g_b MAIYTRA 2010
See attached note from Ajit Joshi. I think this is a very welcoming initiative by Indian organizations in US. LGBT community should take advantage of this opportunity. Thanks, Sameer - I recently contacted the MAIYTRA 2010 organizing committee to see if they would welcome LGBT folk. The responses I got were nothing but positive. They are extremely welcoming and ethusiastic about ensuring that not only are we wecome, but that we have a robust presence. If you are in DC July 4th weekend, have no plans for that weekend and want to make a visit to the nation's capitol, please consider this event. You don't need to speak Marathi to attend. You can come by yourself, or if you have a partner, bring him/her along. Please take a look at the email below welcoming the LGBT community to join. - Ajit Joshi -- Forwarded message -- From: Vijay Paradkar vi...@maiytra.com Date: Sat, Jun 5, 2010 at 12:57 PM Subject: MAIYTRA 2010 Convention welcomes ALL young adults! To: Ajit Joshi ajitvjo...@gmail.com I’d like to extend a personal invitation, on behalf of our entire staff, to attend the MAIYTRA convention in Washington, DC from July 2-5, 2010. MAIYTRA is a community of young adults (ages 18-35+) throughout North America and abroad with a strong interest in celebrating and preserving Marathi culture. In the past, MAIYTRA conventions have been held in various cities, but have largely been focused towards the needs of twenty-something singles looking for a serious relationship or marriage, but this year we're changing that. Our staff has worked tirelessly to create a convention that is MAIYTRA for ALL. We’re seeking to create a more inclusive and welcoming community that celebrates the full range of backgrounds, experiences, and choices that encompass our generation. A big part of that is creating a safe and comfortable environment for everyone who cares about Indian culture (and Marathi culture more specifically) to be their true selves, and not merely what is normally expected of them. Not everyone chooses to take the typical educational sequence. Not everyone chooses to pursue a traditional career in one of the commonly ‘acceptable’ industries for Indian-Americans. Not everyone chooses to have a traditional relationship or follow the accepted timeline for such things. And in the past, we believe that too often the Indian community has sometimes turned away from or marginalized those that make different choices. Moreover, many young adults who feel compelled to follow the ‘norms’ end up less fulfilled or happy than they could be and ought to be. MAIYTRA 2010 aims to celebrate the diversity of our young adult community, and to demonstrate that while we share a common interest in preserving our rich cultural heritage, it is our multiplicity of experience that will give our community the strength and resilience to support each other and future generations in the years to come. Some of the highlights of MAIYTRA 2010 include: Daytime programs including cultural programs, classes, workshops, discussions on relationships, and quarterlife challenges, seminars on religion and comparative mythology, and much more! Professional opportunities, including a networking happy hour and recruiting event, our new mentorship program, an entrepreneurship seminar, and traditional and alternate career panels! Variety in nightlife options (clubbing, lounge, sports bar, pub trivia, and more) since we all prefer to unwind in different ways, culminating in our 4th of July blowout banquet, dance, and casino night: Casino Royale! A stronger emphasis on social and community activism, including a panel on Opportunities in Development, and a social service project during the convention! Discover DC during the 4th of July with our Spy Hunt, guided tours, and Taste of DC! MAIYTRAConnect, our new online social and professional network exclusively for our attendees! We’re planning to include a discussion on the South Asian American LGBT experience, how it is perceived or ignored by the community-at-large and the impact that reaction has on cultural identity. We need more volunteers for this, so please register and let us know if you want to help! If we see interest in sufficient numbers, we’re also hoping to create LGBT speed dating or group icebreakers to coincide with our other singles events on Saturday and Sunday. We also have couples activities, for the first time ever, so you and your partner are welcome. Please consider attending MAIYTRA 2010 and visit our website. You or your partner do NOT have to be Marathi to attend, merely interested in Indian and Marathi culture! We hope to see you in July! Online registration closes soon, so please don’t wait to sign up! I am writing to this list hoping that some of you might have ventured on this path (wedding - the Indian way !!) and might have found some interesting tidbits to share. I think I am looking for in general some tips, suggestions, resources for gay Indian wedding. We are based in US. Please share your