Hello,I have a simple question. Today (saturday)I bought a gerbil but theperson didn't tell me that you should get two. SoI did not no untilI got home. IfI were to get another one on monday from the same pet store would they fight. Also we think it is a girl, would they fight? Thank you, Katelyn Noakes

Re: [GML] (no subject)
Our two females do this also (just yesterday in fact). It seems to be connected to their heat cycle. The one who is in heat will mount the one who is not. They basically seem to have PMS. They will appear to be having a conflict of personallities for about a day (can't stand to sleep next to each other, more mock fighting etc.) and then (ususally by nighttime) they are best friends again and cuddle up for the evening. I think the longest this behavior has lasted is about a 1.5 days. We can tell when one of our girls is in heat by rubbing along their back. If they are in heat, they will bow their tail/rump up toward your hand. They sometimes like/ respond well to a light back-rub/massage when being held during that time. I hope this helps. You're lucky she accepted a younger male so easily. This isn't the norm. Secondly, unless you're meaning to breed, I would find another cage mate for her. And thirdly, if this is happened with the introductions just being made, then she is probably a submissive gerbil, and she's just getting used to another gerbil in her tank. Give them a week or so, and they should be just dandy. And I must stress, unless you really want the responsibility of breeding gerbils (they can have a LOT of babies in their life time), finding another same sex mate for your female. Or finding a castrated male. :) -Jackie and The Copper Dragon Clan We just rescued a gerbil who is a one and a half year old female. After reading up on them, we found that she may want a roommate. We picked up a male that is probably 4 months old or so. They don't fight, but when he is in the same part of the condo, she hides in her wheel or somewhere else. They groom each other with him on the outside and her in, but I want to know if she is scared or just shy. My Trixie was closer to giving birth than I thought - we now have three new little squeakers! One dark-eyed and two red-eyed. I notice there are some different behaviors with this particular pair. For one, they don't mate the day of birth. Trixie refuses! They do the day after, though. And when I got up this morning (she gave birth late last night) I saw Sheridan was already in the nest with Trixie and the pups. I thought this rather interesting as fathers usually stay away the first day. I wanted to tell everyone something. I have been using pine bedding for 4 months now and have had no problems with my gerbils. They also like penuts. I do have a ? though. I put two males and to females together and they get along great but what will happen when they have babies
No Subject
Ok, there are mixed views on pine bedding - but I do know this from experience. If you intend to breed, DO change to aspen or some other allergen free bedding. The pups can and most likely will develop respiratory problems so acute that they will die. I'd hate for this to happen to you. If you're not breeding however, I do have a gerbil that seems to do MUCH better on pine than aspen. Some gerbils may have problems with pine, but others have problems with other kinds of bedding. I say use whatever suits the gerbil best, and is just as easy on your pocket as well. As far as putting the 2 males and 2 females together, I would strongly advise against it, but only from what I've heard from others. I have no first hand experience with such a situation, and I have no care to. If and when one of the females has babies, I would strongly suggest you find another tank to put the other female in, perhaps with one of the males (so she doesn't get lonely), as the non-mother will most likely steal, maim, or destroy the pups of the mother. Of course, if you have no interest in breeding, than I suggest you split them up into same-sex pairs. Even closely related gerbils will breed with one another. Good luck! -Jackie I wanted to tell everyone something. I have been using pine bedding for 4 months now and have had no problems with my gerbils. They also like penuts. I do have a ? though. The father will mate with the mother and the daughter. And once the daughter gets big enough to have babies the mother and her will start to becomeing aggressive tworde each other. Eventualy the will start stealing each others babies (killing them) and fighting. So it is not a good ide to keep a mother daughter father trio. Anyways I wanted to know if anyone could tell me how to tell the age of the parents? I got them from a petstore and they belonged to someone else but they could not keep them. I have two gerbils