If contract says that “highest paid coach” clause should kick in
automatically and immediately when conditions meet, the athletic associations
of both schools whould go bankruptcy within seconds. That would be fun to
watch.

Meyer will be the second-highest paid coach in the SEC, along with
Alabama's Nick Saban, who also earns about $4 million a year. LSU coach Les
Miles signed a new contract 18 months ago that guaranteed he would always be
the highest-paid coach in the league.

Mountain West Commissioner wants Harris, Coaches polls abolished
by Ben Volin

Despite going 12-0 in the regular season, the Utah Utes were denied an
opportunity to play in the BCS championship game in favor of two one-loss
teams. The Utes were ranked No. 5 in the season-ending computer poll, but just
No. 7 in both the Harris and USA Today coaches polls.

“One of the Harris pollsters last year said, ‘Well I never saw Utah play,’”
said Craig Thompson, commissioner of the Mountain West Conference. “They were
on TV 11 times. National DirecTV satellite. Versus is on in 75 million homes.
CBS college is on in 33 million homes. That’s not a very concerted effort to do
your job. They’re easily found.”

I caught up with Thompson on Friday for a story on the SEC’s television
deal with ESPN, and how the rich are getting richer in college sports. His
conference opted to sign with Comcast/Versus and CBS College Sports three years
ago, because the only way MWC teams could get on ESPN was by playing on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The MWC’s television contracts pay each
team about $1.4 million per year, while SEC schools will now get $16 million
per year, $11 million of which comes directly from ESPN.

In our conversation, Thompson said he would like to see the Harris and
Coaches polls removed from the BCS equation, because they amount to little more
than opinion polls, he said. And most of the voters only know about college
football what they see on ESPN at the end of their Saturday night.

The Harris, Coaches and Computer polls each count for 1/3rd of the overall
BCS equation.

“I’ve never been a great fan of the opinion polls. That’s all they are,”
Thompson said. “Just the Tim Tebow story from last week is the perfect example.
Coaches aren’t filling those (ballots) out, and those that do, aren’t they kind
of busy on Saturdays?”

“I’ve always been a proponent of the computer polls,” Thompson added. “They
just look at statistics. At least it’s a little more performance based than a
human being that’s saying, ‘Well gee, I saw nine of their games….’”

My question is - how early will the NCAA let a college take a kid out of high
school?

Football players today can come in after 3.5 years of high school. Has any
football player come into any college after 3 years of high school? I think I
heard that basketball players are trying to skip their entire senior year at
high school.

Um... not if he's going to high school for 4 years. If he's already 15
going into the 9th grade, he'll be 16 or nearly 16 by the time he finishes 9th
grade. That means he won't graduate until he's 19 or very nearly 19. The
"normal" age for 9th grade is 14, although some kids do turn 15 during the
school year... just not *before* the school year starts... usually.

I wonder if he failed a grade or if his family started him in kindergarten
a year later than he could have legally started. I know there has been a trend
in the past 20 years or so to start kids, especially boys, a year later than
they could legally start kindergarten so that they'll have a year more of
physical maturity when they play sports later. It's even been called
"red-shirting".

I thought of that after I made the comment below. I shouldn't make any
assumptions about his academic talents.

you’re doing him or us a favor to try to rush him to college just because we’re
in a hurry to see him play. Four more years of coaching and physical
development will all be positive for him and just think how good he’ll be when

My daughter started college in the fall of her junior year and went

complete his/her requirements by the beginning of their junior year. I have
raised this question before on another forum, “Would the NCAA allow a student
to play in college if they have met the core requirements but not yet graduated
from high school? Also, many high schools will allow college classes to double
for high school graduation requirements (as my daughter did—she graduated high
school at the beginning of her sophomore year in college). Would the NCAA
allow a student to go to college without their core credits completed and
practice (train) but not play until the requirements are met?

Harumph.

In 1984, we won both the SEC Championship and the NYT National Title.

Before we laugh at the NYT trophy, bear in mind that it was as
legitimate (perhaps more so) than some of the MNCs claimed by Alabama
and Notre Dame. Seriously, look up some of the bizarre titles they
claim.

Granted the SEC voted to strip us of the 1984 title, but it doesn't
mean that we didn't win it; we won it and had it taken away. In fact,
I don't think it was even taken away, we still have the trophy
somewhere.

Had we been eligible, we would have won 1985 as well.

Jelani Jenkins is going to be a true freshman for UF this year, and he won't
turn 18 until March, so I'm sure he skipped a grade somewhere along the way.
Skill position players can make impacts right away (Harvin, Julio Jones,
Demps, etc.), but it's harder for the bigger guys. But, there is a reason
most college players, specifically lineman and linebackers, really blossom
when they become upperclassman, and it's not just 'learning the system'.
It's because they are physically maturing into men, and they're not 17-18
year old kids anymore.

Regardless, I hope all this ending HS early to get to college sooner thing
ends soon. The enrolling a semester early trend which has become the new
trend, especially at UF, is ok, but that's as far as I want it to go. Let
these kids grow up!

have raised this question before on another forum, "Would the NCAA allow a
student to play in college if they have met the core requirements but not
yet graduated from high school? Also, many high schools will allow college
classes to double for high school graduation requirements (as my daughter

Former UF player indicted on assault charge

The Associated Press

Published: Friday, July 31, 2009 at 9:29 p.m.
Last Modified: Friday, July 31, 2009 at 9:29 p.m.

JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi football signee Jamar Hornsby will not play for
the Rebels after his indictment on a felony aggravated assault charge
Friday.

Coach Houston Nutt said in a news release the player has been released from
his national letter of intent. Hornsby, who was already on probation in
Florida for a credit card fraud conviction, pleaded not guilty in Oktibbeha
County, Miss., Circuit Court and had a trial date set for Nov. 2.

