Keyboard layouts in Gnome >= 3.8
Hi everyone, Keyboard layout settings in gnome 3.8 (which I am using in Fedora 18) are very trimmed down compared to gnome 3.6 I am also translating xkeyboard-config - so I really cannot find the multitude of settings it presents in my current install. For example - there are settings for Euro sign (and other currency symbols), behaviour of CapsLock, positioning of keys, the possibility to change the keyboard layout change key to something traditionally used rather than a keyboard shortcut that will not work when the layout is changed (because Latin characters are not available in Cyrillic layouts) Is this part of the trimming down of settings, is this something Fedora specific, or are we in some state of transition that will change for gnome 3.10? I am asking here because gnome-i18n people are most likely to have stumbled upon this. Speaking of keywords: When translating - I add the Bulgarian translation and then copy and add the English original because people will search and expect both the translated and the original version. Possibly stuck statistics for gtk+ for Bulgarian
Hi, I have updated the translation of gtk+, I have verified that it is already in Gnome repo, I have checked the version of intltool-update (0.50.2) - but statistics stay below 100% Could they be stuck? Re: Bad translations of key names
I think the main misunderstanding stems from the lack of knowledge what we need these strings for. I just checked Bulgarian translation. My guess when translating the strings was that these have some correspondence to the labels printed on your physical keyboard. Thus "Tab" and "Scroll_Lock" became "Tab" and "Scroll Lock" since this is printed on the physical keyboards here in Bulgaria, even on localized keyboards that have Cyrillic letters printed on the alphabet keys. There are countries that this does not hold true - for example Germany - they translate the labels on the physical keys as well. Since there is no label such as XF86MonBrightnessUp I translated that expecting that the key would have some kind of picture that corresponds to its function and the user will have to find the correspondence rather than literal repetition. Bastien, can you elaborate in the comments what these strings are actually used for, where the user will meet them, their purpose, what commands/applications/dialogs employ them, rather than the way you expect them translated. What happened to the follwoing obsolete packages
Hello everybody, I am doing a little housekeeping for the Bulgarian Gnome Translation team Subversion repository. We have the following orphaned modules: deskbar-applet.master.bg.po eel.master.bg.po gail.master.bg.po gnome-build.master.bg.po gnome-mag.master.bg.po gnome-netstatus.master.bg.po gnome-system-tools.master.bg.po gnome-vfs.master.bg.po gok.master.bg.po lsr.master.bg.po swfdec-gnome.master.bg.po All of them are obsolete and some of them no longer can be found in http://l10n.gnome.org/module/ Most of them are so obsolete that they are no longer even in obsolete release set: http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/bg/obsolete/ui/ Still - these have been part of some GNOME release in the past, and I would like to keep the translated strings for reference. Is there another special place I can look at to guess what happened to these modules? Difficulty updating translations
Hello, GNOME translation statistics show that there are strings for the following modules for Bulgarian to translate or unfuzzy: http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/bg/gnome-3-4/ui/ hamster-applet: 3 gedit : 8 evolution : 4 However when I update (git checkout master, git pull --rebase) the modules from git and run intltool-update - I get that there are no strings to translate. I tried updating intltool with the upstream sources from Launchpad's bazaar, but the result is the same. As far as I can see - all branches are master. Warnings and notifications on adding and removing modules
Hello everyone, Currently whenever a developer commits a change in a module in the main GNOME moduleset we get a warning via this mailing list. This is extremely useful: - This keeps the string freezes and prevents excessive breaks; - This immediately informs translation teams. Can we please have similar *automated* system for the list of modules in the moduleset? This will be of immense help to everyone and especially translators: - This will provide list and backlog of what modules are in the moduleset, what are no longer there, how long were they there, when they entered and when they left. - Adding a module is in fact a string break as far as translators are concerned - there are new strings to translate and modules to test. - Removing a module lowers it priority when translating, teams should be well aware of that and prioritize their resources. Sergey, The update is really massive. I do not mean to be disrespectful, but why did this happen? Since I am also the coordinator of Bulgarian at the Translation project, I have kept a close eye on your module. As you can see from: http://translationproject.org/domain/xkeyboard-config.html I have translated 100% of 2.1-pre1's 769 strings. When I updated to 2.1.99, the stats are: 362 translated (47%) 426 fuzzy (55%) 145 untanslated (19%) 141 obsolete (18%) Percents are relative to 2.1-pre1's strings This is really a *huge* change for a in-version transition and you give out quite a short notice. I thought that I had made proper planning for your module because it is visible and important part of the configuration of the graphical interface. GNOME 3.0 is a hard target for us, I do not know if my team will make it to 100%. Still we do have a second chance as there will be a subsequent release of 3.0.1 about a month later, distros will actually ship it or extremely quickly migrate to it. xkeyboard-config has 3 releases a year as this page states: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/XKeyboardConfig/ReleaseSchedule If we miss 4 April (and this is likely), will you do an interim point release? Furthermore, the same page promises a two week string freeze period. The TP robot mailed me today, this corresponds to 9 of April, not 4. And lastly - your project is definitely not new. On the contrary, it is well established, with FD.O history going back to 2007, and GNOME history before that (and I know because I have been translating this project for almost a decade as seen from the bg.po headers). Please think of some kind of message string stability - you *do* have the experience for that. Again - no disrespect for your project which I use every day, but please consider translators' tribulations as well. Translated gcalctool stops working

