I have a UF Tennessee plate. Oh wait! It's hanging on the wall in my office.

I am in St. Louis for a business trip and when pulling into my hotel parking
lot I parked next to a Lexus Hybrid and noticed that it had a Tennessee
license plate that was a vanity plate with the University of Florida logo
and and name.

I remember a while back that we had a discussion about UF getting several
other states to issue UF vanity plates in their states. Is it possible that
some one on this list is in St. Louis now? Sure would be interesting to
meet the person. I asked at the Front desk, but obviously they have to
observe customer privacy and security policies.
Do any of you on this list know someone in Tennessee that has one of these
plates?

Just wondering.

[gatortalk] My $.02

2013-10-14 Thread jfranl
I think Murphy did a very good job
considering the breakdowns on offense. I am still a believer in our coaches and think
the Gators are going to be really good, at some point. It is like Spurrier, when he was being
bullheaded about putting Danny into the shotgun, I think the coaches need to
understand what Gainesville Sun’s Dooley states below and adjust….IMNSHO!

 Dooley,
“I
know what Will Muschamp is trying to do offensively and it does work against
lesser teams. But in the last five big games Florida has played, the Gators are 1-4 and
have averaged 13.5 points in those losses. The offense can’t be completely
changed but there needs to be some major tweaking. Losing is bad, but losing
and being boring is worse.”

Other
things that I have read:

Pooch punt on 4th down at the LSU 35? Cowardice!

Gator fans are extremely critical about Muschamp's penchant to dominate
time of possession. Here was one of the better comments: "Nobody ever
succeeded by chewing up clock when they were behind by 2 or more scores. It's
bad enough to sit on a lead. To sit on your opponent's lead is unfathomable."

Go
Gators!

UF volleyball caps weekend with sweep of Georgia
 By Jim Harvin
 Gainesville SUN Correspondent
 Published: Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 7:24 p.m.
 Last Modified: Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 7:24 p.m.

Second-ranked Florida closed out its first SEC home weekend in style,
 following up Friday's 3-0 sweep of No. 15 Kentucky with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-18
sweep of Georgia on Sunday before an O'Connell Center crowd of 2,209.
It was UF's 12th straight win and ninth straight sweep. The Gators (17-1,
6-0) have yet to lose a set in SEC play.
“Offensively we got really good play out of everybody, but I think the tone
of the match was set with Holly Pole's dig early-on in set one,” coach Mary
Wise said. “Georgia took a very good rip, and Holly just stepped in there and
made not only a dig, but it was a quality dig, and we went from defense to
 offense.
“That's how we're trying to evolve as a team. From that, the energy just kept
going, and we really made some nice defensive plays.”
The Bulldogs (14-4, 4-2), whose 14 wins match their total from last season,
came into the match having won six of their last seven. But UF never allowed
them to get in any offensive rhythm as the Gators converted an impressive 82
percent (41-of-50) of their side-out opportunities..
“The phrase we use is 'one-and-done,'” Wise said. “The server goes back one
time, and then we rotate. It's hard for opponents to gain momentum because
that's how you really gain momentum is on service runs.
“Credit our passers and our offense. Even if it wasn't a first-swing kill, we
were able to win the rally. This team is showing more and more patience that
 way.”
UF again showed excellent balance. After having four players in double-digit
kills in the win over the Wildcats, the Gators had three Sunday, with senior
All-American middle blocker Chloe Mann and freshman right-side hitter Alex
Holston sharing match-high honors with 11 apiece.
Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Simone Antwi had 10 kills, while sophomore
outside hitters Ziva Recek and Gabby Mallette added eight and seven,
 respectively.
“What we're evolving into is a team that's hard to guard because of our
ability to get kills out of different positions,” Wise said. “We've become
 less one-dimensional.”
Holston, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week who had a match-high .667
hitting mark Friday, led all players again, this time with a .714 mark.
The left-hander finished the weekend with 24 kills, only two errors and a
 .688 hitting percentage.
“If Alex isn't the SEC Offensive Player of the Week this week, then someone
has had a career weekend,” Wise said. “Her numbers are just eye-popping.
These numbers would be outstanding if they were by a senior, but it' s a
freshman, and not a freshman middle. Maybe in a junior or senior middle, but
not in a pin hitter who's a freshman.”
 Four Gators – Holston, Mann (.588), Antwi (.444) and Recek (.316) – hit .300
or better. As a team, UF hit .366, the 15th time in 18 matches this season
Florida has topped the .300 mark.
The Gators also were impressive defensively, holding the Bulldogs to an .032
mark, the 14th time this year UF has held an opponent below .200.
Redshirt junior libero Taylor Unroe led the way with a match-high 14 digs,
and senior setter Taylor Brauneis added 10 digs to go with a match-high 43
assists for her fourth double-double of the season.
Georgia's leading scorer was senior outside hitter Brittany Northcutt with
 seven kills.
“It was good serving, good defense, good setting – just good effort across
the board, and we all played well together,” Antwi said. “It was really two
big wins this weekend against two really good teams, so that will help us for
 the rest of the season.”

