You make a good point Fred, and I have seen people on this list who keep
their GnuCash data in the cloud too.

Although this changes the risk profile, it does not eliminate the need

Hello,
I use GnuCash for a small school. One of our parents paid their entire tuition
amount at the beginning of the year. I have been fiddling with how to record
this.

We bill monthly; therefore, for the payment that doesn't have a receivable yet,
shouldn't it go into a liability account? Using the "Process Payment" dialog
results in an accounts receivable with a negative balance. This seems odd to
me, but it has been some time since I took accounting. In GnuCash's system, is
an accounts receivable with a negative balance akin to a liability?

Thanks,

Hi, Vance!

A useful way to answer questions like this is to ask yourself, "What
would I do if I were doing all my bookkeeping with pen and ink in one of
those huge ledger books?" Once you've answered that question, you can
then take up the question of "How would I accomplish that in Gnucash?"
but usually once you answer the first question then the second one is
obvious.

Have you ever overpaid a bill? The next month they send you a statement
showing a negative balance, right? I see no reason why you couldn't have
a negative balance in an account receivable. (Your bill is a liability
to you, but it's a receivable to your supplier, and they don't have a
problem with a negative receivable.) And one benefit of Keeping
everything in a normal receivable account is that when you accrue the
tuition for all the students, you don't have to do anything different
for _this_ student: the tuition will simply reduce the negative amount.

On the other hand, I would not create a liability account because (1)
you are then treating this student's accounting differently from every
other student's, both when recording this prepayment _and_ when
recording tuition accrued; and (2) liability accounts are almost always
for things you expect to have to pay off eventually.

That's how I would treat this transaction. I'm not an accountant. But I
suspect pretty strongly that nobody will give you any grief about which
way you handle it, as long as any reports or statements of parent
account that you generate make sense.

Thank you!

As I mentioned GnuCash 4.9, Windows 11 (64 bit). Have tried opening from
apps, from shortcut, directly from the GnuCash.exe in bin. I cannot open
GnuCash from any version higher than 4.9. I see a circle for a few seconds
while windows is try to open GnuCash and then nothing. I've tried opening
from PowerShell too.

Is there any way of seeing where the exe is getting stuck or if something is
missing or if I need to update anything?

I'm either go to have to stay on 4.9 or change to another program.

Thanks you for your help.

I'm sorry about that. I could have asked to filter more aggressively (but it
was very late here
when I wrote my last mail). This is the info I was looking for:

These lines show that the config-user.scm file is found. No idea why this
wouldn't print the
value of XDG_DATA_DIRS to your gnucash trace file. But if needed we can debug
that later.
Let's first follow the other possible clue below.

Re: [GNC] Color of register placeholder text and hiding register header

I found this will change the input text color:

gnc-id-cursor entry {

*.gnc-class-register-cursor color but not sure why.

As for the header I'm not sure how you would completely remove that. I'm
assuming that would be in the code and not just CSS.

[GNC] gnucash 4.11 truncates trailing zeroes in Price Database

2022-09-11 Thread rsbrux via gnucash-user
Meanwhile I have upgraded to GC 4.11 running as a Flatpak under Ubuntu
Studio 22.04.1. The reported problem with truncation of trailing zeroes
after the decimal point in the Reconcile dialog appears to be fixed in
this version. However, I now have a similar problem with the Price
Database dialog, as reported by David below. I liked it better when all
price entries displayed with the same number of places after the decimal
point. Is there a way to get this behaviour back?

3.11 or 4.11? 4.11 is the current version.
<<
3.11. I realize that 4.11 is the current version, but I have just
migrated from 2.6.19 and want to make sure everything is working
correctly before taking the next step.
The GC wiki gave me the impression that 3.11 is still supported, but I
can live with this until I upgrade to 4.11.

Do you happen to have Preferences > Numbers, Date, Time > Numbers >
'Automatic Decimal Point' checked by any chance? If so, it might be
dropping '.00'

<<
I have tried both settings; it doesn't make a difference.

@David

This seems to be similar to the behaviour of displayed prices in the
Price Database - dp doesn't line up as it always truncates prices on the
right of the decimal point to the last non zero digit regardless of the
? Currently running 4.11 but it's been like this for as long as I can
remember.

<<
Odd: my price database always shows 6 figures after the decimal point in
3.11, even if the last 4 are zeroes. IIRC, this was also the case in 2.6.19.

@Geoff

That is not my experience with version 4.8 on Windows 10 - see attached
screenshot.

Your screenshot looks like what I used to get in 2.6.19. I guess the
next step is to upgrade to 4.x

You could make the text and background in the header the same color to hide

[GNC] Color of register placeholder text and hiding register header

2022-09-11 Thread chandler via gnucash-user

Hey all, I'm using Gnucash 4.11 on Linux and trying to get the coloring of the
register to my liking. I'm using ~/.config/gnucash/gtk-3.0.css for the
settings.

I haven't yet figured out how to change the color of the placeholder text that shows up when the cursor is
not in that textbox. That is the gray-colored italic "Num" "Description"
"Notes" indicated by the red arrow in the attached Screenshot.

I tried using the GTK+ Inspector to try and find this value, but I can't seem
to find any of the entries in gtk-3.0.css in the GTK Inspector, any idea how to
properly use it?

Also I would like to disable/hide the top header in the register (outlined by
the blue border in the Screenshot), is there anyway to do that?
