Re: [GNHLUG] ManchLUG: Tuesday Oct 22nd @ The FARM in Manchester, NH
Reminder: ManchLUG meeting tomorrow (Tuesday 10/22)! Michael Kazin will be giving the monthly presentation on Icinga, an Open Source network monitoring system. Perhaps better known as a fork of Nagios, Icinga provides a robust solution for monitoring everything from routers and servers, to databases and websites, and much more if you're not afraid of a writing a custom plugin. Michael is a software engineer at LinkeDrive, a Boston start-up developing a driver-coaching application which helps truck fleets save fuel. He implemented Icinga to provide internal real-time monitoring of devices installed in customer fleets, as well as the company's server infrastructure. In his presentation, he will cover everything you need to get started on your own implementation: from basic concepts, to initial configuration, and on to writing a custom plugin. Hope to see you there tomorrow, details below: On Tue, Oct 8, 2013 at 11:06 PM, kenta wrote: > Join us Tuesday Oct 22nd for ManchLUG! > > This month Michael Kazin will be presenting on Icinga, an open source > monitoring system based on a fork of Nagios. > > Schedule: > 6:30 PM - Pre-meeting social. My solution is to use RSS feeds, but I have them set with search filters. So for example, I am constantly looking for Honda S2000's or parts for them. Reading the general Cars and Trucks feed would be insanity but you can build a search via their normal page then slap "&format=rss" to the end or the URL. Combine this with their limited query capability (http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/search) to exclude some things and you can get something like this: e.g. Search for "Honda S2000" in CTA (cars and trucks) minus "2000" and "2001" (model years that had plastic windows) with a price of $1-15000 and give it to me in rss: http://boston.craigslist.org/search/cta?zoomToPosting=&altView=&query=honda+S2000+-2000+-2001&srchType=T&minAsk=1&maxAsk=15000&format=rss There does appear to be a limit with the length of the URL or, maybe the number of search terms. I once tried to exclude a lot of things and if I recall the query did not return results. The key here is, query refinement. What's good is you can experiment using CL's standard page, then when you're done slap the "&format=rss" at the end and put that in your RSS reader. So, I combine about 5-6 different RSS feeds, with specific search terms and subscribe them all into Google Reader so I can use it seamlessly on my work, home, and mobile. Marking items as read as I see them and I don't see them again, minus those reposts, for which people who constantly repost to CL, sometimes every day. Re: [GNHLUG] Summer BBQ is Sat 8 Sept
I accidentally placed this on my calendar for this past Saturday and as such I showed up on Bruce's door step a week early. I'll be traveling next week so I wont be able to attend, however I wanted to send this to publicly thank Bruce for his hospitality and for the impromptu tour of Miles Smith Farm. What a great location! I highly recommend you all try to attend if you can. On Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 11:06 PM, Ben Scott wrote: > Who : You! Your fiends! Sounds good to me. I've been meaning to get in there to talk to the management and request the function room. [GNHLUG] BarCamp Manchester 6, Saturday November 12th
This Saturday: BarCamp Manchester. To quote from their site: " BarCampManchester is an un-conference BarCamp event held annually in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States. The goal of BarCampManchester is to bring technology professionals from the Greater Manchester area and New Hampshire together to learn and network. Unlike many conferences you may have been to, a BarCamp is free and all content is provided by the attendees. It provides a great opportunity to learn about cutting edge tools and technology from your peers. BarCampManchester is on Nov. 12th from 10:00am to 4:00pm" I try to make this event every year. If you've given a recent presentation, or would like to give a presentation I'm sure they'd always appreciate more presenters.Topics in the past have generally leaned more towards the technical, but of course it's really driven by who shows up and who chooses to present. Even if you're going to just listen and learn the topics generally vary greatly and the "law of two feet" applies. This is being held at the ABI again. ManchLUG needs a new home!
As you probably know there hasn't been a meeting of the Manchester Linux Users Group for several months. We've been on a summer hiatus and the closing of our usual venue, Wings Your Way, has been a problem. Manchester area GNHLUG'ers, I need your help. I'm looking for venues that can serve as potential future locations for ManchLUG meetings. The *ideal* location would: - Be located in Manchester, NH (It's ManchLUG after all!) - Have an area that can hold 15-30 people - Access to HD TV or Projector - Can be used free of charge - Internet Access - Food and drink We may not get all of these in a single venue. If this is the case, for meetings where we have a set speaker we could use an office type location (examples: library, the ABI, office) and for social meetings we could use a local restaurant. If any venues come to mind, please, drop me a line with your suggestions. Any leads would be appreciated. Once we figure out where to go, we'll be meeting again! -Kenta ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

