Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons Dragons for the blind
Hi Charles, Not for DND. The standard DND dice have numbers on them instead of holes or dots which makes them difficult to feel. Plus the 10 sided and 20 sided dice makes them hard to properly label given the unique shape of the die. So I don't think using standard RPG die in this case would work given they are not your standard 6 sided die with holes that can be easily felt. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons Dragons for the blind
Not really - think the two most commonly used dice types/sizes in certain types of role playing games are 10-sided, or 20-sided - so, unless they're way bigger than standard, you won't be able to feel the numbers inscribed into the sides of the dice, since they're printed/engraved a little bit too small to feel all that easily...smile I generally use a dice app on my laptop, or else, there's also a RPG dive roller bit of software for the android phone operating system that's usable/accessible enough, but anyway. Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons Dragons for the blind
If you mean tabletop role-playing games, I find just about all of them accessible. You buy a set of rules, almost always in a PDF file. You create a character, and then sit at a table with your friends and play. An accessible dice roller like GMA Dice lets you make your dice rolls, and a laptop or Braille notetaker lets you have access to your character sheet and the rules. These different RPGs can create play in genres ranging from high fantasy to cyberpunk, and all sorts of things in between. If you're talking about DD style computer games, I don't know many of these that talk. Entombed is vaguely DD like, and it was fun to play, but I believe the developer hasn't done anything with that game in years. I could be wrong about that, though. -Original Message- From: Gamers [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Jacob Kruger Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 3:10 AM To: Tyler; Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons Dragons for the blind I play the real table top version of a flavour called rune quest with some sighted friends, and I just use a text file, open in notepad, and a bit of software on my laptop rolling dice to handle my side of character sheet, etc., but anyway. Hi Nancy, Neither have I. I suspect Charles made an assumption based on the d6 die he has used and assumed that all dice were that way, but as we both know that's not the case. The d10, d12, d20, etc have numbers on them not holes and are not very tactile and are inaccessible. Cheers! I don't know exactly what you mean about blind accessible dungeons and dragons, sinse Dungeons and dragons is perfectly accessible to play with sighted people provided you have either a copy of the manual (or can get one read), and some dice to roll. The manuals can be bought in electronic format from places like http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/ After that all you need to do is find a group playing and join them. I played DD with a group at my university for a while some years ago, and I meet with some friends to play mutants and masterminds (sort of the superhero version of DD, each weeek. have heard of people who play on forums or through mailing lists, but to be honest nothing can beat sitting down with a real human Game master and some players. You might get something of the same experience through voice chat sinse then at least all your actions are live, I'm not sure 've never done that, though to be honeest sinse DD and other tabletop rp games are something a blind person can do just as well as anyone else, you might as well find a local group and try it out. Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons Dragons for the blind
Hi Charlse. Most rp dice I've seen don't have spots like the usual D6's you might get with a game of monopoly or whatever. They have actual printed numbers which aren't tactile, which makes sense given your dealing with dice with up to 20 sides so you'd have to be putting lots of spots in a small space. I did find it was possible to get braille lables to fit the larger sized dice, however the D20 had faces which were just too small, one reason why the Gma dice program or similar is a better alternative for access. If you've seen any rp dice with tactile faces I'd be very interested to hear about it. I did recently hear of a company called 64 ounce games who were looking into making D20's along with braille sleeves for some popular none traditional card games but I'm not sure where that is or whether they do all the various other types of dice needed for DD.
