Re: [gentoo-user] /usr/portage query
I don't think so. emerge sync or rsync should work, cause it rebuilds the portage tree anyway. Only one way to find out, do it. I would delete my tree and rebuild it, but lucky for me I am not at home to try it. :) Think you just need to rsync again. I haven't accidentally deleted it or anything. The reason I ask is, I'm wondering if it's safe to 'chattr +d /usr/portage' to prevent the portage directory being backed up on my daily backup scripts... it would save a fair amount of space... I just want to make sure that it's still easy to recover from if I do so. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

Re: [gentoo-user] /usr/portage query
That was the thing I was looking for 'regenworld'. Forgot about that command, even though used it before. I just generally use it though when portage sometimes loses track of some of the packages I have installed. Would think you could test it by renaming the portage directory to something else. Then see if it will recreate it. Don't think there is any hard link that would prevent you from just renaming it back to portage if regenerating it failed. I'm not home so I can't check it. I believe emerge sync is enough, but you can always try: mv /usr/portage /usr/portage_bup -- janne So act that your principle of action might safely be made a law for the whole world. - Immanuel Kant -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
