After reading Craig's report on Sanselan, I think there might be some integration possibilities with it. Maybe Craig and Noel could help with the "open positions" required for the project proposal. Re: photo gallery software (previously called Caitrin)
Right now the project lacks a Champion and Mentors and I don't want to call for a vote before having those. The proposal is also not as well written as it should be because it lacks a lot of detail. However, as Noel mentioned we are going to move the architecture discussions to the projects@ list so that we can hammer out the rest of the details and get a better proposal without flooding the general@ list. With regards to process, what is still missing that is preventing Angela to call a vote to get the project accepted into Incubation ? As I said, the "codeless project" stuff was merely my understanding, whether it's based on actual facts or not I have no idea. Sorry, I saw Noel's comment about there being many codebases and thought he was party proposing this project (I'm pretty sure Noel's a committer :). So, perhaps start this project somewhere else first (get some code) and bring it to the incubator then. I didn't think the incubator was for codeless projects (my perception only and I have absolutely no documentation to support that :). Is there somewhere that I can take a look at the code? Would you mind if it were drawn from for a new project? Everyone has great ideas and it looks like this software could showcase how to use the different Apache projects together to create something new. I will update the proposal with the Sling and Tuscany ideas. If anyone else has ideas, please throw them out there. In order to be considered, the project would still need a champion and 3 mentors. And, the proposal needs to answer any questions that exist. What other questions are there? I now I am missing things. Its looking like if we glue together a whole bunch of existing Apache and Incubator projects that we won't have a whole lot of code to actually write. :-) That all by itself can be a challenge. All doubts on Sling have gone out the window. I will update the proposal accordingly. I don't mind the idea of working with the Sling project at all. I am most interested in the problem space. For the moment I will continue updating the proposal. Even if it doesn't become its very own project, having the proposal written will still provide a good road map as we start to move the project forward. Sling should make it very easy to create photo gallery software, the JCR repository observation feature for example, makes it easy to "listen" for incoming files and process them, to generate thumbnails or alternate renderings. And the WebDAV interface is very convenient to drop files into the JCR repository. Sling's RESTful scripting and/or servlets should also make it easy to provide a REST interface on the photo gallery. Docs and examples for Sling are quite thin at the moment, but a photo gallery would be a good example indeed, and Sling is looking for more contributors. If you're willing to give it a shot over there, we'll do our best to put you on the right track. -Bertrand (Sling committer) - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My only question is whether or not we lose anything from that decision, but if I didn't think that the JCR was the right way to go, I wouldn't have brought it up. I don't think we loose anything. If I am reading the spec correctly for the JCR, we actually gain. Instead of dictating the storage mechanism we can easily give a choice. We can give a default storage mechanism (I would say the filesystem because everyone already has it) but if someone wants to replace that with a database or anything else they can. We gain a lot of flexibility that allows the application to be small and compact for a personal application, but the scalability that will make it a viable enterprise option. > I just haven't figured out how Sling may play into that RESTful interface and ready-made framework for building applications that use the project, perhaps even substantial parts of the project, itself? +1, if you are convinced that a RESTful interface is the way to go. I am mostly convinced it is a good way to go because there are large portions of the project that are already done if we go that way. As with your question above: do we lose anything by going with a RESTful interface? I haven't thought of anything and since I can't disprove it Angie - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sling is a frontend to the JCR, so that would seem to follow without consequence. --- Noel - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: photo gallery software (previously called Caitrin)
These are all great suggestions. Of course, I have my favorites but I am interested in seeing what others who may be interested have to say. I have also updated the proposal a bit. Any ideas would be great to hear! I am convinced that Jackrabbit is the direction to go for the mid-tier of the application. I just haven't figured out how Sling may play into that and what that means for the actual storage mechanism. Does anyone from the Sling project have any thoughts on this? Re: photo gallery software (previously called Caitrin)
There has been a lot of going back and forth. Originally there seemed to be little interest at the Incubator so I was talking to the Roller folks. There is some interest over there but a disagreement on how to write the code. At the same time there started to be interest at the Incubator again and the idea is starting to take hold. Then I got really busy... Now I need to start re-working on the proposal since other discussions have taken place and the idea is becoming more formed. As for the front end, the current idea is to expose the data held in the repository as a Web service. I would be more than happy to see a Flex front end built that is a client to the Web service. Personally, I would like to see an AJAX front end, but I know that some people dislike the lack of security around AJAX. I like Hans' suggestions for the name as well. If there are other ideas for a name, feel free to throw them out there. I would like to find something that is interesting, yet allows someone to easily determine what the project is. That is proving to be a big challenge. I'm a little confused, because the wiki says that the proposal is being put on hold and that the goal is to work with the Roller community. http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/CaitrinProposal Nevertheless, if there's interest in building a Flex front end, let me know... -- Martin Cooper On Tue, Jun 24, 2008 at 11:09 AM, Angela Cymbalak <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi All, > > I haven't forgotten about wanting to create an open source Photo Gallery > and there has been some sporadic interest as I have discussed it. A proposed solution (thanks Noel for the path > suggestion) would be PhosLibrarius I don't think the new name is much better! Who knows what "Phos" is? Vietnamese noodle soup? ;) (Btw, mix of Greek and Latin is cumbersome. Perhaps "LuxLibrarius" or "PhosBiblioteka" or some derivation ("LibraLux") thereof could be better?)