"I am releasing Jamar Hornsby and he will not be a member of our football
team," Nutt said in the release. "We wish him nothing but the best in the
future."

Neither Nutt nor Hornsby's attorney, Steve Farese Sr., returned messages
left by The Associated Press on Friday.

The 22-year-old safety from Jacksonville, Fla., faces up to 20 years in
prison. He also could be forced to serve four years in Florida for violating
his probation. Bill Cervone, the state attorney for the area around
Gainesville, where Hornsby previously played for the Gators, told The
Associated Press he will now alert a judge of the indictment.

"He doesn't have to be convicted (for a revocation to happen), but he's not
going to get revoked just because he's been charged," Cervone said. "The
commission of an offense that violates his probation has to be proven."

This is the second time Hornsby's been denied a chance to play in the
Southeastern Conference. Urban Meyer kicked him off the Florida team
following his conviction for using a dead friend's credit card to run up
thousands of dollars in charges.

He played in eight games and had five tackles in 2007, but was suspended for
five games for selling his complimentary tickets, a violation of NCAA rules.

Hornsby appeared to get his life and career back on track after playing at
East Mississippi Community College last year. He had 111 tackles and two
interceptions last season and was named the MVP of the Mississippi junior
college northern region.

He signed a national letter of intent to play for the Rebels in February,
but on March 1 he was arrested following a late-night fender bender in a
McDonald's drive-through in Starkville.

Police said he attacked the man who bumped into his rear bumper while
waiting in line. He was originally accused of using brass knuckles and
taking a small amount of money from the man, but the indictment did not
mention the weapon or the theft.

In an interview earlier this week, Farese said he hopes if the case gets to
trial a jury would be allowed to consider the lesser offense of simple
assault because no weapon was used. Hornsby also could accept a plea deal if
one is offered.

That may not make a difference when it comes to the judge's decision in
Florida, though. Cervone said a judge would likely take a "dim" view of any
violation.

"The point is you're on probation," he said. "Keep your nose clean. And if
he's convicted of anything he by definition did not keep his nose clean, and
we're only talking in degrees about how dirty did he get."

Helen is, as usual, overly modest in her descriptions. Located in the

We got our tickets in the mail yesterday, so I'm ready to go!

For those who haven't seen them-

The tickets are larger than last year's version. The Gator head and the
opponent's logo are both embossed. This year's cover boys are Urban Meyer,
Brandon Spikes, Brandon James, Tim Tebow (for the FSU game, photographed at
last year's game with FSU end zone paint all over his jersey) and Albert. We
also get a helmet and a picture of the team running onto the field. A photo
of gloved hands holding the crystal ball is in the center of the ticket
sheet, not on an actual ticket. Tickets have your account number printed on
them this year, in addition to the bar code.

I watched the beginning of the South Carolina game this morning on Sunshine.
I had forgotten how our offense really had a lot of trouble getting going in
that game. Thank goodness for the defense and special teams. Hopefully
nobody is expecting things to be easy this year.

I would have to think that the NCAA really doesn't have any say over when a
kid can start playing collegiate sports, as long as they have completed all
of the necessary work and graduated HS. UF had a 15 year old female golfer a
couple years back, Hannah Yun. She was really good and just turned pro.
Here's a quick link on her: http://www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=12346

That's the youngest collegiate athlete I can remember, 15 year's old.

Also, there is a kid who would have been a senior this upcoming year who was
a top recruit in basketball who since he couldn't go into the NBA early
anymore (they've instituted an age limit rule), is skipping his senior year
of high school and going to play overseas. His name escapes me right now.

he's a rising 8th grader, than yes, he is a year old for his grade.

[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: RB Taylor's moves remind many of his dad

2009-08-03 Thread keith

My question is - how early will the NCAA let a college take a kid out of high school?

Football players today can come in after 3.5 years of high school.  Has any football player come into any college after 3 years of high school?  I think I heard that basketball players are trying to skip their entire senior year at high school.

Um... not if he's going to high school for 4 years.  If he's already 15 going into the 9th grade, he'll be 16 or nearly 16 by the time he finishes 9th grade.  That means he won't graduate until he's 19 or very nearly 19.  The "normal" age for 9th grade is 14, although some kids do turn 15 during the school year... just not *before* the school year starts... usually.

I wonder if he failed a grade or if his family started him in kindergarten a year later than he could have legally started.  I know there has been a trend in the past 20 years or so to start kids, especially boys, a year later than they could legally start kindergarten so that they'll have a year more of physical maturity when they play sports later.  It's even been called "red-shirting".

I thought of that after I made the comment below.  I shouldn't make any assumptions about his academic talents.

He would be graduating high school at 18. That's normal

I’m sure the NCAA wouldn’t mind, because we all know how flexible they are!  ;-)   Seriously, however good Taylor is in 8th grade, I don’t think you’re doing him or us a favor to try to rush him to college just because we’re in a hurry to see him play. Four more years of coaching and physical development will all be positive for him and just think how good he’ll be when he’s actually ready for his freshman year.

My daughter started college in the fall of her junior year and went full time her senior year.  With careful planning, it is possible for a kid to complete his/her requirements by the beginning  of their junior year.  I have raised this question before on another forum, “Would the NCAA allow a student to play in college if they have met the core requirements but not yet graduated from high school?  Also, many high schools will allow college classes to double for high school graduation requirements (as my daughter did—she graduated high school at the beginning of her sophomore year in college).  Would the NCAA allow a student to go to college without their core credits completed and practice (train) but not play until the requirements are met?

Not sure what to make of this kid.

Maybe next year will give us a true indication of what his stats are.

I assume that kids have to go to high school for 3 and 1/2 years before they can go to college?