thoughts or other information that you might have on this topic. Today's (Friday Feb 12) episode featured homosexuality and had Bindumadhav Khire. I saw the show with my parents and both of them listened to it very calmly and positively. Mainly because Renuka didn't refer to homosexuality as 'it' and because the person looked/acted/ talked in a drastically different manner than what they had seen in 'Kal ho naa ho' and other movies. It was an hour-long show. It was a brilliant episode overall - considering the fact that a 'household name'/'ideal daughter-in- law' Renuka Shahane was associated with it. When my mother sulked, But this is unnatural!, I gave this long explanation. My parents both listened to me very silently. ( Whoa, they heard me out!, I thought to myself!) Congrats to Mr. Khire and a thank you to him too - for setting the ball of my coming-out rolling. :-) Regards,Aditya if you can read THIS thank a teacher
g_b Re:Another homophobic blow from Sakal
Dear All, SakaL, Pune's leading newspaper has written completely wrong, homophobic article which is full of wrong and biased information. Worst is it comes from this Dr. Rajan Bhosale who calls himself sexologist (or whatever right medical term is) and he claims how his patients whosuffer from this disease of homosexuality suffers from AIDS and sexual diseases. I live in US with my partner who is also Maharashtrian. Both of our parents who live in Pune and read SakaL told us about this article. Me and my partner have been spending time with both sets of parents educating them about right knowledge about homosexuality and were bringing them up to the speed. Now, after reading this article and especially coming from a doctor they seem to be going total crazy since they believe doctors more than anything else and it's coming from a newspaper like SakaL. It feels like all the efforts we have been doing to educate our parents have gone back to square one just with one article. Is there anyway we can write to SakaL and literally ask them for right information. I am not sure they realize their wrong information can affect people's lives. Are there any Maharashtrian (or marathi speaking and understaning) journalists from the fraternity that can help write something. All I am asking is some help on how can I get back to SakaL and especially this Bhosale guy. Any help would be appreciated. I am fuming after reading this article. Dear All, I am based in US and yesterday (Oct. 24) I saw an episode on Oprah where Manvendra Gohil (India's Gay Prince) was featured in a segment 'Gays around the world'. I think he did fantastic job of sharing his life story as well as some elements of gay life in India. Congrats to you Manavendra. I am very curious as to how did Indian media handled this? Because last time when Aishwarya was on Oprah, Indian newspapers were totally covering that news. Not sure how did the response from media was? Re: Fwd: g_b GLBT workplace issues in India Inc.
Hi Salil, Thanks for your feedback. This is very helpful. Although a milder and more friendly version of the feedback would have been appreciated, still I am taking it in positive spirit because I believe your intent was to help me. Currently I am working full time in US for a Fortune 500 company. I am founder and leader of the LGBT and Friends affinity group for my company. I am originally from Pune, India and for past 8 years based in US. I am doing an independent resaerch (independent research = not funded, not connected with any institute/organization and completely voluntary) on the topic of LGBT workplace issues in India. Often times I find literature on LGBT workplace issues in America Inc. but there is very little information available for India Inc. So I have designed this survey to seek some insight into this topic. I am also reading some internet literature on this topic. I know this is just a start but some of the findings from this survey as well as other references/articles will be shared with other professionals working in the LGBT workplace issues area in the west. This information will also be helpful for my company as we expand our LGBT initiatives to India and other parts of the globe. Hope this is helpful. Again, as Salil pointed out, I am not a pro at survey designing or getting good response to the survey. So if you have any constructive feedback, send it across. cheers, Sameer Salil [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sameer, You could have a better response if you care to introduce yourself and your survey in your emails more credibly, instead of making vague statements about how the survey shall be useful, being aggressive and admonishing people for not getting interested . Re: g_b Re: Bollywood and Gay Cinema
