It was hinted at in late August.

Here is an example:

Quarterback John Brantley met with reporters prior to Wednesday’s
practice, which will be half-pads. He was the only one.

Here are some notes from what they said:

– If injuries force C Mike Pouncey to start at tackle and back-up
Sam Robey steps in at center, Brantley is comfortable with that. He
said has taken snaps from Robey in practice the past two years and
added that Florida has not had any issues with snap handling during
the pre-season.

Then Robey bursts the bursa in his right elbow, and we see this

UF offensive line coming together

With Florida's top two left offensive tackles out of the opener with
injuries, there was speculation earlier in the week that a reshuffled
line would see standout center Mike Pouncey moving to tackle. But
Pouncey is staying put.

I take from this exchange that Robey would have started last Saturday
but for his elbow injury, and find it strange that his injury status
has never been disclosed. Instead, the press releases have steered
the rationale for Pouncey back at Center by focusing on the benefit
of putting Wilson on the field as opposed to the possibility that we
may not really have a choice right now.

Like I said in a previous post, my choice for the starting 5 OL are
Nixon/Patchen, Johnson, Robey, Pouncey, Gilbert. Even when Pouncey made a
good snap, I thought the OL struggle, Hurt and Halapio were unimpressive on
the right side. Getting Nixon and Johnson back this week should stabilize
that problem. Based on that, the question will be is Pouncey at center,
Hurt at guard better than Robey at center Pouncey at guard. While I believe
the coaches would move Pouncey back to guard and put Robey in at center, I
think they will give Pouncey one more shot at center. I suspect , however,
that it will be a short leash.

Given that his identical twin has played center, probably back to the Pee Wee
football days, I suspect that Pouncey had never played Center until this spring.

Bob Griese kept commenting that he was playing the position like a Guard,
pulling before he had finished the snap. That makes sense - the guy has been a
Guard for probably 15 years.

While I admire the idea of sliding Pouncey over given his identical twin's
success at the position, I think that it is an experiment that has failed.

To be frank, I think that the coaches realized that it had failed a few weeks
ago, when they indicated that they were sliding Pouncey back to Guard. Robey
then injures his right elbow (you could see it wrapped during the game), and
Pouncey is put back at center.

The question that ought to be asked by reporters is why Robey is not on the
injury list and what is his prognosis. Can he play with pain? Does he risk
further injury by playing?

Re: Re: [gatortalk] Observations

2010-09-06 Thread Steve McKibben
Wow!

Even though we had tickets, I couldn't go to the game on Saturday. My son's
soccer team, as well as one that I coach from the same club, had a soccer
tournament in Sarasota. I was out of the hotel by 8AM each day, and not back
until after 9PM.

Leslie went to the game and spent time with, our son Shane (he opted out of
continuing with the marching band this year). We had agreed to exchange scoring
text updates - who would have guessed that I'd be sending more of them?

She did let me know about the fumbles and pitiful yardage totals, and by the
end of my very long day I think I was convinced that I'd picked a good game to
miss!

Last night was the first time since Friday afternoon that I had the time and
energy to log on to the computer. I could feel the angst while reading all of
the real time and post game posts. I haven't decided when or if I will watch
the replay.

My thoughts:

I don't read too much into first game results, good or bad, BUT

13 yards at haltime? Seriously? I have to admit that concerns me.

Miami of Ohio had a terrible record last year, but there may have been
extenuating circumstances that contributed to that, and I don't know how
competitive they were in their losses. They may or may not be better than FAMU,
San Jose St., Stony Brook,Samford, etc., but we certainly didn't enjoy the easy
win many of our rivals did this past weekend.

*IF* the debacle was just a perfect storm of bad luck (injuries, unprecedented
center snap troubles, etc) the bad win may be better for our team's focus
going forward than an easy win would have been.

Bottom line for me - I feel as though this is opening day II coming up this
coming Saturday. I have no idea if we're a good, mediocre, or bad team.

Stay tuned...

There were lots of correctable mistakes. No better, no worse.

