Re: [GNC] gnucash Crashes

2023-03-30 Thread R Losey
I believe I had the same issue on a similar platform -- mine is an M1 iMac
instead of an M1 MacBook Pro, but I was playing around right after I
installed it. I ran a report that showed nothing (apparently needed some
options set). I selected Options, and GnuCash crashed.

I've avoided doing that since.

Re: [GNC] easy way to total number of transactions and USD ammounts

2023-03-30 Thread Adrien Monteleone
And if you just need the number without it being in a cell, you can
select a cell from any column in the first non-header row, then CTRL-D
to select everything down the column to the end of the data, and your
status bar should show you the result of COUNT(). If not, you can most
likely add it to the status bar.

I'm getting a similar crash with 5.0 on Ventura.

Open and run a saved report, then open saved reports again and crash.

Re: [GNC] 5.0-1 (Flathub) issue

2023-03-30 Thread Dale Alspach
While that is a short term solution, it may have negative consequences. It
eliminates the correct match from the list of matches. Further your
solution will likely add the matching string ONG for future
entries and the entry may cause formatting (alignment on initial visible
character) annoyances in reports.
If instead I wanted to enter Long, spaces before and after will not
eliminate John Hancock Long Term Care or any other phrase with the internal
word long.

Well, only sites that want to be found by Google!

I have a couple of web sites (some wikis in particular) which are only
for my personal and family use. I don't care in the slightest if they
don't get good Google ratings, in fact it's almost an advantage as it
will probably reduce any 'unfriendly' access attempts! :-)

That hardly says that I do not "see the advantages"! :-)

I was just saying that I think the concept that a non-encrypted HTTP:
site is 'dangerous' is misleading. If all you are doing is looking at
the site and reading information then it doesn't matter in the
slightest.

> I would argue it is *not **wholly irrelevant* when the largest search

Quite true, if the site in question want's to be found easily. Though
in the case of someone searching for 'gnucash' I can't see how it
makes much differenc, you can only really find gnucash if you search
for 'gnucash'. The one case where better/higher Google ranking might
be if someone searches for 'accounting software'.

So, somewhat sadly, I agree that gnucash.org being an HTTPS: site is
probably a good idea. It's just for not very good reasons IMHO.

Dale,

Typing 2 spaces to cater for the matches to "ong " with a trailing space
works for me in that specific case, of course if you have no matches that
end with ong and a trailing space only one space is required.

What if there is no more to type?
Example: I enter ONG
That is exactly what I want. The list includes Amanda Szongo, all
possibities including words such as long, e.g., long term care. The
highlighted entry is Amand Szongo so I cannot just hit tab. How do I move
the cursor off the description ? I don't want to scroll through a list for
something that is already in the field.
I have not played with this or searched the documentation, so there may be
something simple.
For me it would help if the matching assumed that I was typing the first
few characters.

Re: [GNC] easy way to total number of transactions and USD ammounts

2023-03-30 Thread Murugan Muruganandam
hi Jeff

I would suggest the best will be to generate the transaction report
in options

Account:select all account
Display: select account name , unselect full name
Display: Amount as single column
General: date range and check table for export

export the report to .xls format and open it in the excel
from the data make a pivot table at account level as row label and the amount
as value field (you can make it two times, one for sum and one for count)

after the same you can pick the details for reporting what you need

The IRS threw me a curve ball this year (imagine that). One of their
tax forms went from $600 minimum to you, to $20,000 "AND" more than 200
transactions in 2022. Is there someone out there that can hold my hand
and show me how to export those transactions to a spreadsheet to see if
we fall into that level at the federal level, since there are no
reporting features in GNC that total $ and number of transactions, at
least that I am aware of? I have not used spreadsheets for much of
anything since my college days, shall we say decades ago, so rusty is an
understatement.

The real kicker is my state sets the minimum at $1,200, period.

The company involved, has so far refused to provide me with a copy of
the 1099 involved. It may or may not meet the federal level but I know
for a fact that it passes my states $ level of $1,200.

Don't you just love our tax system in the U.S.A.? NOT!

In fact, Google has been on a broad push to get rid of http since early

I noticed from the Google website - actually Google, not what someone says
they think about Google.