I completely agree with Salil's points mentioned below. Instead of getting personal it will be best if we use more lower toned language and not shut up other person (because I am sure that's not the intent of Vikram ). Everyone is not at the same comfort level accepting their sexuality. And their fears (about Sena and other issues) might be real. I guess the main purpose of this list is to create a safe platform for everyone (and not just selected few) While I appreciate all the good work Vikram and volunteers have done in Mumbai, we need to be appreciative of other's viewpoints as well. Changes can't happen overnight and even though we have made great progress in metro cities recently regarding LGBT awareness, I still believe we have long way to go. And that can only happen by education and awareness (of our own community and masses as well). By shutting down opinions of our own people we might not achieve the goal that we are trying to achieve. cheers, Sameer Salil [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Vikram, While I appreciate the other information and points of view in your mail, is it really necessary to sit in judgement over Sumeet's mail and get annoyed with it publicly - does it not run counter to the central purpose of having a safe space ? I don't see what is annoying about Sumeet's message - he uses the slang gayism - one may rant all one wants - but it happens to be slang in the indian gay community - if you had instead educated him about why its not a good idea to use the suffix ism, that would be constructive. As things stand, you end up sounding like a dowdy grammar teacher and sumeet will continue to say gayism :) Its also difficult to understand why one should be annoyed with Sumeet because he is scared of the Shiv Sena and overestimates its influence. I appreciate the hard facts you have thrown in about the Sena angle - but why get hysterical and suspect that his simple fear is a mask for a supposed mental struggle with exploring his sexuality, and worst of all, why allege that he pretends to be afraid - he may really be afraid, in which case getting annoyed is of frankly no use to anyone ! Cheers Salil Vikram [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In gay_bombay@yahoogroups.com, Sumeet Mehra [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: i Ketan! Its not about bollywood accepting gay cinema but the audience accepting it. And till there is ShivSena in maharashtra, i dont think they will allow such films to be screened. Infact i feel that people do not mind over gayism till its harmless, but Sena never will allow that. Infact everyone is aware about 14th feb. How they protest and how they treat lovers. They do not want to think beyound. They call it anti Indian Culture. According to me the culture and the society has to change with the demanding situations. We all know that India has changed its culture or else we all would be still wearing Dhoti and Kurtas instead of jeans and t-shirts. This is all double face of politics. So India accepting Gays is still a dream, to come true. But again here I dont feel that we need to beg for Gayism being accepted. Who are they to grant us permission of what we want to do. We live in so called democratic country...bus sirf naam ke liye. When we are all aware why to bang heads on the rock and break our heads. If they cant accept truth, then they are wrong and not we. I don't know what annoys me more about this message - the use of 'gayism', a word that does not exist, or the assertion that nothing openly gay is possible in Bombay at the moment because of fear of the Sena. Sumeet for your information at the moment there are two films running in theatres in Bombay which have queer characters at their centre. Capote is about an openly gay and camp man, Saving Face is about a Chinese-American family where the daughter, the central character, is openly lesbian and her affair with another woman is very openly shown (and no, its not a porn film). There hasn't been a word from the Sena. My Brother Nikhil ran for six weeks in Bombay with no protests. Other films like the ones I've mentioned, Rules: Pyar Ka Superhit Formula and Page 3 have all had openly gay characters with no objections. There have been two queer film festivals in Bombay and both GB and Humsafar regularly show gay films at private events. Plays with gay themes have been presented in Mumbai like A Muggy Night In Mumbai and Chottiyasha Suttit (in Marathi, so the Sena couldn't pretend not to understand what was going on). At a larger level, GB has been in operation for seven years, having parties, film fests and other events. Humsafar has been in operation even longer and is quite high profile and in the news. We have had press conferences on queer issues and demonstrations, the last on August 16th. All this has happened with the knowledge of the Shiv Sena - so how is your statement that no presentation of 'gayism' is possible in Bombay

g_b Workplace policies and Me
