb 4, 2007 DirectX, and earlier versions of DirectX are not supported by Monty and Raceway. ___ Gamers mailing list ..
