Yes, it is quite probable that udev, evdev or the like
is responsible for the problem.

The first file exists and the second one is not.

I have a similar issue with a USB WiFi adaptor, particularly after a
suspend. I found that I can wake it u without rebooting with

rfkill block wlan; rfkill unblock wlan

I'll go on a guess alsa got installed on the system. If that is correct,
please try a command as root in terminal if necessary or on console:

amixer set Master 100% unmute && alsactl store && aplay
/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
It's possible that doesn't work because /var/lib/alsa/asound.state exists
or /var/lock/alsa.lock exists.
If those two files do not exist and pulseaudio and/or pipewire hasn't
gummed up the works that should work.

I'll blame some relatively recent change in the kernel or some interaction
with udev. I have previously posted a problem regarding a USB NIC, rather
than a USB sound card as in your case. Now I also noticed a problem with the
initialisation of an onboard WiFi card on another laptop, which is driven by
the internal MoBo USB controller along with bluetooth.

I don't know what causes the problem but I wager the order in which a device
is plugged in/switched on by the user affects whether the kernel will detect it
and initialise it, or not.

On this laptop the onboard WiFi has to be switched on already at boot time, or
I need to reboot after switching it on. Restarting the wlan0 service without
a reboot fails to connect to the AP.

On the previous post of mine about another laptop with an external USB NIC
adaptor (wired), the ethernet cable has to remain disconnected until SDDM
starts, or SDDM will not launch. Restarting the wired interface service
allows SDDM to start.

My superficial conclusion i

I have accidentally found that the problem with
absence of sound on my Gentoo box appears
only when my USB Logitech webcam is connected
to the computer during the boot time.

Moreover, if it happens and the sound is absent,
the alsamixer shows that my USB Logitech webcam
is considered by the system as a default sound device.

So, it tries to send sound there even though it does
not have any speaker.

Last time I have ended the discussion on my
"no sound" problem acknowledging that I was
so stupid that "forgot that I should use M to
unmute a channel in alsamixer."

However, it turned out that it was not the case:
currently I have all channels in alsamixer unmuted
and have sound only in about 1 from 10 bootings of
my Gentoo system, while I do always have sound
on the same computer while I boot it with Ubuntu 20.04.

I have also compared the output of lsmod command
on both systems and found out that my Gentoo system
had all sound kernel modules that my Ubuntu system has
and even more. (In Gentoo, I still have quite an old 5.4.97
kernel, but I do not think that it is the cause of my
"no sound" problem.)

Of course, it is completely my responsibility that
I have built my Gentoo system in such a way that
I never know if I will have sound after its next boot.
However I am lost guessing what I did wrong.
(Comparing with Ubuntu 20.04, my Gentoo system
has no systemd and no pulseaudio, no consolekit,
and no policykit.)

I leave this just for history, as I am currently
in a war zone and so investigating this problem
further is not in my priority list. :(

Without the alsa kernel driver available, the pulseaudio mixing controls won't
be able to talk to the hardware.

Does 'alsactl init' report something different after a cold reboot when sound
works as expected, as opposed to after hibernation?

Does your audio driver have a power saving function? modinfo will show this
and you can enable/disable it, via /etc/modprobe.d/ - see here for more info:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Power_management/Soundcard

Do you have alsasound service configured to run at boot? If so, does sound
return if you restart the service after hibernation?

Another thought: could it be the default audio device changes after restoring
from hibernation? What I mean is, if your audio device has PCM and HDMI
outputs, it may be the order is reversed for some unknown reason. If so, you
should still have sound on one of the outputs. In this case, you could
hardcode the order of the audio devices in /etc/asound.conf so the desired
audio card output is always the default.

If none of the above provide a solution, then it must be some MoBo/driver bug,
which will need more involved debugging with the latest testing kernel
version.