Khaled, Just do your own splitting of files. Splitting can be done with different strategies. Schema messages apart from the rest is one possible strategy, splitting gnome-games based on the game is another possibility. I have done splitting of po-files based on the size of strings for example - 1-300 chars -> 1st file, 301-500 -> 2nd file, etc. Do you need some help with the tools? I intend to soon split schema file from evolution to check the translations, perhaps I can share some ideas then. For large po-files for which I receive updated translations from a member of a team I use gettext tools to separate the strings in three categories - those that have been translated, those that were fuzzy and those that were untranslated. I use this way of separation to get three pair of files. I can compare the translations individually which really simplifies my job. Evolution is a typical example. For a release it gets 300 new strings and 300 new fuzzies. Already translated strings are about 4500. With this kind of separation I can see where the changes have been and act accordingly. translation-toolkit contains many programs. On my Fedora 13 box I get it has 41 conversion utilities (like buga2gobo converts from buga format to gobo format) and 21 other utilites: build_tmdb, junitmsgfmt, poclean, pocommentclean, pocompendium, pocompile, poconflicts, pocount, podebug, pofilter, pogrep, pomerge, popuretext, porestructure, posegment, posplit, poswap, poterminology, pretranslate, tmserve What purposes do you use them successfully for? For example pocompendium and poterminology seem cool but I am not sure they are nice to use (from a translator's perspective). What happened to the XML format of the statistics?
Hi everyone, Damned lies used to give statistics in XML when you suffixed links with '/xml' What happened to them? Some are working, some are not. For example: http://l10n.gnome.org/releases/gnome-2-32/ -> http://l10n.gnome.org/releases/gnome-2-32/xml works. http://l10n.gnome.org/releases/ -> http://l10n.gnome.org/releases/xml works. However: http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/bg -> http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/bg/xml does NOT work. http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/bg/gnome-2-32/ui/ -> http://l10n.gnome.org/languages/bg/gnome-2-32/ui/xml does NOT work either. Can we have similar addresses up? I planned to make a customized HTML for our team that we could have used to pinpoint attention to largest modules. What is the difference between appointment and meeting in Evolution
Hi guys, There are two terms used in Evolution that I am not confident I know the difference between. These are "appointment" and "meeting". Is appointment meeting with another person (one) and meeting - appointment with people (more than one) or is there another difference? No difference at all? This is a program based on group-work - the terms could have special hue in their meaning. @Leonardo I will definitely contact the person. Help is needed as always. Some duplication of effort has occurred. I take some of the blame for missing these changes in damned lies. Is there a notification mail going to coordinators of teams when someone joins their team? The Bulgarian team has employed a svn +trac combo since June 2005 and thus the functionality in DL may lead to more work for me. Can mail messages be sent on changing, commenting, attaching translations via DL? I just checked - there are three members of our team listed in DL which I have never heard about. Several releases ago I decided that the deadline for my translation work would be the .1 releases. I naturally want to get things done for the .0 releases but distributions are either using .1 or quick to upgrade to it and it is pointless to be overwhelmed with work despite all the joy and pride you get from the translations. (After weeks getting up in 5 o'clock in order to find the time to do the translations, things do start to look unreal in a Durdanesque way). It is also easier to test the translations, after .0 I am quite more successful with compiling releases either with jhbuild/garnome or directly on a testing distribution. roster vs. address book (or book) in Ekiga