RE: [gatortalk] Observations

2010-09-05 Thread Charlie
I didn't see that way Oliver, I saw the defenders hand come in as the ball
arrived. In one the articles posted on Gatornews Larry Vettel said Deonte
reverted back to his old ways of letting the ball come in to his body
instead of extending his arms. Apparently the coaches have been trying to
correct that.

I saw Larry Vettel's comments too. I think that was certainly unfair. Deonte
caught several after that and made one exceptional catch, if I remember

Re: [gatortalk] Observations

2010-09-05 Thread Scott Lucas
Deonte was being lazy. He didn't go get that ball, he waited for it to drop
into his hands. If he goes up to get it, the defender would not have been in a
position to grab his arm. Maybe it was interference, but the real problem was
pure laziness.

Yeah, Charlie...I was painfully reminded of the lng Zook years.
I watched the UT v UTMartin game last night on PPV (don't ask why) and for a
team that is starting 2/3's with little or no experience in college ball AND
a new coach...they looked pretty good. My thoughts went to two weeks from
now and if we don't correct some of those mistakes..we're in trouble cause
believe me, it will be LOUD in Neyland Stadium. And if Brantley/Pouncey
can't get it right when there's very little noise (as was the case when
Florida Field was half empty by 4th quarter) they'll never be able to pull
it off on the 18th. I'm keeping the faith, tho and believing in this team!!
Not so sure about Addazio and what's-his-name defensive coordinator.

RE: [gatortalk] Observations

2010-09-05 Thread Randy Platt
Hi is name is Teryl Austin. Just for the record in my book this performance
is directly attributable to, if we are looking for a scapegoat, Urban Meyer.
When Addazio wanted to shift Pouncey out to tackle last week, obviously the
coaching staff knew Carl Johnson (Johnson played some tackle as a freshman)
wasn't going to play, it was Meyer who was quoted as saying he wanted
Pouncey to remain at center to insure a quality exchange between the center
and the quarterback. Ooops! Now I believe Meyer doesn't want to undermine
his senior leader, so Pouncey will probably start at center against USF,
although I wouldn't be surprised if they made the switch to Robey during
this week. However, I would say that Pouncey only has one or two more
botched snaps left in him before he goes back to being a guard. He will not
be the center at UT if this continues. The timing of this offense is
predicated on a clean snap from center, absent a clean snap, we could have
Tebow, Emmitt, Wes Chandler, Percy Harvin with Shanahan calling the plays
and we would look just as inept as we did yesterday. So Meyer needs to be
credited with this one. I have always said that UF head coaches are
required annually during the season to take their stupid pill, I hoping
Meyer consumed his for this season on Saturday.

I considered going out and doing something else by the time the second half
rolled around. I think that's the first time since the Zook years I've
 considered that.

All we heard in the off season is how the offensive line is our strength.
How Addazzio is moving them around in case someone gets hurt. These guys
are saying moving to other positions is no big deal - because they all know
(and have trained at) each position. They have at least eight guys ready to
go. Nixon's and Patchan's injuries are not serious and only out a couple of
days. I think it was Carl Johnson commented opponents better just come and
take their whippin,

What I am pissed about is - being told one thing - not being able to see for
myself (or have trained reporters report on it) - and then seeing something
else that is drastically different. What we saw yesterday is NOTHING like
what they were telling us to expect. We were sold an NFL caliber OL. What
we saw - was not as good as most high schools.

Let's contrast that with the DL. We were told all summer that our DL
(especially Des) would be bad, we wouldn't be able to pressure the QB, etc.
I saw the opposite. Granted it was Miami of Ohio - but for the first outing
they looked much better than advertised.

I thought the DL played like the OL was advertised and the OL played like

My reasoning for this lineup is that you are replacing just one starter
(Maurkice Pouncey with Sam Robey) not 5 new starters by position like
Saturday. If you want to scream at Addazio as line coach I'm good with
that. His OC game plan was about what I expected, spread the ball around to
the potential playmakers and see what develops.

