OK - here's a very off-topic post for the creative minds on the list.

This year Leslie and I will be on St. John, USVI for Halloween. That's also the
day the Gators play the vile buttsniffing mutts.

Obviously we'll watch the game somewhere, but afterward we'll hit one or two of
the bars in Coral Bay to take part in some Halloween festivities.

Our costumes need to be something that's not too elaborate or take up much room
since we plan to pack very light (we hope to be able to do carry on only).
Leslie has found a simple stingray costume that a friend is helping her make.

Since pirates are a part of the culture, or at least the tourist culture in the
Caribbean, and since I have a custom made Gators "do-rag" that I sometimes wear
when scuba diving, I figured I'd go as a Gator pirate.

What else can you think of to help me complete my costume? An orange and/or
blue eye patch? What else?

Thanks me mateys!

Steve

Trendspotting:

I believe that I am seeing more and more safeties and LBs (not
necessarily our team, but across college football) go for a hard hit
against opposing ballcarriers as opposed to wrapping up for a tackle.

I know that the bit hits get replayed on Sportscenter, but its seems
like an attempt for the flamboyant individual performance that is
detrimental to the team goal. I see several plays every game where a
1st Down or a TD is gained because the first defender tried to "blow
up" the ballcarrier instead of wrapping him up.

Anyone else noticing this?

My feeling is this team is playing on the edge.  We have a few players that are
injured, a few more that are playing but not 100%, couple that with
conservative play calling and what I sense as the offense playing 'tight'.
That leads to a 31 point 1st quarter in Kentucky when everything goes right or
to a 10 point win against UT when Tim fumbles late or a near death experience
when we get into the redzone 4 times with zero points to show for the effort.

In the Arky game, if we don't fumble, we win going away.  Arky had to play the
best game of their lives and we had to play our worst.  Still it took
essentially two defensive breakdowns to keep them in the game.  If we make one
of the 5 missed tackles on the long TD run, or if Janoris doesn't get caught
playing the run (for the 2nd time), the long pass play doesn't happen.

For everyone who is saying it is okay to play conservative, survive and
advance, that is fine but it leaves no room for error.  This team needs to
learn to trust the younger receivers, play a little looser  and have a margin
for error when we get the best from our opponent.

Having said that, I do think we will turn it around.  Everyone wants to talk
about how great Alabama is, but that USC game was a lot closer than the final
score indicated..  If SOS wasn't so damn stubborn and insisted on throwing the
same fade pattern from the 4, 3 times in a row - that game might be different
as well..

I think we figure it out this week.  Miss St was always known for tough
defense, not sure they have that this year.  Their offense is better, but they
don't have the athletes they need to run the spread effectively against our
defense.  Gators 42 Miss St. 3

Subject: [gatortalk] What are our opponents afraid of - when playing us?

That depends a lot on the quality of the opponent.  Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and
less talented teams - fear everything and hope to catch us napping.

But the better teams - do they fear our defense?  What about after the Arkansas
game?  The only real offense we have played this year.

Do they fear our offense?  Obviously they are psyched out about Tebow.  But
what if we played Brantley instead of Tebow - would they fear our offense?

Do they fear our special teams?  Use to be - whenever Brandon James would go
out to field a kickoff or a punt - everyone was on the edge of their seat.  And
when it came time for our opponents to punt - everyone sat on the edge of their
seat - wondering if we would block it?

Or do we suffer from a phenom of where we have so many talents - that no one
talent stands out - so we have nothing special about us?  After all we are
ranked #1 and lead the SEC in many categories.

I would say the latter - but "college football experts" see that in Alabama -
but not us?

OK - here's a very off-topic post for the creative minds on the list.

This year Leslie and I will be on St. John, USVI for Halloween. That's
also the day the Gators play the vile buttsniffing mutts.

Obviously we'll watch the game somewhere, but afterward we'll hit one or
two of the bars in Coral Bay to take part in some Halloween festivities.

Our costumes need to be something that's not too elaborate or take up
much room since we plan to pack very light (we hope to be able to do
carry on only). Leslie has found a simple stingray costume that a friend
is helping her make.

