[gentoo-user] Radeon 9600 XT not supported in Gentoo?

2004-01-26 Thread Jernej Zidar
Today I received a new Radeon 9600 XT graphic card. Before I had a GF4 MX
440. The framebuffer worked flawlessly (1024*768*32), after the change the
framebuffer doesn't work anymore.

I use lilo with the string vga=792. I tried with vga=0x318 + append=
video=vesa:ywrap, mtrr. but all I got was an empty (blank) screen, the
system was booting I was able to login and reboot the system.

I tried to enable the ATI specific options but the problem persisted.

the vga=normal option works. I use 2.4.22 kernel with some ck patches.

Could someone please advsie me as what to do/try?

thanks guys,
JZidar

I definitely would give a try to 2.6x but the ltmodem driver doesn't
compile. yes, I'm still using dialup. Actually I tested the 2.6.1 kernel
with my old graphic card and I was impressed by the speed of the boot-up.

thx 4 the tip

Compiling the modules by calling vmware-config.pl gives the following

 Is vmware compatible with 2.6.1?

[gentoo-user] Framebuffer issue in 2.6.1

2004-01-09 Thread Jernej Zidar
Hello everybody!
I decided to give a try to the new 2.6.1 kernel. It was released as
stable just a few days ago. As far as I have tried it so far it feels much
more faster than the 2.4.22 I was using before, however there's an issue I'm
not able to overcome.

In 2.4.22 I used a framebuffer (I hope this is the right term) console (no X
Co.) the size 1024*768 with 32 bpp colors. In 2.6.1 I'm not able to get
it. I use this setting in lilo: vga=792. If I boot 2.6.1 with this options
nothing shows on the screen, although the system boots normally. If I set
the line to vga=normal the new kernel boots normally.

The system log shows that there's a difference in mapping the memory. The
old kernel maps it to address 0xf880b000, while the new one maps it to
0xf880.

Is this a kernel issue or a specific setting to be passed to lilo at boot
time?

thanks for any advice,
JZidar

Hello,
the logs were the right ones, but after some man reading I found out
that there are two debug options, namely debug and debug2, the latter one
proved to be the right choice, because it showed that Cups is missing a
shared library that comes with Gimp print drivers. I emerged that and Voila!
the printer is printing; tested with elinks, Opera and Kate.

Thanks Daniel and Michael!

 Hi,

The logs you have shown do not show that you have tried to print anything.
Please confirm that this is the same file that you pasted from before, and
also that you have changed the LogLevel.
You should expect to find a hell of a lot of output in the logs when you
print
 something when loglevel=debug.

 Daniel.

It's simple. First you must emerge ltmodem and then you must configure your
dial-up connection. The device you'll usee will be called /dev/modem.

For Gnome I don't know, in KDE you could us kppp (that's in the kdenetwork
package).

In kernel 2.6 you should just re-emerge the ltmodem package again.

was found, others mentioned the same problem. I just tried 2.4.23
and it also does not work. Since there is an exploit now I have to
figure out a way to upgrade, so I am still seeking solutions if anyone
has heard of any. Maybe the 2.6 kernel fixes the problem?

Works fine for me on my 2.4.22 (+some CK patches). Did you enable devfs? It
didn't work until I did that.

Re: [gentoo-user] Where is boot.log

2003-11-27 Thread Jernej Zidar
It's in /var/log/messages.

Alternatively you can try issuing the command: dmesg | less or dmesg | grep
Failed. The latter will output you only the lines withe the word Failed in
it, while the first command will output you everything that happened during
the last boot process page by page.

 Hi folks,

During booting Gentoo 1.4 I saw some errors relating to

 Failed to load sg mod
 Failed to load sr mod

 snd emu10k1 fails
 etc.

I tried to find the exact errors from 'boot.log but could not locate
the latter. Kindly advise where 'boot.log is located or it has another
 name.

 Thanks in advance.

[gentoo-user] OT: Dell Latitude D500

2003-11-17 Thread Jernej Zidar
Hi Gentoo users!
I'm thinking of buying a Dell laptop, model Latitude D500. As a Gentoo
user I plan to install Gentoo on it.
I would like to hear any user's experience with this laptop and Gentoo.
Are there any problems with setting the various components ( modem, s-video
port, etc.)?

Thanks for the feedback.

It is as simple as plugging each end of the crossover cable into each
computer's network
card. Then, assign both of them an IP address, probably 192.168.0.1 and
192.168.0.2, but
you can use whatever you want. Keep in mind that a crossover cable is not
the same as a
regular CAT5 patch cable. Its a special cable that has a few wires crossed
at one end.

Every time I do an 'emerge sync' I get the following error message:

** Skipping packages. Run 'fixpackages' or set it in FEATURES to fix
 the
tbz2's in the packages directory. Note: This can take a very long
 time.

So I run 'fixpackages' and sure enough it fixes stuff. And sure enough
 it takes a *long* time!

This has happened a few times now. On every occasion the I get the
 following error messages:

!!! Cannot update binary: Destination exists.
 !!! sys-apps/raidtools-1.00.3-r1 - sys-fs/raidtools-1.00.3-r1
..!!! Cannot update binary: Destination exists.
 !!! app-admin/dosfstools-2.8-r3 - sys-fs/dosfstools-2.8-r3

I plan to unmerge then emerge both these ebuilds in an attempt to stop
this problem in the future. Is this the right course of action, or is
there a better way to solve this problem.

 Cheers

[gentoo-user] Bus error

2003-11-03 Thread Jernej Zidar

I'm trying to get the program Charmm to work. On a
debian install it works flawlessly if you provide some lib files.

If I do the same on Gentoo I get: Bus
Error.

I tried changing the kernel configuration (I
enabled Unix86pty and stuff), copying the various debian libs to Gentoo but to
no avail.

Does anyone have any experience with this program
on this particular linux flavor?

thanks,
Jernej

2003-11-03 Thread Jernej Zidar
no, you must first isntall the kernel, reboot and later on compile the
Lucent Winmodem drivers. The best way to load it is to use modprobe.

I use a Lucent Winmodem, and have a tarball of the source code for the
drivers. I can get the modem to work most of the time. What I need to be
able to do is compile modules and install them using 'insmod' before I can
use the modem. Is this possible to do in a Stage 1 install? Will it let me
insert modules?

Re: [gentoo-user] Restoring Windows MBR

2003-10-25 Thread Jernej Zidar
For XP the simplest way is to boot the system from the WindowsXP cd to the
Rescue Console (or something like that), choose your partition (the program
usually finds it automagically), type in the administrator password (if any)
and then type: fixmbr

Tried and tested.

 Remove dual boot

You need to replace the master boot record. Boot your computer with your
XP
startup disk and go into rescue mode. You want to access the command line
interface. At the prompt, type FDISK /MBR (without quotes). This will
 replace your master boot record.

That does NOT work on XP (and possibly Win2K). It will only work on
Win95/98/ME. For XP, it's much more convoluted...

 This MS KB article,

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315679Product=winxp,
says WARNING: Do not use the fdisk /mbr command from the Windows Me/98
Startup disk or the fixmbr command in the Windows XP Recovery Console.
These commands will destroy your drive overlay Master Boot Record
 information...

You need to use the Recovery Console to access the tools to fix this. This
article, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314058, explains how to get
there and has details on the commands available.

[gentoo-user] CFLAGS stuff

Hi all.

I have two questions regarding CFLAGS:

1. Is there a list of all CFLAGS that can be set?

2. Is there a list of recommended CLAGS for a P4 desktop system?

My aim is to make my system as fast as possible and not make it unbootable.

Thanks.
