Re: [Audyssey] question for Jim Kitchen - Re: New here; saying hello

2010-11-04 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Charles,

Yeah, waver is just a simple little wave file player program. You could put a
copy of it in any folder with wave files. One thing that I like about the
program is that you can pick and play a series of wave files.

The function keys are

F1. say special keys
F2. search
F3. search next
F4. spell file name
F5. go to replay
F6. go to play
F7. test play
F8. play all (with specified name or part of name)
F9. play random files
F12. change voice

control key. change rate of speech
escape key. go to exit

HTH

And the reader program is just a simple text file reader that uses sapi5 speech.

Thanks, glad that you are having fun with my waver program.

I wrote the program for when I was editing wav files for my games. I
wanted to hear how they would sound when played with DirectX like my games
would. Which can be a bit different than with say Gold Wave or Windows
Media Player. Then just though that I would throw it in with Monopoly.

BTW you can put a copy of the waver.exe program file in any folder that

Hi Jim,
No, DirectSound can't but I believe DirectShow can. The thing to keep
in mind with mp3 files instead of loading them like a game *.wav file
you should stream them. DirectSound doesn't really have that kind of
support. What I'd do if I were you is use FMOD Ex 4.28 which is a com
library, and can easily be included in Visual Basic 6 apps. In fact, I
just checked and theFMOD 4.28 SDK has a PlayStream example written in
Visual Basic 6 for developers who want to play mp3s, oggs, etc as
sound streams.

Cheers!

a priority for me. As I said to Charles, Windows Media Player does a
pretty nice job for lots of the sound file formats.

I have a folder full of music, my game sounds, adult sound files etc etc
and I just have them played randomly. Like on Friday night or whatever.
Did the same thing on my Book Sense XT.

Thanks, glad that you are having fun with my waver program.

I wrote the program for when I was editing wav files for my games. I wanted to

can be a bit different than with say Gold Wave or Windows Media Player. Then

Hi Charles,

The waver program is a small simple wave file player program.

Here are what the function keys do.

  f 1. say special keys. f 2. search. f 3 search next. f 4. spell file
name. f 5. go to replay. f 6. go to play. f 7. test play. f 8. play all. f
9. play random files. f 12. change voice. control key adjust rate of
speech. escape key go to exit.
The waver program also works like the Kitchensinc game menu program in
that you can start typing in the name of a file or just use the arrow keys
to move through the list of files.

BTW you can put a copy of the waver.exe program file in any folder that
has wave (.wav) files.

Re: [Audyssey] question for jim kitchen

2010-03-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Liam,
That's for sure. The licensing is the one issue I haven't figured out
yet. As much as I like FMOD it has a pretty heavy licensing fee for
commercial games. Especially for games $30 and up which requires a
royalty license. Those are very expensive, but that kind of fee is a
one time fee, but if I go with a shareware license I have to sell my
games for like $10 to $15 but only get charged $100 for the license.
Personally, that is a bit of a raw deal for us.
What we will likely end up doing before final release is switch the
engine over to Streamway which also has a lot of nice features, as you
know yourself, and Philip doesn't charge that much for the license
either. So do to the cost of licensing FMOD, like it or not, I'm
probably going to have to settle for a cheaper alternative before 1.0
goes on sale.

Cheers!

Hi,
Yep. Sure could if Jim was willing to rewrite waver to use something like
FMOD instead of DirectSound 8. Not only could it play mp3s, but it could be
turned into a media player that supports wav, flak, mp3, wma, ogg, etc just
by converting it over to that library. Over the past couple of months I've
fallen in love with FMOD for that reason, and personally think it blows
DirectSound and XAudio away on a feature by feature comparison. That's why
the upgraded Genesis Engine now uses it for audio support.

Hi Jim,
No, DirectSound can't but I believe DirectShow can.

Hi Hayden,
Hmmm...I don't know about that, but there are several possabilities as
far as creating a VB 6 program that plays mp3s. One way is to use the
Windows DirectShow com library which has all kinds of video and audio
codecs support for multimedia. Another would be to use FMOD Ex, which
also has com support, and use it to play mp3s, ogg, wav, and just
about anything else you can think of. I think Windows media Player's
libraries are also com components so you could in theory write a
simple VB 6 wrapper around that if you needed to. Like I said there
are lots of possabilities here. I love Windows com support for tht
reason. Just grab the library or component and run with it.

Cheers!

Hi Charles,

The waver program is a small simple wave file player program.

Here are what the function keys do.

  f 1. say special keys. f 2. search. f 3 search next. f 4. spell file
name. f 5. go to replay. f 6. go to play. f 7. test play. f 8. play all. f
9. play random files. f 12. change voice. control key adjust rate of
speech. escape key go to exit.
The waver program also works like the Kitchensinc game menu program in
that you can start typing in the name of a file or just use the arrow keys
to move through the list of files.

BTW you can put a copy of the waver.exe program file in any folder that
has wave (.wav) files.

Hi Thomas,

Unfortunately DirectX 8.1 does not support Mp3 files. Not that I have ever
been able to figure out anyway. I mean it will start to play them, but does
not play the entire file.

BTW Waver can do more than just play the kitchensinc wave files randomly.

Here are what the function keys do.

  f 1. say special keys.
f 2. search.
f 3 search next.
f 4. spell file name.

f 9. play random files.
f 12. change voice.
control key adjust rate of speech.
escape key go to exit.

And you can put a copy of the waver.exe program file in any folder that has
wave (.wav) files.

Hi Charles,
Waver is a simple wav player program Jim Kitchen created that randomly
selects and plays wav files in the Kitchensinc directory. A bit of a
strange program, but kind of fun to listen to once and a while. Too
bad he didn't make a version for playing mp3s.

I plan to stick with VB6 for creating my games. I have been writing

Hi Jim
I enjoy your Simon, but I would please like to know if you could do these
suggestions if it can be done without too much trouble.
1. Can you make it so that a person can start from the round from where you
failed, or that you can set from which number of objects to remember to
begin? Example, if I fail on round 10, can I start again from round 10?
2. Some people prefer to play memory to see how much they can remember
without a time limit, rather trying to concentrate on remembering as much as
they can without the pressure of time. Could there be an option to turn time
limits on and off?

Thanks

Hi,
Well, Sorry would be a pretty easy game to make. All you need is the
cards four sets of colored pons and the game board.

Re: [Audyssey] question for jim

2008-02-29 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Jeremy,

Sorry is similar to Headache and Parcheesi isn't it? I played all of those
games as a kid and would very much like to make computer versions. Clue would
be another board game that I would like on the computer, but I haven't been
able to figure out a good way to review the board for any of those games. It's
kind of like chess. I don't play computer chess. I like to be able to put my
hands on a board so that I can get a good picture of the board. I think that
it just takes too long to do it on the computer moving around the entire board
with the arrow keys.
