Not wanting to hijack the thread from the OP, but this subject
interests me
for the following reason. I work on a software system where one
customer has
about 1 systems at about 500 locations. Remote systems are
categorized
as one of 3 types/configurations. Automated management of them is
essential,
including upgrades, but seldom upgrades "to the latest and
greatest" as
stability is very important. Upgrades need to "just work", and
not require
manual intervention. Currently, they're all on Windows in one form or
another (ugh!). The systems in question have very limited
capabilities, and
the people on site have very limited permissions.

Other potential customers have similar size systems, and I
certainly expect
someone to realize the value of Linux for this. I'd like to have
a solution
in my mind when the time comes.

I've considered the idea of a custom distribution to do
this. There is no
doubt in my mind, that any such distribtuion would be based on an
existing
one, with tweaks that deal with where updates come from, and what
packages
are availble, etc. Gentoo or Debian are the two likely
candidates. I'm not
*sure* a customized distribution is appropriate.

I think you should take a look at:

I would recommend you use BackupPC. It's masked in portage for testing,
or you can install straight from source (that's actually what I did...)
It's pretty nice - it will use rsync or samba or tar, or rsyncd
depending on how you configure it. Has a nice web interface too...

[gentoo-user] [OT] Backup schemes involving Win XP stored to linux

2006-07-24 Thread reader
I'd like to hear of anyones experiences with a setup like the one I'll
describe in a moment. I haven't worked with this extensively yet but
a tentative plan looks like this:

Three or more windows XP boxes that are devoted primarily to editing
video or graphics in one way or another. The stuff needing backup can
be in really big files but also lots of normal sized still images etc.

I'm planning to use rsnapshot/rsync to back up the NTFS windows disks
to a gentoo box with internal discs with the needed capacity.

I guess what I'd like to hear about is any known problems with mixing
filesystems like that. It will all be run over cifs from linux and the
windows boxes will browse for stuff when needed over smb to the linux
files .

I haven't noticed any show stoppers in my small experiments but wonder
how they will scale up.

I'm thinking of graduating to somekind of external network storage
with a raid setup and really huge capacity, but again I'd like to have
the server end be gentoo and rsnapshot/rsync.

Other schemes are welcome.

I wouldn't recommend the FEATURES=keepwork anymore because there's no guarantee
that the build will resume properly. It's safest to simply use --resume as
suggested by Dale.

Just type in "emerge --resume" and it should carry on normally. It will
start over with the last package that was not completed though. You can
go ahead and run etc-update if you want. Should not matter but never
hurts either.

What is my best course of action at this point? The machine booted
fine so I could start over. I also saved an old email from Zac Medico

FEATURES=keepwork emerge --resume

Would this be a good thing to do?

There are currently 5 files to be dealt with under etc-update.

[gentoo-user] pc not recognised properly from bluetooth device

2006-07-24 Thread Iain Buchanan
Hi list,

I've recently been evaluating a windows mobile pda to see if I want to
buy it (current owner has upgraded). It's running windows mobile 2003,
with bluetooth.

Basically the PDA doesn't recognise the PC as having "active sync
capabilities"...

I've installed synce-multisync_plugin, synce, and multisync. I've tried
these device classes in my /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf:

   # original hcid.conf
   class 0x3e0100;
   # Workstation
   class 0xbe0104;
   # Server
   class 0xbe0108;
   # Laptop
   class 0xbe010c;
   # Laptop with telephony
   class 0xFE010c;
   # Unspecified with telephony
   class 0xFE0100;

and even:

   # Sony Ericcson mobile (don't use!)
   class 0x520204;

not all at once of course! I got the values from
https://www.bluetooth.org/foundry/assignnumb/document/baseband which is
quite interesting...

Anyway, on the PDA, I go to: Start > Settings > System > Bluetooth
Setting > "Bluetooth ActiveSync Setup" Start button, and I just get

"Please start bonding with other Bluetooth device which supports serial
port or ActiveSync profile as your ActiveSync partner!"

I've already bonded to and sent files to / from the PC. If I bond pda
to mobile, I can see the "com port" options available, but just not with
the PC.

Can anyone shed any light? I've followed various howto's / wiki's
(gentoo-wiki and synce.sourceforge.net), but they all assume that you
can do this step without hassle...

Any tips would be appreciated with many thanks!

Very recent ivtv, more so than mine. the website says it is only for 2.6.17,
but you seem to fit the criteria.

Looking at the ivtv website did say this:
http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Troubleshooting

"Use the recommended firmware

* In particular, if you are experiencing sound problems then first
make sure you are using the correct audio firmware. It is a known
problem with older versions that the audio standard is detected but
remains muted. It seems to be fixed with the latest firmware. "

How you tell whether the firmware you have is "correct" ? There are some
checksums here:

http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware#Firmware_Checksums

(Although I just checked mine, they do not match whats on the website,
but they work fine??)

