PoEdit usually breaks PO files headers... I'd recommend you to use
  another
  translation tool instead of PoEdit.

By break you mean it breaks lines (in two, 80 char per line), and
not that it breaks (i.e. corrupts) PO files, right? I never had such
problem in POedit and I always used it without such problem.

No, I meant PoEdit sometimes corrupts files, specially with plural forms.
Maybe it happened with earlier versions and it has already been fixed, but I
started using Gtranslator and I've never used PoEdit again.

thanks

I set plural forms as

the I checked it with msgfmt

nplurals = 1...
Documents/gnome312-translating/gnome-control-center.master.ms.po:4106:
...but some messages have 2 plural forms

I rectfied this by

Having a web interface for translate GNOME could simplify our current
workflow for people that are not tech savvy.

In small teams as our Galician team, we have a lot of problems to maintain
translators just because people that could help us with translations doesn't
have a lot of technical background. Even if our workflow is as simple as
download a file, edit it and upload it.

A lot of people have given up translating just because is a tedious task
(maybe not for me, and for people that got used to it).

 An ideal workflow could be:
  - Sing up in this (xxx) service.
  - Enroll our team
  - Translate what ever you want online
  - And our reviewers will do they work after yours.

Obviously this online tool have to enable us to download those translations
to review them manually or with some custom tools (pology, language-tools,
 custom scripts, etc).

Just my honest opinion. I don't know what other language groups members
think, but definitely could be a major improvement in our ~daily work
 translating GNOME.

If I'm not mistaken, LXDE translators are using pootle and I also
heard there's a GNOME translation team also being using it. I also
have asked somewhat similar question a few years ago here and was too
lazy to configure it. By it I meant pootle server.

Re: translation project for local university

2011-12-07 Thread Umarzuki Mochlis
2011/12/7 Simos Xenitellis simos.li...@googlemail.com

Attribution for each person's work is a good thing and the current way to
do it is when making commits,
to add the Author field for each work a person has done. Then, it is
 technically possible to extract
statistics for the quantity of the work of each person.
For example, see the commit at

 http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/commit/?id=e2bbf8398b564805bb1a93cf7ec853b90a440dec
where the Author gets credited for their work.

My suggestion is to try to get the lecturer/students to work on GNOME
because they want to create a quality Malay translation and make better the
 stats that appear at http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/ms/
If you put too much emphasis for recognition from an outside source, the
initiative will be weaker in the long run.

 Thus, my recommendation would be
 1. try to make better the page at http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/ms/
It helps to put a photo, you can add a website and then a mailing list for
 the team communication.

 2. Sort out the committer situation for Malay. Once you get your
committer, add them in the Committer section at
http://l10n.gnome.org/teams/ms/ (if *you* are the single committer, you
do not appear in the Committer list, since you are also the Team
 coordinator).
Make sure your committer attributes correctly each translation using the
Author field in the commits. If there are more people contributing in a
translation, you can add them all in the Git commit message.
For each translation that a person does, you can show them a link like

 http://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/commit/?id=e2bbf8398b564805bb1a93cf7ec853b90a440dec
 which has the Author name.

 3. When you demonstrate the live GNOME desktop in the (partial) Malay
localisation, you can show the Translation credits (in the Help button)
which shows the list of the translators. The original translation of GNOME
was done by Hasbullah Bin Pit. I had a look at 'eog' and I noticed that
 Hasbullah added the text

 msgid translator-credits
 msgstr
Hasbullah Bin Pit sebol at my-penguin dοt org\n
I Love my wife my son (Umar)

which is cool as it is, and for your future presentations.
Thus, translators will be able to have their name in each of the newer
GNOME installation in the Malay language.

 4. It is technically possible to obtain stats for the work of each person
 by reading the Git repositories.
Some work that is forever in development can be found at
 https://github.com/simos/gnome-l10n-translator-stats

 5. You can explain to your team that the achievement they can receive for
their translation work is to become GNOME Foundation members. This is a big
 recognition.

 Simos

many thanks for the suggestions.

i was told that the dean asked that what sort of recognition the university
would get. To me it is as simple as putting an article on gnome's news or
something along that line.

Hi everyone,

I was contacted by a lecturer in a local university that he had approached
the dean at his university to have a project where students will volunteer
to the gnome translation in Malay and the university will get some sort of
a recognition for this effort.

How this could be done. Any legalities involved?

This could be a good start for a Gnome community in Malaysia.

 In addition, according to
 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/describecomponents.cgi?product=l10n
for the Malay language the contact address is Hasbullah Bin Pit.
When a bug report is filed for Malay, the contact address receives a

 Hi Umarzuki

_ is shortcuts, they do not need to be the same in your language. (but the
hard part is to make sure, you do not use the save letter twice in your
 translation.

If you still want it to be v, i do not know the answer, as i change the _
 to fit my language.

 Hi!

 See http://live.gnome.org/TranslationProject/StartingATeam for details:

 * Contact the former coordinator. If he agrees that you could become the
new coordinator, send a mail to the list with his response.

It seems the coordinator's e-mail (on the malay team page) is unavailable
anymore and I'm still waiting his reply (facebook) for any e-mail address
that can be used to forward to this list.

In the meantime you can still start translating and attach the
translation to bugzilla.gnome.org and ping the list so that someone
 commits them.

Was there any documentation explains in detail this method (through gnome
bugzilla) because i need to document it in malay language somewhere so it
will be easier if anyone suddenly have the interest to help translating and
not be discouraged.

Do i just make a bug report on related Gnome component and attach its .po
file?
How do i ping the list?

leave comment (choosing Action: Write a comment) or can somebody guide me
the proper way of submitting .po file for Gnome?