After running "alsactl init" the only settings muted in "alsamixer" are
"Master" and "Headphone", and yes, I can unmute both by pressing the "m"
key. But this does neither bring back sound nor does it change the out-

The above on my system refers to headphone control:

CTL{name}="Headphone Playback Switch",CTL{do_search}=="1", \
  CTL{values}="on"

> /usr/share/alsa/init/default:263: value write error: Input/output error
> /usr/share/alsa/init/default:263: value write error: Input/output error

This refers to recording volume:

CTL{name}="Capture Volume",CTL{do_search}=="1", \
  CTL{write}!="$env{cvolume}",CTL{values}="$env{cpercent}"

is your user a member of the audio group?

Are you able to unmute your settings, if muted, with alsamixer?

I recall an older alsa bug with some realtek driver, whereby to get their
audio back some users had to suspend to RAM first. :-/ Yes, I know, it
sounds like cargo-culting, but apparently it worked for them.

Thanks for this background information :-)

Am I correct in asuming that this more or less is still true, and I'd
rather continue to build sound support as modules?

Erm ... good suggestion:

$ alsactl init
alsa-lib
/var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.3.2-r1/work/alsa-lib-1.2.3.2/src/ucm/main.c:983:(snd_use_case_mgr_open)

Running "sudo alsactl init" produces exactly the same result. So what's

It used to be the case modules were probed/reloaded by 'alsactl init' when
initialising the audio card. If built in the kernel binary the command
couldn't do this. Troubleshooting required monitoring responses and errors as
the modules were being loaded and consequently the devs were not very
forthcoming with solutions, unless you had your alsa drivers compiled as
modules.

I had a laptop a long time ago, which I had to reboot into MSWindows to get
the audio to work again. Using alsamixer and alsactl in Linux would not wake
up the card, no matter what I tried. One day this problem went away after a
kernel update, so I attributed it to a buggy linux audio driver.

Some modules show power saving features with 'modinfo', which may alter the
card's behaviour if they can be switched off.

I suggest you use alsactl init before and after and compare the output between
a working and non-working state, to try to isolate the problem.

True.  It may improve how the hardware works.  One could test the
theory.  One could wait until the next kernel build to do it too.  Lots
of options there.  ;-)

 Glad it's working now. I need a shower. I been cutting down trees and

I'm doing that on my place here.  Trying to make things better.  It's a
hard job and I'm amazed I have done as much as I have.  I'm about done

Ahh.  Well, if you build it and then need it later, it's already there.
If you don't and then need it later, you have to go back and build it
and may be in a hurry.  I tend to get all hardware working even if I'm
not using it at the time.  Of course, you could plan to do that when you
update your next kernel and it's just a little more to do but you will
be doing most of it anyway since you're updating.  It's a thought.

Well, when on this mailing list, you will get ideas pretty fast.  Given
that you had things working but not making noise, my first thought was
the mute.  I ran into that a couple times myself in the past.  One would

One should run that '/etc/init.d/alsasound save' once when sound
works, so that later save on stop and restore on reboot work ;)

BTW: I liked the SUSE way of symlinking init-scripts to /usr/sbin/rc*,
e.g. /usr/sbin/rcalsasound -> /etc/init.d/alsasound
I now do that (to /usr/local/sbin/rc*) for stuff that I don't want in

Try adding alsasound to the default runlevel.  And then:

/etc/init.d/alsasound start

and then

/etc/init.d/alsasound save

I think it is save.  If it pukes, may have to peek into the init script
and see what option it is. That should make it survive a reboot.

Type in alsamixer in a console or whatever you use and hit tab twice.  I
suspect you have that installed.  You should have a text version, like a
console uses, and a gui version, that should work in any DM.  Pick your
poison and see if anything there is muted or the volume is set really
low, like 1 out of 100 or something.  I think hitting the "m" key
toggles the mute.  I think it's the arrow keys to increase or decrease
volume and move from channel to channel.  It has been a while since I
used that so can't recall.

Let's just hope it is that simple.

Thank you for your input. Yes, it seems that something is muted but what?
I have no KDE and no kmix installed. No pulseaudio.

