RE: Highly relevant (not-to-be-missed) topics on Global Environmental Politics?

2009-09-29 Thread Shannon K. Orr
I can tell you a few of the topics that my students really get into in my class:

Diamonds - this is huge and every year I have students in my class just because
they've heard other students talk about this issue

Whaling - students love the 'vote buying' controversies and there are some
great youtube videos on the topic

Population policies - in particular I have students think about why people have
children, what is the role of government, NGOs, IGOs etc...

Food security - compare to obesity epidemic in the United States

E-waste - again there are some great youtube videos on this

Biodiversity - I talk a lot about food here -- how global food trends affect
biodiversity, cultural food differences (e.g. shark fin soup)

Hope this helps!
Shannon

Subject: Highly relevant (not-to-be-missed) topics on Global Environmental
Politics?

Dear all,

It's been a while since I have participated in the GEP-ED discussions.
Hoping the new semester is treating you well.

I am hoping to teach for the very first time (fingers crossed) a Special
Topics in International Relations with a focus on Global/International
Environmental Politics this January (undergraduate level). I'm trying to
design the syllabus in a way that I cover *most* of the highly relevant
topics in GEP/IEP. I am hoping to do a cursory review of several
international environmental treaties (Rotterdam, Stockholm, Kyoto and
the Copenhagen COP 15 rounds).

The question that has had me pondering for the past few weeks has been
whether there are any *key* topics that I should not miss in a course
like this. Climate change seems to have become a predominant topics in
the GEP literature, yet my own research interests (hazardous waste,
toxics, pollutant release inventories, wastewater) drive me to not want
to focus solely on climate change.

If you teach a GEP/IEP course, which subject topic would you say is a
must?

Thanks!
Raul

UNFCCC side event proposal - spots available

2009-08-21 Thread Shannon K. Orr
Hi Everyone,

For those planning to attend the climate change negotiations in Copenhagen I am
proposing a side event panel titled The Politics of Negotiations - Copenhagen
Reflections. My idea is to have panel members present papers, which will also
be posted on the UNFCCC side event website in advance, and then open the panel
up for discussion and comments from both panel members and the audience.
Papers can be preliminary, but should focus on the political aspects of the
negotiations.

If you are interested in participating please send me a short abstract (just a
few lines is fine) by August 25. There's no guarantee that we will actually
get a slot, but I figure it's worth a shot. I would know in early September if
we are successful. Please email me if you have any questions sk...@bgsu.edu

Thank you!

Shannon

Environmental Policy Failures compiled list

2008-06-03 Thread Shannon K. Orr
Thank you so much to everyone who replied with examples of
environmental policy failures. It was depressing but useful.
Below is the compiled list:

Shannon

- collapse of the cod fishery in Newfoundland
- European emissions trading scheme
- Yellowstone Wildfires
- Sharks are being torn out the ocean, but as by-catch, and no-on
pays attention to by-catch and beyond that sharks have little
salience in policy circles (here CITES has been neutered-- we
only have 4 sharks listed, one on the strict list but almost all
the great sharks have collapsed).

- Coral reefs, mangroves, and sea grass communities are getting
shredded. Mangroves have many domestic laws protecting them as
commons, but the same countries sanction enclosure and tearing
them down for shrimp ponds.
- US failure to sign Kyoto
- the fizzle of the National Acid Precip. Assess Project...
- why the local public utility commission doesn't promote least
cost procurement that includes energy efficiency and/or renewable
energy, and internalizes true socio-environmental costs of all
energy alternatives

environmental policy failures

2008-05-17 Thread Shannon K. Orr
Dear Gep-Ed list,

I am trying to get a jump on my syllabus for fall and I'm a bit
stuck. I'm trying out a new assignment whereby my students will
be researching an environmental policy failure and trying to
theorize the reasons for the failure (eg institutional
shortcomings, lack of public will, policy theory failure etc..).
I have a short list of failures but would appreciate any and all
suggestions from list members (domestic or international are
welcome). Please email me directly ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and I will
compile them for the list.

Thank you!

Shannon

list of campus environmental films

2008-02-19 Thread Shannon K. Orr
Thank you to everyone who responded with suggestions about
environmental films to show on campus. For those who are
interested, the suggestions were:

The 11th Hour
Everything's Cool
The Planet
Sharkwater
Manufactured Landscapes

Also, Al Gore's group The Climate Project was suggested as a way
to engage in an updated discussion about Climate Change as a
trained presenter will come to campus to present.

Thank you everyone!

campus movie night

2008-02-12 Thread Shannon K. Orr
Dear gep-eders,

My graduate students in Environmental Management are organizing
Earth Day events as part of their course requirement. One group
is interested in showing An Inconvenient Truth. I have two
questions:

1) Is there still some way to show this for free - if I remember
correctly some organization was sponsoring campus showings, but I
couldn't find it when I searched.

2) Is there a better movie to show on campus? It seems like
while still relevant, the buzz about the movie is pretty much
over. I know we've compiled lists of movies to show in classes,
but are there any suggestions for a movie worth showing as part
of a campus Earth Day celebration?

Thank you!
Shannon

national parks

2005-09-08 Thread Shannon K. Orr
I am working on a research project on business interests in
Banff National Park (Canada) and I was wondering if anyone
could identify other national parks in the world that also have
a significant commercial presence (i.e. retail stores,
restaurants, pubs etc...). If you respond to me directly at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I will compile a list and post it for all.

Thank you everyone!