that I got about 2 weeks ago. They just gave birth to 7 heathy babies this morning. I now have a few questions to ask since this is my first litter. Were you planning on having pups, or was this a surprise? If you got these guys from the same place, it is likely that they are brother and sister. And as there's no way to know how many generations they have been inbred (some pet stores sell what is given to them from the people they sold them to, so brother and sister mate, pups are put together in the pet store, sold unsexed, that brother and sister mate, have pups, and so forth). If they are brother and sister, it would probably be best to separate them once the pups are around 4 weeks old or so. Put the boys with the dad, and keep the girls with the mom, to help with the next litter that is probably on the way. Right after birth, gerbils come into heat, so it's likely your female is pregnant again. I have seen both of the adults move the babies alot. Is this ok for them to do? They spit up the babies and then they will put them back together and then take one and move it somewhere else. I'm afaid that one of the babies will die because it gets cold. Will that happen? Are they in a room with a lot of activity? Are you handling or otherwise disturbing them a lot. Sometimes first time parents get nervous, and will continue to move the pups until they feel they are in a safe place. If you keep them in a common room, move them to a quieter room. If they are already in one, then perhaps they are just nervous parents period. Just check on them once or twice a day to make a head count of pups, and make sure that all are accounted for, even if they aren't all in the same nest. A pup can die from neglect, but usually gerbils are quite good parents, so I don't think that you should over-worry yourself about it. My second question is that one of the babies looks like it might be blind. The others have dark spots on their eyes but this one is all pink. Is it blind?? Most likely he his pink because his eyes will be pink, which means you have gerbils with the recessive gene. If you learn the parents genetics, you can be more sure of exactly what color he may turn out to be. There are many good sites to find more information on breeding, etc. Someone was kind enough to post quite a few awhile back, so I have copy and pasted the information here. Please help me determine the true color of my gerbil. Someone suggested Sage may be spotted lilac rather than spotted dove. I suppose this is possible, but he is So light really , and I am taking the photos with flash off and using Enhance on Photo Suite 3 so that he does not appear as white as he does when I use flash. Hi Jade, Since you are the only one that has seen Sage in person you are the best judge to his actual color. If you have compared him to the picture on the AGS Color Strip and he looks most like a Spotted Dove, then go with your impression. We understand that flash and lighting can change the color of a gerbil dramatically. I am having the same trouble getting an accurate picture of my current litter. Hi people, I've noticed in the three days that I got my Poke-poke and still-nameless-new-baby back from my sister that the baby seems to eat and DRINK an awful lot. Definitely more than what Poke-poke and Ding-dum did at the same age, maybe three times as much. Is this normal? Definitely there's lots more poopies and peepees than before... I suppose what goes in must come out. They're normal though, not wet or diarrhea. He also seems to like eating in the toilet dish despite my chastisements. I'm guessing he's about ten weeks old. Re: (no subject)
If you would like to breed gerbils then I have a fewcomments that I would like tosay you (I really wish I had someone who said these things to me before we started to breed them) 1) Gerbils are so cute and loveable.but they get REALLY expensive REALLY fast! We have a bit of luck that the owner of the pet store that we frequent gives us really good deals on food and everything else he carries that we can use for the babies. For 6 gerbils we are averaging around 60 bucks (canadian) a month (for cages, new cages if one of us accidently breaks a cage...which has happened, food, treats, a gerbil breeders first aid kit, a regular gerbil first aid kit and anything and everything else that comes up) 2) Vets are also expensive..and in smaller towns I have met ppl on here that know more then the vets here 3) It is HARD to find good homes for gerbils (and if you are going to breed then you have to find a GOOD home for them...and pet stores are seldom* to be seen as a good home) 4) It is heart breaking to see the babies grow up and leave Just a few things to think about.plus I dont recomend that ppl breed any animal till they are experienced with the