Something is wrong with the cd, or the files, because as you can see, the 
codec is rawdv, and for vcd the file format has to be mpg. So it's not a vcd. 
Or at least it doesn't seem to mplayer to be a vcd. try mounting the disc 
maybe and play the files from there. or rip it using vcdxrip and play the 
files to see that they are not corrupt.

I have got the same error myself trying to play some avi files, it's just not 
the correct codec. 
So if you have the files somewhere else, convert them to mpg files. Or if they 
are downloaded using some sort of p2p, try to get another version of the 
files.

So to conclude: What you have is not a vcd, and the file format of it are not 
recognized by mplayer. Get a new version of files.

mplayer is getting closer then and thing else I tired. It starts then fails 
with these errors. I noticed I do not have a conf file, and not sure how to 
create it, and cant find  DOCS/codecs.html!

 with mplayer it's simply mplayer -vcd 1 (or maybe mplayer vcd://1 with
 the newest version) the vcd doesn't need to be mounted, -Dan

first of all: did you run an emerge win32codecs divx4linux ?
i prefer xine. run xine, then simply choose VCD from the gui. that's it!
make sure in settings = input = path to your local vcd device file is
set right.

No, I was not aware of win32codecs divx4linux until now, so I just emerged 
them.

Still no luck with mplayer, xine or vlc.

I match my settings for xine as seen in /etc/fstab
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0  /mnt/cdrom

(I tried both the first and 2nd entry) and get the following errors:

 it. Close all video applications, and try again. If that does not help, see
 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers.

Do what it says :)
I use vo=x11 and/or vo=sdl, but try them all, can't hurt.
If you get it working, emerge aalib, then possible reemerge mplayer and use 
vo=aa, it will rock your world :)

VLC does everything from playing xvids and divxs to VCDs.  It's a really 
great application.  Just emerge vlc
