still doesn't work. i made sure the modules was loaded, but it shows
'(unused)'. then i set XF86Config to use 'nvidia' and made sure that
the default depth was 16. ran 'kdm' and it didn't load X. the error i
got was :

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

that's actually taken from the XF86 log. i'd rather not post the whole
thing since it's really long, but if anyone would like to seen it i
can send it to you directly.

ah. i assumed incorrectly! ha!

i've been having trouble getting the drivers from nvidia to work, so i
thought his problem was specific to the driver not working correctly.

oh well.

so, i've been having trouble getting the 'nvidia' driver to
work. X returns '(EE) No screens found' (or something like that) when
i have 'nvidia' loading. if i use 'nv', it works fine. i don't have
the log showing this handy, but i can recreate it if needed.

any ideas by this short description? i can post the log, but it will
be quite long.

first of all, please use text only. many of us use MUAs that don't
support HTML formatted emails.

i've been having the same problem. i don't remember when exactly it
started happening tho. i just remember rebooting one time and not
being able to get back into X. my temporary fix was to add a stanza to
my XF86Config for the default 'nv' driver and setting that as the
default. i haven't had any luck in figuring out the actual problem
tho.

Hall, is this how you solved this problem? simply running the config
again? i don't understand how this would fix the problem since you'd
want to change to the 'nvidia' driver after running it.

it appears that it's something to do with the nvidia driver. i'm able
to start X with it's builtin nvidia driver "nv". i suppose i'll start
trying older versions of the nvidia drivers to see if they work.

i'll post my solution when i figure out what's wrong.

as near as i can tell, gnome-vfs was compiling when the system froze
and i had to reboot. i don't think that would affect KDE, X or KDM
though.

[gentoo-user] can't start X after hard reboot

I was just running 'emerge -U world' on my system and the system
locked part way thru the update. I hard reset my system and now I
can't start X. I normally use KDM, but plain old 'startx' doesn't work
either. The error message that I get when I try 'startx' is :

thanks. this worked, but i discovered that what was actually the
problem was that i had 2 versions of libc.so.6 and the wrong one was
being used. i deleted it, did ldconfig, and it works.

thanks for you help. now i know how to compile binary packages on
other systems.

[gentoo-user] please help! [was: glibc 2.3 won't compile]

i think that i may have overwritten some important shared libraries
when i tried to install kmud. now i'm not able to compile and
reinstall glibc. i've even tried downloading the sources from the gnu
site, and, of course, it won't compile. i get the same error as i do
with emerge.

is there a binary distribution that i can use to repair my glibc
install? i just don't want to have to reinstall my whole system to fix
this. 

does any one have any ideas on how i can fix this without
reinstallation. i also tried running ldconfig and recompiling. same
error.

have i completely broken my system?

okay. i did kindof a stupid thing. i downloaded the binary version of
kmud and attempted to install it to /usr/local by copying the in the
lib, bin and share dirs in the package directory to their respective
locations in /usr/local. well, i didn't backup any of those
directories in /usr/local and i didn't use the interactive switch for
copy.

so, now, xnview (and possibly other programs) won't start and gives
this error:

i got this working between a gentoo system and a mandrake 9.1
system. i'm not terribly worried about security on my network inside
my firewall, so i set Browsing On and BrowseAllow @LOCAL. uncommented
,  and  (my printer) and set Allow From 10.1.0.0/24
(my network). you can refine these settings and even set password
authentication. just read the file /etc/cups/cups.conf. it's format is
very much like apache.conf. besides that i just used any browser and
went to cups' built-in config at http://localhost:631. i don't
remember if i had to manually add my printer in the config tool, but
if you do, the address should be in the form
ipp://192.168.0.2:631/printers/name_of_your_printer where 192.168.0.2
is the IP of the system with the printer attached to it.

that should be it. i just got this working, so it's fairly fresh in my
mind. if you have more questions, please ask.

i emerged iptables again ('emerge -p iptabes' showed that it was't
installed), mv the new init script over and restarted it. i'm still
getting the same error.

then, on kind of a fluke, i added the path to the executable on the
command line, and it accepts the command.

go figure.