OK - here's a very off-topic post for the creative minds on the list.

If not this week, soon. If you look at last year, this was about the same
time we got going.

As I said earlier, I'm happy for Alabama to be under the magnifying glass
for awhile. I bet it will help us play looser.

Yeah, what was up with that fade 4 times in a row? SC could have won that
game with a more imaginative offense.

about how great Alabama is, but that USC game was a lot closer than the
final score indicated. If SOS wasn't so damn stubborn and insisted on
throwing the same fade pattern from the 4, 3 times in a row - that game

My feeling is this team is playing on the edge. We have a few players that
are injured, a few more that are playing but not 100%, couple that with
conservative play calling and what I sense as the offense playing 'tight'.
That leads to a 31 point 1st quarter in Kentucky when everything goes right
or to a 10 point win against UT when Tim fumbles late or a near death
experience when we get into the redzone 4 times with zero points to show for
the effort.

In the Arky game, if we don't fumble, we win going away. Arky had to play
the best game of their lives and we had to play our worst. Still it took
essentially two defensive breakdowns to keep them in the game. If we make
one of the 5 missed tackles on the long TD run, or if Janoris doesn't get
caught playing the run (for the 2nd time), the long pass play doesn't
happen.

For everyone who is saying it is okay to play conservative, survive and
advance, that is fine but it leaves no room for error. This team needs to
learn to trust the younger receivers, play a little looser and have a
margin for error when we get the best from our opponent.

Having said that, I do think we will turn it around. Everyone wants to talk

That depends a lot on the quality of the opponent. Kentucky, Vanderbilt,
and less talented teams - fear everything and hope to catch us napping.

But the better teams - do they fear our defense? What about after the
Arkansas game? The only real offense we have played this year.

Do they fear our offense? Obviously they are psyched out about Tebow. But
what if we played Brantley instead of Tebow - would they fear our offense?

Do they fear our special teams? Use to be - whenever Brandon James would go
out to field a kickoff or a punt - everyone was on the edge of their seat.
And when it came time for our opponents to punt - everyone sat on the edge
of their seat - wondering if we would block it?

Or do we suffer from a phenom of where we have so many talents - that no one
talent stands out - so we have nothing special about us? After all we are
ranked #1 and lead the SEC in many categories.

I would say the latter - but "college football experts" see that in Alabama
- but not us?

Yes, they are what they are. So, this year we're putting up better numbers
against better teams. We're also undefeated at this point. The 2008 team,
as we all remember, was not at this point of the season.

They had one bad game and still won. I think this team has the potential to
do better than last year's team, and the '06 team and the '08 team and even
the '96 team. They can still go undefeated through the regular season.
They can still win the bowl game. If they do, they will have to be
recognized as the best team in Gator history.

That said, if you think Arkansas was a trap game, you're going to see a
bigger trap game in StarkVegas this Saturday. MSU has improved each week
since the season began and. we're playing there!

I think we'll win, but it's going to be another difficult SEC game.

I haven't looked at the Pick'em yet (dumb game) but I'll bet we're favored
by a lot less than 24 this week.

So, we get by them and we've got the leg humpers, FIU, Vandy and the semis
left. I see the potential to go into the SECCG looking pretty good.

The WRs have to quit dropping those long bombs eventually. They'll get
better and that should open up the running game even more.

I'm looking forward to a great rest-of-the-season.

They

by Robbie Andreu
(Gainesville SUN)

At about the same time last season, a loss to Ole Miss seemed to unite the
Gators and send them speeding off in the right direction after some
early-season struggles. Will a near-loss to Arkansas on Saturday have a
similar effect?

Will the Gators start opening things up and turning things on like they did
during their national championship run a year ago?

It's possible. But probably not likely. That's not to say the Gators won't
run the table and reach the national title game. What I'm saying is don't
expect this UF team to become the offensive juggernaut that last year's team
did after the Ole Miss loss.

Six games into the season, it's obvious the Gators are what they are.
They're a very good defensive team that can shut down opponents when they
don't have breakdowns and mental lapses like a week ago. They're a
struggling offensive team that doesn't have the playmakers (especially in
the passing game) they had a year ago to roll up all kinds of points.

