[gentoo-user] 2004.0 ISO image confusion
Hi, I am a bit confused by the new ISO images that come with the 2004.0 release. I am planning a stage1 installation of GENTOO 2004.0 on an AthlonXP box [1] and would like to know if the packages-athlon-xp-2004.0.iso ISO image is bootable or if it not and contains GRP binary packages and install-x86-minimal-2004.0.iso is the bootable one. [gentoo-user] Copying existing installation to new harddrive
I set up a GENTOO box for a friend of mine (it's his first Linux experience and he is really happy with it) recently. The box in question has a rather old, small and slow harddrive that he wants to exchange in the near future. Is it possible, and if so, how, to copy the existing GENTOO installation to the new harddrive? [gentoo-user] Using a USB Network Adapter
Hi, I have a T-Sinus 130 data USB / Wireless LAN 802.11b network adapter attached to my desktop box. One of the remaining issues keeping me from switching that machine from Windows to Linux is to get that adapter working under Linux. Has anyone succeeded in getting this particular device working on Linux in general or GENTOO in particular? When I boot the machine from the GENTOO LinuxTag Live CD and do modprobe usbnet modprobe prism2_usb I don't get an error message, but iwconfig does not show the device. Any hint on getting this to work, preferably using the Live CD, would be greatly appreciated. [gentoo-user] LinuxTag
I took some photos [1] of the GENTOO booth at LinuxTag, Europe's biggest Linux and Open Source / Free Software event that was held the last couple of days in Karlsruhe, Germany. It seemed that the people at the GENTOO booth made the same mistake we (the people of the PHP booth) made at the previous LinuxTag events but "fixed" this time: the booth was too crowded by GENTOO people hacking and ignoring visitors. I told several friends how much I like GENTOO so they went to your booth were they were ignored, because none of the "hackers" felt responsible to deal with interested visitors. We remedied this mistake this year by limiting the number of PHP people at the booth drasticaly and used other locations to do the hacking. That way the booth personnel could accomodate the visitors to their -- and our -- satisfaction. I installed a minimal GENTOO system (no X, etc.) with USE="nptl -X -gtk -gnome -alsa" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" starting from stage1 and installed the Linux 2.5.74-mm1 kernel. So far, so good. A phenomenon I experience quite often is that the IO-Wait value in "top" goes up to 99% and stays there until I reboot. This happens always during the ./configure run of difference software packages, for instance with httpd-2.1 or PHP 5. Another thing is that I just wanted to emerge valgrind and its configure script printed checking if this is an NPTL-based system... no How so? -- Sebastian Bergmann http://sebastian-bergmann.de/ http://phpOpenTracker.de/ Das Buch zu PHP 5: http://professionelle-softwareentwicklung-mit-php5.de/ -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