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/10218333?hl=en-GB#not_enough_da
ta

"The Page Experience report provides a summary of the user experience of
visitors to your site. Google evaluates page experience metrics for
individual URLs on your site and will use them as a ranking signal for a URL
in Google Search results" Then under

"Here are the criteria for a URL to rate as good in page experience status
in Google Search::

- *Failed:* The URL is served using HTTP, not HTTPS.

So it seems to me that the argument that a website does not collect personal
information, so does not need HTTPS, is flawed. You can argue the technical
merits of Google's approach, but it does seem to be the case that the use of
HTTPS is a good thing if you want the website to do well in Google.

Re: [GNC] 5.0-1 (Flathub) issue

2023-03-30 Thread David H
I also like this feature, a nice surprise when I started entering a new txn
and it popped up - shows me where I've rearranged payee details
inadvertently. Being as pedantic as I am, it's now given me extra work
because I now feel obliged to go back and sort out the differences :-)

Thanks to John and all the other developers / translators / etc for the
continuing efforts bringing new features to Gnucash which continues to
improve, albeit with the odd minor hiccup here and there. Thanks also to
those that are quick to jump in and help with any issues that do crop up,
we have a great user support list here also.

One complaint - Get Quotes on version 5 (Windows / macOS / linux) no longer
allows me sufficient time to make the necessary instant coffee first thing
in the morning, I barely get coffee and sugar into the mug and
it's finished already. Seriously though, I love the speed of it now - good
work on the rewrite in c++.

Thanks again David H.

There are people here that do not see the advantages of it. To quote Chris
Green above.

"How does that make the site 'dangerous'? All it means is that
communication between you (i.e. the user) and the site isn't
encrypted. As you don't need to send or receive any confidential
information the lack of encryption is wholly irrelevant!

I would argue it is *not **wholly irrelevant* when the largest search
engine uses it as a ranking factor.

About two months ago, there was a major ice storm in Austin, and the area was
completely unprepared for such a storm. A friend of mine was without power for
about 12 days. He has two small children, and he has good local resources,
which were also impacted by the ice storm, and it was not easy on him.

From the other messages here, the web server is in Austin, and was impacted by
the storm. The basic claim extends to the ISP in terms of recovery from the ice
storm, which propagated to the GnuCash server.

No one here seems to have a philosophical problem with https, but when an ice
storm bring the system down, well, that's a problem.

But that still means if you want to do well in Google, you maximise your
chances if you use HTTPS. Even if you have a completely static website,
with no possibility of a user entering even an email address or name.

Re: [GNC] Site certificate expiry warning

2023-03-30 Thread Michael or Penny Novack

"Here are the criteria for a URL to rate as good in page experience status
in Google Search::

- *Failed:* The URL is served using HTTP, not HTTPS.

So it seems to me that the argument that a website does not collect
personal information, so does not need HTTPS, is flawed. You can argue the
technical merits of Google's approach, but it does seem to be the case that
the use of HTTPS is a good thing if you want the website to do well in
Google.

Except you seriously misunderstand the difference between HTTP and HTTPS.

This has nothing to do with the capability of collecting personal
information. It has to do with the SECURITY of what is transmitted. In
other words, IF personal data were collected by a site using HTTP it
would be insecure during transmission. Therefore a site should not be
collecting personal data without being HTTPS.

Google is down rating sites using HTTP because it doesn't know what the
site is doing (collecting personal data or not). It is telling users
"this site less safe" because IF the site is collecting personal
information would be less secure.

Re: [GNC] Site certificate expiry warning

2023-03-30 Thread Dr. David Kirkby
I noticed from the Google website - actually Google, not what someone says
they think about Google.

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/10218333?hl=en-GB#not_enough_data

"The Page Experience report provides a summary of the user experience of
visitors to your site. Google evaluates page experience metrics for
individual URLs on your site and will use them as a ranking signal for
a URL in Google Search results" Then under

"Here are the criteria for a URL to rate as good in page experience status
in Google Search::

- *Failed:* The URL is served using HTTP, not HTTPS.

So it seems to me that the argument that a website does not collect
personal information, so does not need HTTPS, is flawed. You can argue the
technical merits of Google's approach, but it does seem to be the case that
the use of HTTPS is a good thing if you want the website to do well in
Google.

