I also was going to say win4lin, Also, VMWare isn't an emulator, it's a
virtual machine, there's a BIG difference.. I think win4lin is also a
virtual machine.

Though it's not an emulator, you may be thinking of bochs and/or
plex86. Plex86, I believe, was a fork of bochs that was dead for a
while, but I think it's been revived and can be found on
savanah.gnu.org. bochs is at http://bochs.sourceforge.net/

Re: another windoze emulator

2003-01-07 Thread Jerry Feldman
Technically it is, but it is limited to running a single copy of Windows
9x. (Of course, some of us may not consider Windows 9x and operating
system).
Win4Lin does a pretty decent job by allowing the user to run a complete
copy of Windows9x. One advantage of this over WINE (and CrossoverOffice) is
that virtually every Windoz program can run with very few exceptions.
Another advantage of this over VMWare (other than cost) is that the Windows
file system is simply a subdirectory in your Linux native file system.
Performance is better than VMWare (although VMWare is the better product).

Win4lin Performance (was: another windoze emulator)

2003-01-07 Thread Tilly, Lawrence
Mandatory Tangent Post:

Anyone w/ direct experience using win4lin to run W9x games? I'm not too interested in
the latest & greatest shooters. I'm mostly a strategy/rts/city-builder addict (and
many of the ones I like are 1+ years old), so I don't care if it can throw 3 billion
frames / second. However, I do like smooth graphics under those games, and a
responsive interface is critical. Games are one of the main reasons I keep a
"Wintendo" installation of W98 on my machine.

As example, some of the ones keeping me mostly distracted are MechCommander, Pharaoh,
Star Fleet Command & Stronghold

Re: Win4lin Performance (was: another windoze emulator)

2003-01-07 Thread Ken D'Ambrosio
The performance is good. Games, however, are another ball o' wax.
Windows uses DirectX (?) to do funky stuff with writing directly to video
memory and the like -- this is pretty un-portable. I know that there are
parties trying to make it work, but I have no idea where they are in the
process. In a nutshell: if your games require DirectX, don't even
bother. (Note: last time I used Win4Lin was 3.x; for all I know 4.x has
remedied this.)

For games, I've had surprising success with Wine. For example, I once had
StarCraft running very well under Linux, using Wine. And StarCraft is a
very DirectX-ish game, with lots of side scrolling, and lots of cinematic
cut scenes. As I recall, it took some tweaking to get it to work, but it
did work.

2003-01-08 Thread Jason Stephenson
Yes, I had Star Craft working on my laptop with Wine and RH 7.2. I
haven't tried it since upgrading to RH 8.0.

It uses DirectX 5, and most games that do should work. These are older
games. I've heard that someone got War Craft III working with either
Win4Lin or Wine, but I haven't actually seen it, or maybe that was with
VMWare?

Since I use FreeBSD for my "real work" and Windows only for games, I
made my workstation dual boot. I jokingly refer to my FreeBSD uptime as
MTBWCIII (Mean Time Between War Craft III).

Thanks to you both for the first-hand info, Jason & Ben!! I'm pretty confident
StarCraft is at least as resource and DX intensive as anything I currently play, so I
guess I'll look more into Wine than win4lin.

I play warcraft III all the time - even host games. I run transgaming's
winex stuff, works great. I also play/run Diablo II Lord of Destruction
as well as some older ones, like Heroes of Might and Magic III and Total
Annihilation. If you need any help with this stuff, let me know.
