I assume you are using the pre-packaged PHP and Apache components
(ala .rpm or .deb)

If so, I would strongly suggest building both of these from the source.

I build Apache and PHP from the source all the time because it gives me
far greater control over how they are built and what's included.
Typically, the preconfigured rpm stuff has problems beyond the "plain
vanilla" expectations of those who create those packages.

Here, I offer my typical configure settings for both to get you started.
They are configured for a Red Hat/Fedora Core system. Modify at will to
suit your tastes.

You can, of course, download the source from the PHP and Apache
websites.

The big advantage of building these pups from the source is that the
configure script automatically scans your system to see what's
available, and will balk if it can't find something it absolutely needs,
and typically configure alternatives if it can.

Another big advantage is that you don't have to wait for the latest
releases to find their way into the rpms or the debs.

One of my scripts does a 'make' and a 'make install' after running
'configure'. You may consider removing the 'make' commands and run them
manually.

In short, make sure the scripts fits your needs before running them.

As far as MySQL, I still rely on the .rpms but may get into building
even that from the source, eventually.

Feel free to give me a buzz at 603-557-5986 if you like, because I've
been reading my email sporadically lately.

Rats! Meant to send it to the list. Sorry, Ben...
So, what days and hours is the booth to be manned? There ought to be a
minimum of two people, and shifts of not-too-long a period: morning,
afternoon, evening? Make up some rules and post a grid like maddog had
for LinuxWorld, and I'll be glad to sign up for something. Thought
you'd be swamped with takers - apparently not.

RFC Rules and Schedule: - at least two people signed up at all times,
volunteers requested.

{Do booth bunnies get free admission?} {Probably not, but profits go to
the Shiners, so it's all in good cause...}

Additional people also welcomed. Please volunteer to bring something!
{What do we need? Laptop, distro CDs, power strips? }
Do we have any GNHLUG propoganda^H^H^H^H^H^H^H er fact sheets? Do we
have booth decorations, like a sign or banner? A giant inflatable
penguin?

GNHLUG's days at Hosstraders over. That doesn't have to be a bad

I've got 50 as well. I don't use it for posting, but rather, it's an
e-mail list archive for me :) All the lists I belong to are sub'ed to
this one address, and I use it for quick searching, since most lists'
archives rather suck. Gmail has, rather obviously, fantastic search :)

Yes Hosstraders!

2005-04-06 Thread Benjamin Scott
  This is an amalgamated reply.
To those complaining that I gave up too easy:
It got a bunch of people to reply, didn't it?
To those who have responded:
  *THANKS!!!*
To those wondering what Hosstraders is:
Sorry, I thought the recent traffic here was enough. Hosstraders, in it's
present form, is best described as "a flea market for geeks", although it
remains a hamfest (amateur radio gathering) at it's core. This spring, it
will take place at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds (about 15 minutes West of
Concord), on Fri 6 May and Sat 7 May. More information can be found at
http://www.qsl.net/k1rqg/ ("official" site) and http://www.hosstraders.com/
(unofficial). It's fun, trust me.

Admission and costs:
No freebies. Heck, I'm not even sure we still have a spot reserved (I need
to contact maddog about that). But it's only $5 to get in ($10 before 3PM on
Friday), and all the profit goes to help injured children. It doesn't get
much better then that. It's $10 for your own "seller's space", but GNHLUG's
own space (plus a little extra) will be covered. There's also a $10 fee for
overnight camping.

Qualifications:
A pulse. If you've used Linux, that's nice, too. Seriously, I'm asking
mainly for people to help evangelize Linux to a bunch of other geeks. I might
ask for someone to keep an eye on the both for a bit here and there (during
bio breaks and my own 'osstrading), but not a lot of that.

People with radio experience are especially welcome.
Scheduling:
I will arrive there no later then 7 PM Friday, and hope to be there first
thing in the AM. (Depends what my boss says.) I will be there all day
Saturday. Anyone is welcome anytime.

The busiest times (when help is most welcome) are Friday after 5 PM and
Saturday up until the raffle. Things usually start to wrap up around noon on
Saturday, and by 2 or 3 it's a ghost town.

Selling stuff:
Hosstraders is largely about buying, selling, trading, and exchanging
"stuff". I think I've seen just about everything except human organs for sale
at Hosstraders. For the GNHLUG booth, if we have space leftover (and we
usually do), we generally let GNHLUG'ers put their "stuff" up for sale, with
the only restriction that it be in some way compatible with Linux. Space will
be somewhat limited, so if you're bringing a U-Haul be prepared to buy your
own space.

Monitor this frequency^W list for further updates.
  Thanks again!

Here's the deal. Now I attach the drive ,and within SECONDS I get:

Sorry for the delay but I'm crazy running flat out.

Ok. I set up a virtual domain called localhost and set a symlink

ln -s /usr/share/wordpress .

to the DocumentRoot for that virtual domain.

I can log into mysql from the commandline using the account and password
that I set in the /etc/wordpress/wp-config.php

Then I browsed http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php

and all I get back is:

WordPress
Cant select database

We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username
and password is okay) but not able to select the wordpress database.

* Are you sure it exists?
* On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your
username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the
problem?

If you continue to have connection problems you should contact your host.
If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.

Is there something obvious I'm not doing?

This sounds very similar to problems I was having, except that I
actually saw kernel oopses.

Try a different kernel. I had the most success with Fedora's

/sbin/shutdown -h now doesn't?

2005-04-06 Thread Paul Lussier

This seems to have been a problem for years on Linux, but I've never
understood why. Every now and then I encounter a system where
shutdown, reboot, or halt doesn't. It just spits a message back at
you claiming the system is about to go down, but then nothing ever
happens. Does anyone have any idea why? It's really agravating.

Even more annoying is when you have 300+ machines, all running
*exactly* the same install, and the hardware is mostly all the same
(at least, there are groups of machines where the hw is identical)
that, say, 30 machines all shutdown fine, but one refuses.

Has anyone else ever noticed this *and* bothered to figure out why ? :)
I'd love to know!

Thanks

It's because at some point in your career, you've offended that
machine, and it's holding a grudge. It simply doesn't like you.
But don't worry, it's not just you... It doesn't like any of your
coworkers or your friends, either. You have had that much influence
on the thing. But it's probably not your fault at all -- some boxen
are just plain hornery, like rotweilers... =8^)

I've come across this a few times myself, but only on Red Hat 6.x
machines, AFAIK.