Thank you for your help. I turned on the computer, changed options snd
cards_limit to 2 and ran aplay /usr/share/sound/alsa/*.wav (I have a
different named wav files). There was a sound. Then I started Firefox
and opened some youtube videos. The sound was present as well. Then I
opened alsamixer. Some of the channels were muted and some had no full
sound. Nevertheless, the sound had been present. I unmuted all the
channels and set the full sound level on all of them. Then I again
checked that the sound is present. It was. So, I rebooted the
computer, ran alsamixer and made sure that all channels are unmuted
and have full sound level. But this time the sound was absent exactly
as I expected. Neither aplay nor Firefox produced any sound. I have
already seen this behavior when I experimented with the kernel
configuration about 8 months ago: the same kernel options, the same
configuration files, all alsamixer channels are unmuted but after one
reboot I have a sound and on another I have no sound. Any thoughts?

Just a thought.  Are you sure that everything is unmuted?  Years ago,
all the sound control software, Kmix, alsa and others, default to mute.
If just one of them is muted, no sound.  I seem to recall when I did my
install on this rig that I had to unmute the sound in three places,
Kmix, alsa and one other that I can't recall the name of.  I think I had
to turn up the volume on alsa as it was set to a really low level once
it was unmuted.  Usually, I turn all of them to the max except the one I
mainly use.  In my case, Kmix is the one I use to really control things
since it sits on the panel thingy.  The others are set at the max.

It's a silly thing but thought it worth a mention just in case there is
a muted setting somewhere.

Looks good, but snd-hda-codec-hdmi might still get loaded, so try with:

options snd cards_limit=2

(or even more)...

Should not be necessary.

[still no sound after reboot in FF/Skype]

Try:

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/test.wav

before tackling FF etc. And check alsamixer etc. for it might have
wrong options set as the device might have been moved..

Thank you for your advice. The SND_PCI option is switched on in my
current generic kernel (gentoo-kernel-5.4.64) as well in the last
tried configuration of gentoo-sources-4.19.86. Moreover, almost every
possible option inside the section to which it points is compiled as a
module. I do not know why snd_pci does not show itself after entering
the lsmod command. Probably, because it is not a module but a section
of the kernel config.

  There is no mention of SND_PCI. When doing "make menuconfig", you
***MUST*** first enable...

Device Drivers > Sound card support > Advanced Linux Sound Architecture > PCI
sound devices

  Don't select any of the drivers under that option; just enable the
barebones option. If you don't enable it, then nothing shows up under
"HD Audio" where all the codecs you mention are listed. If you're doing
it manually, set...

CONFIG_SND_PCI=y

  Either way, rebuild the kernel and try again. Hopefully, that solves
the problem.

Thank you for your reply. I have actually used this approach in one of
my first attempts.
Below is the output of lsmod on the install usb with all modules that
I think is irrelevant to sound removed.

Module  Size  Used by
---
snd_hda_codec_realtek77824  1
snd_hda_codec_generic61440  1 snd_hda_codec_realtek
snd_hda_codec_hdmi 49152  1
snd_hda_intel  32768  0
snd_hda_codec  90112  4
snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec_realtek
snd_hda_core   57344  5
snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_codec_realtek
snd_pcm81920  4
snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_core
snd_timer  28672  1 snd_pcm
snd69632  7
snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_timer,snd_pcm
soundcore  16384  1 snd
---

All these modules appear in the lsmod | less in my current Gentoo
install (gentoo-kernel-5.4.64 without changes).
Below I even made a table to be sure.

Here is the comparative table for your kernel parameters vs those of
gentoo-kernel 5.4.64 and my last tried configuration in
gentoo-sources-4.19.86:
-
CONFIG | 4.14 | 5.4.64 | 4.19.86
SND  | y  | m| y
SND_TIMER   | y  | m| y
SND_PCM  | y  | m| y
SND_HWDEP | m | m| y
SND_DRIVERS   | y  | y | y
SND_PCI| y  | y | y
SND_HDA  | m | m| y
SND_HDA_INTEL| m| m| y
SND_HDA_HWDEP | y | y | n
SND_HDA_RECONFIG | y| y | y
SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK | m | m | y
SND_HDA_GENERIC   | m | m | y
SND_HDA_CORE| m | m | y
SND_SPI | y | n | absent

The last option is absent from my config file of gentoo-source-4.19.86.
However, it seems that in gentoo-kernel-5.4-64 it also means nothing
because it leads to an empty section even if it is chosen.