Computer part recycling [was: New Year's Cleaning]
Along the lines getting rid of old hardware from the New Years Cleaning thread I've been doing some cleaning as well. What I'm trying to find is a recycler, preferably free of charge, that will take this legacy hardware (read: junk) off my hands. I know that some companies have recycling days but I didn't see any posted around my area (Nashua, NH). So far I have found: - Small Dog Electronics: Website says they'll take stuff for 35 cents a pound (I should have taken advantage of their recycling day!). - Best Buy: They have some kind of recycling program, but I don't know how they react when I show up with a box of hard drives and a box of ISA cards and mother boards. The info on their website seems geared towards small consumer electronics. - Nashua City landfill: Again, electronics seems to be geared towards PC's and small electronics. Their site says: "Electronics - computer monitors & components, printers, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, microwaves, etc. The first two per year are free. Additional items will be charged at $5 per item" Maybe I should find two old cases and fill every bay and every slot with drives and cards ;) Anyone know of other places to check? ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

The sessions presented that day are dependent on the attendees. At my house most GSM phones have either 1 bar or no coverage in the center of the house. In order to make and maintain a call you'd have to stand next to the window or go outside. CDMA phones varied and would usually maintain a single bar to 3 bars depending on the location in the house. I tried several antenna placement setups with the device. First we placed the external antenna in the window frame, ensured there was enough horizontal separation between it and the base unit (this was in their docs). Second we tested vertical separation by putting the external antenna upstairs. And lastly, we placed the external antenna about 20 feet outside the house. In all cases I saw little to no improvement in signal strength for the GSM and CDMA phones (ATT iPhone, Sprint BlackBerry, Samsung Verizon phone) despite all three antenna placements. Boxed it back up, shipped it back and got my money back. I'm not sure if I got a defective unit, or if it just didn't work as advertised. -Kenta ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

So I cordially invite you to join us two weeks from today to the first meeting of the new "ManchLUG" Location: Wings Your Way 1181 Elm St. Manchester, NH (Corner of Elm and Bridge) Date: Tuesday, August 24, 2010 Time: 6:30 for casual pre-meeting drinks and food 7:00 for "official" meeting. The agenda for this first meeting will be fairly loose. It will be more a gathering of *nix hobbyists and enthusiasts than a formal meeting with a set topic and speaker. We'll likely have a round table discussion over beverages and work out topics for future meetings. To facilitate and coordinate we've setup this event page: http://manchlug.eventbrite.com You do not have to sign-up for the event, but if you choose to it will help us with planning. Hope to see you in a few weeks. -Kenta ___ gnhlug-announce mailing list gnhlug-annou...@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-announce/ ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

