[gentoo-user] 2004.0 ISO image confusion

2004-03-03 Thread Sebastian Bergmann
  Hi,

I am a bit confused by the new ISO images that come with the 2004.0
  release.

I am planning a stage1 installation of GENTOO 2004.0 on an AthlonXP box
[1] and would like to know if the

packages-athlon-xp-2004.0.iso

ISO image is bootable or if it not and contains GRP binary packages and

install-x86-minimal-2004.0.iso

  is the bootable one.

  Thanks,
Sebastian

[gentoo-user] Framebuffer background image

2004-01-12 Thread Sebastian Bergmann
  Hi,

I am using gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.1 and the following grub config

video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr vga=0x317
initrd=/boot/initrd-1024x768

  where

/boot/initrd-1024x768

  was generated using

/sbin/splash -f -s config /boot/initrd-1024x768

Now I do not want a silent bootsplash with a progress bar, so I did not

rc-update add bootsplash default

All I want is a 1024x768 framebuffer console with a background image
  during boot.

The one thing that nags me is that about halfway through the boot
  process the

Booting the system... Press F2 for verbose mode

message appears in the center of the screen. The message is overwritten
  (looks ugly) by subsequent messages.

Can this be configured in such a way that the above message gets not
  displayed?

[gentoo-user] Nested Maildirs

2003-09-02 Thread Sebastian Bergmann
  Hi,

I have set up fetchmail, procmail and postfix to sort my mail into
  nested maildirs, for instance

maildirmake /home/sb/.maildir

maildirmake /home/sb/.maildir/spam
maildirmake /home/sb/.maildir/spam/probable
maildirmake /home/sb/.maildir/spam/record
maildirmake /home/sb/.maildir/spam/sure

The mails are sorted into their correct maildir directory, but both
mutt (working directly on /home/sb/.maildir) and Mozilla Thunderbird
(accessing /home/sb/.maildir via courier-imap) only see the mails that
  are stored in the

/home/sb/.maildir

  folder.

What am I doing wrong? :)

  Thanks in advance,
Sebastian

[gentoo-user] procmail logfile

2003-08-25 Thread Sebastian Bergmann
  Hi,

I'm just getting started with sendmail, fetchmal, procmail etc. and want
procmail to maintain a logfile of its actions.

According to the procmail documentation the following lines at the top
of my /etc/procmailrc should suffice to do so:

LOGFILE=/var/log/procmail
LOGABSTRACT = all
VERBOSE = on

Although mails are fetched by fetchmail and processed by procmail the
  /var/log/procmail logfile is not created.

  Any hints appreciated,
Sebastian

[gentoo-user] postfix and mailgraph

2003-08-25 Thread Sebastian Bergmann
I have successfully installed the GENTOO postfix package and want to
  setup mailgraph [1] now.

I don't have a /var/log/syslog file on my system (I am using metalog as
my system logger) so I thought /var/log/mail/current, the file to which
postfix logs, would be the appropriate file to feed to mailgraph.

  When I now run

mailgraph.pl --logfile /var/log/mail/current

I get a lot of error messages about lines not beeing in syslog format.

  Any hints appreciated,
Sebastian

  Hi,

  I have a T-Sinus 130 data USB / Wireless LAN 802.11b network adapter

switching that machine from Windows to Linux is to get that adapter
  working under Linux.

Has anyone succeeded in getting this particular device working on Linux

When I boot the machine from the GENTOO LinuxTag Live CD and do

modprobe usbnet
modprobe prism2_usb

I don't get an error message, but iwconfig does not show the device.

Any hint on getting this to work, preferably using the Live CD, would be
  greatly appreciated.

  Thanks ind advance,

[gentoo-user] LinuxTag

2003-07-14 Thread Sebastian Bergmann
I took some photos [1] of the GENTOO booth at LinuxTag, Europe's biggest
Linux and Open Source / Free Software event that was held the last
couple of days in Karlsruhe, Germany.

It seemed that the people at the GENTOO booth made the same mistake we
(the people of the PHP booth) made at the previous LinuxTag events but
fixed this time: the booth was too crowded by GENTOO people hacking
and ignoring visitors. I told several friends how much I like GENTOO
so they went to your booth were they were ignored, because none of the
hackers felt responsible to deal with interested visitors.

We remedied this mistake this year by limiting the number of PHP people
at the booth drasticaly and used other locations to do the hacking.
That way the booth personnel could accomodate the visitors to their --
  and our -- satisfaction.

Hope to see you next year,
Sebastian