Dear All, I am pleased to let you know that recently my company achieved 100 percent score on Human Rights Campaign's (HRC) Corporate Equality Index. HRC is a US based organization and their workplace equality project scores Fortune 500 companies on their workplace equity policies for GLBT employees. (Visit www.hrc.org) My company did not have gender identity and expression included in our non discrimination policy and I worked with company management to get that incorporated into the policy. There was resistance, lack of knowledge about gender identity/expression subject but in the end I was successful. Most of the people did not know the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. As we already have sexual orientation included in our policy, management thought that should cover everything. People were not ready to include those words because they said there are no cases in the past or even today that can prove that we need to include this in our policy. After couple of back and forth emails, meetings convincing the managemnet how it makes business sense to have this policy, finally it has happened. The battle is won and the policy is changed to include gender identity and expression. For a company based in the heart of the bible belt (mid west) of America, it's a huge deal. After this whole experience, I feel like I have achieved something and made a difference to someone's life. Five years back I would have never thought that a closetted guy (from India) like me would dare to change workplace policies of a Fortune 500 company. But yes, I did it !! I personally don't go to everyone at work saying I am Gay, but I don't either hide my personal life if someone asks that question. I have pic. of me and my boyfriend at my desk and yes, it feels great to be yourself at work. Being open about myself and my identity helped me to be productive at workplace and achieve what I always wanted to achieve. I wanted to share this with all of you because I truly believe that if we decide, we can make a difference in our own as well as people's life. It takes courage to take that first step but if you don't take that first step, no one will. Wonder why this message did not appear on the list yet. Cheers, Sameer Friends, It gives me immense pleasure to write that a famous marathi poet-writer Vinda Karandikar won the Dnyanapeeth Puraskaar for this year. There will be lots of articles about him and his work in the journals for the days to come but one point worth mentioning on these lists is he has financially helped various social organizations in Maharashtra that work on projects on family planning, HIV/AIDS awareness and enunch/hizda empowerment related work. Re: g_b My Love,My Life.......an appreciation
Dear Mahesh, It is beautiful to read the life that you share. And it is a precious thing that you have been blessed with. Perhaps the most precious thing one could ever ask for. Someone who will be with you, no matter what. Perhaps, that is why we have vows of till death do us part. Perhaps you have been touched by that love which eludes the ordinary. What has happened is extraordinary, and is like a light that shines for others who feel like you. Keep this light burning. May both of you be there for each other, through storms, through the peaceful calm of life. You'll must be thinking its quite understandable that everyone feels the same for his partner, then what makes HIM so very special to me?Well there are innumerable reasons but this one is worth appreciating! Last week I hurried back from my college without bothering about my patients(I happen to be a health professional) and was just dying to go home and crash! I travel from New mumbai to CST.I was boiling with feverI could feel the heat radiating out of my bodyI was hyperventilating, feeling extremely nauseous.I somehow managed to drag on till Kurla.I called HIM up from Vashi ,I guess and had told him to reach Wadala.I had a massive emesis(puking) before Wadala. This further added to my energy loss and made me dehydrated.I took a cab at Wadala and reached a nearby hospital for help.I had told the people there to take care of my mobile and direct HIM to come here. I was lying there trying not to fall unconcious till I see HIM.I was in a state of delirium. Finally HE came and lifted me up and put me in a cab and took me to his house.I had several episodes of emesis and had a blasting headache. On reaching home he got a local Physician. The doctor concluded that I would be suffering from MALARIA FALCIPARUM(most dreadful and fatal one).after my blood reports came it was confirmed! I was on injectable drugs and had not eaten anything in the past 16 -18 hours. He cooked hot and a blandKhichdi for me.He fed me like a baby and put me to sleep. He kept taking my temperature throuoghout the night,I bet he had hardly slept.Next morning I happened to pass urine in about 24 hours,I was not able to move a inch.He did the needful.Later he sponged me,got me fresh clothes. He saw to it that I am as comfortable as possible .As i started feeling better I used to order him (I hate myself) and ask him to make whatever I wanted to eat or do.This man never even made a face.He also saw to it that I wasnt getting bored and got some movie for entertainment. Re: g_b Re: I Wonder ?