So, it seems that at least the configuration for kernel 5.4.64 should
work. However, it does not.

Re: [gentoo-user] No sound. Please, help!

2020-10-17 Thread Walter Dnes
  Here's a strategy I occasionally use...

1) Download a Gentoo "minimal install" and set up a USB key to boot from it.

2) Boot the PC from the install USB key.

3) Execute the command...

   lsmod | less

4) Manually scan the output for anything related to sound and write it down.

   That should give you an idea of what modules the install decided on
after doing hardware probing. This'll work for almost any device. I
recently installed Gentoo on a older machine with an ethernet chip that
identified as a string of numbers which didn't help me. But checking
"lsmod | less" showed the "e1000e" module in use. I compiled in the
driver that gives that module and it works.

   To get a screen capture that you can post here...

1) Boot from the install USB key.

2) mount /dev/sdxy /mnt/gentoo
   Where "x" is a, or b, or c, etc.  "y" is 1, or 2, or 3, etc as
appropriate for your machine.

3) lsmod > /mnt/gentoo/mymodules.txt

   Reboot, from the hard drive, find "mymodules.txt" and check it. If
you need further help, post it on this list.

Ok, that board should be rather closeish to mine (GA-MA770TA-UD3.

automatically.

Simliar here, but it'd be interesting, what actual device is that
onboard sound, here it's:

$ /sbin/lspci -nn | grep Audio
00:14.2 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00
Azalia (Intel HDA) [1002:4383]
[plus the HDMI of the video card]

According to the MoBo manual, it's a Realtek ALC888 codec.

>My current kernel configuration is exactly the same as in the
>gentoo-kernel-5.4.64 package as I have not changed anything there.

This works here:

CONFIG_SND=y
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=y
CONFIG_SND_PCM=y
CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=m
CONFIG_SND_DRIVERS=y
CONFIG_SND_PCI=y

CONFIG_SND_HDA=m

CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG=y
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=m
CONFIG_SND_HDA_CORE=m
CONFIG_SND_SPI=y

Not sure if CONFIG_SND_SPI and CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC are needed, but
the other ones seem crucial.

Oh, the above is for a 4.14 kernel, but has been the same for a looong

First I thought about not responding here but decided otherwise. May I
ask you first if you did a basic search about this issue before posting
here?

If I look for "'PaAlsaStreamComponent_GetAvailableFrames( self,
&framesAvail, xrun )' failed" the first result is a link to the Gentoo
forum [1] which suggests the installation of alsa-oss to fix this issue.

So did you look for the issue and put some effort into it before posting
here? No offense but you post a lot of questions about problems you have
here which in my opinion are often solved with little effort you could
have done yourself. So the thought pops up that you are just lazy and
let others do the work. Also I only every see you asking questions but
never trying to answer questions of others.

Explaining your problem and also stating what you already tried or where
you have looked for a solution will avoid that people get that
impressions and they may be more helpful. Or the post is completely
unnecessary because you solved it yourself after 5 minutes of
investigation which saves the time of all the other list participants.

Just a friendly recommendation from me as over time this annoys me a
little and probably I am not the only one here. If people are annoyed it
is unlikely for them to help. So help yourself to make others help you.

Did you setup /etc/asound.conf or .asoundrc ?

I was under the impression that pulse uses the lower level ALSA stuff, so
you can use ALSA without pulse but not pulse without ALSA

It's been a loong time since I had to deal with this.  I recall
unmuting the ones you listed but there is another one that I had to
unmute and I can't recall what it was for sure.  I want to say it was
Kmix, since I use KDE, but not sure.  If it's loading correctly, I bet
something somewhere is muted.  I sort of wish that wasn't the default.