Hi everyone, The interface of Ekiga uses two expressions for things that are very similar (at least to me) - lists of contact addresses: One is "roster", the other one is "address book" (or simply "book"). Are these fundamentally the same from end user's perspective and the developers use the terms as synonyms or is there an important difference that I am overlooking. Thus I wonder whether I should a single term for translating these two or I should use two different ones (and I can). My opinion that it is an overkill to file a bug report for this. I would prefer the first translator that finds out the meaning of the word to add a comment to the source. The developer would notice immediately and either leave the comment intact or fix it. Quite a lot of bugs in Bugzilla rot and these trifle issues can be handled quite effectively with the workflow I suggest. Every time I go through Bugzilla I have to decide whether it is worth the time and effort or should I just keep on translating and produce a "good and correct localization of GNOME in my language". At least for the Bulgarian team - we have an internal bug track - http://fsa-bg.org/project/gtp where we handle these issues faster and better than in GNOME Bugzilla. Every messages with translator-credits has a point to the bug tracking system. Andre, I do not think that filing individual bug reports is the best solution for now. Initially we would need to point the most common cases of mistakes (such as the verb/noun thingie you point out). Lets get these fixed first and then treat the rest in Bugzilla. I did complain loudly last time this geographical nightmare was put on translators: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2005-August/msg00358.html Mostly the same words, sans the linuxhaters. What did that get me? The interfaces of official modules in Gnome 2.24 currently comprise 41870 strings. libgweather po-locations: 5115 strings which is more than 12% of it. (Technically there is the main libgweather po-file with another 179 strings but this is trifle, I will not add this to the 5115 geographical strings). This makes it the biggest module in official Gnome: Evolution takes the second place with 5017 strings. Let us compare this with some other modules. The single module represented in http://progress.gnome.org that is larger than libgweather is Gimp, *provided* we lump together all its modules: gimp-tips, gimp-script-fu, gimp-libgimp, gimp-python, gimp-plug-ins, UI - 6725 strings, which is 31% larger. If we take just the largest module in gimp (gimp-plug-ins) - it is just 55% of libgweather po-locations. Is the functionality of Gimp and Evolution even comparable with libgweather po-locations in terms of strings? This is bigger that any module in the translation project (http://translationproject.org/team/bg.html barring the unicode-han-translation and unicode-translation, but they are more like whole dictionaries). The module is about 8% of current KDE 4.1 and even more for OpenOffice (sadly I cannot find their statics, I am just quoting from memory - I have talked about l18n with Bulgarian OO.o guys). We only managed to translate the libgweather module last time because we happened to have on our team a very meticulous person - Yavor Doganov, who also happened to work in a ship transportation business and patiently for several months produced the translation because he knew how most of these terms are pronounced and found about the others. And in Bulgarian when we translate geographical terms we do so on the basis of local pronunciation - we do not transliterate, we transcribe. How far are you willing to push the translators in finding such information? Do all teams have ship transportation meticulous people? Lucky them. Yavor is currently very busy with many other tasks. So what can I do? As a coordinator I can just simply somewhat relocate resources - I cannot make people translate, they are volunteers. And relocating now really means forgetting about libgweather po-locations for it is not a fun module to translate and there are many external dependencies for Gnome today (for example conduit). Our team does not have the resources to translate libgweather po-locations. And it is not necessary for a nice experience with Gnome but it is way overrepresented in statistics. This module most probably should have been coordinated with KDE (http://kgeography.berlios.de/). And preferably the module would either go to freedesktop.org or preferably the translation project since cataloging places and translating them in many languages is besides the main purpose of a graphical environment. Many means could have been used to prevent the extensive growth - for example making the developers find out the IPA pronunciation in the native tongue of the majority of people living in the place. In fact - any manual thing that would have prevented automatic scraping of geographic places. If developers of libgweather really know these places - I really, really envy them their knowledge. And as far as I know my country people - if a Bulgarian is in a different place, they are far more likely to seek the local name of the place in libgweather po-locations, rather than the transcription that our team would present. So what other options do I really have besides complaining loudly and stepping on egos? Maybe kind advice, rational talk, some bugzilla magic? Writing poetry or walking the walk instead of talking the talk? Interesting, where should I walk to? Maybe run away from? I hope you realize that this message is far worse than my previous one, for it is insane that I should have to explain this. ... sanity, shmanity ... ... language not appreciated ... Bleah. Being reprimanded like a 4 grader was wonderful. I have not felt so young in ages. This immense change is something that I personally do not approve of. Translating cities, huts, hamlets and jerk water somewhere is no particular fun. And there is no particular use of this. I as a coordinator of the Bulgarian Gnome project am putting translation of the places in gweather in the trash. The developers of gweather can scrape atlases and maps for whatever damn, uninhabited place on Earth (or Moon actually, why the smeg is Mare Tranquillitatis missing from gweather?) or stranded military base. Life is way too short for this shit. The least they could have done is to have provided us with IPA transcriptions. I cannot think of any motif for their deed but the direst passion to be blogged about in linuxhaters. Come on guys, you could have contacted the team there directly, no need for such convoluted ways.
