GB celebrates Holi at Juhu Beach on Monday, 1 March 2010 Time: 11:30 am onwards Meeting Point: The Shivaji statue near The Ramada Inn Palm Grove untill 12:00 Noon The statue is just off the main beach. For those who have never experienced Holi on Juhu beach get set for a wild and fun-filled day. Juhu beach has always been a favourite destination for Mumbai-ites on Holi. The sea turns a deep shade of red that morning as gulal-smeared young men throw off their clothes and plunge into the waters in huge numbers. Look for a bunch of guys at least one of whom will be wearing a GB T-shirt. If you are late look for us on the beach and in the water nearby! GB, as a support group, has created this comfort/safe space for gays. Many people at the event may be newbies (those still coming to terms with their sexuality and/or those who have mustered the courage to come to such an event for the first time). This is in line with our other special meetings which have tackled subjects like safe sex, STDs, depression in the community, legal issues facing the community, long term relationships in the community and, of course, our most popular ones, the parents' meets. In this series financial planning may seem a bit of an odd choice: why should gay and lesbian people need to think about financial planning more than other people? Well perhaps it's the 'living in the moment' thing: for every queer person who has carefully planned their investments there seem to be many more who haven't even started thinking about them. Or perhaps it's the lack of having someone else to plan with: even most straight people usually don't think of financial planning until they're married and have kids. Whatever the reasons financial planning is a must and if you haven't started doing it then all the more reason to come to this point. The discussion for this meet will be lead by Bala who's an ace at taking a practical approach to financial planning: how to do it properly, covering all bases, and without it necessarily taking up all your time and energy. -- Why Financial planning ? Well, it's just like Safe SEX. You don't like hearing about it, thinking about it or having to practise it. But you really have no choice. So don't say its not for ME! Or I am too young to bother about this! Well, sorry, but like SAFE SEX there are no exclusions. It's vital for your own protection and the well-being of the people you love. The bottom line is you just have to do it. So all those questions you never wanted to bother about ... 1) Do I need Insurance? How much? Why do they have so many types to confuse me? Anyways my credit card comes with insurance..? 2) I need to have a house of my own. How do I plan for that? Let's be practical: not all of us are lucky enough to get them as gifts. What did Mr.Minwalla do with the truck driver? Can you have sex with a buffalo's nostril? And what does any of this have to do with you? For answers to these questions come to Flared Like a Trumpet: a talk on the history and use of S.377 of the Indian Penal Code to criminalise homosexuals, by Alok Gupta at the GB meet this Sunday, 25th Feb at Zouk, Andheri. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code hovers like an uncertain threat over the queer community in India. We know its there and we know it might be a problem, but we're not sure how its been used in the past and how it could be used in the future. Alok has been researching the history of Section 377 and some of his work was recently published in the Economic and Political Weekly. That article was posted online, but for those who didn't have time to read it, Alok will be talking about his work this Sunday. And if you think this is going to be a serious and depressing talk, well, think again. A lot of the cases are bizarre, even funny (at least for us now) and Alok uses them to keep the talk fun and engaging. His talk has been very well received at several conferences, most recently the World Social Forum in Kenya, not before time, so we've asked him to do it for us now. After the talk we can have a more general discussion on the topic and Alok will take QAs on his work. So if you have thoughts or queries on Section 377 and what it means for queer people in India this is the chance to bring them up. (The only thing we won't be talking about is the current case in the Delhi High Court since that's still going on). THE VACCINATION DRIVE! The time for the vaccinations will be from 6 - 7pm. NO LATER THAN THAT! Hepatitis-B is a serious and potentially fatal disease that is spread, among other means, through sexual contact. For people leading an active sexual life it can be as serious a threat as HIV - except that for Hepatitis-B there is now an effective vaccine. GB is offering FREE innoculation against Hepatitis-B. If you do this at a regular clinic it could cost you around Rs 500 or even more for a shot. The reason for this is that each dose of vaccine is meant for about 10 people and once it is opened it has to be used at once. We are keeping our costs down by getting the vaccine at a special price and by innoculating many people at once. So this is a really good opportunity. Please note that if you take this vaccination now you will have to get booster shots at certain intervals later. The vaccine will be administered by an experienced and highly qualified doctor. He will also be making a presentation on Sexually Transmitted Diseases. For those who have already been vaccinated through GB earlier, If you would rather get the innoculation done elsewhere, that is perfectly fine, as long as it is done within the last week of February. And this time we're doing it with southern spice! Here's the menu: Paruppu Isili (a beans dish), Rasam, Irupuli Kuzhambu (a sour veg dish), Rice Pachadi (raita). These cooking meets are such fun that its easy to forget they have a practical purpose but they do. Learning how to cook is pretty essential for gay men if they plan on leaving home and setting up home for themselves. Of course, some of us may be hoping to find that wonderful guy who's great in bed and in the kitchen - but what if you find someone who's expecting you to be that guy?! As always we'll be meeting at someone's house where one or two people will demonstrate a few basic dishes. Everyone will be expected to pitch in with chopping and cooking and at the end we eat it all! This time a friend from Chennai who's an excellent cook will be doing most of the demonstrations so you can expect a south Indian feast. Our only regret with this meet is that we can't keep it open to unlimited numbers. Because there's only that