I disagree with Vikram as well on this point as I met my boyfriend through internet and we have been together for last 2 years already. I must admit that the most wonderful gay friends I have met are online and I am still in touch with them. I think there is no one place where you can find guys for relationships. You just have to make sure you tell what you are lkg for.Vikram [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You're mostly finding people on the Net who are only interested in sex because the Net is where most people just go for sex. You wouldn't look for fish in the vegetable market, so why not try to find the guys you're looking for in the right place? And that sure isn't online? Look, most people go to the Net because it's perfect for anonymous encounters, so people who want that will get that. But try coming to meetings, parties, film screenings of the kind organised by Gaybombay or Humsafar and you will meet people in person and those are more likely to result in relationships. In the seven years its been in existence Gaybombay has facilitated many long term relationships, including my own, which was one of the first. But I'm pretty sure all these happened at real life meetings, not over the Net. So stop looking for what the Net is unlikely to give and try coming to a real world meeting where you might get what you want, Vikram===i disagree with vikram. it is not black and white as vikram is making it out to be. there are many decent ppl who use the net to meet ppl for friendship/love/realtionship . of course there are those who seek sex. but then this happens in gb paries/meeting as well.. there are some who come to enjoy or make friends and then there are those who come for finding a buddy for quick casual sex. to label either the internet or even the parties/meets one way or the other would not be a fair assesmentregardsmoderator===--- In gay_bombay@yahoogroups.com, "handsome_redfort" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've been chatting on net for the last 5 month... meet many guys on net. Re: g_b Re: an early brush with sexual experience turned me gay
stud_ of bombay shared his experiences of early brush with sexual experiences with a guy. I wonder in how many cases this happens and guys turn gay. I mean it is a well known fact that some % of guys can become gay because of this (someone in their family doing crazy stuff when they are kids) but is it true for each gay person. I don't think so. I have gay friends from various countries of the world(that's the advantage of living in US) and they had perfect childhood just like me or anyone else, and attraction for men came very naturally to them just like it came naturally to me. So my point is such instances should not be taken as a general rule that all gays had gone through such experiences in their childhood and that turned them gay. We already have such a low self esteem among lot of us and such stories does not help to boost your self esteem. Cheers, Sameer Yahoo! Re: g_b Being gay without being deceitful
Geoffrey, Thanks for sharing your story. I myself am very comfortable with my sexuality and has decided not to marry a woman and ruin her life just to please my parents. You story make me feel right on my decision and boost my confidence. Thanks for being brave and sharing the truth about your life with us. I hope other guys who are married and living a double life can share their experiences, not as how their life is miserable but share what are the facts of a double life so that gay guys can think twice before getting married and ruin another girl and her family's life. Re: g_b why are we gay?
I completely disagree with Prasanth's view that we chose to like men over women and if we decide then we can start liking men. Prasant can you make similar statement for heterosexuals? I wonder. For me personally, I always had attraction for men and I did not grow up in a over powering parents' house. My parents were loving, caring and always encouraged to take risks and be brave in life. So I do not buy his point on parenting. I hope there is healthy discussion on nature vs. nurture on this forum based on personal experiences. I totally agree and believe why we are gay is because of genetics just in the same way whu mysister is straight- because of genetics. Cheers, Sameerprasanth kumar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi I don't think being gay is because GOD wanted us to be like this or because we are born gay. It is more to do with parenting, upbringing and circumstances. Psychological factors also affect a person to become a gay or straight. If your parents are over protective and shield you from the big bad world , there is every chance that you develop female tendencies of being soft and timid. Your carving to become the macho man could further your desire to have a man.I think it is all in the mind. If a person really desires to change his orientation, he is more likely to succeed if he really wants to. It is all about being confortable with one's sexuality. If I choose to like men than women, it is my choice and I making this choice not because I was born that way or GOD made me. It is purely because I choose to be one due to factors affecting my upbringing, circumstances and emotions. Yahoo! India Matrimony: Find your partner now. Yahoo! Recently read vichaar.org site and found that Fame Gurukul has gay contestants. Read the first article on the same. There is a big debate going on with lot of hatred posts from straight community. Apparantly someone who has a gay brother is trying to put the gay people's side to the story. Very interesting to read. I am gonna put my thoughts on the same. Feel free to post your views as well. Re: g_b Commitments....are they so difficult?
Mahesh, You raised very good question. I myself used to wonder a lot on this topic. I think societal accepatnce helps to build relationships and makes the commitment stronger. Heterosexuals have social infrastructure in place that allows them to get married, hold each other's hands in public, make love, be affectionate with each other freely in society. Small things like this, are a privilege to homosexual/queer community. Not having this social infrastructure in place, social rituals that will honor and celebrate your love for one another makes commitment/union a dream. Having said this Ialso think that an individual also has responsibility to make a relationship work or be committed to only one person. In absence of these social aids that I talked earlier, this might be tough but never impossible task. That's why we see rarely but unique gay/lesbian couples together for so many years. I and my boyfriend are lucky to have friends who have been together in committed relationships for 5/10/15 years. Seeing something like this definitely gives you confidence that you yourself will also have such a lasting relationship. Just my two paise :) Cheers, Sameermahesh patil [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Being very proud to be Gay, I have always wondered...Are commitments really so difficult in the Gay world? I am always reffered to as a " baccha" by my friends which keep telling me that "strong" gay relationships are a rare sight and very transient...But then I think of Samir and Dibs, they have been together for 14 years... Dont you think that in a way we ourselves are responsible for not having good strong relationships? We are ready to be friends, ever ready to share beds but when it comes to commiting...why do we back out? I really dont understand why do we hesitate to say that "yes I shall be there for you and only you" Having friends is different but having a loving partner who would entirely be yours is such a divine feeling, isnt it? Re: Re: g_b Marathi Movies - A Treat in itselves.......... Read add your views.
