[gentoo-user] Radeon 9600 XT not supported in Gentoo?
Today I received a new Radeon 9600 XT graphic card. Before I had a GF4 MX 440. The framebuffer worked flawlessly (1024*768*32), after the change the framebuffer doesn't work anymore. I use lilo with the string vga=792. I tried with vga=0x318 + append= video=vesa:ywrap, mtrr. but all I got was an empty (blank) screen, the system was booting I was able to login and reboot the system. I tried to enable the ATI specific options but the problem persisted. the vga=normal option works. I use 2.4.22 kernel with some ck patches. Could someone please advsie me as what to do/try? thanks guys, JZidar - - - Linux: Be-Root, Windows: Re-Boot -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

I definitely would give a try to 2.6x but the ltmodem driver doesn't compile. yes, I'm still using dialup. Actually I tested the 2.6.1 kernel with my old graphic card and I was impressed by the speed of the boot-up. thx 4 the tip JZidar - Original Message - From: Dennis Freise [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, January 26, 2004 7:07 PM Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Radeon 9600 XT not supported in Gentoo? -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

[gentoo-user] Framebuffer issue in 2.6.1
Hello everybody! I decided to give a try to the new 2.6.1 kernel. It was released as stable just a few days ago. As far as I have tried it so far it feels much more faster than the 2.4.22 I was using before, however there's an issue I'm not able to overcome. In 2.4.22 I used a framebuffer (I hope this is the right term) console (no X Co.) the size 1024*768 with 32 bpp colors. In 2.6.1 I'm not able to get it. I use this setting in lilo: vga=792. If I boot 2.6.1 with this options nothing shows on the screen, although the system boots normally. If I set the line to vga=normal the new kernel boots normally. The system log shows that there's a difference in mapping the memory. The old kernel maps it to address 0xf880b000, while the new one maps it to 0xf880. Is this a kernel issue or a specific setting to be passed to lilo at boot time? thanks for any advice, JZidar -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

I've done what you told me, but the printer is still not printing in Cups (though if I pipe something to /dev/usb/lp0 it works; eg ls -dev-usb-lp0). At the bottom I attach the output of error_log. Hello, the logs were the right ones, but after some man reading I found out that there are two debug options, namely debug and debug2, the latter one proved to be the right choice, because it showed that Cups is missing a shared library that comes with Gimp print drivers. It's simple. First you must emerge ltmodem and then you must configure your dial-up connection. The device you'll usee will be called /dev/modem. For Gnome I don't know, in KDE you could us kppp (that's in the kdenetwork package). In kernel 2.6 you should just re-emerge the ltmodem package again. I'm trying to get the program Charmm to work. On a debian install it works flawlessly if you provide some lib files. If I do the same on Gentoo I get: Bus Error. I tried changing the kernel configuration (I enabled Unix86pty and stuff), copying the various debian libs to Gentoo but to no avail. Does anyone have any experience with this program on this particular linux flavor? thanks, Jernej
Re: [gentoo-user] Stage 1 install /w Lucent Winmodem
no, you must first isntall the kernel, reboot and later on compile the Lucent Winmodem drivers. The best way to load it is to use modprobe. Zee - Original Message - From: Joey Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 8:02 PM Subject: [gentoo-user] Stage 1 install /w Lucent Winmodem I use a Lucent Winmodem, and have a tarball of the source code for the drivers. I can get the modem to work most of the time. What I need to be able to do is compile modules and install them using 'insmod' before I can use the modem. Is this possible to do in a Stage 1 install? Will it let me insert modules? -- __ Sign-up for your own personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup CareerBuilder.com has over 400,000 jobs. Re: [gentoo-user] Restoring Windows MBR
For XP the simplest way is to boot the system from the WindowsXP cd to the Rescue Console (or something like that), choose your partition (the program usually finds it automagically), type in the administrator password (if any) and then type: fixmbr Tried and tested. Zee - Original Message - From: Hall Stevenson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 2:41 PM Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Restoring Windows MBR At 11:38 PM 10/23/2003, you wrote: Remove dual boot Anthony in Annandale, N.J., had a laptop with Windows XP and Linux. He uninstalled Linux, but he still gets the option menu at boot. How can he get rid of the menu? You need to replace the master boot record. Boot your computer with your XP startup disk and go into rescue mode. You want to access the command line interface. At the prompt, type FDISK /MBR (without quotes). This will replace your master boot record. That does NOT work on XP (and possibly Win2K). It will only work on Win95/98/ME. For XP, it's much more convoluted... This MS KB article, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315679Product=winxp, says WARNING: Do not use the fdisk /mbr command from the Windows Me/98 Startup disk or the fixmbr command in the Windows XP Recovery Console. These commands will destroy your drive overlay Master Boot Record information... You need to use the Recovery Console to access the tools to fix this. This article, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314058, explains how to get there and has details on the commands available. Hall -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
[gentoo-user] CFLAGS stuff
Hi all. I have two questions regarding CFLAGS: 1. Is there a list of all CFLAGS that can be set? 2. Is there a list of recommended CLAGS for a P4 desktop system? My aim is to make my system as fast as possible and not make it unbootable. Thanks. Jernej Zidar -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