I might add, I once plugged the speakers into the wrong plug too.  It
looked like the right one.  lol

Hunter,

I am a new gentoo user and had trouble getting my sound card to work.
It took me a lot of head scratching and I was able to finally get it to
be recognized.

I don't know what the statement below means or where you set this
configuration.

I cannot explain the following.

I was about the try the last suggestions (use kill -9; load more sound
modules) when I, just for fun, retried alsamixer. I did the usual
unmute everything and it somehow just worked.

I did nothing new and would not be surprised if, during the next flight,
the headphones fail again, but it is clearly not a kernel problem.

Thanks you all for your help.

Those are usually for smartphones and other System-On-Chip embedded
system. How about:

# grep CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC .config

It is possible that the headset runs off a different chip and
you're missing the codec driver for it. To check enable them all in
the same way you're building your other audio drivers (modules or
builtin). If it works you just need to figure out which one you
need and disable the rest.

Maybe? You could try reconfiguring your kernel with all of the Intel
audio-related drivers as modules, and see what happens.

It exited immediately because `pulseaudio --kill' did not actually kill
PulseAudio. Maybe try:

Just double checking; what is the value of these config keys in your
kernel config?

* SND_HDA_INTEL
* SND_INTEL* (there are a few of these)
* SND_SOC_INTEL* (there are a few of these)

I'm completely grasping at straws here. Another option may be opening up
a terminal and running:

pulseaudio --kill
pulseaudio --start --daemonize=no --verbose

Then try and use audio and see what exactly gets spit out.

Audio for me Just Works (tm), so I hope this helps.

I tried alsamixer with interesting results. I used f3 [playback].

I first unmuted everything and tried to raise the volume of all.
I could raise the volume of all but the first headphone column

The columns from left to right are

Master Headphone Headphone Headphone Speaker PCM Auto-Mute et al

   |
   could not raise this column

When the headphone is plugged in the second column is set to un-mute and
the speaker column is set to mute. When the headphone is unplugged the
reverse occurs. All this looks right. But I can't raise the volume
setting for the second column (I can and did raise columns 3 and 4.

I sure looks like the headphone gets unmuted but is permanently at
volume 0.

Also the gnome volume control (top bar) shows headphone and when I move
its slider it raises/lowers the first column (master) volume.

To answer Alec's questions this is a 3.5mm jack. Nothing new in dmesg.
sudo lspci | grep -i audio shows
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Audio Controller (rev 09)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio

I think/hope we are getting close and thank everyone for their help.

What does running `dmesg' output around the time that you plug in and
unplug your headphones? Around the time that you start a movie/music?

What about `lsusb', `lspci', etc?

check either with alsamixer and make sure the headphone jack isn't muted,
or look into pulseaudio if you're using that, although I can't help much
there as I don't use pulse.

a mic + headphone (i.e., three signals mic, left "ear", right "ear" as
used for cell phones. I have one of those at home I can try this

Thank you (and robot1). I installed pavucontrol and followed your

The volume is probably muted for the headphones. Install pavucontrol,
and execute it while the movie is playing. In the "Output Devices" tab
look for your sound card (probably something like "Built-in Audio"),
and in port select "Headphones". Then adjust the volume.

I can't reproduce this. I'm using ~amd64, firefox 8, pulseaudio 1.1.
Do you have multiple sound cards or sound output devices? Maybe the
sound is going to another sink that the one you expected? I'm under
KDE, and KMix have a cool "extension" by PA that let me direct streams
online to the sink I wish.

I deeply apologize answering that late, I was the last days sick and

 Mmmh. It's not exactly like that: If you use pcm.pulse and ctl.pulse,
 then you need to specify pulse as the virtual ALSA device. If you want
 "all alsa applications to be redirected to pulse", you need:

 pcm.!default {

 Looks OK.

 I wouldn't touch the files on /etc/pulse. I recommend first trying to
 make it work with the files included with pulseaudio (backup
 /etc/pulse, move the dir out of /etc and emerge again pulseaudio)

You are absolutely right!
when I added asound.conf again, all alsa sources are directed to
pulseaudio and again no sound.