animal Just my 2 cents worth BTW Congrats on your two cuties :) (and EVERY gerbil is a cutie) Heather Aaron Foxy Jaws Molly Donte Skittles Hoppy *note- I say seldom because most pet stores have no clue what they are doing with gerbilsour babies came from a pet store where the owner told us that cedar was perfectly fine for them, she picked them up by the end of their tails, has told ppl that gerbil treats work great as their regular diet, and sells gerbils that are VERY afraid of ppl (it has taken 2 months to get the older ones used to me and my boyfriend. But the pet store that we frequent knows VERY much about gerbils, has given us much information, and when we brought the 2 babies we had been unable to find homes for and had no room for them at the time, he was very good about moving them, gave them a large aquarium (a 20 gallon), and has spent time with them every day he is there (which is every day except sundays) And gets to know any person well before he sells them the gerbils I know this is a sore spot to many ppl (gerbil breeders supplying pet stores) So i ask that if you want to get mad at me then please do it to me privately...I know it gets irritating seeing the fights on here.. I agree with pretty much everything you said, but wow! $60 a month for 6 gerbils! I Never really kept track but even when I had about 60 gerbs (counting babies) I never spent more than $20-30 a month on food and bedding and a few toys. Of course, that's not counting all the aquariums and stuff I had to buy to begin with. I certainly lost alot of money though, you're right. ;) My big problem was waterbottles. They would go thru at least 1 or 2 a month. Finally started using those plastic hangy Quick Quenches. They have only destroyed 2 or 3 of them in the past 2 yrs (mostly by climbing them and chewing off the plastic loop, not actually damaging the bottle) Elizabeth

They have only destroyed 2 or 3 of them in the past 2 yrs (mostly by climbing them and chewing off the plastic loop, not actually damaging the bottle) Elizabeth At 250 cages, monthly bills ran thus: $104 for 200# custom mix feed $10 for fresh food (carrots, apples, etc-scratch-n-dent-specials) $10 for milkbones by jumbo boxes for hamsters [2 boxes of 'large'] $15 for six waterbottles, others dying of old age and missing o-rings and getting gnawed $10 for vet bill misc and bandaid bill $15 for misc housing (buying a sheet of expanded metal mesh or another leaker at a rummage sale, etc) $6 bedding, two bales $5 cleaning supplies (bleach, soap, odoban, etc) $5 for gas $10 for utilities (water, electricity) $3 ads So you see, that if you're spending more than roughly a buck a cage a monthyou're buying lots of extras. I figure that a cage holds two gerbilsand between one and two hamsters depending on the breed. Now mind you I figure a setup is around $30 each...and I didn't figure those in because I no longer have that many cages/tanks/setups in service. I scrounged a lot (got the tanks free for the hauling, got a lot of the metal mesh on clearance and throwaways, etc) Things like gnaw wood, I have lots from neighbors and my hubby's wood projects (apple tree trimmings and white pine chunks) TP rolls, I had 'the network' that saved them for me. [and the figures are for those of you who wondered how much it really costs...other than floor space and time, to run a large rodentry...once you have things set up it isn't that much to maintain other than time] Deb Rebel's Rodent Ranch

Re: (no subject)
There are several reasons why this is important for posters to realize (incidentally, yours are posts that show up blank on my screen due to html). Some people pay per minute to download messages- html messages, fancy fonts and such can take longer to download and thus cost people more money. If you are posting with a serious question or emergency, don't you want everyone to be able to read your message and respond as quickly as possible? I have noticed that several of the people who have commented on not being able to read the messages are some of the true veteran listmembers who have a great deal of experience and some a veterinary background. In an emergency situation, these people could give you advice to save your gerbils life- but not if they can't read your message. Hello fellow-gerbil lovers! I just brought my girl (a lilac) to my friend's house for a month, since we are going on vacation. I am sooo sad! I miss her already! I cringed when my friend's little brother came bounding in with an announcing shout. I am so worried about her already! I hope I can still have an enjoyable vacation! To think, a whole month before I get to bring her home again! A sad gerbil owner, Katie Katie http://saddleclick.homestead.com http://candcritters.homestead.com Have a great day and God Bless!

