[gentoo-user] Update After A Year
Hi, I moved from my flat a year ago, and now I' went back. At my temporary place I wasn't be able to reach the internet, so I didn't update the system. Now I'd like to update it. Should I do anything special in addition to an emerge -e system; emerge -e world? Are there anything I should attend to? TIA, Tamas Sarga

Do i have to recompile? or? is there are way around it. - tj Hi, Just a small side-note: On this list the bottom-post is the accepted method. You have to recompile, but don't be affraid. It won't recompile the already compiled parts. [EMAIL PROTECTED] make [EMAIL PROTECTED] make modules_install will do it. The make will decide what to compile, and what not. You would need make modules_install only if compile e100 as a module. If you compile it into kernel, than don't need for make modules_install, but need to copy the new bzImage to /boot/. I'm not sure whether needed, but if you want absolute safety, re-run your lilo or grub. HTH. Cheers, Tamas Sarga Srga Tams -- Make the world confused!Zavard ssze a vilgot! [gentoo-user] lm_sensor stop freeze
Hi, I can not halt my PC, 'cause when lm_sensors stop, the system freezes. The problem, how I see, that rmmod i2c_viapro can not succeed, cause of Device or resource busy. What can occupy the module in the late state of shutdown? My /etc/conf.d/lm_sensors is the following (generated by sensors-detect): # List the modules that are to be loaded for your system # # Generated by sensors-detect on Sat Feb 12 12:13:44 2005 #These are compiled into the kernel #NOLOADMODULES=YES MODULE_0=i2c-viapro MODULE_1=i2c-isa MODULE_2=eeprom MODULE_3=w83627hf It is an 1800+ Athlon XP with a 2.6.11-r6 gentoo-sources. In addition I don't really understand, why the system freezes instead of a simple error message about rmmod failed and go on. TIA. If you are interested in a recommendation, I would choose Reiser over ext3 as it has better support for large numbers of small files typical with desktop usage. Hi, I heard lot of urban legend about flying away data from reiser3 4. I can never validate whether was FS, or user error, but some performance dropback for stability is more than acceptable for me. I used to develop home, but I haven't got enough money for UPS, and two HDD with mirroring. I used to create backups every month, but it gives just a minimal safety. So, thanks for your suggestion, but I won't use reiserFS, I know there are thousands of users, with millions of workhours without any trouble, but few negative feedbacks are enough me to fear ;) TIA. [gentoo-user] turn off TV card
Hi, I have a Leadtek WinTV 2000 Deluxe (bt787). It is wonderful, my only problem, that I always hear its sound. I quit from tvtime and start XMMS, and I hear Jockey Ewing while Alannis Morisette is singing :) How can I solve this? TIA. [gentoo-user] NPTL or not on AMD 1800+ desktop
Hi, What do you think. Will I get better performance if I turn on NPTL on a AMD 1800+ Athlon XP 512MB RAM. I use this machine for desktop purposes. KDE, XMMS, Firefox, Tvtime, Kdevelop, Wesnoth, K3B, some audio- video recording and so on. Advantages? Disadvantages? TIA. [gentoo-user] problems with XFCE4
Hi, I emerged XFCE4 and XFCE4-extras. It built without any problem. I start it by KDM, or startxfce4 and it seems weird. There isn't titlebar of the windows, so I can't minimize, or even move, or resize these. Alt+TAB isn't work. I can not change windows. What can be the problem? What information do you need? The logs don't contain any relevant message. TIA. Cheers, Tamas Sarga Srga Tams -- Make the world confused!Zavard ssze a vilgot! [gentoo-user] [OT]Which TV recorder
Hi, I use tvtime for viewing TV. What do you suggest as a simple tv recorder and why? I just want a simple app. to record from-time to-time x-station to an AVI. My card uses bt787. I read about Mythtv, but I don't want to install Mysql if it isn't absolutely required. BTW why Mythtv depends on Mysql? It can not work without it? What Mythtv use it for? TIA. [gentoo-user] resume emerge after reboot
Hi, I'd like to do an emerge -e world. It would take 3 days, but I can't sleep next to my machine, 'cause of the sound of the 7000RPM CPU cooler. If I start an emerge, then C-c it, shutdown, start the PC at morning, can I resume the emerge -e? TIA. Cheers, Tamas Sarga Srga Tams -- Make the world confused!Zavard ssze a vilgot! I'd have been able to tell you for sure but I wiped it off my last machine last month when I enforced the vim with color syntax standardization. Once you get used to syntax highlighting you can never go back. Plus there is nothing like half your named.conf shifting to red to let you know you typo'ed a } somewhere. kashani If you don't pleased with the built-in colour-schemes (such as me), just copy a colorscheme to $VIMRUNTIME/colour (IIRC) and edit it. Re: [gentoo-user] /usr/portage
On Wed, 20 Apr 2005, Rodolphe Rocca wrote: rm -f /usr/portage/distfiles/* no risk. Yes, there is no risk, but there are a much better solution, it's called distclean. You can search for it on forum. It is a script, which will remove the sources of packages what are NOT in portage already. Old Openoffice, America's Army, and so on. In addition you can search for doubles with etcat. For example KDE 3.2 and 3.3 use different slots, so maybe you have old KDE which isn't used anymore. The mentioned applications are just for example of course. There were a quite deep thread in the past around saving (conquer back) diskspace. I don't remember the subject, but you could find it if you want. HTH.