Check that you have xdpyinfo on your system. Firefox uses that to
adjust fonts when it starts.

After upgrading to xorg-x11 7.0 I noticed that fonts in Firefox where
much ugliyer than they used to. I started it in a xterm and it

Or just propose a patch that adds one line to the basic layout
in .../symbols/de and .../symbols/pc/de:

  key  { [ s, S, ssharp, 0x100017F ] };

The only reason they might reject this is that the Romanian variant
then loses the long s. But hey, one can't have everything.

I've put the long s last, because it can occur at the beginning of a
word, so it somewhat has the character of an upper case letter, the
sharp s not. Also, its position corresponds with the Irish layout.

Yes it is just very slow, the mesage stalled keeps coming up and then starts
again.
It seems as if the lan when transferring between computers is using 10 and the
internet is using 100. Both lan cards are 10:100 cards. Does this make
sense?
I will try again and disable virus protection on the xp box to see if that has

I for one don't think that the article or the thread here is for nothing. The
thread was entertaining and educational. I haven't yet set up my system to
mail me anything. This is because I use PORT_LOGDIR=/var/log/portage and
check the logs, and/or I use enotice. In any case, I could probably do with
a mail system to warn me of all sort of things but I am not yet sure what is
the best (more streamlined and efficient) way of setting it up.

If you top this with my lack of understanding of the basic/advanced
architecture and components of a mail system then you see why I enjoyed
reading both your wiki article and this thread. The wiki article may be
obsolete, but you can always update it to explain various options (that's
what Gentoo is about), different configurations, pros & cons, etc. I know
that it all takes time, but if you find it I and many more will surely be
grateful for your contribution. :)

The Irish do map a long s and the Germans don't. This is
speaking volumes. Maybe I should propose to at least
distribute an XkbVariant "longs" and another one
"longs_nodeadkeys".

Any caveats?

How are you measuring the speed of your connection?

I take it that this is a conventional smb setup, not some ssh or vpn tunneled
deal?

PS. I'm on a 1Mb/s adsl connection (or around 125KB/s). If you're getting
100's of MB/s download rate you're either somewhere in South Korea, or you're
on some sort of an fiberoptic backbone, or you're using satellite?

thinking it's slow...
If you are getting "fast speeds in the 100's of MBs" from the internet
then I want your internet connection. it's probably more like 100's of KB...

Regardless, only 1MB across LAN is still slow.

gentoo box to smb:///my directory using konqueror.
What other information can I supply?

Do you have any antivirus running that could be scanning all the files
transfered? I cannot think of another reason for such a difference
between your LAN and Internet transfer speeds. Try another protocol
(HTTP, FTP) and check speed, if its still slow, its probably something
on your XP box, if its fast, then you can check samba configuration.

Anyway, disable any antivirus/firewall and try again.

Try different cables.
I've had situtations where traffic in one direction is "fast", the other
pitifully slow.

I did a bit more checking on this, and you are right, ggi is
definitely not the answer.

The ebuilds let the mplayer configure script autodetect for various
drivers. It also looks like mplayer changed the VESA driver for
1.0_pre8 [1] to depend upon the lrmi library and their own vesautils
stuff. Previous (pre7) versions did not.

The bad news is that while lrmi exists in the portage tree, there is
no ebuild for vesautils.
So for now if you want the vesa driver, you will have to stick with _pre7...

[gentoo-user] very [OT] PCI-Express

2006-07-24 Thread Mike Williams
Hey,

AGP provide a lot more bandwidth then PCI, but only really for graphics cards.
PCI-e also provides a lot more bandwidth than PCI, and can be used for just
about anything.
However, can one of the 2 x16 slots (be they both fully x16 or sharing 16
lanes) on an SLi board be used for something other than a graphics card,
while the other is used for a graphics card?

[gentoo-user] interconnecting speeds

2006-07-24 Thread Paul Stear
I am copying files from my gentoo box to an xp box and it is so slow. I have
both boxes connected with cable via a router, which connects to my broadband
isp.
When downloading from the internet to either box I get fast speeds in the
100's of MBs. However transferring box to box I only get about 1MBs.
Are there any setting I should look at to enable faster transfers?

You need to configure ssmtp. Did you do so?

So, the correct entry for your make.conf is:

PORTAGE_ELOG_MAILURI="[EMAIL PROTECTED] /usr/sbin/sendmail"

I've tried that and it doesn't seem to be working. I have ssmtp
installed with +mailwrapper. Do I need to set up any other kind of
configuration?

