By the way, I remember when the SEC season had only six conference games. A
ten team conference and only six conference games. It wasn't that long ago.

If the schedule fell the right way, it wasn't so difficult to win the
championship. Unfortunately, we never managed it (except in '84 and '85, when
the lousy hypocrites wouldn't recognize our titles).

I think they went to seven conference games in 1990, then eight with the
expansion in '92.

This is why we had to drop scUM from the schedule.

Yes, they need at least 12 to have the championship game.
They and the big ten are expanding simply because they're tired of being
overlooked the last week of the season while the se c is getting all the
attention.

Granted, Lake Tahoe is on the border.

Now Boulder, that seems like a hike.

My favorite memory of the old Chemistry building was an organic
chemistry
class I had in the old amphitheater auditorium classroom. I had a young
handsome newly minted professor teaching this class of several hundred
in
1972.Streaking had just hit the campus. A beautiful young woman
came in
through the front door which was near the pit where the instructor
taught.
She streaked up the aisle yelling about how hot he was and ran out the
back
fire escape door. Obviously the instructor had lost control of the
class.
Every time the instructor tried to get back to lecturing, he would say a
sentence or two and then burst out laughing again. After several
attempts,
he finally gave up and cancelled the remainder of class.

My frustration was that I had dozed off and missed seeing much of the
young
woman even though there was obviously a lot to see!

New UF chemistry building is needed

Work on the building itself will start when funding is approved.

A new and much-needed chemistry building is being built in the
historical
part of the University of Florida campus in what is now a parking lot
near
the intersection of Buckman Drive and West University Avenue.

The building will provide more research facilities for chemistry
undergraduates and graduate students who are using facilities that are
50 to
60 years old.

When funding becomes available next year, the building itself will be
constructed, but at the moment workers are doing preliminary work, said
Frank Javaheri, the project's manager. The building will cost $65
million.

"Only the underground and utilities are being constructed for now,"
Javaheri
said.

The parking lot where the building will be put up will be relocated,
Javaheri said, but its new site has not been determined yet.

The new building is needed because UF's chemistry department doesn't
have
enough room for its students, said Daniel R. Talham, chairman of the
chemistry department.

Also, most of the chemistry labs date from the 1940s and 1950s and need
to
be modernized, Talham said.

The new building will provide students with new research facilities and
modern equipment that the old buildings don't have.

The contractor is Skanska USA Building Inc., and the completion date is
scheduled for July 2014.

The building will include four floors of labs and offices.

It will be divided into two undergraduate teaching floors, two floors of
graduate research space, a basement and a mechanical penthouse.

The architectural style will be gothic to match the architecture of the
nearby buildings.

To see the design and to read information about the building, go online
to

www.chem.ufl.edu/dept/newbuilding.shtml.

I remember going through chemistry labs around 1980 - and it all seemed very
old then.

I will never forget my first chemistry lab. You had to bend glass. Idea
was - to teach you to be careful since everyone burned the crap out of
themselves.

A new and much-needed chemistry building is being built in the historical
part of the University of Florida campus in what is now a parking lot near
the intersection of Buckman Drive and West University Avenue.

The building will provide more research facilities for chemistry
undergraduates and graduate students who are using facilities that are 50 to
60 years old.

When funding becomes available next year, the building itself will be
constructed, but at the moment workers are doing preliminary work, said
Frank Javaheri, the project's manager. The building will cost $65 million.

"Only the underground and utilities are being constructed for now," Javaheri
said.

The parking lot where the building will be put up will be relocated,
Javaheri said, but its new site has not been determined yet.

The new building is needed because UF's chemistry department doesn't have
enough room for its students, said Daniel R. Talham, chairman of the
chemistry department.

Also, most of the chemistry labs date from the 1940s and 1950s and need to
be modernized, Talham said.