I am not an expert with pulseaudio. If you can help me there, I would

In the meanwhile I will see how to get it handled. As I got it
(hopefully) solved, I will repost.

Also, if flash didn't work previously, that's because it was not using
PA (or alsa default device), it was hardcoded to use alsa device hw0,
so they "forcefully" used to use ALSA. Since PA has control over the
sound device (since PA is the mixer, not ALSA), flash couldn't use it,
thus no sound.

I reaffirm, you should use all 4 blocks of configuration in your
asound.conf. It will "create" the PA virtual device and also set it as
default for the system. This way, ALSA software will output to PA too.

pavucontrol is your friend. It lets you configure your sound devices
current profile, and also set the fallback (default) sink.

I think I see the problem: the sound is getting through the digital output,
not the analog one (near the end of pactl output). You need to set the
analog output: pactl man page will tell you how (sorry, left the laptop at
the office and I'm writing this on my phone). It's also possible to do it
with gnome-sound-settings, in the hardware tab (if I remember correctly).

Good luck.

 Mmmh. It's not exactly like that: If you use pcm.pulse and ctl.pulse,
 then you need to specify pulse as the virtual ALSA device. If you want
 "all alsa applications to be redirected to pulse", you need:

 pcm.!default {
 type pulse
 }

 ctl.!default {
 type pulse
 }

 That should work. Did you check in sound settings that pulse is indeed
 the desired output

 Looks OK.

 I wouldn't touch the files on /etc/pulse. I recommend first trying to
 make it work with the files included with pulseaudio (backup
 /etc/pulse, move the dir out of /etc and emerge again pulseaudio)
 before trying anything else. Supposedly, pulseaudio should "just
 works". Since the first time I installed it I have never touched the
 files in /etc/pulse, except to change the log-level of the daemon.

I opened the browser, and I hear music WOW!!! but the pulsemeter
playback is death. It does, but not through pulseaudio :(

so with alsa directly we have sound, but not with pulseaudio

I did, and fired all the bars up. nothing! really nothing!

I have the dumb feeling that one process is blocking the output, I hear
in my headphones the white noise of my system, which wouldn't be there
if the soundcard hadn't been initialised.

Is there a way to find out which applications might make use of the
soundcard right now?!

 I have configured pulseaudio according

 http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/PulseAudio

 but I simply have no sound.

 The pulseaudio playback volume meter shows me signal, and that the bars
 are jumping if I playback a music track.

 alsa-plugins (with pulseaudio USE flag)
 gst-plugins-pulse

 are installed. But I don't know what is being blocked, that I have no
 sound output at my headphones.

 PS: the headphones are ok.

 Any suggestions?

Because Flash player didn't work in the past. When flash started, it
blocked the output of all other things among.

Why did you leave these out of your /etc/asound.conf

Mmmh. It's not exactly like that: If you use pcm.pulse and ctl.pulse,
then you need to specify pulse as the virtual ALSA device. If you want
"all alsa applications to be redirected to pulse", you need:

pcm.!default {
type pulse
}

ctl.!default {
type pulse
}

> The players Rhythmbox, xine all with pulseaudio default output plugins.

That should work. Did you check in sound settings that pulse is indeed
the desired output

Looks OK.

> I have added all config files in "/etc/pulse/"

I wouldn't touch the files on /etc/pulse. I recommend first trying to
make it work with the files included with pulseaudio (backup
/etc/pulse, move the dir out of /etc and emerge again pulseaudio)
before trying anything else. Supposedly, pulseaudio should "just
works". Since the first time I installed it I have never touched the
files in /etc/pulse, except to change the log-level of the daemon.