[gentoo-user] evince, MIME, and old user together make a strange bug

2006-07-24 Thread Frédéric Grosshans
I've got a strange bug, probably linked with the recent gnome-2.14
upgrade:

Whenever I try to open a pdf file with evince (0.5.3 or 0.5.4), I have
the following error message:

Unhandled MIME type: 'application/x-extension-pdf'

However everything workd fine when I do one of the following :

  * Downgrade shared-mime-info from 0.17-r2 to 0.16
  * open a ps file with evince
  * Log in as a new user, with a clean /home/$user directory

The latter really puzzles me. Does anyone have an idea of what I should
check in order to clean the things up ?

   Thanks,

Fred

Except that Python's smtplib is existing, standard software.

The rest of the discussion is moot as neither of us had read

[gentoo-user] HP nx6125: ACPI malfunctioning as ref'd in gentoo-wiki

2006-07-24 Thread Roman Zilka
Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on getting an HP/Compaq nx6125 laptop (a Sempron
flavor) used to The Penguin and I met the ACPI fans-not-turning-on bug
referenced here in the wiki:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_HP_Compaq_nx6125

This article instructs me to apply some kernel patch which is to be
downloaded from somewhere in the kernel's bug #5534 file. But that bug's
discussion is just unfollowable to me. Besides, there are numerous patches
and half-maybe-fixes mentioned in that bug file and the comments there give
them no context nor a clear "patch with this one, not that one" status.

So please if any of you (maybe the wiki's author himself?) know what patch
exactly should I apply to get the nx6125 working, my huge thanks and
a desperate man's blessings are guaranteed in advance for a hint.:)

(Or maybe the laptop's working fine, only the sensors are not used to the
pitch-boiling climate which reigns over here... /me moves to a cave)

[gentoo-user] Corrupted files in xorg?

2006-07-24 Thread Mick
Hi All,

I was checking through some of the xorg files and discovered two files with
 access permissions in /usr/lib/X11:
==
-- 1 root root 0 Apr 17 2005 X11
-- 1 root root 0 Apr 17 2005 fs

The files are empty. Does this make sense to you? What should they look like
instead?

Well, I am not interested in watching TV. Even if the tuner works that doesn't
necessarily mean that the hardware dealing with composite and Line IN is
working properly.

I may give it a try later but I don't even have an arial because I never watch

The guy on the mythtv list thought his was OK too until someone else spotted
the error - I'm not saying you cannot read a log file, but y'know it happens to
the best of us :-(

As far as i recall you have been trying so far with composite/line in. Is it
worth trying the tuner?

What sort of input does your line-in have? Mine is two RCA plugs, but I have
heard of them having the 2.5mm stereo plugs too (like a headphone socket on a
walkman). If so, make sure the plug is the right one.

Not sure where else to go from here, except back to the vendor.

Mine looks pretty much the same except that it detects the remote. Firmware
gets loaded, all drivers get loaded, no errors.

Meanwhile I do have audio but very very faint if i raise everything to maximum
(mixer, speaker amplifier, ivtvctl).

I don't know. Maybe the hardware is fried.

It seems that the format is not understood ( duh! ;) ) by mplayer. I don't have
this card, my card is an old analog card. So maybe you have the stream alread
in mpeg format. I believe I cannot help you more. Sorry.

Re: [gentoo-user] How to create my own linux distribution

2006-07-24 Thread Jose Gonzalez Gomez
2006/7/18, David Corbin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
Not wanting to hijack the thread from the OP, but this subject interests mefor the following reason. I work on a software system where one customer hasabout 1 systems at about 500 locations.  Remote systems are categorized
as one of 3 types/configurations.  Automated management of them is essential, including upgrades, but seldom upgrades "to the latest and greatest" asstability is very important.  Upgrades need to "just work", and not require
manual intervention.  Currently, they're all on Windows in one form oranother (ugh!).  The systems in question have very limited capabilities, andthe people on site have very limited permissions.Other potential customers have similar size systems, and I certainly expect
someone to realize the value of Linux for this.  I'd like to have a solutionin my mind when the time comes.I've considered the idea of a custom distribution to do this.  There is nodoubt in my mind, that any such distribtuion would be based on an existing
one, with tweaks that deal with where updates come from, and what packagesare availble, etc.  Gentoo or Debian are the two likely candidates.  I'm not*sure* a customized distribution is appropriate.
I think you should take a look at:http://www.reductivelabs.com/projects/puppet/index.htmlhttp://www.cfengine.org/

Have you installed app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs? These are the
32-bit compatible x11 libraries which would be necessary for the
32-bit nvidia libraries.