many people who can fit in the kitchen for the demo to make any sense so we have to restrict the numbers to around 20. The GayBombay Picnic to Elephanta Caves on Sunday 4 February 2007! -- GB Dates History Again - The Elephanta Caves! Two years after visiting Kanheri Caves GB is going to date history again when it takes a stroll way back into 5th Century CE when the Elephanta Caves were carved out. Our very own historian Shailen is down here from Oxford to tell us everything about the caves and make the experience come truly alive. That's not all as, apart from the academic sounding stuff, there's fun too! Some of the short treks around the Elephanta Island offer breathtaking views of Mumbai City and Harbour, Butchers Island, Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva and the most-guarded Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. But to beat it all is the 45-minute ferry ride across Mumbai Harbour. -- Schedule: We shall assemble at the Wellington Bunder at Gateway of India at 8:30 am to embark on the 9:00 am ferry. This 45-minute journey across the Mumbai harbour will take us to Elephanta Island. Here a toy train awaits us that shall take us to the foot of the caves. On our return we shall embark on the 5:00 pm ferry to arrive at Gateway by 5:45 pm. Cost: Rs. 350 per head which includes: 1. To and fro ferry charges to Elephanta Island. 2. Gharapuri Village Panchayat Tourist Tax. 3. Archaeological Survey Of India's Entry Charges to the Caves. 4. Toy Train Ride from Jetty to the foot of the caves and back. 5. Two years after visiting Kanheri Caves GB is going to date history again when it takes a stroll way back into 5th Century CE when the Elephanta Caves were carved out. Our very own historian Shailen is down here from Oxford to tell us everything about the caves and make the experience come truly alive. That's not all as, apart from the academic sounding stuff, there's fun too! Some of the short treks around the Elephanta Island offer breathtaking views of Mumbai City and Harbour, Butchers Island, Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva and the most-guarded Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. But to beat it all is the 45-minute ferry ride across Mumbai Harbour. -- Schedule: We shall assemble at the Wellington Bunder at Gateway of India at 8:30 am to embark on the 9:00 am ferry. This 45-minute journey across the Mumbai harbour will take us to Elephanta Island. Here a toy train awaits us that shall take us to the foot of the caves. On our return we shall embark on the 5:00 pm ferry to arrive at Gateway by 5:45 pm. Cost: Rs. 350 per head which includes: 1. To and fro ferry charges to Elephanta Island. 2. At this time of the year the breezes are strong and the weather is pleasant enough for people to spend all day flying kites from their rooftops. Go to Bhuleshwar, one of the older districts in Bombay, and you'll find the streets full of makeshift kite shops and the skies full of kites. In particular people fly kites on Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra and Utraan in Gujarat. It symbolises the begining of the Sun's journey towards the northern hemisphere. This year Makar Sankranti falls on Sunday 14 January and, for the sixth time, Gaybombay will be celebrating it! Everyone who came last year can tell you what a blast we had; after we finished flying the kites we looked for other means to have fun on Juhu beach (and this usually means food!). Kite flying is a delicate thing: it's all about the skill at handling the wind, knowing how to handle the manja (the thread), when to let it go slack and when to pull abruptly. In particular people fly kites on Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra and Utraan in Gujarat. It symbolises the begining of the Sun's journey towards the northern hemisphere. This year Makar Sankranti falls on Saturday 14 January and, for the fifth time, Gaybombay will be celebrating it by flying kites on the following Sunday. Everyone who came last year can tell you what a blast we had; after we finished flying the kites we looked for other means to have fun on Juhu beach. Kite flying is a delicate thing: it's all about the skill at handling the wind, knowing how to handle the manja (the thread), when to let it go slack and when to pull abruptly. Many people are wondering how Karma intends to handle the New Year crowd. GB has had a comfortable party there in the past when the number of people attending was 390. Keeping the comfort of revellers in mind the Karma management has made available to us the banquet room, adjoining the main pub, which is centrally air-conditioned. This room is larger than the pub. This room will be the lounge where partygoers can sit and relax. This room will have a full-service bar and dinner will be served here. Starters will be served in both areas. The speakers in this room will be connected to the main DJ console in the pub; the volume of the music here will be played at a lower level. Partygoers, therefore, will have a choice: to dance with the crowd in the main pub or relax (and even dance) in the comfortable lounge. The general consensus is that about 450 persons will be able to move comfortably within the two areas. So, COME EARLY! ~~ The GayBombay Sunday Meet on 20 November 2005! ~~ GB turns sporty and goes to the Bowling Alley! GB, as everyone knows, is always looking for innovative new ways to bring the community together. This week, we've planned a whole new kind of event - we're going bowling! So get ready to flex your wrists and knock out those nine pins. And don't worry if you've never bowled before. It's a game where beginners have all the luck and frequently win! ~~~ Place: Fun Republic Multiplex Cinema, Andheri (West). (Directions: Tell the auto driver to take you to 'Laxmi Industrial Estate'; Fun Republic is on the right just before Fame Adlabs which is on the left). Time: 5:30 pm We'll meet at the steps of Fun Republic and go in at 6 pm. Look out for a bunch of cute guys, one of whom will have a gb/black cap on. The cost for this event will be on actuals but we're working out a deal with Fun Republic for a 10% discount on their normal weekend rates, with a round of Pepsi thrown in. Keep going straight for about two minutes; you will see the big blue signboard of 'JUST AROUND THE CORNER' on the left. If you are coming from Linking Road take the very next left turn from the first petrol pump which leads to the Flying Machine Store. On driving down the crossing of two lanes you will see a huge blue coloured board with JUST AROUND THE CORNER written onto it.