Somehow the Gators won a game they probably should have lost Saturday. Like
Tim Tebow said Monday, it took a lot of heart and character to somehow earn
a victory with those four lost fumbles and six sacks.

Maybe the near-loss will take off some of the pressure and UF will start
making some of those plays they've been just missing on offensive. Maybe
that will lead to more relaxing games and a wider margin of victory.

But the thinking here is that was just the first of what could be several
down-to-the-wire games for UF the rest of the way. The Gators know they can
win those games, just like they did Saturday.

To win the national championship, the Gators probably will have to do it the
way they did in 2006, when they managed games so well offensively and found
a way to win each week.

Buckle your seatbelts, because it could be a thrilling (and scary) ride the
rest of the way.

So I guess we can expect Kiffen to helicopter in to a Deland game soon and

That seems to be his M.O., wait until the Gators evaluate the talent and

DeLand's standout junior ATH De'Ante 'Pop' Saunders commits to Florida

By Buddy Collings

Sentinel Staff Writer

9:53 PM EDT, October 19, 2009

DELAND - DeLand standout junior athlete De'Ante "Pop" Saunders has committed
to the University of Florida, the Gators first verbal for the 2011 signing
class.

Florida faxed a written scholarship offer to DeLand High on behalf of junior
De'Ante "Pop" Saunders on Monday. That's all it took to land a player who
starts on offense, defense and as a return man for a 7-0 state-ranked team.

Saunders, part of DeLand's "Double Barrel" combo with fellow running back
Shontrelle Johnson, a Northwestern commitment for 2010, is the No. 1-ranked
player in Sentinel's Central Florida Top 50 for juniors, and ranks No. 20 on
the Sentinel's 2011 state Top 100.

Saunders, Central Florida's leader in rushing yards with exactly 1,000,
asked his high school coach to call the Gators back and tell them he was
committed.

"It was a place that I always wanted to go," Saunders said. "Once I saw they
had a full ride for me, I knew I that what was I wanted to do. I always
liked Florida, even when I was little."

The 6-foot, 180-pound two-sport star has received major college offers for
both football and basketball. He was the leading scorer for a Nike Team
Florida basketball travel team that was runner-up in the AAU 16-and-under
national tournament.

"Right now, I'm pretty much in love with football more than I am with
basketball," Saunders said.

Saunders starts at wingback and cornerback for DeLand.

"Florida likes him for both offense and defense. They just like him as an
athlete," said DeLand Coach Kevin Pettis. "He's probably the most talented
punt returner I've ever been around."

Saunders attended UF's Friday Night Lights Camp this summer and attended a
home game against Tennessee. He saw UF home games vs. Ole Miss, LSU and
Hawaii last year with former DeLand teammate Mike Gillislee, who is now a
freshman running back for the Gators.

"That's a big factor, Mike being up there. We've been friends since we were
little," Saunders said.

Do they fear our offense?  Obviously they are psyched out about Tebow.  But
what if we played Brantley instead of Tebow - would they fear our offense?
Tebow brings a unique skill set to the table. In my opinion, next year we will
see something completely different, but possibly just as spectacular, with
Brantley at the helm.

Do they fear our special teams?  Use to be - whenever Brandon James would go
out to field a kickoff or a punt - everyone was on the edge of their seat.  And
when it came time for our opponents to punt - everyone sat on the edge of their
seat - wondering if we would block it?
The low number of blocks this year may be due to our reputation causing the
opposition to spend extra time preparing to take that away from us. Our return
game, while probably at least average, has been disappointing to say the least.
You'd think if teams were going max protect for their punter it would make it
harder for them to contain the return game, but that hasn't been consistently
dangerous looking this year. For the most part the kickoff coverage has been
good. Not so much on saturday, but I noticed that most of the kickoffs were
close to the middle of the field, as opposed to the corner where we usually go
with them, so that may have accounted for some of the difference.