Hi Vivek, I agree with your comment of Umbartha movie. I think they should have done more research before putting the dialogue that these issues can be solved with psychiatric help, which is indeed a sad part. I wish new directors like Sunil Sukathankar, Sumitra Bhave handle homosexuality topic through their movies. They seem to address lot of social issues with great sensitivity. By the way, for those marathi readers, there is a very good book on lesbian topic called He Dookh Kunya Janmache by Mangala Athalekar (Rajhans Prakashan). The book introduces the topic about homosexuality and has interviews from lesbians around Pune and Mumbai. I thought that was a good start and am planning to use this book as one of my marathi literature resource while coming out to my folks when they will visit me in US. I am nervous :) Anyway, keep them coming, Sameer Vivek R Anand [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Sameer, Umbartha is one of my most favourite films and i considered it as Smita Patils most flawless performance and not to forget the memorable music and songs like Chand Maatla and Soonya Soonya Mehfileet maajha Umbartha not just had a lesbian scene it had a complete lesbian angle in the story and the love angle was handled sensitively. Smita does fight the discrimination but also if you remember in her fighting discrimination she tells the authorities that Such things do happen and can be treated with pshyciatric help which was rather sad. The film came from the likes of Dr. Jabbar Patel and had Smita and Girish karnad. I wonder at that time ( and believe me i grew up in 70's and they were bold times with bold themes ) if anyone in the team actually gave it a thought before incorporating such a dialogue in the film. Marathi cinema has given us some more memorable films like Paathlaag ( remade as Mera Saaya in Hindi )Vahinichya Bangdya' ( remade as Bhabhi ki choodiyan in hindi) Jait re Jait. There was this wonderful comedy about three thieves who take shelter in a simple villagers home and how their simplicity changes all of them. The film also had the great song ughad daar devaa aata..ughad daar deva let me know if you remember the name of the movie. Re: g_b Marathi Movies - A Treat in itselves.......... Read add your views.
Sahil and others, I am also a big time fan of marathi language and literature. I do enjoy watching some marathi movies but not many. I LOVED ashi hi banava banavi movie very much. Sachin, lakshya, sushant and ashok saraf are great in this movie. I recently purchased couple of marathi vcd's from India. Shyamachi aai, umbaratha, samana are worth watching. Umbartha is one movie worth mentioning as it has a lesbian shot and issue handled in it. Smita Patil fights with the discrimination with lesbian couple in the jail. I thought that was a daring step to even address the issue for that time (1980-81) in a marathi movie. I would request others on this list to share movies from their own native languages which are worth watching. India has such a good diversity of languages and cultures and I wish to enjoy these from other languages as well. If those movies have subtitles in English we all can enjoy them. g_b Indian Idol
Dear Friends, I am very curious how no discussions have happened on this forum about indian Idol show on sony TV. I am based in US, but watched couple of episodes in India in Dec. and was totally hooked to it. I am sure others like me enjoyed the first season of it and looking forwrad for second season. Any gossips, any news about any of the participants in the show. personally I loved Rahul Vaidya and Amit tandon looks wise and Abhijit Sawant for his voice. I thought Sony did a great job of marketing and packaging of the show to become it popular. If any of you are involved in making of this show, do share your experiencesConsidering gays have lot of artistic talents I am sure some members of this group must be involved with the show in one way or the other Cheers, Sameer Yahoo! Re: g_b A Good Read!