We saw Kelvin Taylor after Matt Jones when down with a likely season-ending
knee injury, sad for Matt, and I know it was exciting to see Kelvin's runs,
I think we also saw Kelvin's limitations on picking up the blitz, which
seemed to affect Tyler's time to throw. Sad for Matt, but hopefully Kelvin
will make the most of this opportunity.

Helen, you have perfectly captured my ambiguity about this game. The opposing
team was simply better, and tougher, in every aspect of the game. You're
supposed to lose when that happens. There's not much else to say, except that I
hope Muschamp eventually realizes that you need both an offense and a defense
to win the tough games.

[gatortalk] Offensive stats: why it used to be more fun to watch the Gators

2013-10-14 Thread Helen Huntley
From Bleacher Report:

It was never supposed to be like this. Not at Florida.

When Tim Tebow was taking the snaps in Gainesville, the Florida Gators were
an offensive machine that led the conference in total offense every season
from 2006-2009.

But Tebow's departure following the 2009 season was the start of a slow
disintegration of the Florida offense to a point where, now, it's a shell
of its former self.

The Gators averaged more than 450 yards per game in each of the seasons in
which Tebow was the starting quarterback (2007-09), but they have struggled
to crack 350 yards per game since his departure.
Florida Total Offense Since 2006 Year Yards Per Game Points Per Game 2006
396.1 29.7 2007 457.2 42.5 2008 445.1 43.6 2009 457.9 35.9 2010 351.2

For weeks, Florida fans have clamored for more carries for freshman running
back Kelvin Taylor.
Gator Nation will get its wish, but not in the way it had hoped. Sophomore
running back Matt Jones is done for the season with a torn meniscus in his left
knee, another blow to an already injury-depleted squad, Florida coach Will
Muschamp announced Monday.
Jones underwent surgery to repair the knee ligament Monday. Muschamp initially
thought Jones suffered a knee sprain Saturday against LSU, but it turned out to
be a tear.
It was a final setback in a rocky sophomore season for Jones, who sat out all
of August camp and the season opener against Toledo with a serious viral
infection. Jones finished the season with 339 yards and two touchdowns. He will
not be eligible for a medical redshirt.
“I hate it for Matt.” Muschamp said. “He's a great young man, to go through
what he's been through this fall, missing all of most of fall camp. Working his
way back in shape and starting to feel good about himself, as far as how he
felt physically, mentally and then to have this setback is just disheartening
for all of us.”
Jones is the seventh Gator to suffer a season-ending injury this season,
joining wide receiver/kick returner Andre Debose (torn ACL), linebacker Matt
Rolin (torn ACL), quarterback Jeff Driskel (broken leg), right tackle Chaz
Green (torn labrum), defensive back Nick Washington (shoulder surgery) and
defensive tackle Dominique Easley (torn ACL).
Muschamp said it’s the worst season of injuries he’s encountered as a coach.
“It’s unfortunate,” Muschamp said. “More than anything, I hate it for the young
men. They put a lot of time and effort into playing this game and for that to
happen, I’m disappointed for them first of all. That’s what hurts the most, to
see guys go through the struggle and having to make that phone call and tell
them what’s going on or having to walk them in the training room to tell them
what’s happening. That’s very frustrating for a young man with as much time and
effort as they put into it.”
The banged-up Gators will see if Taylor, the son of former Gator and NFL
running back Fred Taylor, can provide a spark in the running game. Last week,
Taylor showed promise, rushing for 52 yards on 10 carries. Muschamp said Taylor
had his best week in practice before the LSU game in terms of picking up
blocking assignments and securing the ball.
“When you’re able to do those two things, you give us more confidence in
situationally playing you in the game,” Muschamp said. “I thought he did a good
job of that. He deserved the opportunity. Regardless of the injury, he was
going to play in the game more than he had previous to this game. Obviously,
the injury accelerated that.”
Muschamp said junior Mack Brown (340 yards, three TDs) and Taylor will get the
bulk of the carries Saturday when the Gators travel to No. 14 Missouri. Ocala
native Mark Herndon will move up to third on the running back depth chart and
redshirt sophomore Valdez Showers will continue his role as a sweep
runner/receiver on perimeter plays.
With a limited roster, Florida (4-2, 3-1 SEC) has plenty of issues to solve
heading into a critical road game at unbeaten Missouri (6-0, 2-0 SEC). The
Gators allowed four quarterback sacks and were pressured for most of the game
in a 17-6 loss at LSU last Saturday.
“We need to communicate a little bit better on some things,” Muschamp said.
“Again, it was across the board. Everybody wants to blame the offensive line.
But just communicate a little better, set a little better, hold the pocket, be
more firm in the pocket, not as much push in the pocket. There’s multiple
things that we can improve on from last Saturday.”
Defensively, Florida gave up 175 yards rushing against LSU and is allowing 4.8
yards per carry since Easley’s season-ending injury.
“The past few weeks, I wouldn't say that we did a good job of stopping the
run,” Florida senior defensive back Jaylen Watkins said.
But a win against Missouri would put Florida back in the hunt for the SEC East
division title.

GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY

RE: [gatortalk] Not one single post

2013-10-14 Thread Randy Platt
Pretty much describes the mood around the Platt house.

We got whipped at the line of scrimmage and didn't make enough plays to
overcome that failing. Defensively, did missing Easley make that much
difference on the line of scrimmage? In the first half every time I looked,
we were getting blown off the line of scrimmage and then our lb and db
couldn't tackle the RB until he was 7 yards down field. Louis Purifoy
complete whiffs a tackle. We allow them to convert a 3rd 17. I can go on
and on. Offensively, our tackles can't handle a speed rush, so to counter
that they commit illegal procedure to keep their QB from getting killed. I
thought after the first possession, a solid opening drive, we had too many
offensive linemen either miss a block or looking for someone to block. When
we did make the blocks we had RB's who didn't follow their blockers. We had
a freshman WR get hit in the backside because he failed to recognize the
blitz. The most effective punt of the day was turned in by our QB? A
quarterback who has a total of 3 games of experience didn't help. A
coaching staff that is shall we say conservative in its offensive
philosophy. I think we gave it a good shot, certainly better than our last
visit. But it clearly wasn't good enough to beat this LSU bunch.

At least we didn't lose on a bad call.

At least we didn't lose on a single blown play.

At least we didn't lose at the last second.

At least we didn't lose when we were the better team.

So the underwhelming response to the game is Oh well. At least Georgia lost
too.

RE: [gatortalk] My $.02

2013-10-14 Thread Randy Platt
I don't have a quibble with anything you say but I will take a few shots at;

The pooch punt pinned LSU at their own 1 yard line was far from cowardice,
given you have an extremely raw kicker you are asking to make a 52-53 yarder
and a championship quality defense you trust more than you trust your
offense. Calculated definitely, cowardice hardly. A little humor, my
daughter, who is fairly knowledgeable about football, after watching the
play, asked what happen , so I dutifully explain the pooch punt, lineup in
standard offensive formation appearing to go for it on fourth down, the QB
kicks what is essentially a punt in an effort to pin the opposing team deep
in their own territory. The next words from my daughter came straight out
of the Longest Yard (original version) when Burt Reynold's character drop
kicks the field goal/ extra point and I think Ray Nitchski (SP?) character
ask You can do that?. My daughter is 28 years old and has watch football
with her dad most of her life, she had never seen a pooch punt. I got a
chuckle.

Time of possession is a meaningless statistic, it is result of the offense
philosophy employed by Florida, just as it is a results of the offensive
philosophy employed by Oregon. To me the comment you posted is a comment
about the football stratagem employed by Muschamp. Muschamp is old school,
play great defense, great special teams, dominate time of possession by
running the ball and avoid turnovers by passing only to facilitate the run.
That is the way this team is currently built and it is not going to change
down 14 - 3 at the half. The problem with the stratagem is that it requires
the team to play almost flawlessly as the stratagem is not designed to play
catch-up from very far behind. Nobody thought the stratagem was boring when
we beat LSU 14 - 6, it was but nobody cared because we won. The question is
can Muschamp build a championship caliber program, fortunately or
unfortunately, as compared to Spurrier's run, in a time frame acceptable to
the powers that be using this stratagem, time will tell. Say what you want
but Florida scores a touchdown instead of settling on a 27 yard field goal,
the defense holds, then our final drive, the one that ended on a fourth and
27 from the LSU 37, is first and 10 at the LSU 10 down 14 - 10. Score,
defense holds again and Florida wins 17 - 10. Again very little margin for
error and on Saturday Florida made to many. Personally, I can respect the
current stratagem, but I would prefer to see a more robust passing game.
Having said that I am not sure we can employ a more robust passing game
unless we get better play form our offensive tackles against quality
defensive opponents.

I think Murphy did a very good job considering the breakdowns on offense.
I am still a believer in our coaches and think the Gators are going to be
really good, at some point. It is like Spurrier, when he was being
bullheaded about putting Danny into the shotgun, I think the coaches need to
understand what Gainesville Sun's Dooley states below and adjust..IMNSHO!

Dooley, I know what Will Muschamp is trying to do offensively and it does
work against lesser teams. But in the last five big games Florida has
played, the Gators are 1-4 and have averaged 13.5 points in those losses.
The offense can't be completely changed but there needs to be some major
tweaking. Losing is bad, but losing and being boring is worse.

Other things that I have read:

Pooch punt on 4th down at the LSU 35? Cowardice!

Gator fans are extremely critical about Muschamp's penchant to dominate time
of possession. Here was one of the better comments: Nobody ever succeeded
by chewing up clock when they were behind by 2 or more scores. It's bad
enough to sit on a lead. To sit on your opponent's lead is unfathomable.

Go Gators!

[gatortalk] Gator / Dodgers

2013-10-14 Thread Tom Clarke
Well, enough about the LSU game. I think Muschamp will have them ready for
Mizzou this Sat.

Are there any more Gator / Dodger fans out there? LA looked good tonight
Cardinals still lead 2-1
