Re: RH Update
I updated a laptop at work from 7.3 to 8.0 with no problems, even though it didn't have any of the updates, I just think there is a driver issue somewhere with version 8.0 and my hardware. RH Update
Well, just for the record. I updated my laptop from RH 7.2 to RH 8.0 tonight and it went without any real hitches. Only thing was, the Installer failed to make a boot floppy. I was able to make one manually with no problem after the upgrade was done. I had also been keeping the 7.2 install up to date with the laters RPMs, not via up to date but by mirrogin updates.redhat.com and mounting the mirror over NFS and installing manually. ___ gnhlug-discuss mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-discuss

Now and then I'll try an upgrade that ought to be easy, such as RHL 7.2 -> 7.3. I'm constantly amazed at the subtle ways the installer finds to screw up. I tried a fresh RHL 8.0 install on my laptop. Everything worked fine except that my Cisco Aironet 340 Wi-Fi card wouldn't associate with the access point. No amount of fiddling with various versions of the driver helped. I suspect that the problem had something to do with changes in the networking startup sequence, such that the card didn't have enough initialization time, but judicious use of 'sleep' didn't help either, and I eventually went back to 7.3. -- Roger -- Roger H. RE: RH update
I put a winky face :-P I was just messin' anyway, I really want to try 8.0 And I run windows for the following reasons: My USB CF/SM reader only kinda works in linux (the CF side works, the SM side doesn't.. It's been a known bug for over a year yet nobody has fixed it.. I would, but I'm not a programmer) My scanner doesn't work (Snapscan 1212u, yes, it should, but it doesn't) I -NEED- Office for my wife to use for school crap I use the windows movie editor to do stuff with my MiniDV camera and there's nothing out there for linux that does it as nicely.. Of course I wish it would output the stuff in mpeg. But with that being said I have a linux (Gentoo) box that I tinker with to learn things, a RH7.3 box that's the scootz.net/guster.net server, my windows box does dual boot into RH7.3 and I have a Powerbook that was a dual boot OS9/YellowDog Linux box until OSX came out (now it's OSX 10.2) > -Original Message- > From: Ben Boulanger [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Saturday, November 16, 2002 6:42 PM > To: Chris > Cc: Travis Roy; 'gnhlug Group' > Subject: Re: RH update > > > Hey Chris, > Don't pay attention to Travis's laugh - he runs windows. > > What RedHat screen does it hand at? Hey Chris, Don't pay attention to Travis's laugh - he runs windows. What RedHat screen does it hand at? Can you be more specific there? Can you hit ctrl-alt-f1 and get a text login prompt, login, and run startx? It sounds like some part of the init for gnome or kde is failing... doing it that way might give more debugging information.