I'm on GNOME 3, so things are a little different, and I don't remember
exactly the dialogs, but instead of the Gentoo wiki page, I would
follow this:

http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup

And more specifically:

http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup#GNOME

and

http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup#GStreamerApplications

Also, in really weird cases, the ALSA device gets its volume muted:
You can try to remove (back up first) /etc/asound.conf, and run (as
root)

alsamixer -V all

and trying to unmute and turn up the volume on everything. When you
hear something with any player, return the asound.conf to /etc and try
again.

Regards.

~/.asoundrc doesn't exist.

I have /etc/asound.conf with these entries:

pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}

ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}

for all alsa applications to be redirected to pulse!

The players Rhythmbox, xine all with pulseaudio default output plugins.

Yes!

The settings (compression algo, audio samplerate and device and such)
are stored in a config file which I didnt't touch.
Currently, when I record from the webcam I get the effects described
above: Video yes, audio no with mplayer output as given above...

May /I have to change the settings/ for what reason ever?!?

Can you record again from your webcam and then play the file?
Does the file you record is the same compression algorithm as the file that
doesn't work?

Hi Kfir,

thank you for your reply! :)

sorry, English isn't my mothers tongue...

When playing other videos there is no problem with the sound.

What did you mean with

"Can you record now a picture with the webcam and play it with sound after?"

Does your sound works playing other files (alsamixer)?
Can you record now a picture with the webcam and play it with sound after?

My wisdom agrees with this. 90% of problems I've had getting
hibernate-ram to function correctly is all in the
/etc/hibernate/common.conf file. Please check these options very
well. For different kernel builds or X configurations, the best

Thanks, as I said, the problem I have now is that programs that play
sound (mplayer, Firefox sometimes) don't survive suspend-resume.
Actually, they survive, it's just that FF tends to lock up when watching
youtube-style videos. Sound is broken during suspend-resume, and can
only be fixed by closing all programs using the sound drivers, then
unloading and reloading the sound driver module. Unfortunately, the
panel volume changer applet (for LXDE, I'm using hardware from 2000,
remember...) is one of those programs (it took me a solid 3 hours to
figure that one out), so I no longer run that applet.

I am happy with my current suspend-resume setup, and can say that gentoo
is the only distro that successfully suspend/hibernates when using the
proprietary nvidia drivers, and the only one that runs with little
enough latency for me* (preemptable kernel ftw!). Thanks guys.

Yes, but only if not programs are using the module. Now, I have a script
which shuts down alsasound, unloads and reloads the module, and then
starts alsasound. However, it only works when no programs are trying to
use the sound driver. Any programs using the sound driver when I suspend
the system tend to crash when resumed, and the fixsound script only
works if no such programs are open. Everything else works fine after
suspend/resume, even the proprietary nvidia drivers. Thanks!

You may get more helpful advice than this, but in case you don't
try booting from a Knoppix or Ubuntu LiveCD. If the sound works in
that then you can try copying the relevant config files on your Gentoo
system. If it doesn't, then it hasn't taken you long to try.

Try to add CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK=y
(Build Realtek HD-audio codec support)

It's working here since kernel 2.6.30 and recent alsa-lib
(>=media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.21)

Try to set everything in alsamixer to (100 %)

Oh.
SPDIF output (IEC958) was unmuted and all the output got routed there.
Muted SPDIF and everything works now.

To be really sure ALSA is working, I suggest you try aplay. Notice
that aplay is minimalistic, and does not support formats like vorbis
(AFAIK). Feed a wav to it. Example:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav
Both aplay and /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav come from
media-sound/alsa-utils

You have a lot of verbosity with aplay -v

Also notice that many mixer controls have not only a volume bar, but
also a setting of muted or unmuted. A mixer control may show its bar
at 100% but be muted, which could be confusing if you are not familiar
with alsamixer. In my case least, the relevant mixer controls for a
wav file are "Master" and "PCM". Both are stereo, both have volume
bars, but only "PCM" has a mute/unmute setting.
I don't know if this is your case, this wasn't clear from your
screenshot. Can you get a png screenshot and send directly to my
email?. Of course, it would be better if the alsamixer screen was
maximized when you take the screenshot.

Also, to test with another OS could be useful. Do you have any LiveCD?
