Monitor Question

2005-03-28 Thread Kenneth E. Lussier
Does anyone out there have a Dell E173FP LCD monitor? I just got a 2nd
flat panel, and it is slightly different then my first (Dell E171FP). I
can't seem to get the X settings quite right for it, so my dual monitor
setup is driving me crazy. If it matters, my card is an NVidia GForce
440 MX dual head. I'm running XF86 4.4.0. Any pointers on the settings
for this monitor would be much appriciated.

TIA,
Kenny

Monitor question

2002-08-27 Thread David Roberts

OK - I'm usually a lurker, but now I have a question. My current
monitor (nice old Multiscan 20seII) is dying and my support person
came by with a Sony SDM-S81 flat panel. Nice monitor, but I'm not
sure if it is supported. Visiting RedHat and Sony sites wasn't any
help either. This is my first TFT LCD and I have no idea what to
expect.

Anyone out there know:
  1. if I can get it to work or if I should say "No thanks."
  2. what parameters I'll need for the xconfig routine so I
 don't blow it up ;)

If it helps I'm running RedHat 7.1 (kernel up'd to 2.4.19)...

Thanks!

I may well have a pair of these connected in a dual-head display.
Ping me at work tomorrow, and I'll check.

You should be able to re-run Xconfigurator in text mode to make it
redetect your monitor. Kudzu might even pick it up on a boot... but I
wouldn't risk my own hardware on it.

To get to text mode if you're in X, hit control-alt-f1. If you're booting
at the lilo prompt go to Text mode and type linux single (or whatever
single) and it'll drop you into single user mode where you can run
Xconfigurator.

Holdonaminute. Time for me to go on a rant: I _love_ LCD panels.

When they're in digital mode.

IMHO, an LCD panel being driven with an anlog signal is worse than a CRT
-- frequently, I've even heard people say things like, "I've seen LCD
panels, and their output isn't all that good." It's clear that they
haven't seen a digital LCD panel, then. While everything that Mike said
is true, I'd only seriously consider getting it if it also has a DVI port.
You don't need to set it up now, but, if and when you do, it'll be a
night-and-day difference. Otherwise, if it doesn't, might I recommend
checking out how it looks vs. your current CRT, and see which you really
prefer. Obviusly, an LCD panel has a higher geek factor, which is always
attractive, but I wouldn't do it based on that alone when the actual stuff
being displayed looks worse.

Re: Monitor question

2002-08-29 Thread Hewitt Tech

An opportune question. Let me give my experience with a Samsung 150S LCD
panel (15") that I just aquired from Sam's for $350.

The panel AFAICT is strictly analog but is very bright and very sharp. So
far I've only used it with Windows 2000 but they have a Linux install
section in the single sheet of installation instructions that came in the
box!

The instructions are:

"To execute X-Window, you need to make the X86Config file, which is a type
of system setting file.

1) Press Enter at the first and the second screen after executing the
X86Config file.
2) The third screen is for setting your mouse.
3) Set a mouse for your computer.
4)The next screen is for selecting a keyboard.
5)Set a Keyboard for your computer.
6)The next screen is for setting your monitor.
7)First of all, set a horizontal frequency for your monitor.
(You can enter the frequency directly).
8)Set a vertical frequency for your monitor. (You can enter the frequency
directly.)
9)Enter the model name of your monitor. The information will not affect the
actual execution
of X-Window.
10)You have finished setting up your monitor.
Execute X-Window after setting other requested hardware."

The above is pretty much verbatim what is on the one page installation
sheet. Apparently the person who wrote this in not a native English speaker
but you've got to admit they at least tried which is more than most
manufacturers. No where do they actually tell you what the horizontal or
vertical frequencies are supposed to be but I suspect this is very easy to
do.

RE: Monitor question

2002-08-29 Thread Brian B. Riley \(N1BQ\) ListAcct

The only thing to remember is that most LCD monitors are maximized for a
single resolution. Check the docs for that monitro and found out what it is
and setup your system for that res. Then hook it up. when I hooked my NEC
LCD up i wasn't thinking and just plugged it in hwere a 15in CRT had been
and of course I had trash ..., Had to go back and set the computer to
1024x768 using the old monitor , then put the LCD on and reboot ... wokred
like a champ.

Well, you certainly shouldn't say 'no thanks'! That panel takes an
analog input, so it shouldn't be difficult to get it to work.

The specs that I can find for that monitor indicate that it maxes
out at 1280x1024, with a max vsync of 85 Hz and a max hsync of 92 kHz.
That should be all the information xf86config needs to set up the monitor.