I used it recently with Ubuntu 10 .04 on an aging Dell laptop (I don't remember the model, but it was about an 2 inch thick brick of a laptop). It too had a Broadcomm chip based wireless adapter and after an apt-get and hitting "OK" a few times I was on 'net in under 5 minutes. The alternative for broadcom's seems to be to setup NDISWRAPPER with the windows driver which takes some additional time. If my memory serves me correctly, a lot more of a hassle. -Kenta ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/
MerriLUG or Manchester meets planned? + Twitter
MerriLUG'ers we haven't met in a good long time. I remember having a conversation during the GNHLUG birthday-bash about having Manchester-area meetings in lieu of Nashua. Anything new on this? If any Nashua-area members want to assist me in putting together a MerriLUG meeting again, please e-mail me (off-list) and we can try to coordinate. Ideally, we should start with speakers. *** If you'd like to give a talk in Nashua, please please please let me know. *** Also, I've created a twitter list with several GNHLUG members on it, if you want to be added, drop me a line with your twitter username or mention me: @kentakoga and something about GNHLUG and I'll add you to the list. BarCampManchester is being held NEXT Saturday Sep. 26th from 9:30am to 4:30pm @ UNH Manchester. I know a few gnhlug'ers attend every year.  Unfortunately this year I wont be able to go as I'll be traveling. These user driven conferences tend to be more fun with more people so the more the merrier I suppose. Here are a sampling of some topics which have already been pre-posted to the website http://www.barcampmanchester.org/: - How to be a closed source business that supports the open source community - Immersive Environments: how to play when the computer is not a computer - Code Secrets - Web Analytics 101 - Understanding the Value of User Research, Usability Testing, and Information Geek Survival Guide For Working With Corporate Communications & Marketing Departments As always, anyone can present, when you show up and register (no charge) you can also write in your presentation topic for an available slot in the day. In the past there's been free swag and free food.  O'Reilly is listed so there will likely be some freebie books with animals on them. In past events there's been free coffee, soda, and also lunch (last year was pizza). I have no official affiliation with this event, but every year I've been it's been a great way to spend the day amongst fellow technology lovers, coders, and geeks. -Kenta ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

Displaying only data matching a pattern?
I've been working with some large files and need to extract a piece of info, unfortunately there's a bunch of junk around the part that I want. Example: foofoo:A1234567890B\barbar foofoo:C9234567890E\barbar foofoo:A8234567890B\barbar foofoo:F7234567890D\barbar What I had done the first pass to get what I wanted was to use sed and do a s/foofoo:// to get rid of the stuff in front, and then do the same for the \barbar in the back. However what would be easier for me is if I could just extract the pattern of [a-fA-F0-9] when they appear n times in a row. I couldn't seem to figure out if sed could display only the part I wanted. So I figured it'd be a better job for grep, however It appears that it's printing the entire matching line and I only want the match on the pattern to display. Otherwise, I want as an end result: A1234567890B C9234567890E A8234567890B F7234567890D Here's a caveat: I need to do this on a Windows box and am limited to using the ports of GNU utilities (using http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/) otherwise I'd do this in perl and wouldn't be asking :/ I'm thinking maybe I'm just missing something simple here. Re: Brute-Force SSH Server Attacks Surge -- InformationWeek
I ended up with the following config... Bind ssh to two ports: 22 and a non standard port In my firewall rules I specifically allow certain IP's to connect to port 22. These include my internal network (192.168) and a handful of IP's from other hosts that I interact with on a regular basis. Anyone can ssh to the non-standard point, but from what I've seen the attempts are few and far far between since most people aren't looking for it. I used to get a handful or a few hundred handfuls of ssh login failures when I was on just 22, now I get pretty much none. -Kenta On 5/15/08, Bob King <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > According to the Information Week article: > > > http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/attacks/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=207603339 > > > One of the more interesting bits was that the attacks are shifting to a > more distributed model to avoid detection by IDS/IPS systems, using botnets. > > Many distros come with ssh installed by default, and often with root access > allowed by default. Months ago I tried to get Beryl/Compiz effects working on my Edgy box with no luck. This is an older desktop machine with an ati rv350 card. However after a few tweaks to the xorg.conf and following some instructions they are working just fine under Feisty. I'm impressed with the eye candy features that linux has to offer, especially since these days people are making their ooo's and A's regarding Vista's look and feel. Rest of the features are nice. So far, everything works but I can't tell if a lot of it is because I'd already done a bunch of things to get them working under E.E. I like the inclusion of the Banshee Music Player. It's a music player I hadn't tried before. Amarok was croaking previously when trying to enumerate all my music to build it's DB. Songbird was incredibly slow. Some other players didn't have features I was looking for... like the ability to rate music, then create dynamic playlist (a.k.a "Smart Playlist") that will play music with a particular rating. Podcast support as well was a must-have. Banshee appears to do it all. My only gripe is that Hibernate is not working out of the box for some reason. Pushing the button says it will Hibernate my system however it doesn't. I haven't researched yet why this isn't working. Other than that, I'm happy with the Feisty install. Upgrade was cake, effects are slick, and *almost* everything works. -Kenta ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