[gentoo-user] iptables 1.2.8 problem

apparently iptables was upgraded in my last 'emerge -u world' or
something. anyway, something has changed and a command that used to
work doesn't now. the command was :

# iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j SNAT -o eth0 --to 10.1.0.27

now it says "iptables: Invalid argument"

so i discovered that '--to' is no longer valid (it's not in the man
page if it is). when i remove '--to 10.1.0.27' iptables says "iptables
v1.2.8: You must specify --to-source". i modified the command to be :

# iptables -vv -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j SNAT -o eth0 --to-source 10.1.0.27

i don't know what i'm doing wrong, but iptables replies with :

SNAT  all opt -- in * out eth0  0.0.0.0/0  -> 0.0.0.0/0  to:10.1.0.27
libiptc v1.2.8.  5 entries, 784 bytes.

[gentoo-user] itcl and itkwish

i'm trying to get a MUD client that requires itcl/itk to compile. i
merged itcl (which includes itk), but itkwish is nowhere to be
found. the program (SMM++) needs itkwish. why isn't it being compiled
and installed with itcl? i can't find a configure switch or anything
to get it installed. it appears that it should be compiled by default.

any ideas? has anyone else gotten this to work?

zap reset it, but it's still not really starting. if i run
'/etc/init.d/mysql start', there is no mysql process started. there
aren't even any new entries in any log files that i can see from
trying to start it.

is anyone else having a similar problem?

when i recently ran 'emerge -U world', mysql was upgraded to 4.0 which
i'm happy about. the only problem is that it won't start and it won't
stop. when i run '/etc/init.d/mysql start' it says that it's already
running, but when i run '/etc/init.d/mysql stop' it says '[!!]'. and
there is never any mysqld running at any time during that process. i
don't know what happened. i don't know if it ever worked since i
upgraded. i would suspect that it didn't.

so... any ideas?

[gentoo-user] kernel 2.6.0-test1 and NVidia

i'm trying to get the 2.6.0-test1 kernel running on my box (which
compiles, installs and boots), but i can't get the NVidia drivers to
install. it gives a lot of errors then quits. i also tried installing
with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" and i made sure that /usr/src/linux points
to /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test1.

has anyone else seen this? how did you fix it?

i have all 3 of those in my .config and i still get a black screen
when i pass 'vga=791' to the kernel. i can use 'vga=ask' and pick one
and that works fine (but no little tux :( ). i know that these are
really to different modes, but i can't understand why one works and
the other doesn't. i didn't have any problem with mode 791 (0x317)
with my old kernel, but 2.5.73 doesn't seem to like it.

i emerged a couple of apps that i really liked from when i was using
redhat, but now i can't find them.

the only 'xchat' anything that i can find is xchat-text-2. this is
supposed to be a GUI IRC client, but xchat-text-2 is some weird perl
script. and after i installed gkrellm, the only gkrellm i find is
gkrellmd which, as the filename would emply, is a daemon of some sort.

did i do something wrong? where are programs that i installed?

[gentoo-user] timezone offset

some of you may have noticed that my emails keep coming from the
past...

i'm sorry. i don't mean to do it, but i can't figure out how to set
the timezone offset (i'm GMT -6:00). my timestamps are showing GMT
0:00. can someone tell me how to set this?

and now i have to d/l from fileshack! where i have to have an account
and then i still have to wait an hour for my d/l to start!!

this is all due to MicroSnot's licensing. Bioware distributed NWN as
cab files and the extractor can't be distributed for use on other
OS's... or some crap like that. Bioware had an explaination on their
site not too long ago.

extracted everything from the cds.

[gentoo-user] Zope initial login

i just emerged Zope and it's not allowing me to login. i tried the
generated first login and i changed it with zpasswd.py, neither
worked.

has anyone else had this problem or know why it might be doing this?

[gentoo-user] Apache and PHP

i'm having trouble getting Apache working with PHP. a can start Apache
and connect just fine as long as PHP is not loaded. if i then do :

# export APACHE_OPTS='-D PHP4' /etc/init.d/apache restart

apache doesn't bind to port 80. it doesn't appear to bind to anything,
and it doesn't appear to even be running with 'ps ax|grep
apache'. running '/etc/init.d/apache status' shows :

# /etc/init.d/apache status
 * status: started #

then if i do 'unset APACHE_OPTS; /etc/init.d/apache restart', apache
starts and binds to port 80 and i can connect.

am i missing something? i emerged apache php mod_php with USE="X -gtk
-gnome qt kde cups mysql" and all the config files seem to be in the
right places and correct.
