Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Fineract 0.6.0 (incubating)

2017-01-11 Thread Nazeer Shaik
Hi John,

Thank you for reviewing this release.

1) I have kept https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FINERACT-357 open as
we have addressed 4 out of 6 suggestions given for 0.5.0-incubating
release. Other two will be addressed in next/future releases. I have added
these details in note section of current release email.

2) You need to follow the build instructions mentioned in the readme.md
file to build from source. We have mentioned these details on every release.

*Build & RAT verification steps can be found at:*

https://github.com/apache/incubator-fineract/blob/0.6.0-incubating/README.md
or refer 'README.md' in *apache-fineract-0.6.0-incubating-src.tar.gz*

Please let us know if you are still not able to build after following these
steps.

Re: [VOTE] Release Gossip version gossip-0.1.1-incubating (RC2)

2017-01-11 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

+1 binding

I checked:
- name includes incubating
- disclaimer exists
- notice good (but year last year - please update in next release)
- all source files have ASF header
- no binary files in release
- can compile from source

Next time could you please:
- Place the artefacts for voting on in [1] that way they can be released with
an svn mv command.
- Can you sign the artifact with an apache email address rather than
edlinuxg...@gmail.com.

README without a license header is fine IMO [1] but no harm in including one
either.

Thanks,
Justin

Dependancies are often seen as external so perhaps “all items contained in or
depended upon by the project” would be better?

IP Clearance terms

2017-01-11 Thread Henri Yandell
It was pointed out on legal-discuss@ that the IP Clearance terms in
http://incubator.apache.org/ip-clearance/ip-clearance-template.html are
odd. Namely the two items:

---
* Check and make sure that for all items included with the distribution
that is not under the Apache license, we have the right to combine with
Apache-licensed code and redistribute.

* Check and make sure that all items depended upon by the project is
covered by one or more of the following approved licenses: Apache, BSD,
Artistic, MIT/X, MIT/W3C, MPL 1.1, or something with essentially the same
terms.

It's odd to call out the licenses specifically (with MPL 1.1 seeming a
little odd-one-out), and the two lines are (in spirit) saying the same
thing.

What do folk think to replacing both with:

 * Check and make sure that all items depended upon by the project are
compatible with the license guidance given here:
http://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html

Thanks,

Hen

Re: [DISCUSS] Hammock to incubate at the ASF as Apache Hammock (incubating)

2017-01-11 Thread larry mccay
Hi John -

I do remain interested in this microservices framework and think it is a
great addition.

I am +1 (non-binding) on seeing this accepted into the incubator!
I would like to point out a couple observations:

1. I think that the proposal fails to communicate the simplicity of the
intended programming model as well as it could. I found another description
a bit more helpful from an external article [1]. I assume it oversimplifies
things and understates or omits the pluggability aspects but from a
programming model perspective I got a bit more from it. I feel the proposal
is more CDI centric which probably fits the project's original purpose but
is should maybe be more of an implementation detail with the ease of the
programming model being central moving forward.

"Hammock is a framework for
bootstrapping CDI, launching a web server and deploying REST APIs. It is
made available through Maven Central and can be added to a project as a
dependency. There is a specific MicroProfile
distribution which
gives a basic application structure including the requisite dependencies to
run Hammock. These include a Servlet Container (Undertow
), a JAX-RS runtime (Apache CXF
), a JSON-B library (Apache Johnzon
) and a CDI runtime (Weld
).

>From there it is relatively simple to start a running container, and from
there building REST endpoints. There are helpful Hammock-specific MicroProfile
samples to get
started with."

2. While looking for more details on the intended programming model, I
stumbled upon another hammock project for microservices [2].

thanks,

John,

Thanks for going over that.

As for the readme. that is in place to display on github. I do not see
others putting the licence here. I will place it at the bottom if that is
acceptable.

https://github.com/apache/hive

There is no WAR artifact. I coped that line as boilerplate

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Fineract 0.6.0 (incubating)

2017-01-11 Thread John D. Ament
Nazeer,

Sorry but -1. There was a ticket raised to address release issues in the
prior release vote. The IPMC typically looks to see those release issue
tickets reolved in the following release.

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FINERACT-357 was not resolved in this
release.

Can you explain why not?

I still struggle to figure out how to build fineract. In fact, the
build.sh script still does not work.

Few notes:

- Add license to README.md (you have it on .travis.yml so why not?)
- The use of RELEASE creates a potentially not-repeatable build for apache
parent.
- More than the listed test failed:

Failed tests:
  ShutdownDeadtimeTest.DeadNodesDoNotComeAliveAgain:103 ComparisonFailure
expected:<1[6]> but was:<1[1]>
  StartupSettingsTest.testUsingSettingsFile:68 » Runtime
java.net.BindException:...
  TenNodeThreeSeedTest.test:44->abc:78 » Runtime java.net.BindException:
Address...
  TenNodeThreeSeedTest.testAgain:49->abc:78 » Runtime
java.net.BindException: Ad...

- Your email notes that a WAR exists in
https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachegossip-1002/org/apache/gossip/gossip/0.1.1-incubating/
but
I could find no such WAR.
- While its OK for the staged release vote to use nexus, your final source
distribution must be on
- Gossip's download page is out of compliance (sort of). Specifically you
should not link to github on your downloads page.