C K Prahlad is very well know personality in Corporate America with his work in Corporate strategy and leadership. I have read some of his articles on the same topic that you have mentioned Smartie in my MBA class and he makes really great arguments about serving the world's poor profitably. I would highly recommend his reading. Cheers, Sameer Smarter boy Boy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All A book given to me as gift was fascinating in its theory and the possibilities it unfolds. Dr C K Prahalad's Fortune at the bottom of the pyramid. He tries to argue that the vast populace in the underdeveloped world is a huge market potential to multinationals also provided they innovate and come out with products and processes which provide value at the price these markets can afford. He argues that this is possible and quotes the live examples of such experiments and successful ones in India and South America mainly Brazil. As he is arguing for multinationals to enter and gain from this market he gives prominence to examples of HLL and ITC - Wheel detergent, sachets and e-choupal of ITC (to make the farmer know the market for his produce before venturing out to sell). ICICI bank's ability to project itself has made their Self Help Group effort borrowed from Bank of Madura and developed essentially to achieve prority sector targets as a pioneering effort on micro financing while the credit for that lies in Bangladesh and later in NABARD for copying it. SBI has more SHGs than ICICI but as he is concentrating on private sector attempt at poverty alleviation it does not matter. What I felt bad about the whole exercise was not giving as much prominence to the Amul experiment as it deserves especially when it literally transformed the fortunes of the nation through its milk revolution. Again co-operatives are not multinationals. But what is commendable about the book is the writing style and the arguments to make MNCs see this as a great busines opportunity with the help of NGOs by building up new markets altogether and then emulating that experience elsewhere to create newer ones. Will be of interest to Jagan and others who are into microfinancing in a big way to get private sector initiatives into this vast area which will also make political sense and not cause characters like Chandrababu Naidu to be sidelined as urban biased before they could take forward the e revolution to rural areas in a big way. Happy Reading. The case studies portion is yet to be read. The book also carries CD on some case studies. A brand new experience for me who is accustomed to old time academics. Smartie Yahoo! Re: g_b Booker Prize for a gay novel
Sameer, Thanks for sharing this article from Hindustan Times, Lucknow. It's encouraging to see some Indian press writing about this stuff. I heard this award news first in US and then I was curious how my hometown newspaper (SakaL- marathi publication from Pune)gives out this news. And I was shocked when they didn't even mention that this novel is about a gay person. They just mentioned that the novel is about a youth lost in money, politics and drugs. There was no mention about homosexuality, gay- anything. The news was merely 4 lines long. Isn't it a shame when newspapers don't portray the real news and selectively publish the stuff. I found SakaL to be very conservative and I am not sure if there is a forum where we can fight such kind of discrimination. I in fact have written a marathi article on growing up in Pune and have snet it to esakal.com net editors and the net editors refused to publish it (inspite of my constant attempts, so I finally gave up). g_b NDTV Program: Is Homosexuality out of Closet in India
Hi All, Just watched a recorded tape of NDTV's recent debate on Is Homosexuality out of Closet in India. I think it was a very good discussion and my heartiest congratulations to Ashok, Geeta, Anjali and Suhel Seth. I think the Father who represented the conservative view was very hyprocritical, but all of you did a great job of representing our community and our concerns. I wish more of such debates happen in India. I myself work in US in Diversity management area and I am responsible for Diversity training for our India location. I am going to have this debate viewed by my trainers in India-if they haven't seen it (it's located in Pune.)Currently we don't have sexual orientation as one of the topic in our Diversity training in India, but with this debate I think my trainers will get more sensitivity about the subject. [gay_bombay] Coming Out resources
Dear All, I am seeking some help from the group. I am originally from India but now living in US for last 5 years. I am planning to come out to my parents who are living in Pune, India. I am already out to my younger sister and she is comfortable with my sexuality although she is not in favor of me coming out to my parents. But I no more can handle questions from them about my marriage and I think they deserve to know the truth. So...to make it a short story, here are some things which I am seeking help from the group on: 1) Any Indian literature (preferrably in Marathi, Hindi) which talks about homosexuality in a positive way. 2) Any gay friendly doctor/psychologist who can educate them about this topic (instead of curing me) (preferrably in Pune as I know they would want me to seek a doctor once they come to know.) 3)Any other parents in Pune or Mumbai area who have gone through similar situation and are positive about the whole thing. I realized my parents have lot of influence from someone who is from their own age group- so may be they might be able to get more perspective about this from someone who has gone through the similar phase. 4) Any other tips on coming out (shall I do it by phone/email/one on one), or in presence of my sister and other family members. Or any damn thing which you think had helped you in your coming out process. Let's hope for the best as I get ready to take this big step in my life. I know there is going to be lot of emotions, crying and all that drama involved but I know one thing that I love my parents and they love me to death, so in the end it will be all cool :) Anyway, Happy Ganesh Chaturthi to everyoneI miss India during ganapati festival...:) Cheers and thanks for listeningI love this web community Sameer ___ Do you Yahoo!?