Also I would point out that strength of team never should be interpreted to
mean that they are any good, it usually just media speak for they are the
most experienced unit

And they told us the Titanic wouldn't sink and that the '69 Jets had no
chance at beating the Baltimore Colts. Sorry you are so bitterly
disappointed that a bunch people misled you. I doubt there was anyone more
disappointed than Addazio or Meyer who I am sure as they ran out the tunnel
to start the game believed that the offensive line would block or the
center could snap. However, I will be glad to send an email over the
Florida SID and request that all further communications regarding team
potential be characterized in the worst possible way so that we only have
good surprises when the team exceeds expectations. All I can tell you is
that just because people think something doesn't make it so. By that I mean
do you really believe that Addazio and Meyer would have started Pouncey at
center had they known what Saturday's performance would be.

Their exact quote was - they were not going to move Pouncey to a position
other than center - because - they did not want it to look like the bad news
bears. I wasn't exactly thinking bad news bears - I was thinking
keystone kops or Chinese fire drill

Instead - why don't send an email over to the Florida SID office stating -
either let reporters in to practice so they can do their job - or fire
themselves for being so misleading and inaccurate?

I thought the DL played like the OL was advertised and the OL played like
the DL was advertised.

Thanks, Randy, for the name of the defensive coordinator...couldn't, for the
life of me, remember the name :-) And, I agree, coaching is 99% of all
mistakes made on the field. We must remember there were quite a few
18/19-year-old freshmen out there yesterday. I'm just gonna keep every part
of my anatomy crossed in hopes the mistakes can be coached out of them by
next Saturday!!

Hi is name is Teryl Austin. Just for the record in my book this
performance
is directly attributable to, if we are looking for a scapegoat, Urban
Meyer.
When Addazio wanted to shift Pouncey out to tackle last week, obviously
the
coaching staff knew Carl Johnson (Johnson played some tackle as a
freshman)

wasn't going to play, it was Meyer who was quoted as saying he wanted
Pouncey to remain at center to insure a quality exchange between the
center
and the quarterback. Ooops! Now I believe Meyer doesn't want to
undermine

his senior leader, so Pouncey will probably start at center against USF,
although I wouldn't be surprised if they made the switch to Robey during
this week. However, I would say that Pouncey only has one or two more
botched snaps left in him before he goes back to being a guard. He will
not

be the center at UT if this continues.

Yeah, Charlie...I was painfully reminded of the lng Zook
years.
I watched the UT v UTMartin game last night on PPV (don't ask why) and for
a

team that is starting 2/3's with little or no experience in college ball
AND

a new coach...they looked pretty good.
I'm keeping the faith, tho and believing in this
team!!

Not so sure about Addazio and what's-his-name defensive coordinator.

rolled around. I think that's the first time since the Zook years I've

1) Thompson dropped a pass

2) Moore dropped a pass

3) Demps fumbled

4) Rainey fumbled

5) Moody dropped a pitch and contributed to a botched hand handoff

6) Pouncey rolled at least a half dozen snaps, another half dozen were no
more than ankle high, remarkably I don't remember a single snap going
over

the QB's head but that would have been par for the course.

7) So much for our playmakers and veteran leadership

8) Single worst performance by a center in my 30 years of watching Gator
football

9) Single worse offensive performance since Lynn Amadee was the OC

10) Miami must really stink if we played this badly and still won

11) You really can beat someone by throwing you jock strap on the field

12) Almost all of our offensive woes were directly attributable to the
play
of the offensive line

13) The only time the offensive line, as a unit, carried out their
assignments correctly the play went for a 72 yard touchdown.

14) We need Nixon and /or Patchen back in a hurry

15) WR need to improve their downfield blocking, especially Carl Moore

16) Special teams weren't

17) It is not possible to play any worse, offensively

18) It may be possible to play better

19) It was so hot, the play so bad, the TV timeouts and stoppage of play
so
draining, that I was miserable sitting in the stands, I was wishing it
was

1979 again, so I could, at least, drink myself into a coma