Or do we suffer from a phenom of where we have so many talents - that no one
talent stands out - so we have nothing special about us?  After all we are
ranked #1 and lead the SEC in many categories.
That may be a part of it, but I think that the coaches have been reluctant, at
least on offense, to really open things up. Our tendency to turn the ball over,
which is something we rarely have done the last few years may make this offense
look a lot less potent than it is. I saw flashes of opening it up onSaturday,
but we seem to always have one unit that seems to have an off day, making the
whole thing out of sync. It was the offensive line (either by execution or by
scheme) that held us back this time. Not to mention some untimely dropped
passes as well as the aforementioned fumbles that happened when everything else
was working.

I would say the latter - but "college football experts" see that in Alabama -
but not us?
In this case we're being penalized by competing against the unrealistic "best
team ever" expectations going in to the season.

If you look at the numbers, against similar competition Alabama isn't
outperforming us on either side of the ball, but since we're not blowing teams
out, everyone wonders what's "wrong" with us.

All IMO of course.

Steve M.

So I guess we can expect Kiffen to helicopter in to a Deland game soon and
offer this young man a scholly?

That seems to be his M.O., wait until the Gators evaluate the talent and then
go after them wholeheartedly.

DeLand's standout junior ATH De'Ante 'Pop' Saunders commits to Florida
By Buddy Collings
Sentinel Staff Writer
9:53 PM EDT, October 19, 2009
DELAND - DeLand standout junior athlete De'Ante "Pop" Saunders has committed to
the University of Florida, the Gators first verbal for the 2011 signing class.

Florida faxed a written scholarship offer to DeLand High on behalf of junior
De’Ante “Pop” Saunders on Monday. That’s all it took to land a player who
starts on offense, defense and as a return man for a 7-0 state-ranked team.

Saunders, Central Florida’s leader in rushing yards with exactly 1,000, asked
his high school coach to call the Gators back and tell them he was committed.

“It was a place that I always wanted to go,” Saunders said. “Once I saw they
had a full ride for me, I knew I that what was I wanted to do. I always liked
Florida, even when I was little.”The 6-foot, 180-pound two-sport star has
received major college offers for both football and basketball. He was the
leading scorer for a Nike Team Florida basketball travel team that was
runner-up in the AAU 16-and-under national tournament.

“Right now, I’m pretty much in love with football more than I am with
basketball,” Saunders said.

Saunders starts at wingback and cornerback for DeLand.

“Florida likes him for both offense and defense. They just like him as an
athlete,” said DeLand Coach Kevin Pettis. “He’s probably the most talented punt
returner I’ve ever been around.”

Saunders attended UF’s Friday Night Lights Camp this summer and attended a home
game against Tennessee. He saw UF home games vs. Ole Miss, LSU and Hawaii last
year with former DeLand teammate Mike Gillislee, who is now a freshman running
back for the Gators.

“That’s a big factor, Mike being up there. We’ve been friends since we were
little,” Saunders said.

[gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] SEC says bad call on Arkansas penalty

2009-10-20 Thread Bill Hileman
What I think a lot of people miss on this is something that you WOULDN'T see
on a video, and that's audio. When I watched the replay, based on the guy's
body English (he made a violent motion with his arm after knocking the Gator
player down) I'm guessing he said something rather unsportsmanlike to the
Gator (as he punctuated with his arm) but I don't know. If that's the case,
I wish the ref would speak up. And with nobody else hearing anything, it
would certainly "look" like a bad call.

SEC: No video proof of Sheppard foul
  Comment Email Print Share
  Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Southeastern Conference says there's no video
evidence to support the personal foul call against Arkansas' Malcolm
Sheppard in the fourth quarter of the Razorbacks' 23-20 loss to Florida.

  SEC blog
ESPN.com's Chris Low writes about all things SEC in his conference blog.

  • Blog network:
  College Football Nation

The penalty gave the Gators the ball on the Arkansas 10-yard line, and
they scored on the next play to tie the game at 20. Arkansas athletic
director Jeff Long said Monday the school had expressed its concerns to the
league.

The league said schools can send in plays after each game for review. The
SEC said it told Arkansas "there was no evidence on the video to support the
personal foul penalty."

It was the same group of officials that called the LSU-Georgia game
earlier this month, which included a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty
the league said shouldn't have been called.
