[gentoo-user] Gnome Character Encoding

2003-11-28 Thread Joel Wright
Hi guys,

Having a real problem with epiphany/evolution. I can't seem to work out
how to set the default character encoding to ISO-8859-1. The default I
get gives me loads of weird characters that look like little boxes with
4 letters/numbers inside.

Any tips on how to fix this would be great,
Cheers,
Joel.

(Manually setting the character encoding to ISO-8859-1 solves the
problem)

You could try flashing the bios of the card to the corresponding pc

flashing the bios of a graphics card can be dangerous, and I can't

RE: [gentoo-user] Desktop session frozen..

2003-11-04 Thread Joel Wright
Hi

As far as I'm aware this is not true (since runlevels 3,4 and 5 are all
the same in gentoo). The only way to avoid booting into kdm is to either
change the value of DISPLAYMANAGER in /etc/rc.conf to something else
(gdm or xdm or ome of the new e managers) or to remove xdm from the
default runlevel

rc-update del xdm default

as root

changing the runlevel from 5 to 3 only stops X loading on RedHat and
RedHat derived linux distros.

Have Fun,
Joel.

This is the last thin emerge does (and I've used --verbose to get as
much information as possible). The problem is, I have no idea what this
means, much less how to fix it.

Re: [gentoo-user] spam problem

2003-10-07 Thread Joel Wright
Spamassassin (package is a good option. Seems to deal with my spam
problems adequately. I only say adequately as it does seem to miss the
occasional spam message, and label some non-spam messages (such as the
slashdot mailing list) as spam, but overall is a decent solution.

Instructions on setting spamassassin up as an evolution filter are
available online, (and is rather easy).

Hope that helps,

Re: [gentoo-user] Problem with nvidia

2003-07-09 Thread Joel Wright
Hi,

These pages have reference bioses for most nvidia cards up to the
geforce4: http://bunny.xs4all.nl/hardware/vid_nvidia.html,
http://www.nvplanet.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=listarticles&secid=2

The tools used to test/flash the bioses (vgabios/nvflash) require you to
be in DOS (so you may need to download a DOS boot disk). This MUST BE
DOS and not a dos box in windows (or a dos emulator in linux!!).

This page provides information on the flashing procedure (and loads of
links): http://www.tweak3d.net/faq/faq.html#hw:gef:flash:nvflashhow

Hope they help,
Good luck,
Joel.

Re: [gentoo-user] Problem with nvidia

2003-07-09 Thread Joel Wright
Hi,

The only suggestion I can make is to flash your bios to the nvidia
default. I realise this can be a bit worrying, but so long as you save
your original bios and have a pci gfx card to use in the event of
something going wrong, there's no reason you wont be able to return to
your current state.

I had this problem for months with a geforce3 Ti500, i spent ages
changing kernel options, module options, and main bios settings until I
finally got fed up and flashed my bios. This changed my X startup times
from ~5mins to ~2secs.

Good Luck.

Hotkeys allows you to map extra keys to useful actions, and has a number of

Good Luck,

Re: [gentoo-user] qt compiles fail

2003-03-08 Thread Joel Wright
Turns out this was a known bug!

I had to remove gtk+ mozilla pango and freetype, then clean up after them and
reinstall. Did this, and everything now seems to work fine.

Thanks for all the help
Joel.

2003-03-06 Thread Joel Wright
Okay, turns out libxft was the problem, i removed it and can now compile qt
apps happily again.

But what I want to know is what package installed libxft as a dependency in
the first place? (i.e. have I now broken something).

Still, at least I can upgrade my system again :)

Joel.

Cheers to all those who offered help & advice, especially to Paul de Vrieze
who pointed me to the problem in my config.log.

Yeah, I made a point of re-installing qt after the gcc upgrade. I really have
no idea what's going on now - been banging my head against this for 3 days
now.

You could always recreate the digest file for the package using

ebuild linux-wlan-ng-0.2.0.ebuild digest

from the folder in /usr/portage that it lives in

make sure the dowloaded file's okay first though eh?!

[gentoo-user] qt compiles fail

2003-03-05 Thread Joel Wright
HELP!! - I can no longer compile any apps which use qt

the ./configure's always fails telling me :

checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.1 (20021021)) (library qt-mt)
not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

!!! ERROR: kde-base/arts-1.1.0 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_compile, Line 112, Exitcode 1
!!! died running ./configure, kde_src_compile:configure

always the same error regardless of package (apart from the package name
obviously!).. :(

now I KNOW that qt3.1.0-r2 is installed okay because I have re-emerged it
succesfully several times, asnd have checked that libqt-mt.so* is in
/usr/qt/3/lib/

WHAT IS GOING ON!!!

and more importantly - how the hell do i fix it?!?!

I've searched the forum and can find no solution to this problem, and well as
trawled my way through the last months worth of mailing list - nothing!

info :- qt = 3.1.0, gcc = 3.2.2

Cheers for any advice,
Joel.

Re: [gentoo-user] Problem upgrading kdelibs

2003-03-05 Thread Joel Wright
As I said, I have gcc3.2.2 and qt3.1.1 installed. qt3.1.1seems to live in
/usr/qt/3/lib (i never had a version of qt prior to 3.1.0 installed).

i have re-emerged qt3.1.1 and still have the same problems.

I really am not sure what's going on here!!!

still no joy, and I can't find anything to help me!!

[gentoo-user] Problem upgrading kdelibs

2003-03-05 Thread Joel Wright
Hi guys,

Really got a problem here. Trying to upgrade my Gentoo (1.4 stable) box, and
it fails trying to update kdelibs. It says it can't find the qt-mt library
(which is in /usr/qt/3/lib - I checked). Any help trying to solve this
problem would be greatly appreciated. Here are the relevant outputs:

$ sudo emerge kdelibs
Password:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) kde-base/kdelibs-3.1-r2 to /
..
..
..
checking for libjpeg... -ljpeg
checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.1 (20021021)) (library qt-mt)
not found. Please check your installation!
For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log.
Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!

!!! ERROR: kde-base/kdelibs-3.1-r2 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_compile, Line 112, Exitcode 1
!!! died running ./configure, kde_src_compile:configure

My gcc version is 3.2.2, and qt is 3.1.1(-r2).

Cheers,
Joel.