Here is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file Sorry in advance for the long data. Some sections are commented out, showing what I have currently attemped to run with also. However, all I get when I run with some of these other settings is a blank screen. I am using a GeForce 3D Prophet III, which only allows the display of EITHER svideo, or analog, dualview is not possible (and is not being attempted). I recently moved to a nvidia 5200 series card because of issues with my ati 9250. All I had to do was plugin the Svideo cable and on startup the machine booted and I could see it on the TV immediatenly (BIOS screen, etc). If your card can't display on both analong/dvi & svideo then unplug the regular monitor before turning on the machine, then maybe it'll detect the SVIDEO connection. In my case xorg failed to start because of the ati driver so all I had to do was apt-get the nvidia driver, I reran "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and picked the nividia driver, then ended up running "nvidia-xconfig". Restarted and it booted right into my gnome desktop. My xorg.conf basically has: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" HorizSync 30.0 - 70.0 VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]" Driver "nvidia" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]" Monitor"Generic Monitor" Option "UseEvents" "True" DefaultDepth24 ##Note: trimmed out the depths 1-16## SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection Interestingly enough there were no config's specific to a TV-out that I could see, it just works and I'm plesantly surprised. Added in the UseEvents line per Jared's recommendation. Getting the 9250 working was a real pain. First of all it wouldn't display right from the boot and would show a rolling, unreadable screen. If there was a bios error or error before X then I'd have to hook it up to a real monitor and/or ssh in (if possible). The 9250 also seemed to require very specific settings to get working. Moving to a geforce 5200 was worth the 33 dollars :) While I'm blabbing... I just setup Democracy player (http://www.getdemocracy.com/) on the MythBox and it's working out as an excellent way to manage podcasts. So it's a nice UI, but more importantly settings to say "Keep these podcasts for 1 month" or "6 weeks" or "1 week" etc. So I let Democracy download and management how long I want to keep shows and set the data directory to dump into where "Watch Videos" is looking on mythtv. Now I can get my Rocketboom, DL.TV, and diggnation fix without having to scp/rsync them from another box manually. woot! -Kenta ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list gnhlug-discuss@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss/

Here's why: I have DVD burning issues. Once, when I was running an early SUSE 9.x release I was able to burn DVD's. Ever since moving to Ubuntu (Dapper/Breezy & now Edgy) the system wont recognize blanks. Yanked the drive the other day and it burns fine under another OS. I have yet to really dive into why there is no love for the dvd burner. I may run cdrecord to see if I'm having a similar issue here as Paul, but at this moment I don't recall what error was coming up. On the same machine I've tried to get beryl working to no avail. At one point I did get it loaded but it was absurdly slow so I don't count that as "working". Even without beryl I swear that gnome seems sluggish. The simple act of dragging a window around the screen isn't quite fluid. Tried both the 'ati' and 'fglrx' drivers with no noticable improvements. I'm starting to be an ATI hater so to top it off... Upgraded my MythTV box to a newer ubuntu release and with the new release I'd tossed on the newest ATI drivers. Now mplayer no longer works correctly to display full screen video unless I use the -vo x11 option which results in some playback choppiness and inability to zoom/scale the video as it's playing :( However after some research I guess ATI is to blame due to some issues with their driver.
