xkeyboard-config: GNOME help for non-GNOME project needed, for GNOME3 release
Hi folks G-c-c and gnome-shell are using xkeyboard-config for displaying the variants and layouts. Formally, this is NOTGNOME - but that project defines some strings visible in GNOME GUI. There is agreement to make special xk-c release for GNOME3 around next Monday. There is massive work to be done by translators. Edit the document and fill it in with all the details. Then, print it, sign it and scan it so that you have a digital image of the completed form. b. Use one of those Free FAX to the USA to send the completed disclaimer to the FSF. (the FAX number is in the disclaimer document). c. It takes several days for processing, so do this now in order to get accepted before the end of the week. So, make the appropriate arrangements now so that your translation gets accepted to the Translation Project on time. Sergey, The update is really massive. I do not mean to be disrespectful, but why did this happen? Since I am also the coordinator of Bulgarian at the Translation project, I have kept a close eye on your module. As you can see from: http://translationproject.org/domain/xkeyboard-config.html I have translated 100% of 2.1-pre1's 769 strings. When I updated to 2.1.99, the stats are: 362 translated (47%) 426 fuzzy (55%) 145 untanslated (19%) 141 obsolete (18%) Percents are relative to 2.1-pre1's strings This is really a *huge* change for a in-version transition and you give out quite a short notice. I thought that I had made proper planning for your module because it is visible and important part of the configuration of the graphical interface. GNOME 3.0 is a hard target for us, I do not know if my team will make it to 100%. Still we do have a second chance as there will be a subsequent release of 3.0.1 about a month later, distros will actually ship it or extremely quickly migrate to it. xkeyboard-config has 3 releases a year as this page states: http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/XKeyboardConfig/ReleaseSchedule If we miss 4 April (and this is likely), will you do an interim point release? Furthermore, the same page promises a two week string freeze period. The TP robot mailed me today, this corresponds to 9 of April, not 4. And lastly - your project is definitely not new. On the contrary, it is well established, with FD.O history going back to 2007, and GNOME history before that (and I know because I have been translating this project for almost a decade as seen from the bg.po headers). Please think of some kind of message string stability - you *do* have the experience for that. Again - no disrespect for your project which I use every day, but please consider translators' tribulations as well. The update is really massive. I do not mean to be disrespectful, but why did this happen? There is no disrespect (well, not more than I deserved), you have all right to question that. This is really a *huge* change for a in-version transition and you give out quite a short notice. First, there was a plan to polish the keyboard layout descriptions. The existing schema implicitly used simple convention Country - variant description that did not adhere to the ideas of GUI gurus overlooking GNOME 3. That had to be changed. While gnome code for that change was around for a while, there was no action to change the actual descriptions. Perhaps, it is mostly my personal mismanagement fault. William McCann made really heroic standup a couple of nights ago - he HIGified (as I call it) all description in base.xml.in. There was preliminary agreement to make out-of-schedule release of xk-c for GNOME3 (while the scheduled release in May will happen as usual). That's how we ended with the current situation. So, in short: 1. There will be release 2.2 of xk-c with improved descriptions, next Monday (9 days from now). That will allow people to create live cds with gnome 3. It would be great to have as many translations as possible - while I realize that short notice will inevitably affect the statistics. 2. There will be another release 2.3 of xk-c in May. That would give translators more time to improve translations. Since the change in descriptions is really huge, I could consider string freeze longer than usual 2 weeks. I think for distributions it would be better to use that release rather than 2.2. I appreciate the hard work of translators and I understand you guys always do your best - so please accept my apologies for such a short notice.