I also disagree; I have only used 5.0 for a few entries; it will get a good
workout tomorrow, but I can see it saving typing. Currently, it's a bit of
a surprise to see the list pop up, but I imagine I'll get used to it. I
don't know what happens if there are, say, 20 different older entries; it
would be nice if it only showed a limited number of recent matches for when
there are a lot of possibilities -- even nicer if this were
user-customizable.

I found the old way of matching the last entry a bit annoying at times.

According to

As others have said, changing the extension doesn't change the data.

Instead of clicking on the file, start LibreOffice Calc, and open the data

[GNC] No 5.0 Quotes fix, went back to 4.8

As the month end approaches, and 5.0 cannot see my Quotes setup, I did a

my Quotes work again.

Let me know if you ever release a 5.? that can pick up a good Quotes install
from 4.?, so I can return to what seems like the bleeding edge, not the stable

Re: [GNC] Exporting from QuickBooks / Importing to GnuCash

2023-03-30 Thread Chris Skudder

From Intuit:
"Intuit Interchange Format (.IIF) files are ASCII text, TSV
(Tab-Separated Value) files that QuickBooks Desktop uses to import or
export lists or transactions"

source:
https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/manage-lists/iif-overview-import-kit-sample-files-and-headers/00/201577

So this could very well work, but I can't test it:
Export from QB as IIF.
Open IIF in a spreadsheet
Save as a COMMA separated value file- that is, CSV ...
... instead of Intuit's TAB separated IIF file
Then in GnuCash: File> Import> Import Txn's from CSV

Hope it helps.

Chris

FWIW ... IMHO ... Intuit seems to have a track record of aggressively,
even unethically, hiding technical pathways, or anything, which might
help people do something which costs Intuit revenue. As contrasted with
building a product which offers real value for money. IMHO.

It looks like your best bet is a Transaction Report that you then export

An enhancement to show the count of results on a Find operation might be

The real kicker is my state sets the minimum at $1,200, period.

Re: [GNC] v5.0: Not finding Import OFX/QFX File choice

2023-03-30 Thread Joseph St. Denis via gnucash-user
I have seen the same problem with the QFX file missing. Luckily my bank still
supports the QIF downloads.

I how ever have a problem with CSV files I get up to point of selecting the
suggested amount but I get no results no matter what I select.

Subject: [GNC] v5.0: Not finding Import OFX/QFX File choice

Running Windows 11. Just updated from v4.16 to v5.0. When I look for "File >
Import > Import OFX/QFX file", it's not there.

Section 6.16.1 of the updated documentation still lists OFX/QFX as a valid
import file. Is this a bug?

Re: [GNC] easy way to total number of transactions and USD ammounts

2023-03-30 Thread Brad Morrison

Hi Jeff/all,

I encountered this issue a few weeks ago for a tax client with a short
term rental property. Apparently, 2022 is a "transition" year for the
new requirements for producing a form 1099K -
https://www.irs.gov/businesses/understanding-your-form-1099-k

This VRBO page might be easier to read for some -
https://help.vrbo.com/articles/About-1099-K-tax-form-reports

I do not know what your state requirements are (I don't even know what
state you are in), but the form 1099K is a federal form, and the company
that you are dealing with may be right that they are not required to
produce a form 1099K for you for 2022, just FYI. It reminds me of that
old Greg Palast (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Palast) phrase, "The
best democracy money can buy."

In other IRS/US tax news -

Re: [GNC] Problems with Finance::Quote and GnuCash Version: 5.0 Build ID: 5.0+(2023-03-25)

2023-03-30 Thread Outlook
I have the same problem with quote update on version 5.0, and now I have to
return back to version 4.13 and it works fine.

Some quotes from Taiwan stock, for example 0050.TW updated from Yahoo as JSON
on macOS 13.3/

Thanks!

[GNC] version 5.0 stable, is there a flathub update?

2023-03-30 Thread Jeff
I see that the much awaited version 5.0 stable has been released.  Is
there a way to do it under Flathub, on Ubuntu 22.04.1 lts?  Or do I need
to figure out how to convert my updates to flatpak?

I would build it on my own server but it fails to create an executable
version every-time.  One of those gremlins my Physics professors kept
warning me about.  I think Schrodinger's cat must be lurking in my
system some where.
