Hi,
I have got into a state that has me stumbed - can anyone help please?
On trying to update I find that packages failed to build during the
prerequisite checks with error:

dbus-binding-tool: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory make[3]: ***

eix dbus gives the output

I re-built dbus using command:

but still dbus-binding-tool complains of error whilst loading
libexpat.so.0.

Then ran

Up to date, but probably built against the wrong expat. Rebuild it, and
fontconfig, then run revdep-rebuild.

Thanks for the suggestion Neil. I have run emerge --onshot on
XML-Parser and fontconfig , and then ran revdep-build but the problem
remains.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Since revdep-rebuild was complaining:
('ebuild', '/', 'kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.7-r2', 'merge') pulled in by

I unmerged kdelibs-3.5.5-r10 and re-started revdep-rebuild...it is
still running, so here's hoping.

Make sure you have the latest version of portage installed (at least version
2.1.2.12). Otherwise sync and upgrade portage. Then run revdep-rebuild with
the --package-names parameter.

As for the keyboard, I'd try booting with "clock=tsc" option. I had a
"letters repeating" problem solved that way on an old desktop.

dbus-binding-tool now runs successfully - I will now try a emerge -vDuN
world

So the thing I hadn't tried before starting this thread was to rebuild
fontconfig as Neil suggested.

Thanks Neil. How did you know that that was the solution?

Thanks Bo

What started all this off was a eix-sync which I believe does as you
recommend and which did upgrade to 2.1.2.12.

Anyway the solution was to re-build fontconfig as recommended by Neil
in another posting. How he knew that this needed to be done is a
subject of another reply.

Cheers again

Because that's what fixed it for me some months ago when expat 2.0 first

OK, that's all correct, then.

Yes, I checked before with "find /boot/grub/stage1", which answered
"(hd0,5)". Though actually, it's /dev/sda6, but it doesn't matter, since
GRUB doesn't differentiate between IDE and SATA/SCSI:

According to the I answers I got from the gentoo-amd64 ML, it seems that
the situation most likely had nothing to do with the MBR. Instead, it
was suggested that the stage2 was moved physically to another
sector/inode, so that the stage1 couldn't find it. I'll see how to make
sure that a stage1_5 was installed, to prevent that from messing
anything up.

OK. Thanks for your help!

Just for the records: I'm now using the scripts provided by Novatel because
umtsmon did not work (and because it was the only package requiring qt on my
laptop). Now I'm connecting with
"pppd file /etc/ppp/hsdpa_options ttyUSB0"

Because their scripts do not work as long as you have to enter a PIN, I've
deactivated the PIN using my mobile phone (umtsmon or the Windows tool could
have worked as well).

For E-Plus / Base you need the following settings:
APN:"internet.eplus.de"
user: "eplus"
password:"internet"
number: "*99***1#"

I'm still searching for the kernel option(s).

[gentoo-user] no shorewall

2007-08-25 Thread Jorge Almeida
Anybody managed to get shorewall working with gentoo-sources 2.6.22-r5?
I upgraded from 2.6.20, and there went the firewall. I used oldconfig
just to see what's new, then make clean, then make menuconfig (starting
with the saved config file from kernel 2.6.20). Shorewall is version
3.2.9. I already changed a few things in case some module would be
missing due to name change. I'm out of ideas. In case someone can
provide some suggestion, here comes the output of shorewall start and
the relevant part of .config.

Thanks.

I had similar problems. I solved them with the kernelsettings here:
http://www.shorewall.net/3.0/kernel.htm#v2.6.20
which ist pretty much activating everything :-). So i don´t really know
what did the trick.
But i did not compile this as moduls. Perhaps this is a little
wastefull, but it worked.

No, it's *NOT* a laptop. See
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/desktops_inspn?c=ca&cs=cadhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Last minute update... finally found something on Google. Someone had
a similar problem with Slax, and solved it by the boot line...

slax noapic irqpoll acpi=force

  So I tried...
gentoo noapic irqpoll acpi=force
and I now have a functional keyboard. I notice that only 1 penguin image
appears at boot, rather than 2. Is the "noapic" making my "Dual Core"
(different from "Core Duo") act like only one cpu?

One problem down and one to go. I can get a limited shell. It
doesn't have "lspci" or "fdisk". I want to see what shows up with
"lspci -v" and "fdisk -l". I have a floppy if that helps.

Re: [gentoo-user] dbus-binding-tool: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0:

2007-08-25 Thread Statux
Symptom: dbus-binding-tool won't run because of a missing version of
expat

Research: We probably need to rebuild the package which provides
dbus-binding-tool because expat was updated to a new version which
caused it to break, so we:

# equery b dbus-binding-tool
[ Searching for file(s) dbus-binding-tool in *... ]
dev-libs/dbus-glib-0.73 (/usr/bin/dbus-binding-tool)

Solution: # emerge dev-libs/dbus-glib

Explanation: If dbus-glib had a new stable version available when the
big batch of updates came through this past week, then it would have
been inserted into the order between the expat update and the next
package which would call dbus-binding-tool during its build. This would
have solved the problem automatically but since there was no update to
dbus-glib... this happened to everyone.

The first time I went through this (I had 2 systems to update), I went
for a revdep-rebuild after i had this problem but found that it would
downgrade my newly updated kdelibs because konqueror hadn't been updated
yet which required older versions of other things which required the
older kdelibs... it was a mess and kdelibs takes a while to compile. So,
I decided to then attack the dbus-binding-tool problem directly and then
started thinking more clearly.

I was reading the last several replies to this issue and I couldn't find
any one of them to be short and sweet. So, that's my solution - quick
and to the point :-)
