[gep-ed] CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Environmental Governance for Peace in Colombia

2020-12-11 Thread Erika Weinthal

Dear colleagues,

I want to bring to your attention a conference and policy dialogue on
“Environmental Governance for Peace in Colombia.” This
free, online conference will take place March 18 – 19, 2021 in both Spanish
and English (with simultaneous translation). The conference is
co-organized by the Environmental Peacebuilding Association, the
Environmental Law Institute, the Global Green Growth Institute, Externado
University of Colombia, Duke University, and the United Nations Development
Programme, with the support of the Swedish Postcode Foundation.

This conference builds upon the 1st International Conference on
Environmental Peacebuilding and ongoing series of webinars on Colombia and
peacebuilding (
https://www.environmentalpeacebuilding.org/conferences/road-to-geneva/associated-events/

<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.environmentalpeacebuilding.org/conferences/road-to-geneva/associated-events/__;!!OToaGQ!7Mhg6MlvBSiPC1GXtHByenquKfXt23H2K25sAl3L9emTvch8DBbq6d-BPlsmcdD-YG5n$>
).

The conference will examine ways to improve environmental governance to
support peace in Colombia. It will consider approaches being innovated in
Colombia and potentially other lessons from other conflict-affected
countries.

We are currently accepting abstracts for presentations and poster sessions
for the conference. Participating in this conference would give you a
virtual platform to share your work internationally, either through formal
presentation and/or smaller poster sessions. We are exploring the
possibility of publishing an edited volume with selected papers from the
conference. With these opportunities in mind, if you have any ongoing
research related to environmental governance and peace in Colombia that you
would like to share, please submit your abstract here

[gep-ed] Forum submissions on race, racism and global environmental politics

the editors of *Global Environmental Politics* would like to invite forum
submissions on race, racism and global environmental politics. We would
welcome a wide range of forum pieces that explore race and racism in the
practice, analysis, and lived experience of scholars of global
environmental politics. As a reminder, forum articles comprise short
commentaries (2000-3000 words, including footnotes and bibliography) that
should stimulate discussion on salient issues of interest to other scholars
in the field. The aim of these articles is to provoke thought, discussion,
and debate amongst the readership. Articles for the Forum section typically
receive two single-blind reviews. We especially encourage junior scholars
and Phd students to submit. We, of course, always welcome research article
submissions on these topics as well.

[gep-ed] Global Environmental Politics Call for papers on disasters and crises

2020-03-26 Thread Erika Weinthal

Good afternoon,

We (the editors of Global Environmental Politics) hope that everyone is
staying safe and healthy in this crisis.

For those interested, we are putting out a call for a special section/issue
on disasters and crises as a way for the GEP community to continue to
contribute to important discourses about issues of paramount importance.
Details below.

Be well.

Best,

Steven Bernstein, Matt Hoffmann, Erika Weinthal

*Global Environmental Politics*

Call for Papers

“The politics of crises and disasters”

Corona Virus. Fires in the Amazon and Australia. Floods in Indonesia.
Locusts in Sub-Saharan Africa. Disaster and crisis have always been part of
the human condition, but it is increasingly obvious that cross-cutting and
cross-fertilizing disasters and crises driven and fuelled by environmental
change and globalization are part of the new “normal.” The editors of *Global
Environmental Politics* invite paper proposals (for forums, research
articles, and research notes) on the politics of crises and disasters for a
special section (or special issue). Now, more than ever, we need to have a
rigorous, evidence-based conversation on how humanity can navigate an era
that may be dominated by crisis and disaster and the *GEP* community is
well-placed to contribute to that discourse.

Please send abstracts (up to 200 words) for consideration to
gepjour...@gmail.com by April 15 (if possible--we are certainly flexible on
this given all that is going on)

Reviews of selected papers will be expedited with the goal of having the
special section/issue published in Issue 21-1 (January 2021).

Re: [gep-ed] monitoring fishery quotas

2010-03-18 Thread Erika Weinthal

Hi all,

I took the opportunity to ask a colleague who is a fisheries economist
whether such data exists. He responded that the costs of monitoring IUU
fishing are extremely contentious given how much area would need to be
accounted for and the limited enforcement infrastructure, especially in
developing countries. In short, he could not name a paper that estimates
such costs credibly.

Best,
Erika

*Subject:* [gep-ed] Costs of monitoring ocean fisheries

Hi everyone,

Please excuse the potential naïveté of this question, but I’m trying
to find out if anyone’s estimated the total costs of what it would
take to effectively monitor global fisheries. Not looking for
enforcement estimates, but just what it would cost (1) to improve
current extraction estimates and (2) to get a good handle on the
actual extent of IUU (illegal, unregulated underreported)
fisheries. In essence, what would it cost to make a fisheries
biologist happy? (Don’t think about that question for too long)

I blandly told my class today that if we can analogize IUU to a
“Darth Vader” form of “monitoring,” and if we accept the estimated
monetary value of IUU of ~10b (a very sketchy figure), then we might
be able to use the costs of IUU (nets, crew, boat maintenance, wifi
access, lattes, etc.) as a proxy measure for what it would cost to
monitor global fisheries (and assuming a profit, those costs have to
be ~$10b). Though I immediately turned to another subject in the
hopes that nobody wrote that spurious idea down in their notes, I am
still wondering if anyone’s made the estimates of the actual costs
of effective global monitoring. My current guess is that it would
far exceed the value of IUU, but it’s only a guess (kind of depends
on the extent of IUU—in a perverse sort of way, one would hope that
it would far exceed the value of IUU). Please send ideas to me, I’ll
collate, and then send back out to the list.

Thanks,

-Charlie