I would be patient and certainly don't chase them around the tank. That would only frighten them more. Not to imply that you are doing that, just a warning. :) Just spend LOTS of time just sitting with your hand in there, eventually their curiousity should compel them to come investigate. It sounds to me like they came to you without much experience with humans, or else they're unusually shy. It will take a lot of patience. Hopefully with time they'll begin climbing into your hand. Take it very slowly at that point. Once they seem used to you, you can slowly lift your hand up just a bit at first. I think somebody else has described this already. Yeah and remember each gerbil has a different personality. One of my young females will gladly jump in my hand, but the big male is more cautious and sometimes nips me when he thinks I have been there to long. He is very protective of his clan. I usually let him out first and then after that I play with the others. Each one is different. Ive had that problem with Molly and Donte (the parents) and I went through about 4 weeks of it with Foxy and JawsWhat i did to get them used to me was for about 15 minutes a day to put my hand palm down in the cage, and let them sniff, crawl around on it (i didnt pick them up at this time) and then as they got more used to my hand being in there I started to move it an inch or so off the bedding and hold it there.then when they got comfortable with that I was able to lift them farther up! Now I can get them out (when they want to be held) and I have a half a habitrail tube that i use to trick them when i need them out of the cage :) Heather Foxy, Jaws, Molly, Donte, Skittles, Hoppy, Fluffy, Digger and Wheeler! - Original Message - From: Caroline Hussey To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, July 01, 2001 5:14 PM Subject: (no subject) I posted this sometime last week, but got no responce. OK everyone .. I have a question .. what causes dehydration in gerbils? I Lose my sick Momma yesterday. She was feeding and didn't seem to be suffering from Respitory problems. Somone mention on this list the other day about dehydration and to try pedialyte which i did, unfortunately it didn't work. Now my other Momma is sick, she is thin and wobbly on her legs and lethargic, I put sme baby oatmeal in her cage and she is eating it. I also tried to give her some pedilyte by mouth but she didnt' seem to take much and she seems so frail I was afriad of hurting her. Both cages of gerbils have been on antibiotics for 2 weeks now so i am sure there is no signs of respitory. Please help, I would like to try and keep this mommy alive. Thanks ~Heather

Hi Jessica, Do you use a metal wheel? If you do, please consider taping the inside and outside with masking tape to prevent broken limbs and tails. As for the squeaking, when we have that trouble here we use a Q-tip and dab a little vegetable or olive oil in the area where the metal contacts metal. It works wonderfully! It has to be done again occasionally as the vegetable or olive oil dries up but I prefer to use vegetable/olive oil in case the gerbils might lick it. Hello all . I'm new to this .. I am having some problems with my gerbils. We have 2 females and 1 male. 1 female gave birth about a month ago to a tiny little litter of 2. After 2 weeks they were both dead. No apparent wounds. The other female gave birth the day before we lost these two. She had a litter of 4. They were about3 weeks old yesterday and I found 3 dead. I have since seperated the mother of this litter with the remaining baby and am hoping that it will survive and be a companion for her. My question is "why are the babies dying". I was wondering if perhaps the momma just wasn't taking very good care of the babies. They were in a pretty busy room in the house but I have since moved them to a quieter spot. Although this is both the females first litters it is not our first litters and previous to these ones we have had success. I was wondering if it would be possible to supplement the remaining babys food. It doesn't have it's eyes open yet but is running all over the cage, I wonder when it will be fully weaned. I was going to buy some baby oatmeal today to see if the baby woudl eat. I so want this one to live. Pleae help ~Heather

Can you give me any reason this would be happening. I use Carefresh as bedding!! This is usually an allergy, but can also be an infection of the nose caused by an infected wound, for example, by rubbing the nose while gnawing. sorry but I just have to tell someone that might be at least a little interested. after looking at some web pages displaying gerbil colours I have come to the conclusion that Bob is a colourpoint slate (aa,cbcb,gg), Shy is a slate (aa,Ccb,gg) and Blanche is a light ivory cream (AA,C[cb?],gg,pp) this is also backed up by the colours of their pups (Blanche's 3 grey agouti's and one pearl[?]so far and Shy's 5 slates and 3 colourpint slates) [yes she had four not three pups in her second litter, I must make the nest box more accessible] I also have them in two set-ups now (Blanche, Bob and Malky, and Shy and the rest off the pups [I want to keep one of the females in with her])
