Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache SDAP (Incubating) as a Top Level Project

2024-03-07 Thread Lewis John McGibbney
Julien’s has very succinctly described the community growth challenges and
podling direction. For a number of years I acted as mentor for SDAP and was
puzzled by the inability for the community to push releases. This still
concerns me...

That being said, there is definitely potential (the software is being used) and
I do feel that SDAP should graduate.

Please carry my +1 through to a VOTE.

Thanks, and congratulations to the SDAP community… and a HUGE thanks for Julien
as well.

Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache SDAP (Incubating) as a Top Level Project

2024-02-29 Thread Riley Kuttruff
Thanks! I joined the SDAP project a couple years ago, so I had to ask around as
to why we waited so long to start making releases.

Basically, when SDAP entered incubation, it was already in a production state
in support of NASA Sea Level Change Portal, and most of the initial efforts
were geared toward getting different types of science data to work with SDAP &
infusing it with other projects. It was only more recently that we began making
larger-scale changes to the core software to necessitate a release.
Furthermore, Julian joining the project as a mentor was immensely helpful as he
helped guide us through the proper release process and stressed its importance
for an Apache project's maturity.

Since our first official release at the start of 2023, we've been making a
serious effort to get new releases out in a timely, regular manner.

I hope I've addressed your question adequately. If not, let me know.

Hi, Riley Kuttruff

Thank you very much to the SDAP PPMC for maintaining this project!

Three releases (one ongoing) in seven years seems a bit sparse from my
perspective. Is there a reason for this? Is SDAP inherently stable, designed
for infrequent updates? Or are SDAP's users not expected to update often?

2024-02-28 Thread Riley Kuttruff
Thanks. We're still working on the GPL issue. While it's not a part of the
source (nor, do I believe, is any GPL-licensed software used by SDAP), it is
still being installed somewhere in the build process.

And I agree, Julian has given us an immense amount of time and help, for which
we are extremely grateful!

If you could solve this problem and release a version, my vote would
be +1. By the way, Julian, as the sole active mentor of SDAP, has put
in a lot of effort for this project. I believe this project will
become an excellent TLP.

Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache SDAP (Incubating) as a Top Level Project

2024-02-26 Thread Julian Hyde
I joined SDAP as a mentor in late 2022, having seen Stepheny Perez's
talk at ApacheCon. What I saw was a project that has been doing good
work for a number of years but needed a little push to get them to
graduation.

Many of their contributors work for NASA JPL, an environment that is
at the intersection between academia and the space program. The
environment is a mixed blessing; there are so many talented
individuals with specialist knowledge that there is a continuous
temptation for them to look inwards. Since I have joined, they have
worked hard to comply with ASF's expectations of a project (regular
releases, up to date website, decisions made on list, and openness to
new contributors). Nga, Riley, and Stepheny especially have worked to
turn the project around, and make it outward-facing and open.

I recommend that the Incubator PMC members vote for SDAP's graduation.

Thank you for finding those issues. I've updated the site (sdap.a.o shows the
changes but sdap.i.a.o still hasn't updated at the time I'm writing this). I
believe I've the issues you've found. Please let me know if this is not the

Thank you very much. We have actually found an issue with that release (GPL

candidate. It seems we have forgotten to cancel that vote.
