2010-06-14 Thread Jerry Belloit
Woody,

My memory is getting bad. I remember playing Duke back in the early 70's.
I thought I remembered that they had left the SEC, but I was wrong.
Actually (I looked this up) the original SEC was 13 teams and included
Sewanee (University of the South), Tulane, and Ga Tech. Interestingly, the
glory days of Georgia Tech were while they were in the SEC. (The Rambling
Wreck from Georgia Tech.) Sewanee left in 1940. Ga Tech left in 1964.
Tulane left in 1966. South Carolina and Arkansas were added in 1991.

Perhaps for non-revenue sports, this is an inexpensive trip for Arky (and
potentially UT).

Not sure, where is A&M, really?

Surely, there are other better choices within our footprint.

2010-06-14 Thread John Vega

Finals are best 2 of 3, so the minimum there is 2.

Now, the initial pool is 4 teams.

Win Game 1, and you are in the winner's bracket.

Play the winner of the other game, and win again.

Your game 2 loser and the winner of the losers' bracket game play
each other while you take the day off, the winner to face you in your
third game on the morrow.

Win that game and it is on to the Championship (a minimum of two more
games).

So, 5 is the minimum.

The max? Hmm.

It seems like 7 (add two losses), but I think it is really 8 as there
is an extra game to win as well:

1. Lose Game 1
2. Win Game 2 (losers' bracket)
3. Win Game 3 (against loser of winners' bracket)
4. Win Game 4 (against winner of winners' bracket)
5. Win Game 5 (also against winner of winners' bracket, as it is
double elimination and you just gave it its first loss)

Now, play in the Championship and have it go all three games for 8
total.

Really, I wonder what the formula for deciding whether a team can
(at least) pull its own weight in the conference, financially.

How much more is the conference's television contract worth with UF
than without? It's speculative, but I assume the conference execs
are doing a similar exercise with all the potential adds.

Interesting that back in the early '90s, the conference first wanted
F$U and scUM, not Arkansas or USC. It turned out better this way for
the conference, I think. It was the schools' lucky day when USC and
Arkansas got invited to join. It was the conference's lucky day when
F$U and scUM said no.

If we add Texas A&M, and feel the need to add a team from the
eastern side of the country, I think Clemson would be the best fit,
among those being mentioned. Maybe because (I think) they actually
sell out their stadium, and seem to be as football-crazy as the rest
of the conference. Of course, if it's all about adding media
markets, the it will probably be VT.

Clemson is already out according to the media pundits. A&M would open up a
media market and a very rich recruiting bed. Similarly VT.

Why do we want Texas A&M, other than getting exposure in Texas? Is that
sufficient? (Maybe the conference just wants all the teams where Bear Bryant
was a HC).

Really, I wonder what the formula for deciding whether a team can (at least)
pull its own weight in the conference, financially.

How much more is the conference's television contract worth with UF than
without? It's speculative, but I assume the conference execs are doing a
similar exercise with all the potential adds.

Interesting that back in the early '90s, the conference first wanted F$U and
scUM, not Arkansas or USC. It turned out better this way for the conference,
I think. It was the schools' lucky day when USC and Arkansas got invited to
join. It was the conference's lucky day when F$U and scUM said no.

If we add Texas A&M, and feel the need to add a team from the eastern side
of the country, I think Clemson would be the best fit, among those being
mentioned. Maybe because (I think) they actually sell out their stadium, and
seem to be as football-crazy as the rest of the conference. Of course, if
it's all about adding media markets, the it will probably be VT.

Sources: Departure to Pac-10 coming

By Joe Schad
ESPN

The departure of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the
Pac-10 is imminent, four sources within the Big 12 said Monday.

One source said commissioner Dan Beebe's last-minute plan to save the
conference has "zero" chance to succeed. Another source said it is "very
unlikely" to succeed.

Texas' interests in being aligned with the research opportunities and
academic missions of Pac-10 schools is driving the decision, along with
money.

Beebe's last-ditch plan included an emotional plea about preserving
rivalries and maintaining the best welfare of the student-athlete, one
source said.

Texas A&M is now most likely to join the SEC, a source within the Big 12
said. This move, in the wake of Colorado and Nebraska's departure, would
further diminish the chance of Beebe's plan succeeding, one source said.

Texas' decision is expected to come no later than Tuesday. One source
familiar with Texas' plans suggested a hearing on Wednesday at the Texas
House of Representatives is "a nonfactor."

A report on Orangebloods.com said that Texas is committed to discussions
with the remaining 10 schools in the Big 12 about a plan put together by
Beebe that would keep the league intact with its current programs.

The plan includes assurances that a TV deal could net each school between
$14 million and $17 million, Orangebloods.com reported, and schools such as
Texas could still have their own TV network.

For the Gators' sake, let's hope UCLA doesn't again put a damper on Florida
's diamond dreams at the College World Series.

Florida (47-15), the No. 3 national seed, will play UCLA (48-14), the No. 6
national seed, in a College World Series first-round game this weekend at
Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Game times will be determined tonight
after the final super regional game between Oklahoma and Virginia. Alabama
and Clemson play Game 3 of the Clemson Super Regional later today.

Florida-UCLA will play at either 2 or 7 p.m. Saturday or 2 or 7 p.m. Sunday
in the double-elimination tournament.

The ESPN network will provide television coverage. Gator games will also be
on 103.7 FM.

Florida State , top-seeded Arizona State , South Carolina and TCU join UF
and UCLA in already qualifying for the CWS.

As you may remember, UCLA knocked the Florida softball team into the losers'
bracket with a 16-3 first-round loss at the Women's College World Series in
Oklahoma City on June 3. UCLA went on to win the national title, while UF
went 1-2.

[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] Gators point short of winning NCAA track

2010-06-14 Thread John Vega

I watched the meet.

It was a little strange that we didn't even have a single runner in
the finals of either of these events.

Even an 8th place finish in the finals is worth a point, the point
that we needed.

into first with 45 points.

But Texas A&M’s Curtis Mitchell and Phiri picked up nine points in
the 200 final by finishing second and eighth, respectively, and
then the Aggies and Ducks were tied, two points up on Florida.
